Best place to buy - after price drop due to new Mi5S launch? - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hello all,
since the new Mi5S was launched, several places dropped the price on the Mi5.
What would be your recommendation - where is the best place to get it now? (I am in Canada, would go for the 64GB version and would need DHL shipping).
Thank you for any recommendations!

I got mine from ibuygou.com

I bought mine at Gearbest, for 260€. (3/32GB variant)
It's at a great price, and it comes to Europe via China without customs tax.

How does that work without import tax?

They have a Priority Line for certain countries. I'm from Portugal.
I think the package will come to England and then to Spain, that way enters the EU, so there's no taxes involved.

I saw someone selling it for €208, (the 64GB version) on Amazon.de, but the day after the price was €370 so it was probably an error.

Its on sale at gearbest, 64gb version for 305€, no additional taxes/customs fees. Will hopefully reach me in 5-10 days.

Bought mine on vopmart .
No problems whatsoever,no taxes for EU.

Yeah, you run the risk of getting a non-offical MIUI build. So basically, you're stuck with that ROM and you're not able to update. Check en.miui.com, there's some tutorials on there on how to get back on official builds.

It's £277 on Amazon right now.

When you have ADB and usb driver installed its not that hard using fastboot.
Like the man said there are several threads at en.miui.com how to.
If you like there are also variants that have multilanguage's at https://xiaomi.eu/community/
For that to work you need to unlock the bootloader if im right...

My phone arrived today (11 days from china to germany, not bad actually), and it really did contain a strange non-official global MIUI version.
Most tutorials suggest flashing a MIUI dev version in order to unlock the bootloader, but this did not work with this modified MIUI. That got me worried, actually.
However, after spending a few hours with it, I found that booting into EDL mode and using MiFlash with a fastboot-version of the latest official dev MIUI version did work (afaik the only variant that works with a locked bootloader). This probably won't work in the future, I heard that newer roms do not allow the EDL mode any more ... maybe in the future you need to use a special usb cable ("deep flash").
My brand new MI5 is now cleaned off that gearbest crap, and is running an official global dev rom. I am now waiting for my unlock confirmation.
More info on deep flashing and where to ge the official fastboot roms that work with EDL mode :

Nice! Glad you got it working like it should. This is why whenever I buy a Xiaomi device I make sure the place I'm getting it from sends me a sealed untouched phone. It's so much easier to unlock the bootloader and get on a global ROM when you're on an official build.

I wrote a not-so-good review on the mi5 on gearbest, stating that I didn't like the modified rom on my shiny new sealed phone.
They came back to me and offered a full refund if I wanted to send it back, or gearbest store credit. I took the credit, since my MI5 is happily running CM 13. I though about sending it back and ordering a MI5S for a moment ... instead I just flashed the new falcon kernel and OCed it to 2.5 GHz myself, the effect is pretty much the same
In general I completely agree with you, gearbest should at least give customers the choice:
Send out modified phones for the lazy western customer with a play store ready to go and clearly state this on the webpage, or keep them untouched as one would expect it to be (what xiaomi is actually going for by locking the bootloader in the first place).

I'm surprised they offered you something. I was looking at other places to buy Xiaomi devices when I was looking to buy my Redmi Note 3. Vickmall.com seems pretty decent. They actually have an option to select what ROM you want, which looks pretty cool.
I would have kept the Mi5 too. You do have more options for ROMs and will get better support.

this phone looks awesome BUT BIG FAIL

I see this phone last week, and was impressed by this MONSTER
first thing I do is taking my credit card and search on net for a good seller, i know this phone is on sale only at 12may
but my biggest surprise was his LTE capabilities.... really ?? a monster spec flagship phone... with only FDD LTE: 1800/2100/2600MHz ???
only 3 categories ?... i want this phone .... but without 800mhz (cat20) it will be a fail in many europe countries ...
and one strange thing too: this phone is announced nothere on the official website... why ?
Most xaomi phones are only meant for China, from what I've heard, and so only support Chinese bands, and nothing else.
It's quite a shame, since I'd happily buy this over the zenfone 2 if it came to the US.

1) Where did you get the idea that Asus won't release the bootloader?
2) The phone has barely been out. Give it some time for ROMs, they don't pop up overnight.
3) The P7k is also somewhat tempting, that's true [emoji14]

1. Yes, all menus are in English when the system language is English.
2. Ordered from aliexpress for 640 USD
3. Not sure if you mean with the shipment or if you break the device.
4. Battery life could be better honestly. I can get through the day, however I'm only getting about 4 hours SOT if I'm lucky. I was able to reach that point with my Nexus 5.

for point number 3 I meant if there are any warranty issues with the device.
for point number 4 I was looking on GSM arena and they showed the mi note as around 49 hours battery life which doesn't seem that good overall considering the mi note pro has a higher res screen.

Ah ok. Well as far as warranty goes, that would likely have to go through the 3rd party seller. So if they don't offer any type of warranty, you might be out of luck there. But yes the high res screen definitely has an impact on batter life. But it all depends on how you use your device I suppose. I can make it through the day and that is the important part for me

Is my phone fake?

Hi. I received mi mix. Bought http://www.gearbest.com/cell-phones/pp_502620.html
Package was broken and opened - will share pics later.
Case is missing and i dont have any instruction - nothing ( but just realized what is in box ) ^
Miui version is Global 8.0 Stable 8.0.8.0 MOAHCNDI looks fake for me
I do have play store already YouTube app Chrome
Location is China ( don't know if location china and those app are in china location)
Also have a question. because when i add to card wireless charger was preferred so i bought it. I don't know if this phone can be charge wireless or not? If yes where can i activate it? When i place phone on charger, charger is blinking but phone is not charged.
What should i do in this situation?
I forgot about one more question.
If i place my sim card from att will att register somehow as their phone? I would like to switch to verizon if this phone will work with verizon. Same thing i had with mi max. I tried to switch to verizon and representative said this phone is registered as att's phone.
So can i insert my sim card the switch to verizon? Btw is dual sim so i believe i can if ill work on verizon - just want to make sure
It's widely known that Gearbest were removing the cases and selling them separately.
Regarding the box being opened and the software being fiddled with, that's par for the course. The software tweaks are collectively referred to as 'vendor ROMs' and the best thing you can do for your phone is to reflash it with official firmware.
As for the wireless charger, you've been had - the Mi Mix doesn't support it.

My phone was obviously opened, because it did not come with plastic heat shrink like in the youtube videos showing first reviews and box opening. But then again, I have bought my last 4 phones like new condition so I don't care too much.
Got mine from Chinavision. I have same build, with google play store. No chrome, no you tube. I did not get the Quick charger in the box (got the leather case, the type c cable, the sim extractor and instruction pamphlet).
Cheers
Got it. Thank You for answers.
I dont want to create another thread. Can you tell me how i can flash to get OTA update?
I tried many times through updater and mi flash and still cant flash. there was something about .bat. Downlaoded 3 or 4 roms from http://en.miui.com/download-317.html Stable Rom.
Even this http://en.miui.com/a-234.html want work. I mean flash via miflash was successfully ( done in 2 sec. ) but no changebs after boot.
You're buying a phone from Chinese company. What are the chances of them being fake? Where would the fake come from? Parkistan? LOL. Anyway, I bought mine from Flossmall. I was skeptical at first but I was quite happy with them. Phone arrived 5 days later after I paid. Everything is in there. Included original leather case. Not only that, they also sent me a clear case and a tempered glass which I ended up not using because it didnt fit. Phone also came loaded with Playstore already.
Maybe thats why gearbest ignored my question, does it come with vendor rom, it didn't appear on the question and answer page, maybe it should be called question and only answer filtered questions. Got mine pre-order price so they def gonna have the case away.
I received my 6gb mix from Gearbest yesterday. It came in a black box, not shrinkwrapped, but had some tape on it like those when you remove becomes void or to show it was opened. My phone had plastic screen covers on both sides, it had the case, the usb-c cable, and charger. I do have the leather case as well. My phone is currently on MAHCNDI 8.0.8.0. It came "set up" already as I didn't have to create or enter my accounts. Maybe they unlocked the bootloader already but I can't tell. But I can't run android pay because maybe the bootloader is unlocked already.

That won't be specific to GearBest - none of the retailers will admit to flashing vendor ROMs.
Mine was NOT opened and it still has the "vendor" ROM. I do not believe that every retailer that imported Mi Mix's flashed every device they sold. It's impractical, especially since it would take a lot of collaboration between the vendors that sold the phones.
It has to be Xiaomi that flashed the "vendor" Roms because they knew that the phones would be shipped internationally.
Therefore, I believe there should be no reason for anyone to have received a Mi Mix with an open box. I've read here on XDA that GearBest and some other vendors have allegedly and purposefully taken the cases out of the boxes to be sold separately. Maybe this is the case for your shipment. The only flaw with this information I read is that I see absolutely no listings for the original "European Ecco" leather case on GearBest. I would have bought one already.
Can anyone tell me the reason why i can't get Stable Rom and get OTA update ?
Im fighting with it since i received phone and asked in 3 or 4 thread. All answers was about root/open bl/ twrp.
Don't get it. Is seriously impossible to buy from gearbest and install Stable Rom without root/twrp/open bl ?

I think the vendor ROM disabled OTA update or causes the update to be "incompatible".
Did you check whether or not it's unlocked? My phone is unlocked out of the box and basically I didn't need to request unlock from Xiaomi.
So all you need is fastboot on your PC, it's only a few files. Then in command prompt, type in fastboot oem device-info in that directory.
Mine came back device unlocked: True and Device critical unlocked true. So now I'm looking into how to flash the normal chinese ROM on this before I attempt to go to the EU version.

To each their own, but I must say:
No new one plus one will have a screen to body size ratio as good as the Mi Mix
Additionally, no new one olus one will have a 4400 mah battery
The Mi Mix's bootloader can legitimately be unlocked to flash other ROMs such as the debloated EU ROM.
I do understand though, this is pretty ridiculous. Xiaomi needs to take responsibility for the product they made and support its' customers.

I think it's important to point out OTA would only come to China (Stable Rom), that's the only Official ROM. If you want official Chinese rom for OTA, you will have bloatware and you have to go through steps to get your Google Play and Apps installed. Ask yourself what you prefer? I would pick EU Vendor rom anytime imo.
Another note, I don't get the fuss of OTA, it's not like you don't get the latest update by manually install whatever ROM you want to use, so say at this minute there is an update on Chinese rom, evern if you are on Vendor rom, you can still install the latest Chinese one if you choose to. It's really just an extra 5mins job. It's just a bit strange you want to sell this phone because you are on a ROM you think or assume you don't like.

I don't think it's Xiaomi's fault, if it's anything, they just make the bootloader unlock to be too easy for anyone to do it. You didn't purchase the phone from Xiaomi, you purchase the phone from a third party seller who installed the debloated EU ROM for you, that's hardly Xiaomi's fault. For warranty sake, you might don't even have one as you are not running the official CN rom and your bootloader has been unlocked by the third party seller.
I would pick EU Vendor rom anytime imo.
Hmm Sounds better.
So how to switch? ... still same problem

My entire package was sealed. I don't see how it is possible that the redistributer could have flashed it... Also they didn't install a debloated EU Rom, it's a totally different ROM.

Help me choose a note 4 deal!

Ok my 2 options are
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Samsung-G...%3Aaadc43d715b0a9c9732abbe7ffffe9dc%7Ciid%3A1
Excellent condition-32day money back-£176

good condition-1 year warranty-£190(unlocked)
Which one is better guys?... Also does the first one have 1yr warranty as i read somewhere that in uk law electric goods must have 1yr warranty?
If you wish to install a custom rom, FORGET about the first one! The ATT variant's bootloader is locked and no one has figured out how to unlock it! Not sure which variant the second link is though.

But it has replaceable battery ,external SD card it has also the same screen as note 5 .it is worth it, no ?
I'd go with the second one if I were you... on instinct.
Just make sure it has 4G.
The Note 5 is also worth it if you can find one around the same price.
The note 7 refurbished will also be online also.
Hi, the first one is an American variant, if you are in the UK best to forget it, you need to know the model number of the second one, the best model for thre UK is the 910F. Phil
Thanks guys for responding ill take your comments into consideration
I may have to go for the 2nd as the first has a low trust pilot rating

Should I buy the Chinese version?

Hi,
I saw an excellent deal for the chinese version - 330usd.
But it comes without google play so I guess this is the chinese rom and not the global one.
Is it true I can unlock the device via the Xiaomi web site? and can I easily (already changed dozens of roms to ~10 devices at the past) change the rom to the global version?
Are there brick issues regarding updates?
Or should I just pay another 50 usd and get the oneplus 6?
Thank you!

This question keeps getting asked almost daily. There are many threads, way too many already. As long as you keep your bootloader UNLOCKED, you can flash whatever ROM you like. You can only RE-LOCK the bootloader with ALL Partitions back to the version (china or global) that your phone came with or you WILL BRICK your device where only an Authorized EDL account (which they don't give out anymore) can unbrick the device.
I think the phone is worth it, however my only gripe right now is that you can't have ROOT and have DATA partition encrypted at the same time. I'm sure eventually will be sorted out, but i like the phone and the weekly beta updates so-far since they fixed most of the complaints i had. FYI i came from an OP3T, and though the phone may not be as friendly -i think it was worth the savings in the end.

Great, thank you for the response! sorry for the additional thread...
I have also purchased the Chinese version of this phone - previous phones before that were the Oneplus 3 and Huawei P20 and so far I think this phone is one of the best I have had, will be much better when I finally unlock the bootloader.
The only downside I can see to these phones is resale value once you decide to move phones, there doesn't seem to be that much demand for them in the same way that there is for Oneplus and Huawei.

Question Air 2s for early mi 11 ultra buyers?!

There is a thread (not sure if allowed to share links) claims that all Mi 11 ultra earlier buyers will get a push notification to redeem free Air 2s. Anyone got the push notification or that link? and anyone familiar with this news? and if it does apply to all models or just Chinese? not enough information in the thread.
The thread I got it from MIUI telegram page. if I am allowed to put links let me know and i'll share link in replies or update post.
Update: link of thread https://www.themyme.com/2021/06/15/...2s-tws-earphones-to-early-mi-11-ultra-buyers/
Post it, worst case scenario it might get deleted
This will likely be disabled for people running unofficial firmware lol
When I checked my serial number on the xiaomi authentication site ,I get a warning that my china phone is not on Chinese ROM anymore
Link added
It'll be CH only and then only to people actually in China.
Can confirm, I've gotten the earphones as part of the sale in China today. (Am currently in China)

Is it worth it? Any special functions? Worth to change from OnePlus wireless z?

Its worth it because it's free. But it's pretty much an entry level Bluetooth earbuds. I think there's no point changing if you already own one
