How to flash new ROM - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hello everyone! I am sorry if this is somewhere already been told but I could not find it..
I am buying Xiaomi Mi5, sealed box, with some Chinese ROM so I would need to flash some global ROM. As I am told the bootloader is open. What are my next steps?
1. Install TWRP?
2. Then install ROM?
Are there any instructions on how to do that? I have done that on my previous LG but that was long ago so I dont remember any more.
If you could help I would very much appreciate it!

sealed box = bootloader closed
1- Update to latest chinese dev rom, download from miui site and install through updater
2- open bootloader through MIUI tool, search online for it
3- install TWRP through cmd
4- I think you can now install non-miui roms, but personally I just wiped data and installed supersu and used the miui rom

I believe that it comes with open bootloader.
Installation through cmd is the same for any device? Is there any tutorial about it?

I just bought Mi 5 with China ROM (my first Xiaomi device). I was planning to install Global ROM but decided to give the China ROM a go. installed the MIUI v8 update, removed some unwanted Chinese apps, and installed Google stuff. Actually works very well and loving it so far. No issues at all. I recommend you give it a go if you want.
Otherwise I suggest you read these two threads on the official MIUI forums. Should give you the basics and all you need to install the Global ROM.
http://en.miui.com/forum.php?mod=viewthread&tid=106428
http://en.miui.com/thread-307744-1-1.html

Thanks man! I will give it a go!

i dont understand why you ask for answer, receive, but not the one you hoped and still saying its open..?
Since 1 year Miui only ships locked bootloaders, so when sealed its 100% locked.
Just try unlock through app/website: http://en.miui.com/unlock/
for tutorials, there are plenty on miui forum site, or here on xda
Good luck

first you need update to last miui version (stable or dev not problem at all) then unlock (bootloader) your device, after that download global fastboot rom, and flash using XiaoMiFlash.
but, before you flash to global. i want tell you 1 thing. this is my opinion,
Global rom is suck! rom base Chinese is great much more better on audio, camera and etc, except the rom only have 2 language chines and english, and you need manualy install gapps.
on my preference MIUI official rom is, China dev -> China Stable -> Global Dev -> Global Stable.

i don't know if this is related, but since we don't have sd card slot we have to leave the internal storage unwiped. And I like to wipe the entire phone when i flash a new rom. So my question is how do you wipe the internal storage and still have the files required to flash rom?

internal storage is not a single partition, the bootloader and recovery are in separate partitions and don't get wiped. What is deleted when you choose to wipe internal storage is only system, data, cache and (emulated) sdcard.

I recieved yesterday mi new MI5 64 Gb, with rom version MIUI 8.1.3.0
I´m trying to instal TWRP on my device but always recive the same error:
FAILED (remote: Partition flashing is not allowed)
and stops working
Is this issue related with the unlock of the mobile?
I applied for the unlock, but I recieved a sms and afterwards a new screen that I will recieve a new sms in some days, How long do I have to wait until they unlock it?
Best Regards

The first SMS with the code should be quick (you already have it, i understand).
The second is in most cases within a few hours, but officially can be up to 10 days.
After you received the SMS with permissions, you can try to unlock, but if that does not work, wait 24 hours (i had to wait a day before the permissions were 'connected' to my Mi account).

Well spotted you flashed it? If so via twrp with full wipe?
What about GAPPS is it 64bit version?
Are we downloading for LEO?
Jeez to many questions, just think someone might mess up.
I'll test and report back.

So I downloaded the EU rom, make sure you download for Leo, installed via TWRP with full wipe as per instructions. To be honest if your from uk no point its still english US not UK, For everyone else yea go for it no problems and Playstore included.
Is there no improvements from 6.5.1.0 version?
Also how do I flash twrp on my phone? Do I need root?
Thanks

Here you go bro :
http://en.miui.com/thread-118114-1-1.html
I just flashed this rom and i can confirm that it works well here in the uk on the ee 4g network no problems for me and very happy with this phone
Are there any instructions on how to install it?
I found TWRP, but need root to install it which i don't have.
Just boot to TWRP first via fasboot by using fastboot boot twrp.img command,
Then flash supersu,
After u got root access, install flashify and flash twrp
Is French included in this ROM? Probably not...
Will my apps be in French anyway or will it go like the UI?
Hi - I tried installing the most recent stable version for the Note Pro (xiaomi.eu_multi_leo_V6.6.3.0.LXHCNCF_v6-5.0) and it was completely unusable. Lots of system processes failing etc. Has everyone else had this experience or am I doing something wrong? I installed initially through TWRP, then also tried through MiRecovery.
Just got the phone and really liking it, but very keen to get it working more like a UK phone! Great to see there's people working on this!!!

It works fine for me in UK, full wipe in TWRP? You said first with TWRP and then Mi, did you reflash original recovery. I always find that after flashing a new rom I have to reflash GAPPS or I get the problems you describe.
I had been unsure if the 'Wipe All' would also scrub the ROM zip file, so did not do this first time.
This time I did wipe everything, which also resulted in the ROM zip file being deleted.
Managed to sideload it and everything is now working! Many thanks for the suggestion. And for future, should I be wiping everything, or is there a way to avoid the sideload?
Thanks

Like I said just reflash google apps no need for full wipe, use TWRP, keep a copy of GAPPS on your phone along with the rom so wiping won't be a problem should you need too.

Unable to change rom

hey guys, i got my mi 5 yesterday, and i am having a hard time switching from global 7.2.3.0 to any other rom.
current device : Indian mi 5, on 7.2.3.0 global stable rom + LOCKED BOOTLOADER
when i try to flash china stable or global dev rom using recovery method, it says couldn't verify package.
when i try to flash china rom using mi pc suite it says "ROM package's signature cannot verify"
i am really fed up of this current global stable rom and would like to switch asap, and hence i have also applied for unlocking my bootloader, but its gonna take some time.
please help me out.

This is 6.5.20, Global Beta ROM. I don't know about difference per se but I flashed it yesterday from Global Stable and it worked. The flashing took a long time but it worked.

No, I did it just like that, no factory reset, no unlocked bootloader, no nothing. Just directly from Global Stable to this.

What I received on purchase almost a month ago was 7.2.2.0 which was suspended but then 1 Global Stable update came and I got to 7.2.8.0 but that got suspended too. Yesterday this Beta ROM showed up on the Chinese side of MIUI forum and I grabbed it quickly.

It took REALLY LONG, maybe 30-40 minutes to an hour. But after that it's been the best ROM so far.

Xiaomi Mi 8 China to Global Rom

Hi,
I had a bricked phone and I have managed to fix it.
At the moment I have China rom installed which I don't really want to use. It has no Google services and a lot of Chinese apps.
So I just want to double check.
1. I unlock bootloader with the Mi unlock app.
2. Then simply flash global rom with Mi Flash and definitely make sure to only select cleanall.bat and not cleanall_lock.bat.
Is that all I have to do? Some posts recommend different things and some just say do this so I want to make sure.
Thanks,
No.. you cannot simply flash Global if your phone chinese version.
Read... so much thread about it and people have brick because of it.

There's like one guy on YouTube that basically says to do this.
Then there's some on a forum that days to do a lot of things.
There's just so much random stuff from many threads that it is hard it know what should be done... That's why I ask here for definite answer.
Dude I have a Chinese version Mi8 and after unlocking the bootloader I used the eu.miui pie rom and then jumped straight to the custom roms. Also i did format my data by typing yes in twrp after flashing the eu,miui and lost all the stuff on the internal storage, which really did not matter as I had just unlocked the bootloader and everything had been wiped clean anyways.
Been using two Xiaomi phones and have never flashed any MIUI roms only eu.miui and never had any problems
Doesn't matter. Gotta wait 15 days before I can unlock it and flash. Strange as my account was approved some years back to do the same with a Redmi but oh well. I guess I will wait 15 days...

i've just flashed a chinese mi 8. Just unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP and flash the rom.
i used xiaomi.eu rom for the last one. Now i've a Mi8 explorer edition in my hands and need to wait for the 15 days are gone than i'll flash xiaomi.eu rom here too.
BUT never re-lock the bootloader again after you've flashed a other rom than the orignal rom, your device will brick.

Okay, so when you updated to Q and then reverted back to P you messed up the persist.img, it's a part of the phone that regulates many sensor with the proper value.
what we need to do is fix the persist.img, luckily Orange fox will help up in that regard!
So first things first we need to get a replacement persist.img
Start by booting into Orange fox and make a backup of everything except internal storage.
go to https://xiaomifirmwareupdater.com/miui/raphael/ and get the latest china rom for fastboot (at the time of this writing, it's V10.3.17.0.PFKCNXM )
Once it has finished downloading open it like a zip using 7zip, inside should be a .TAR file, open it again like a zip and inside that unarchived TAR file should be a folder called "image" and within that one, will be a file called "persist.img".
Take the persist file and put it in your phone's storage, in orange fox select the file and options will be presented to you as to where to flash the image file, select of course the persist partition.
after this wipe cache and reboot.
The first boot will have a couple of issues, the phone will need to recalibrate itself, follow the instructions on the screen (open the front camera, clibrate gyro, etc).
After that you should be all set my friend

Allright, first I never mentionned anything about flashing a fastboot rom, so you need to take it easy and follow instructions attentively (don't panic it's all gonna be okay)
Since you relocked your bootloader you just have to unlock it again using the many guides posted on this forum (I will not help you with this since there's already plenty of thread on the subject)
after your bootloader is back to an unlocked state, you re-installed OrangeFox and you flashed the ROM you want follow the procedure I typed to the letter and you'll be fine.
As for how to flash the "persist.img". In the "files" tab in OrangeFox just tap on the "persist.img" file and in the window that opens you will have a chance to select to which partition you wanna flash the file (you need of course to select the "persist" partition)

Why don't you go to their website https://xiaomi.eu/ or search this forum
Precaution: Do not embark on it without first researching this. There is a genuine risk of bricking your phone in case of missteps.

I have flashed Xiaomi.eu on global so many times on Mi 11 ultra and never had an issue. However, this does not guarantee you may not have issues.
The most prudent approach for you can be; first, know the region of your phone, flash the official ROM for that region WITHOUT LOCKING THE BOOTLOADER (MUST KEEP IT UNLOCKED), then flash the Xiaomi eu ROM.

I have the Chinese version phone. Unlocked the bootloader and tried almost all available ROMs available out there on it including from Chinese to xiaomi eu, global to xiaomi eu, and vice versa.
For Mi 11 ultra, the Chinese region is not a hindrance to installing Xiaomi eu on it.
If you still have doubts, posting in Xiaomi.eu forums may be more useful.

For Mi 11 ultra, the Chinese region is not a hindrance to installing Xiaomi eu on it.
If you still have doubts, posting in Xiaomi.eu forums may be more useful.

I really have hard time understanding, what you are trying to do.. so you got a phone with global rom, and you want the EU-Version on your phone... so do you mean the EEA-Rom?

same answer as before i did search already but all data available for flash Xaiomi EU rom on original chinese rom not (chinese phone with previous installed global rom)
my quesion is very simple
can i flash directley on global rom or need to flash chinese rom first then flash xaiomi EU?
Ask yourself why you should do that? You inject twrp and format data then flash ROM zip, done.

nice this simple for you as expert but as beginer as me i need some details. why every expert her dealing with the beginners as ignorant there was some days all of you was beginners
You only assume I am an expert, for me an expert is a developer. This is my first Xiaomi phone and all I know I read it on guides. These are easy and logical assumptions.
i remember @xNAPx what you all asking

If the answers weren't out there it would be different BUT THEY ARE if you bother to look
It's NOT the same as threads asking people to compare battery life vs the s21 models etc
Guys, would you please stop bickering?
Questions on XDA are to be answered nicely or ignored, there is no other way ... thread cleaned a little.

Buddy, your situation is even easier because you don't have to go through the hassle of unlocking your bootloader,it is already unlocked! With that possibilities are endless.
Download on your PC and install "minimal adb and fastboot"
Download on your phone the EU ROM of your choice (stable or weekly)
Download on your pc the twrp compatible for your phone, rename the twrp image into "twrp.img" and move it into you "minimal adb and fastboot" folder
Boot into fastboot
Connect your phone to PC
Run adb
Check if phone is recognized with the command "fastboot devices"
Now boot into twrp with the command "fastboot boot twrp.img"
Twrp will now boot into your phone, it will be in Chinese, so you must change the language first unless you understand chinese: to do that you press the third button on the right, you tap onto the "worldish" icon and select English.
Now you go to install, browse until you find the rom you downloaded, you flash.
Once completed wipe dalvik and cache, and DO NOT RESTART. Go back instead to the main page, select now WIPE then FORMAT DATA and type YES to confirm, NOW YOU CAN REBOOT when prompted.
You installed successfully the Xiaomi EU ROM.
Be aware that first boot can take quite a lot of time. Be also aware that FORMATTING DATA WILL DELETE EVERYTHING ON YOUR DEVICE, so backup first what you want to keep
