TWRP Error: 255 - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Property on my Galaxy Tab S2 MM TWRP 3.0.0. Installed. Have already made several backups, without problems.
For no apparent reason, backup creation is now aborted.
Have tried to write to the ext.Sd card and a USB stick
Have TWRP reinstalled. Without success. Times an older backup made and tried to save it again. Same error message.
Have determined that if I in the partitions selection "system" clicks error appears. For all other partitions not. Have the system partition reformatted, but nothing. Have deinstall ANTPlusTest.
If I check in the system-img check box instead of system does the backup
Does anyone have an idea what else I could make to fix the error? Also, I would be interested in what is the difference between system and system img. Is not system included in Sytem-Img? Then I would backup the system-img in the future.

It seems you may have a corrupted system partition and it fails to backup the ANTPlusTest.
System Image backup succeeds because it makes a raw copy of the entire partition, byte for byte.
Regular backup only backs up the files and folders.

That does not sound good. I had the partition already on ext4 formatted. Apparently unsuccessful. What can I do to repair the partition? I had formatted low level for hard disks. But Android?

Have you tried formatting with twrp using the advanced wipe options then flash the stock firmware or simply just delete that file?
Also something else to try. I remember someone else had the same issue, try backing up to different media. If your backing up to sdcard try internal or another sdcard or otg.

I've been here for a week on holiday and will deal with the problem afterwards.
I have formatted with TWRP ext4 and deleted the file. Wipe I had made and as medium int and ext SD card and also a USB stick. All without success.

I did with twrp wipe Dalvik / Art Cache; System; Data; Internal Storage; Cache and repair File System from System, Data and Cache.
Then I played back the last working backup. Now the error is fixed.

The Kernel splits the NAND into 2 partitions (excluding the actual partition for the kernel). The default sizes is 101MB for /system and 150+MB for /data.
Make sure the androidinstall archive's /system folder is under 97MB in size or else the install will fail, or you can change the /system partition size using atools to a larger size while sacrificing /data partition size.
I tried to install Scoot_CyanogenMod_6.1_Rls5.5 (cca 90MB size of file) and same problem... If I tried Scoot_CyanogenMod_7_alpha_RLS1_All_Language (about 112MB size of file) and I set size of system partition to 128MB in atools to my nbh file, same problem.. Iam sad.. I want to use android but I can't... :-(
Have you checked how many bad blocks you have whenever the kernel formats the NAND? It should be disabled during the "Formating..." stage.
If you have excessive bad blocks, try increasing the /system partition as far as you can, then setting /data to your SD card. It's possible your device has too many bad blocks to install android with default settings.
i have a htc kaiser and i have the same problem.
how many mb should i put for data and system with atools?
and..when i save the install-seq.sh where do i put it? in the root of sd?

yes i have solved yesterday with system 128mb to 165mb.
but i will try your setting, is good to make data with sd.
but is see on picture you choose donut, i have choise froyo setting but is good for Scoot_CyanogenMod_7.1 i use this android.

[Q] What am i doing wrong? CM10 back to Stock ROM

This is my story.
- I followed this video (below) to ROOT (SuperOneClickv2.3.3-ShortFuse) my phone.
in youtube search for: Rooting and installing custom ROM (LG Optimus 2x) HD by TheCooLuka
- Then I made a backup file on my Internal SD card as well as on my External SD card using CWM v.6.0.15. (There was a Clockworkmod folder containing: Backup and Blobs folders)
- I don't know if I did something wrong in this next step. I moved all of my files from my Internal and External (including the CWM files) to my computer. So that my phone's External and Internal SD cards were "empty".
- I then flashed to CM10, which worked great, except for the sound and mic probs.
- Now, I'm trying to return my phone to the stock ROM. I tried to flash my phone by re-importing the Clockworkmod folder (containing: Backup and Blobs folders), and running the Restore option in CWM, but it ends up BOOT LOOPING.
My question is how do I get back to my Stock ROM with my saved backup? What steps am I doing wrong?
(I'm with the Canadian carrier = FIDO, and I'm able to restore back to CM10, but I just want to figure this out)

Are you sure you Wiped Data/Dalvik/Cache? If that doesn't work, you'll probably have to NVFlash it back to stock.

u have to wipe all of the above before restoring. (from cm to stock)
also wipe system which u can found at mount option would be better.
Then restore your backup from external sdcard or u would end up boot loop.

I tried what you suggested. This is what I did:
- Moved my backup folder of "clockworkmod" containing the two subfolders (backup and blobs) onto my external SDcard.
- Then I put the SDcard into the phone.
- Booted into CWM Recovery v5.0.2.0
- Wiped data/factory reset, wipe cache partition, and wiped Dalvik cache
- Formatted system through the "mounts and storage option"
- Then tried to restore.
This is the following msg I got:
- Checking MD5 sums.....
- Restoring boot image...
- system.img not found. skipping restore of /system.
- data.img not found. skipping restore of /data.
- .android_secure.img not found. skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure.
- cache.img not found. skipping restore of /cashe.
- Restore complete!
Were not these files created with CWM restore? Am i missing files? Help?
These are the files in the BACKUP FOLDER of CWM:
.android_secure.vfat.dup
boot.img
cache.ext4.dup
data.ext4.dup
nandroid.md5
recovery.img
system.ext4.dup
I upgraded my CWM Recovery back to v6.0.1.5. and tried reflashing, but it still ends up bootlooping..
Concerning the following message, I read that sometimes you had to format (slow) the sdcard. So I did both (reformat sdcard and tried to flash with CWM v6.0.1.5), it doesn't give me the message any more, but it stilll bootloops. So I'm back on CM10 backup.
Checking MD5 sums...
Erasing boot before restore
Restoring boot image
System image not found. Skipping restore of /system
data.img not found. skipping restore of /data
.android_secure.img not found. skipping restore of /sdcard/.android_secure
cache.img not found. skipping restore of /cache
sd-ext.img not found. Skipping restore of /sd-ext
Restore complete!
Any ideas?

Please help me. Tried to change /data file system and wiped all my files...

I'm panicking very much right now.
I did a big, big stupid and accidentally wiped my entire /data partition, including /sdcard (!!) in TWRP 3.0.4.1 while attempting to change the filesystem of my /data partition from F2FS to EXT4. I did a full backup of my phone, including /data partition (but excluding /data/media/0/ which is the location for /sdcard of course) on my phone prior to attempting to change the filesystem.
I didn't think that this would also wipe /sdcard, and ALL MY FILES INCLUDING MY BACKUP...
I'm frantically searching through Google as we speak for guides to clone these formatted sectors over USB (I'd imagine using ADB shell) to a PC and use Windows file or partition recovery tools to try and save every, if not most files.
Please lend me your knowledge and links to fixing this issue, Android community. <3
In older Android versions the /sdcard partition was it's own partition, which is why I didn't think of copying all my files over to a PC before making changes to /data.
well, when you wipe data from any partition in twrp it sort of resets all space to be overwritten. The data that is marked for overwrite doesn't remain when you full wipe. Since you changed the file system, the data was removed and overwritten by the wipe with blank space.... i hope you had at least some of it backed up on your pc. I never use those apps personally, i always hard backup all my things with a drag and drop onto my pc. I highly recommend it, saves you a disaster. Im very sorry.... i hope you didnt lose anything really important.

Heh, that's exactly what happened. I'm gonna attempt this guide: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...de-internal-memory-data-recovery-yes-t1994705
Basically try to use "dd" to make a RAW copy of "dev/block/dm-0" which according to the mount command I ran in TWRP's terminal shell, is what block /data is used on OnePlus 3T (OOS 4.1.3).
Wish me luck.

Is it possible to mount data partition on PC or USB to recover data

Is it possible to mount data partition on PC or USB to recover data?
Edit: I meant userdata partition
I have tried backing up data partition using TWRP, but it prompted me that pictures and downloads will not be backed-up!
Isn't the data partition that holds my camera and download folder?
I am looking for a tool or and app that can let me take a disk image of internal SD partition, or create a whole image of my phone; so that I can use data recovery in my PC.
Making Dump Files Out of Android Device Partitions
have u try this
Thanks I have tried it but when I execute
Code:
noblelte:/ # dd if=/dev/block/sda17 of=/sda17.img
Gives me
Code:
dd: /sda17.img: Read-only file system
Just to be sure : I ran the adb code while the phone is on normally not in TWRP.
I also ran the code in TWRP terminal, while connecting a USB and mounting it.
It created the image inside the USB , however it stopped at 4GB saying the file is too large.

Are you just wanting to back up pictures, download folder, etc etc? Backing up the data partition the way you are is pointless as you're just accomplishing what twrp already does. Data partition is apps, system configurations, texts, calls, etc. Not pictures you've taking, download folder, etc.
And is there a reason you want an img file? Seems pointless to me when you can just copy it all over by drag and drop or adb pull the internal storage lol
I want to make a userdata partition image because it holds the camera album I deleted by mistake. I want to take the image and try to recover the deleted files using PC recovery software.
I found out that my problem was the 4GB limit of FAT32, so I formatted my USB flash memory using both exFat and ext4 and recovered the partition using TWRP terminal with the code above.
However I am still unable to read the image through Linux Reader and I can't attach the image as VHD.
Is what I am doing is useless? Because it came to my mind that if the recovered userdata partition is encrypted I will not be able to opened it, however, TWRP can browse the files so I guess it is not encrypted.

You may need to convert the file type of the img using simg2img, make_ext4fs, etc
You can see what the file system type of the img you have by running:
file blahblah.img
But still don't think you're going to recover them but possibly lol never tried as I sync everything to a cloud

For backing up app data, I'm more of a Titanium Backup person myself and for backing up partitions I generally prefer TWRP, but there are also apps for backing up all the different partitions as well. This is just one. Never tried it, but Wanam is a much trusted developer in the XDA community for Samsung devices.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ma.wanam.partitions
NOTE: You can always save these backups to a USB OTG device if you need to as well. That's what I do with my Titanium Backup app data files and the information is with me all the time hanging on my key chain.(More info about that under "No SD Card Slot" on this post HERE.) This information can of course always be copied to a PC too.

TWRP Backup Failed

I was doing a full backup of my device on TWRP ( all partitions are checked/selected ) the total size of my backup is 9GB
I started backing it up and i noticed that it stopped on Data Partition. I was backing up data partition for about 30 mins and still no changes then i cancel it. then there's qn error saying
e: createTarFork() process ended with ERROR=255
my data partition is all about 5gb
how can i fix this problem?
Hello, same problem with data partition maybe due to an encryption. I don't have the solution.
If you wipe or format data, that's works while stay into twrp, but on reboot system, the sdcard partition is encryted again.
Hello, I try this : "https://forum.xda-developers.com/p9/development/root-supersu-2-81-emui-5-t3612258"
and download Version 6/b - Name: SuperSUv2.82-EMUI5-noverity-Permissive.zip.
If you enter recovery mode, format data all data will be lost) and flashing this file, the new data partition will be without encryption.
Works for me : Backup data OK without error 255 and recovery settings can be memorized.

1.Backup your own boot image
2. Install this boot img via fastboot: https://mega.nz/#!JQdzjQrZ!SG3GIQsHt7sHRwj0PYGWI4Dnq5Qpk3ir-TBTLsWezF0
3.Go into TWRP and backup your Firmware
4.Restore your normal boot image
It should work like this
That's about the FBE (if you're trying to backup EMUI /data partition).
There's no TWRP that currently supports backuping the PRA /data partition.
