Restoring w/ Titanium hung on SMS for 45 minutes - Nexus 6 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just flashed PureNexus N and am restoring apps + system data with Titanium. It started with the system data, and #2 on the list is SMS/MMS. It asked about using Titanium SMS or my default, and I selected Titanium thinking that was necessary for the restoration.
It's now been 45 minutes and it's still on the restoration of SMS/MMS, but it hasn't failed and the phone is working. Is this normal or do I need to find a way to stop that restoration and do something different? Thanks.

You made the correct choice when you selected Titanium for your SMS app and I think it will popup again after the restore and then you should select your default SMS app. The last time I restored SMS messages from Titanium Backup it took about 25 minutes, it probably just depends on how many you have.

Yeah. it took 3 hours. I wish there was an easy way to delete old texts.

The only way I've found to do so is with SMS Backup & Restore: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestore&hl=en
Once you've done a backup, do a test restore just to be sure it works. Then delete all messages on the phone (I think stock Messenger app will let you do that.) Then choose restore in SMS Backup & Restore and pick a date to restore from. In my case, I use Textra, but you must let the backup app switch to itself temporarily to do the restore, then open Messenger to reload the messages. Then open Textra and choose it as the default, and resync to load the reloaded messages from Messenger.
If there's an easier way to do this, I'm all ears!

Will batch work on the TB free version?
If I remember correctly - in free version you can batch backup, but you can't batch restore, or the batch restore is limited speed.
When you batch restore with the free version, you have to confirm each one. Fun.

Thanks Man
Menu > Batch > Backup all user apps + system data : is there any difference between this and a nandroid backup? i mean does it make an image with EVERYTHING you have on your phone?
No it doesn't make an image of everything on the phone like a nandroid backup
A nandroid backup backs up the system, data, cache, and a few other things like ext and recovery depending on how you set it but a titanium backup just backs up apps and data (which are on the data and cache partitions).
You can also create an update.zip to put in your recovery folder and flash that way too. You can set a schedule to back up new, new versions or all. IMHO, pay the money. It has helped me in several instances. You can convert system to data or vice versa, un/attach apps to market and my favorite is you can clean your Dex right from the app.
Somewhere way back I thought folks were having issues restoring System with TB and recommended just doing apps/data--
Right or Wrong?
I like MyBackUp Pro as a quicker (non-nandroid) bu of system/sms/mms/call logs/home screens/settings etc

Well, the issue is that some of the restored settings were conflicting with what was in there. If you restore system back to the same version (of CM or Android), then it should be problem free. But if you are restoring between nightlies of CM or major releases of stock, then options may have changed and restoring *can* cause conflicts that result in funky operations or bootloops. This doesn't happen all the time, but it has happened enough to me that I don't recommend it.
My recommendation is to just backup all your apps and app data (I also include TB's backup of wifi access points, bluetooth pairings, google accounts, call logs and sms messages). It really doesn't take too long to go and check all your settings. Plus it gives you the opportunity to see what new features were added.
And in all honesty, I am not sure MyBackup Pro would be any different in the above... both just backup the data and restore it. I think if one were to cause an issue, the other one would as well.
Thanks for info bass,
I never restore system with TB, only backup/restore apps--no issues
I started using My BackUp before rooted, so as to have a bu of things if root went wrong. Just kept using it
Never had an issue restoring system with My BackUp, even after a month of nightlies
Main thing I like it for is Home Screens--saves time after fresh flash

That is definitely a benefit to using a 3rd-party launcher. I use ADW EX and everything for that app is saved in the app data, so as soon as I restore the app I am back to normal (well, except for my widgets and the background, but there are only two widgets that I use). But I do definitely sympathize on not wanting to redo all your settings. I hate it when I forget something simple like changing the wifi back to never turn off.
Agreed--
I use ADW with CMN's but not EX. Haven't looked real close at its restore capabilities. But, My Back Up does CM/Sense/MIUI restores with Home Screens with no problems
Just comfortable with it--
titanium backup restored my adw ex just fine minus the widgets.
thank you i was looking for that.

Flashing-Restoring-Titanium Backup-Serendipity

I am going to reflash Serendipity 3.5.2 tonight. I backed up with MyBackupPro, but it didn't restore all of my apps and data - but SMS worked with that backup. I then restored my TB and my texting problem returned - I can't send any texts, but I can receive them. I get a messaging forced closed every time I try to send one.
My question is, can I go through that TB backup somehow and delete any reference to messaging and restore after that? How would one go through their backup and make this change? I want to restore with TB because it did a better job, but I don't want the problem back. Suggestions??
TiBu
I'd recommend Titanium Backup.
When you restore, only restore "Missing apps with data".
Restoring SMS stuff is a "system" function, and will not be restored. Then, you can go thru the list and VERY SELECTIVELY pick system items you do want restored, such as wifi access points, widgets, accounts, etc.

Thank you for your help. What I need to know is how to selectively pick system items?
The other thing is I selected 'missing apps with data, yet still this messaging problem came back. I have deleted GO SMS completely, I'm not convinced it didn't cause my problems. I ran the batch operation to delete the deleted apps from the backup. I would really like to get rid of anything messaging before I restore this time, if that's possible. I see several possibilities:

I believe the theme ones are for GO SMS, so they're probably ok to not bother with, but those first eight I think need to go. Can I delete them within TB somehow?
In TiBu system apps are red, system data is green, 3rd party is white.
The only reason to restore a system app is if you uninstalled it. Don't restore a system app from a previous ROM on a newer ROM. Don't restore system data from older Android versions (i.e. 2.1 -> 2.2) because the data format may be different. If you know you need settings for a system app, restore data only. Test it, and if it fails, go back and delete only data. There's a "Wipe data" for those.
The green ones are what you're most likely interested in. Tap one, hit restore. It's that easy. If you don't know what it does, stop there, exit TiBu and test everything to find what changed. If something stops working, go back to that item in TiBu and uninstall it (Green items only) and it should work again.
But before doing any of that, a nandroid backup will save lots of time of you crash the phone.
Ok, so basically I'd have to go through and restore one by one - tedious, but may be necessary. I was hoping I'd be able to delete files from the backup and then run the batch. Well, to keep texting I think that's what I'll have to do. I do have a Nandroid backup of my Assonance installation (but that may have the texting problem in it, too, it started on Assonance). Thank you so much for the help!

I always restore"all missing apps with data". Then I selectively restore wifi access points and widgets. Sometimes the widgets don't restore properly, but I've never had it cause any problems.

ee, that's the problem, I didn't restore system data, I restored apps and data - and somehow my previous texting problem appeared again. When I flashed last night, texting worked. Eureka, I was thrilled. But all of my stuff wasn't back. I set the path for my TB backup on my external card, did my restore, and no more texting. Very frustrating. I want my data, but I may end up starting from scratch, or going one by one as CuriousTech has suggested.
Right. It's really pretty quick once you get the hang of it.
Backup all user apps + system data.
Restore missing apps with data. Go through and uncheck anything you don't need, then let it run. Often times I do a restore of app+data of apps I know have important data, then again with app only of games and such, but it's not necessary.
Then manually go through the green items.

[Q] Best way to restore sms and contacts after flash?

Hey guys whats the best way or is there a way to restore all your contacts and text messages after rom flash. After every flash I have to redo all my contacts with photos and lose all texts, I use titanium back up for the apps but they say not to restore system data with tibu. thanks
The green system settings should be ok to restore, [sms/mms/apn] dialer storage will have your texts,.and contact storage will have your contacts.
Just restore those individually. Works for me.
i keep all my contacts in google so i never have to restore those, and for sms/mms/call log backup and restores i use
sms backup +

I use My Backup Root. When you back up Data (not apk data), you are given a choice of what you want to back up. When you restore data, you are also given a choice of what to restore.
When you restore APK+ Data, you are restoring data from the apks, not system data (with My Backup, TiBu may be different).
The only downside to my backup is most roms don't preload it like tibu. You gave to download from market after every flash.
If this has been any help, please don't forget to hit Thank You.

if you copy the apk somewhere and put it in /data/app in the rom zip before you flash you won't have to download it from the market. Fyi
Interesting, anyways i just used Ti-Backup to reload my text messages
I backed up:
[SMS/MMS/APN] Dialer Storage 2.2.1
And have none of my text messages on the new ROM. Granted it's nice to clear out, I had some things I wanted to keep
Should I have backed up:
[SMS/MMS PREFS] Messaging 2.2.1
Instead for future reference and purposes?

Have you rebooted since restoring that data? If not, do it.
Android Manager for me. No Google cloud needed. Also, you can export your contacts to a .vcf file before you flash and restore from it after. Do this within the Contacts app.
Yeah... the rebooting thing. My ignorance, and my apologies. All texts are back now

It backs up your home screen, minus widgets. But I think it only works on touchwiz launchers.
And you can back up almost everything, contacts sms, apps, etc.for a detailed list, look on the market page.
If I'm wrong, those with more knowledge please clarify.

If you have Titanium Backup Pro....think you can extract from the Nand backup...I would suggest you to try MyPhone Explorer where you can backup your apps, messages and contacts+files to the computer easily via wi-fi, USB, BT as well.

My sim contacts don't show up in cm also.
Titanium doesn't save sms, at least for Go, I've never had them restored except for private box. The only way is to save them from within Go. Try Appextractor that can retrieve sms from nandroid.

Open the Contacts and I remember there is something to be selected, to show the SIM+Phone contacts....if not, only the phone contacts are only shown. Check the CM thread...you will get some answer there....
BTW perhaps Go just read sms in stock sms app that's why they are not saved by titanium. Try to restore stock sms app's data.
If you backed up the sms you will find them in GOSMS/backup just take the latest backup and paste it into /sdcard/GOSMS/backup/SmsRestore and then from GO SMS app restore the msges.
Hello!
For backup of your SMS, calendar and contacts use MyPhoneExplorer – as already stated - it is free and will backup those including all SMS.
Titanium backup is good for your apps – but since you contact/sms/calendar app has changed it with the update to CM7 – Titanium won’t help you cause it only restores data for specific apps – and if they aren’t there it doesn’t restore the data for them.
As for the contacts from SIM - did you do import from SIM?

Yes I have and it says "No contacts on your SIM card." I have tried my sim card in another phone and there is contacts.
I have tried AppExtractor and it restored contacts!! They still not showing from sim though
Hello!
I don't use contacts from SIM since my old Nokia 3210-days - so I don't know any other methods...sorry...
You could try to bluetooth the contact using your other phone - if it is able to or try to export some other format (i.e. vcal).
I used Thunderbird with plugin for vcal to import my old contacts from my SE P1i.
Me too, I use only google sync.
Ok. Thank you for all your help.
I have got them back using AppExtractor. On the stock rom contacts there was a option to import facebook contacts. Is it possible in cm?
Hello!
I don't use facebook - so I will guess...
I am pretty sure it should be automatic if set it up in...
setting > accounts & sync
...if you have installed the facebook app - that is - of course...
When you set it up to sync with calendar/contacts it should do so automatically - at least this is the way it does with my MS Exchange and WhatsApp account.

Titanium Backup restore

Hi all. I just flushed the new Revolution HD rom to get 4.3 but having problems to restore my backups from Titanium. I read a lot about Titanium so decided to backup my stuff with it to restore later but now when I try to restore my contacts I get the "com.android.phone has stopped". I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong. Do i need to restore data only or app + data? I seem to have trouble with SMS restore as well. Any other way I can use the Titanium files to restore my contacts? Thanks for the help.
Have you backupped also the system apps with titanium and no you want to restore all?
If yes is this the problem.
You have to backup only the data or the apps that aren't in system folder

Well my initial backup I just did a batch backup of everything on the phone so yea I have system and data. Now what I'm trying to do is get my contacts from the backup. I just tried to import the data (green) of my contacts in Titanium but it didn't work. Then I re-flushed and tried to restore SMS (green) from Titanium that didn't work either (sms icon disappeared from the phone).
Now I keep reading that it's not good to use Titanium to restore system apps (sms, contacts) but is there another way to use the data saved with Titanium to restore? I just want my contacts and sms to be back. Thanks.

However, i don't know how to restore only the contacts and the sms.

Ah man that sucks for me cuz I don't sync contacts with google either. I was really hoping TB will do it all for me. My previous rom was ARHD but older version with 4.2.2.
Titanium sucks, as does their support. Had same issues as you and they would not assist me at all. Good thing I had another backup using Helium.
