URGENT - NEED help with Nexus 6 - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi guys
I am going to get a second hand Nexus 6 in good condition. However, the device is Verizon and I am in the UAE. Mostly it is a second - third hand device. I need to know what are the measures I can take to not get scammed.
What all do I check before purchasing?
Mostly, just wanted to know if this isn't a stolen device. That's all.
Anyone?
Thanks!

I'd suggest you get the IMEI and check it here....http://www.imeipro.info/ Also wouldn't hurt to check with your carrier to make sure they don't have anything blacklisted. Most carriers have a webpage you can just paste the IMEI into.

I would check to see what LTE bands you need to use in the UAB. The Verizon model is a xt1103 and the international version is xt1100.

Thanks guys ..thanks for the imei pro ...worked like a charm.. It says it's clean ..thanks again

[Q] US Celluar Nexus 6 locked?

noticed US Celluar finally started selling all versions of Nexus 6 in both colors, anyone know if these are locked to US Celluar or can we work around this, especially since they offer prepaid where you can just buy phone outright(for a little bit more $ though)
I am thinking of giving it a try...
Don't know when I may get my 64gb from T-mobile... already have a 32gb.... I guess if it doesn't I can just return within 15-days... thinking of doing it....:good:

Don't know how to confirm...
in the comments of the article below.... this is the only shred of evidence that it may not be... however they checked with a US Cellular CSR... so no telling if they were just reading a stock answer or what... someone physically doing the SIM swap would have to confirm as I am not confident... The other factor to is that it may work going to say t-mobile or att and not sprint or verizon or even vice versa... really need one in hand to test...

So just to re-clarify the Nexus 6 purchased outright from US Cellular is unlocked, free of any carrier branding (on the actual phone and in regards to software)? It is the same as a Google Play ordered phone, correct?

Yes this is the second source that has confirmed this... (found confirmation on Nexus 6 reddit sight as well by a user) however there are things to consider:
1. You have to live in a US Cellular area to buy over the phone or online outright. Billing address & shipping address must be in US Cellular Coverage Area
2. If you address is not in a coverage area, then you must go to the closest US Cellular Store to buy if they are carrying it in that store... for me its 2 hours away so I doubt I will do it at this point... still considering it over the weekend. This also means that they must let you buy it outright as I heard you can hit a roadblock if they just don't want to sell it to you.
Good Luck Anyone Trying... I am going to try to confirm the stock at the nearest store to me... Doubt they have the magic white elephant (64GB in White):silly:
Called my Closest Us Cellular Store.... Tell me you haven't heard this before... None in-store, insufficient quantities at launch, stores won't have them for awhile.....:crying:
I've got mine and I'm on US Cellular. Got it on the 10th. I was the first person to ask because they didn't even know if yet had it yet. Just be persistent about asking if they have it. They had to go look in the back to see if they had it. I'm not sure about it being carrier locked because I don't have a reason for switching...
Nexus 6
Can anyone with a US Cellular Nexus 6 confirm that the phone is SIM unlocked? If so, is this true even if the phone was purchased with a 2 yr contract subsidy? Thanks for your help!

Buying Nexus 6 from Craigslist

I found a fair deal from Craigslist for a Nexus 6. Can anyone tell me what to look for so that I dont get scammed? It was purchased from Motorola so I can activate on any carrier correct? (im verizon user). Is there a way to check if cell is blocked? (i.e. bad IMEI or stolen)
I have him holding on to it till tomorrow morning so if anyone can reply with some insight.
Thx

Best way to do it is to have them meet you at your carrier store (Verizon in your case) and make sure it fully activates on your account, then and only them do you pay, that's what I do for any and all phone purchases. And yes, if it was purchase from Motorola or Google it's good for any carrier worldwide. But always just double check as to why they're selling because think about it, unlocked these phones are 6-700 bucks, and if someone is selling for a fraction of that I'd raise some eyebrows, but that's just me
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
Verizon may not activate it. Most people with play store or Motorola nexus 6's need to use an already activated Verizon nanosim. Not sure if this has changed since they started selling it, buy my phone from Motorola is still not recognized by Verizon.

The ONLY safe way to purchase a phone from a 3rd party, is to obtain the ORIGINAL PURCHASE RECEIPT, or documentation from the original vendor for it.
Basically, the problem is that a stolen device can work fine initially, but then *become reported stolen* and stop working later on. Like for a car, you need evidence of ownership so that you can hold someone accountable for it if it does become blacklisted.
Frankly, the effort is more than its worth. Just pay the price and buy a new one from google.
Take a picture of ID and or plate #....
There is absolute no way on this planet that I would allow some random Joe take a picture of my ID.
Everyone should refuse, no questions asked.
Get an original receipt or take your chances.
Make sure it's completely wiped and that you're able to assign your google account on it.

You can check the IMEI here:
www.swappa.com/esn
You also need to find out if the phone was financed from Motorola. I would ask for a copy of the invoice - he can log on and print it out. If the seller balks at that or otherwise does not want give you his name/address, I would not purchase the phone from him. I would also ask for photo ID so that I could verify he was the buyer of the phone from Motorola and is entitled to sell it. Again, if he balks at that, he isn't legit.
There is no legitimate reason for anyone to want to be an anonymous seller when you are purchasing a phone that they could report as lost or stolen and get the IMEI blacklisted.
Also, you will need an already activated nano SIM to get the phone active on your Verizon line. There are several threads on this.

? about bringing a phone into ATT for activation, custom rom

Hello, just wanted to ask this and see what other people thought. I don't think it would be an issue, but just want to be sure.
So I am buying a Nexus 6 for my Dad for his b-day, and what I want to do is root/install the Chroma rom on it before I send it to him. Question being if I do this for him and then he brings the phone into ATT to get a nano sim for it, is ATT going to give him grief if they notice that the phone is rooted/custom rom'd?

if you/he owns the phone, it doesnt matter what anybody who works for att thinks. you have that right.
My experience is that it makes no difference as to what rom you have on the phone.

U don't need to activate the phone on Att. You can tell them that you need a nano sim at a store and they will give it you. insert it and you should be good to go. U will need to activate the sim for your line.
When I activated my N6 i just asked for a new nano sim. I even declined them adding my imei on the account.
They activated the sim. I made a call and checked data and walked out. No issues.

Yeah no problem.
I had activated some phones through a third party seller. You know, the authorized agents. While activating my new phones I did not realize that he was writing down the imei from my old phone.
I'm a phone junky and switch phones on my account all the time. Hell on my 1 line today I have used Nexus 5, iPhone 4s and Nokia 1020.
Everything was fine for a while then the new phone stopped working.
Called Cust svs and they told me that my imei was bad I switched phones and then my old one did not work. It was reported stolen too. The guy I bought the phone from reported the imei as stolen, but he reported the wrong one from his list and gave another. So he said.
Now my old phone and new phone were not working. He said it was a mistake. He did not ask for any money or ransom for the imei, but that stopped me from buying on contract i always pay full price for unlocked phones and when ATT ask for IMEI I always decline since I don't carry insurance on my phones.
I admit it was probably a freak incident but I don't give it out anymore and decline when asked.
I'm sure that ATT has a way to get the info, I just don't provide it.
Now I sound like the crazy old guy with a tin foil hat.
@qnc,
Actually you don't sound crazy at all. It's an interesting story, and I think we all could take a lesson from it. Caveat emptor.
FWIW: I don't believe a carrier can get your IMEI directly from your device.

Carrier Locked? Sim Locked? UICC Locked? What state is my phone in?

I bought an SM-N960U used off of letgo about a month ago now and I have been trying to get it to work for me but I am still having a few issues.
The guy I bought it from, who himself bought it used, was using it on T-Mobile and I am able to make and receive calls okay and get internet okay with Verizon. The phone was originally a Sprint phone. It continuously gave me "Activation was Unsuccessful" fullscreen messages repeatedly until I used adb to disable com.sec.omadmspr and com.sprint.ms.smf.services.
When swapping SIMS from different carriers the phone DOES NOT ask for an UNLOCK code.
When I first got the phone I tried to call Sprint and ask if the phone was Carrier locked thinking that if there was a small amount owed or something perhaps I could pay it and UN-Carrier Lock the phone... Well, that didn't go well. Since I wasn't on the account and couldn't provide the name or phone number of the old owner they wouldn't tell me if there was OR wasn't a carrier lock on the phone. Eventually I got them to take the IMEI but they still told me nothing.
So, I've been using the phone daily for about a month now, but because of it's problems (the app that won't run) I still have to carry my old phone as well. This phone is always on Roam. One time when trying to fix it I dialed the *228 PRL update number. That was a mistake. It broke my internet to the point where NO ONE was able to fix it. I went to a Verizon stone. No help. I called customer service. No help. They transferred me to Tech Support.... finally they had me swap in one of my older SIM cards and they programmed that one to work.
TLDR; The phone works with VZW voice and data, but is always on roaming, some apps refuse to work properly, under UICC Unlock the phone says it is locked to Sprint Sims and sometimes the data connection drops and it says it doesn't work because of "Data Roaming" being disabled.
What version of locked is my phone? Is it safe to start flashing it?

you probably has nothing to do with your problem but it may be of some help if you contact the guy mentioned in this thread for the LG V20, it's a guy that works for sprint and you can contact him on the Sprint Users forums ..
He may be able to help you with the sim unlocking of your phone, there's nothing to lose I think!
give it a shot ... look at this thread and then register for an account on the Sprint Forums and look for the guy..

You need to contact the person who sold you the device and ask them for assistance. As they may need to contact Sprint to activate the device and unlock it for you.

Thanks, but the guy I bought it from bought it used, so he wont have any Sprint account info, so then I'd have to try to track down the person he bought it from... and on and on and I dont know how long or fruitful the search would be... and again... I'm on the phone right now, on Verizon with a Verizon SIM. I dont think its carrier locked... but then I dont know what's going on.

They don't want to make it easy for people to re-purpose stolen phones. There are things a legitimate owner can do in order to make a phone ready for re-sale, and it sounds like these things didn't happen for the phone you bought. It all sounds a bit fishy, doesn't it?

Thanks, but if I thought "it sounds a bit fishy" I probably wouldn't have bought the used phone in the first place... and I certainly wouldn't have called Sprint and given them the IMEI and asked them; the people that could render my phone a useless brick, with one tiny bit of information, for help. Each smart phone I've bought in the last few years has been used because frankly to me it seems to be the best way to buy them financially. $1000 the day they come out or $200 - $300 6 - 12 months later used.

Point is, when someone is about to buy a used phone from a stranger, make sure it is factory reset and then immediately call the carrier and confirm the IMEI is clean and that it has been carrier unlocked, else, don't buy it. Obviously it's not advice for you, since you already did it the wrong way. This is a good lesson for posterity.

Question Pixel 7 Verizon Demo unit

Hello all, does anyone have experience with demo units, I want to buy one from eBay and send to my brother who is not in US it is brand new sealed but I don't know will that work with their local gsm or it is usually locked to Verizon? What else I should know about this item? Thanks
No direct experience, but every post I have seen from people that get them is that they are useless. They are locked in demo mode and nothing you do will get them out of it.

If you insist on purchasing that device, you could always try and check the IMEI at an IMEI checker to at least see if it is blacklisted from Verizon (or any other carrier); because you will not be able to do anything about it even if it would be sent to another country.
That, and sometimes there are website services for a carrier where you can enter the IMEI to see if the device is "compatible" if/when you can "bring your own device" to the carrier...
but beware there is a scam that is going on that have people getting a device on a plan, them selling the phone for a high price, the buyer checks and sees that it has a clean IMEI, but after a couple of months of non-payment to the original carrier that has leased the device, they blacklist the SIM and the device no longer will work anywhere while the seller runs away with whatever they sold it for... That's why it's good to call the major carriers, give them the IMEI and make sure it's not under any payment plan or anything...
and of course if the seller isn't willing to give an IMEI, then that is definitely suspect & shady and should not be bought from that seller...
Don't buy Verizon phones, demo unit or not. They are always locked down to their network and you can't modify them due to their locked bootloader. Also, they have garbage re-sell value because of this. Don't waste your money. If you really want a p7 and $350 is your price point, wait for a sale when the p8 gets ready to launch or keep your eye out for a good sale going on for the unlocked, non-carrier based version.

You might do better and get a better response in the appropriate device forum (Pixel 6)...
But as it seems your device is being managed by (what I assume is) an IT department for (what I assume is) your work device, I doubt they'd allow you to install a custom OS on it as well as you not getting into trouble for modifying a work device. At the very least, they'd find it an annoyance; at worst, they'll see it as some sort of security breach and would be immediately turned back and you reprimanded...
