Note 5 freezes, reboots without any apparent reason - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Since a few days now, my Note 5 N920C just randomly freezes, hangs and reboots. Sometimes the screen goes black and then it reboots sometimes the screen is just the last thing i was using and then it reboots. It even happens when im in recovery trying to flash a zip or when the phone is switched off and charging.
I have tried:
1) Wiping Cache
2) Wiping all data / Factory reset
3) Safe mode (Still reboots)
4) Uninstalling all apps
5) Flashing stock firmware from Samsung Smart Switch
6) Rooting and flashing a new kernel (SkyHigh)
After all of this i still have the same problem. Is there something else i can do? Phone is not in warranty so i really want to make sure there is nothing else i can do to fix or understand the problem before spending money on repairs.
Thanks in advance

Have you checked that there is no power-related issues with the device?

[Q] Pandoriam Reboot Hanging at SAMSUNG boot logo

Hi Guys,
I am running Pandoriam and have twice had issues when moving the SIM card out of my S3 and the next time I rebooted it would hang at the SAMSUNG logo and wont boot up.
I would do a cache reset and a Dalvik wipe but doesnt fix it, have to do a full factory reset.
Any ideas ? I dont want this to randomly happen if the SIM slips out when knocking around my phone etc.
I think it might have something to do with Hot Boot, because if I do a Hot Boot from the Reboot menu it has the same outcome.
OK now it appears it might be linked to changing the Lock Screen.
When I change it and reboot the SAMSUNG logo appears and then it appears to generate the outside (clock / battery) icons and the overlay text (no sim / sim lock) appear... but the lock screen background is just BLACK and then crashes and reboots to SAMSUNG logo and doesn't go past the boot up.
I have some of the same issues. I left my phone charging over night. When i wake up it was frozen. I rebooted the phone and know it hang at the Samsung logo. Needed for install to fix this.
I can confirm the hot boot option. It makes a new clean re install go into Samsung logo hanging. But you can fix with a force shutdown and normal boot.
Both issues was on Pandoriam 4 Final new flash will be 4.5 maybe its fixed.

Strange, Just to be sure Wipe Data/Factory rest before installing but if you have its a weird problem because I have rebooted and reinstalled and re-tested the rom ALOT of times and have chosen most of the options and kernels and I have NEVER had this issue.
Never had any Problems with the great Pandoriam ROM... It's a beauty !!

Hi guys,
Sorry I haven't been around to update, I re-installed and tried multiple different sets of options and every single time I changed the lockscreen from the default and rebooted it would just hang.
I did all 3 wipes from recovery before and after flashes but same issue. (I flashed from recovery not PC)
As I was running version 4 at the time I upgraded to 4.5 and ran through multiple different sets of settings but same issue
I will try it again in a few versions but for now I need a working phone so I am running rXTREME V2.1 for the time being.

Stock SM-G925V Bootloop after 5.1.1 OTA

My S6 edge is in a bootloop. I put off the 5.1.1 OTA for a while when my wifi would not turn on. Rebooted, still didnt work. I decided to do the update. installation went great but now its in a boot loop. I flashed the firmware (BOG7) using Odin. It worked. The phone was back on again but then it shut off after a few hours.
Its been stuck in the bootloop again. I flashed BOG7 again. Ive Flashed BOG9. Ive flashed the stock PIT. Ive tried ADB sideload. Smartswitch and Kies do not recognize the device. Of course, Ive wiped cache and factory reset. Attempted booting in safemode. All flashes were successful but when it reboots, It says "erasing" and goes to bootloop (Samsung powered by android).... Drivers are installed and working. MTP is not installed and I cant find the file.
Please .
same problem
I'm having the same problem with boot loop on g925v stock. I'm wondering if the op or anyone else can help!
No mater what I do, phone reboots after almost exactly 1min9 sec. Just enough time to select a language, but not get past the next "activation" screen.
Background: Phone has never been rooted, at first was on og5 and started freezing on the verizon logo, so I factory data reset, and after that nothing has really changed. knox has not been tripped, frp not tripped
First I tried flashing og5 with odin,
(of course checked md5, and odin=pass, then after flashing, I always tried several combinations of booting to recovery for wipe cache partition/ factory reset / and also power down by holding volume down and power button, then select boot in safe mode)
Then tried flashing og7, still boot loop
then tried flashing og9, 3 times, again, also many attempts of factory data reset/ wipe cache partition / safe mode.
I am starting to think this may be a hardware problem, BUT unfortunately I do not have samsung warranty available on this phone so I am pretty much stuck messing with it.
In researching the issue, I have run across quite a few similar freeze/boot loop problems all over the web, and never any real solutions, for both g925v, g920v, and other s6 models. I've also seen a stock s6 g920v that freezes randomly, flashing stock og9 never helped, owner was planning to replace the battery and see if that helps (I have not heard back).
I've tried looking at the boot log but I'm no expert. I know I can't downgrade, but I'm wondering if there is anything I can do with adb, or any other bootloaders that I could try flashing over the og9 (even if just temporarily, assuming I will flash stock og9 again after).
Thanks for any encouragement, help or advice.
I finally gave up on my GS6 Edge because upon carefully taking it apart for the 3rd time I noticed physical damage up by the wifi receiver and SIM card slot. My advice would be to try the things I tried (above) and, if it's not a hardware issue, it may fix the problem. Good luck.

Note 5 stuck in loop while updating firmware at %24

Hi All,
Sorry if this is asked before. I have a new Note 5 unlocked. I turned it on yesterday and started using it. Late at night, its screen froze. I tried pressing Power+Volume_Down buttons to restart the phone. The phone restarted but the the screen was black. Only the notification light was on (blue).
In the morning, the light was still on and the phone was froze. I tried restarting it and I succeeded it. Then I realized the phone was very, I mean veeeery slow. By the time, a firmware update notification popped up. I believe it was Marsmallow update. I hit the yes button. The phone started the update and was stuck at %24. Then it restarted itself. The update process starts over and when it reaches %24, it starts over.
This happened before with my note 4 when I tried to root it. This phone is brand new and is not rooted. However, I transferred my Google profile but I did not select to download my previous apps. So, I don't think it is rooting issue but stucking at the same percentage makes me nervous.
I tried to get into recovery mode but the button combination does not work at all. So I can neither factory reset nor clear the cahe partition. When I press Volume_Down+Home+Power buttons, a custom rom download screen appears but Volume_Up+Home+Power buttons do not work at all. I cannot shut off the phone. It constantly restarts itself, starts the update, fails at %24 and starts the process over again.
What might be the problem? How can I fix this?
Regards
Hi,
Try flashing some stockfirmware via Odin (ideally something of the same android version i.e. lollipop/marshmallow). Once it's installed you should be able to access recovery from which I strongly recommend clearing your cache afterwards as you've already suggested. If you are not worried about loosing any data, then flash new firmware that is inclusive of BL/CP/CSC files too (each one has a category for such in Odin). With the latter, by all means flash marshmallow etc. :good:

galaxy note 4 (sm-n910t) caught in boot loop and won't enter to recovery.pls help

my galaxy note 4 (sm-n910t) caught in bootloop . i dont know what caused it. the phone simply restarts upto first bootscreen, ie upto 'samsung galaxy note 4' and then vibrates and then restarts.this process continues upto battery is down or i pull out battery.the phone is not entering to recovery mode but enters to download mode.
i have tried installing stock rom from sammobiles but it won't help.i have also installed custom recovery twrp but that also won't help to enter to recovery mode,
i am trapped pls help..
You didn't mention how you tried to install the stock ROM . Did you use Odin?
I just fixed mine with the same issue. I was able to boot into recovery and download mode but mostly download mode without bootloop when I had the usb cable plugged in. I used ADB when I could to boot into download mode, but the buttons worked too. Trying to restart the phone only lopped after the Google screen.
I followed several guides here to flash stock with Odin and wipe cache etc but none solved my boot loop issue. almost gave up but there is a video on You Tube that said the battery warping in the cause of the boot loop. The battery, after/during quick charge, may heat up and change shape causing the issue. Today I installed my new battery purchased on amazon and no more issues.
Now I am on stock and have to find a good rom.
If you do decide to flash back to stock there are a lot of good guides. You may find yourself stuck on the T-mobile screen for 15 minutes when booting for the first time but that is ok. If you still boot loop after installing stock and wiping cache I would try the battery.

hi OP,
did you find any solution to your problem?
Hello all. I'm also pasting this in the T-mobile thread in case it can be of benefit to someone. This is advice to use as a very last resort if you are experiencing the recovery bootloop issue AND you don't have the emmc failure bug. I had the recovery reboot, sudden shutdown with no warning, etc. issue for the past two weeks. I tried everything on Google and Youtube to fix my problem with no success. I flashed multiple stock ROMS and recovery tars (stock and TWRP) via ODIN, but nothing worked. Oddly enough, I never received the emmc error that I have read about. Also, in the few times that my phone booted normally, I even loaded the Wakelock Power Manager app, set it to partial wakelock and my phone STILL continued to bootloop. As a last resort, I bought a new battery, but the reboot problems continued in Android 4.4.4 Kitkat, 6.0 Marshmallow, 7.1 Nougat and 8.1 Oreo ROMS. Well, here is what finally helped me to get my phone back operational. I had a backup ROM from a previous install and a TWRP flashable version of the same ROM on my SD card (in case the phone did not stay on for the full restore). I put the phone into a ziplock bag into a freezer for about 20 min. (thankfully this time TWRP stayed on long enough for me to do the following):
1) copy all the files I wanted to save from internal storage to a computer.
2) performed a full wipe (Dalvic, Cache, System, etc. Like when flashing a ROM, but this time also internal storage. Note: Please do not wipe both internal and SD card, as you may have a difficult time trying to load the ROM file back on the sd card (assuming you don't have a card reader).
3) After wiping, I was able to restore my stock ROM backup (or you can just flash the stock ROM).
I can't be 100% sure, but I think my wiping internal and then flashing the stock ROM finally did the trick. Since this morning, the phone has been pretty much back to as it was before. In either case, I'm sharing this with the hope that it helps someone else.

Constant reboots

I've been facing a weird problem with my G800H since yesterday. The phone will reboot constantly. It will boot into android, I will even be able to open apps, but it will suddenly reboot after a minute or so. I didn't do anything to my phone for it to start doing this. The weirdest part is that the rebooting will happen even if I am in recovery mode (TWRP). Also, the phone will automatically turn on if I take off the battery and put it back in, something that never happened before.
I use stock 6.0.1 (rooted) and TWRP 3.0.
Things I've already tried:
Charging it;
Safe mode (same problem);
Taking off SD card (who knows);
Wipe cache/dalvik (phone restarts before finishing);
Re-install ROM ( Download mode (ODIN) doesn't open, insta-restart after 'press volume up to enter odin').
I really dont want to do a full factory reset, only as a last resort, as i don't even know if it will have time to do so, or even if it will fix it. Does anyone know a way for wiping the cache without having to format it ( takes too long in TWRP so phone restarts before finishing ), or maybe have some other way of entering download mode, maybe with adb, or finding out what went wrong. Any sugestions on what to do or what happened?
I (my wife) have the exact same problem, I bought a new battery which didn't solve the problem.
Also tried a factory reset, didn't help either.
It is a non rooted phone...
Next try is a custom rom, hope it helps...
Install an app that records logs like Logcat, set it in record mode and wait until the phone reboots. Then look through the file, study what happens near the end when the phone turns off. You'll most likely find the cause there.
