BOOT LOOP after unchecking "mount namespace separation?" - SuperSU

Hi, does un-checking the mount namespace separation option in Supersu cause boot loop in Cyanogen OS 13?
Oneplus One, Cyanogenos-13-1-2-znh2kas3p0.
I had to use the Pro+Systemless installer bug / unSU Script zip, from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63615067&postcount=2459, to boot into the system again.
Any clarification will be greatly appreciated.

[solved] Uninstall Magisk module offline/without Magisk?

(other thread here)
It seems that a Magisk module that I have recent installed (no idea which one) is preventing my phone to boot correctly. I know that because reflashing the latest OTA update removes Magisk and then it works perfectly. As soon as I flash Magisk, it doesn't boot anymore.
Even after flashing SuperSU, Magisk Manager doesn't let me see/remove installed modules.
Is there a way to do that?

Use mount-magisk.zip found in collection of modules thread and delete the folder via twrp in /magisk

I searched for "Magisk module offline uninstall" but did find anything. This was exactly what I needed! The culprit was App Systemizer. I've had it installed for some time and it didn't cause any problems. I uninstalled it, and it worked! Flashing it again restored the boot problem.

How did you uninstalled the troubled module?
I'm having the same problem with a module but I don't even have a /magisk folder.

Install "Uninstaller Mod Magisk" from TWRP. Then go in the TWRP terminal and type uninmod_magisk and follow the instructions.
please post the link to thread unistaller magisk module, to other users follow the solution!

I will uninstall "Audio Compatibility Patch" V1.0 from zackptg5 & ahrion
In Magisk Manger Status is always " Module will be updated at the next start"
If i use the "TWRP-Uninstaller" the Modul is not in List!

If you have a current version of Magisk installed, yes you do. Enable viewing hidden files and folders in your file explorer. The dot at the beginning of the folder name means it's hidden...

If you can launch TWRP then :
Check magisk.img exist
1. Go to "advanced" and then click on "File Explorer".
2. Check there is "magisk.img" file under "/data"
Backup magisk.img
1. Go to "advanced" and then click on "terminal command".
2. type following command

cp /data/magisk.img /data/magisk.img.bk
Mount magisk.img
1. Make a temp folder
Code:
mkdir /mktmp
2. Mount magisk.img to /mktmp
Code:
mount -o loop /data/magisk.img /mktmp
3. Navigate to mktmp and remove your module
Code:
cd /mktmp
rm -rf /mktmp/xxxx
Unmount magisk.img and reboot to check if it's work
1. Unmount magisk.img
Code:
umont /mktmp
2. Leave terminal and reboot the phone
3. Enjoy!

My Phone Specification : Moto X Play ------ 7.1.1 Stock Firmware -------- Squid kernel --------- rooted using Magisk ------ systemless xposed module "xposed_25" installed using magisk module(Uninstalled by this method !) .:victory:

Own domain huh? Business growing? Hehehe I only came for the uninstall zip, hey quick question, I'm on a micro sd-less phone (big news), still a flashaholic, kinda, but my phone so happens to require a data format every time for gsi's, where would you recommend keeping the "things to keep on your device" (Magisk related) so i don't have to carry an otg and drive everywhere i go? Thank you sir, you almost get more thanks than posts! Talk about reputation!

Do you have to completely wipe the device? Or can you keep internal storage intact? If not, it sounds like you're out of luck.

Well i do a factory reset, flash system img and reboot, let it loop because it will, and then do a data format before it will boot, so system, caches, and data go... (Huawei, see)

Would be cool if someone could share the adb solution. In the FAQ is just written "email me for this" wtf?!? It is ****ing anoying to reflash the whole system everytime a module isnt working (yeah thats what you need to do if your device doesnt have twrp, and a lot of a/b devices dont have twrp). Also you need to delete all user datas because you flashed the system new and the new system doesnt know the encryption key for the user datas. There need to be a better solution than using twrp or email the dev for adb solution.
The easiest way would be to make it possible that magisk manager can manage (remove/deactivate) the modules while there is no patched boot.img installed. This would solve all problems related to a/b devices without twrp and magisk modules (not booting or anything else) just flash stock boot.img remove the problematic module flash patched boot.img and done. This is not possible because the module section in magisk manager is hidden when there is no patched boot.img installed.
Second thing i noticed, magisk manager doesnt reset the active modules when you wipe the app data. This should be a MUST. Would also solve the problem of not booting modules without wiping the whole system on a/b devices without twrp.

Hi!. I have this user of XDA Dev. hanging out for a time... well the fact is I'm new. My problem (not the only one) maybe merge a kind of solution to this. And this could be putting the ".disable_magisk" blank file inside the cache partition as an ADB Sideload update.
Next to this. I've found that to do that it's not as simply as it seems to be cause I'm on a Samsung Galaxy S7 Nougat 7.0 Version. And all the examples with update-binary file I have, are from downgrade versions...

I need to know how to locate the mount point of my /cache partition at the stock recovery ADB Sideload. Then, to mount it, transfer the blank file to it, and then unmount /cache. I think it's an easy labor. So here my incomplete updater-script:

SuperSU making /system read-only in TWRP and FlashFire?

Hi,
I'm running CyanogenMod13 on my galaxy S4 with TWRP 3.1.1.0 and I wanted to flash XPosed. The xposed page says that it's only compatible with SuperSU so I installed latest Stable SuperSU 2.82 and deactivated root access on CM13 in developer options. Then I tried flashing Xposed framework zip but it complained about /system beeing a read-only file system and I realized that TWRP didn't ask me anymore if I want read-only file system (which it always did before I installed SuperSU) anymore. Looking into "Mount" I see that "system" is not mounted by default but also making a checkbox there doesn't change anything even if "Mount system read-only" is not checked. BTW: Do I have to apply the mounts somehow or is activating the "checkbox" actually enough. Maybe my problem is just that system is not mounted r/w which is my current guess but I don't know how to mount it r/w now that SuperSU is installed.
Then I though, ok if mounts are incorrect in TWRP let's use FlashFire. So I selected to mount system r/w in option for flashing and started the flash. Again even if I selected mount system partition r/w flashfire reported read-only file system. I also tried downgrading to SuperSU 2.79 but same effect.
What the hell is going on since I flashed SuperSU. Is my root now partially broken? The Apps all are working fine, it's just modifying system partition is somehow not possible neither in TWRP nor FlashFire....
Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated.

Try my SuperSU systemmode from here.
Thanks for the link and it also gave me hint what to google for. It seems that my SuperSU is running in systemless mode, so I would need Systemless Xposed too. Unfortunately this also requires Magisk to be installed and Magisk doesn't work with adoptable storage which I can not live without. So I will give your SuperSU version a try and run it in System Mode and try to install official xposed too. Hopefully this works.

I had a hard-time switching from systemless mode to system mode cause you have to completely unroot and restore the patched boot image fully (just un-rooting and restoring doesn't do the trick) fortunately I had a nandroid backup from prior to rooting with untouched backups of "boot" and "system" which I could restore. Finally I was able to install the system mode SuperSU (although I didn't use your package, but created a .supersu file with SYSTEMLESS=false) and flashed it.
This now enabled me to run latest Xposed in system mode which was failing when trying to flash in systemless mode. I would have needed magisk (which is incompatible with adoptable storage) to run it systemless. I tried using the old 86.2 systemless xposed but that always resulted in a boot loop whenever I activated one of the xposed modules). Now it's working fine., Thanks for the hint ho led me find out what system mode and systemless really is.
So actually my problem is solved, just couldn't find out how to edit the thread title....

Magisk modules install but not there upon reboot

So I wrote a post yesterday (plz delete it) it seems some modules won't mount Magisk img but the ones that do install successful and upon reboot are not under modules category (I'm running a huawei nova plus with xposed) have tried flashing in twrp same thing it installs I reboot and it's not there

Your device has issues with loop mounts. Something that Magisk relies on to do it's thing.

F2fs? I'm not sure what that is sorry I'm used to supersu and basic root it wasn't until recently I got into the big boy toys
Oh a flash friendly file system I don't I'm on ext4 should I go ahead and make the switch (I have a full back-up from last night's bricking war so I can just restore if it bricks me again correct?)

I was just wondering, because there's a few devices with a flawed f2fs implementation that has the issue you experience.
It could also be a kernel thing...

So I went ahead and did f2fs my /data is already f2fs but converting system to f2fs and flashing back my system restore causes the system to brick right right after boot had to make system ext4 again

The data partition is the one that matters, I believe. It is possible that changing the data partition to ext4 might fix your issue.

On the huawei nova plus /data is encrypted and you have to decrypt it by formatting it in twrp and then your able to mount/data in twrp(which we need for a lot of things) switching to ext4 completely breaks the data partition until it is back under f2fs

If your issue is because of the f2fs partition, that'd mean you're SOL... Unless there's a custom kernel available that has the issue fixed.

What about doing something like this
no big deal....just dload the zip and look for the app or file in it... and apply to where it belongs... like new Oreo Emojis...ive dloaded the zip,found the file, then paste the file in /system/fonts...then reboot

Then you're just doing regular system modifications and don't need Magisk modules.
Perfectly fine if you don't need to keep your system partition untouched and don't mind re-doing those modifications after a system update.

Say I found a kernel but it's for 6.0.1 can I flash that to 7.0.1 or should I just attempt to install the whole rom

Flashing a kernel that's not intended for the system you have installed is usually just asking for trouble.

Kernal aduiter can I use it it to fix this issue if so how
I am also facing somewhat similar problem. The modules were all working fine earlier. All of a sudden they have disappeared, tried reinstalling them, but they don't appear in the list of modules.

Looks like I'm not the only one with a Huawei device having issues
When I download the modules from within Magisk Manager it says Magisk not activated despite Magisk Manager showing that v14.0 is installed
I then install from within TWRP and the installation is fine but upon rebooting no modules are displayed
I only had this issue when I updated to v5.4.3
Here the same on Xperia Z5P 7.1.1 Stock.
The modules are disappeared after reboot.
On Lineage 14.1 all worked fine. Now back on stock and magisk don't work...

I've updated the APK with auto-update this morning and installed the 14.6 Beta-Zip.

Problem installing modules (magisk.img failed to mount)

I've tried installing multiple modules by both directly using the magisk manager and flashing them in recovery and both don't work, I'm using magisk 15.1, on Android 6, mtk6735 device. The problem I face is that in magisk manager when I try to install a module it says "magisk is not activated" and during the installation during recovery mode it says "magisk.img failed to mount", any help would be gladly appreciated

The problem I face is that in magisk manager when I try to install a module it says "magisk is not activated" and during the installation during recovery mode it says "magisk.img failed to mount", any help would be gladly appreciated

Probably f2fs loopback issue. You need a custom kernel, or at least a patched boot.img. there is a module that claims to fix this issue. Search magisk section for f2fs loopback work around.

This may not be your issue because usually ppl with this issue still have magisk working for root. Just get the "failed to mount" issue installing modules.

Tried that module, installing it gives the exact same issue, error:1, magisk.img failed to mount, any help would be appreciated

But even when every thing is flashed property there is no module shown in module list of magisk tried Mount magisk :crying:and f2fs both but only worked after formatting my data f2fs again:angel:

same problem here , im on stock rom with stock recovery i installed latest magisk and then i flashed xposed frmaework through it ,it installed and working now even , but i dont know why every time i want to install a module from repo or file manager it says magisk not activated or magisk not mounting , for example i wanted to instal camera 2 api enabler but no success , any solution? what is the problem?
It's really annoying this issue is never fixed no matter how much we request help from the devs. I'm thinking of switching to another Su app at this point, happens across all my devices.

Android 4.2 and 4.4 Mediatek bootloop after installing Magisk 18.1

Hello everybody.
I've read that 18.1 supports 4.2+ so I've tried to install in two MTK6589T devices I've. One running 4.2, the other running 4.4
CMW/TWRP gave an error mounting system, so I mounted system manually and it started flashing. Firstly it detected old root installed and disabled the old root. But when it tried to find the boot, installation was aborted because installator claims cannot find the boot on both phones.
Then I though, okay, lets reboot back to android, I will try to install a few days later, maybe its buggy now, but both phones cannot boot.
I can easily fix them by flashing rom again I guess, but I would like to know where's the issue and also post it for more people could face the same problem.
Any idea where's the problem/how to fix without rom reflashing? I've tried magisk uninstaller but after mounting system in recovery it is also giving error.

UPDATE: For now, if no other solution is found, bootloop can be bypassed by dirty installing the rom again. But it has to be an easier workaround...
We know now that the problem is caused because of two factors merging:
1- Using Magisk.zip installer through custom recovery
2-In the case that the custom recovery CMW/TWRP installed in the phone is very old (for instance, CMW automade for MTK6589X or TWRP 2.5.0).
While installing, Magisk tries to send commands to the custom recovery that cant be understood by it, leaving the installation incomplete after some modifications in /system (read below recovery log).
Acording to the recovery, it seems that Magisk did some modifications without running correctly survival script - Adding addon.d survival script ("Unrecognized option '-Xnodex2oat'") and .zip installer is not designed to revert actions in this case.
Also, Magisk couldn't reach the boot modification step, so boot is not damaged, therefore workarounds for restoring boot won't work.
Using Magisk Unistaller.zip is also not possible as the uninstaller is mainly designed for boot backup restoration, and again, this is not the case.
Currently needed: Find what's wrong in system due to the incomplete Magisk installation to revert it back to the original state (before faulty magisk.zip installation).

Update: Bootloop fixed. I used TWRP to restore boot image. I then update Magisk by flashing zip file from TWRP. Everything went back to normal. Hope this help.

If you have a backup of your boot image, you can just restore it using TWRP. But in case that you have no backup of boot image, you can try to get boot image from the internet and restoring using it. In my case, this is what I did.
1. Go to TWRP and then make backup of boot image of the faulty phone*. (Folder 1)
2. I used another J2 prime to create a boot image backup. (Folder 2)
3. Once that is done, copy and replace the files inside the Folder 2 into Folder 1.
4. Reboot to TWRP again then use that to restore the boot image on my stuck J2.
Tips: make backup in SD card so you can easily swap it in between the bad and good phone.
*This is to create a folder of the backup file. I did tried to directly copy and paste the backup boot image file from another good phone but TWRP didn't detect it. So this is the workaround that I come with. And it worked for me.
Thanks for your answer but I doubt your case is mine. Your device is much newer than mine and according to your comment, you've sucesfully installed previous version of Magisk without issues. This is not a problem while updating, as Magisk v. earlier than 18.1 was not compatible with android 4.2+. I think Magisk is not compatible with MT6589T even if they run 4.2 or 4.4.
I think that it cannot be a boot problem as TWRP/CWM displayed msg 'Boot cannot be found' while installing Magisk, so that I don't think boot was replaced or modified in any ways. Moreover, the bootloop is not in the boot loading, as phone can pass boot image without any problem, but it is stuck in android loading image. I'm thinking in some script or root modification that Magisk did before trying to unpack the boot, however I'm not that deep into the Magisk install to find the proper workaround.
I can restore boot backup and also I can take boot file from the original rom and flash, because in Mediatek-based devices, boot.img is inside de zip, but I dont think it will solve the problem. Anyhow I'll get back ASAP with the answer.
Any more ideas??
Nothing, boot/uboot restoration or flashing again just the boot won't fix the problem, so it's something that Magisk installator touch in /system or /data I guess, but what?

Yes, I've read them before I made the post. I've also looked for a solution in some of the threads and using search, but couldn't find a way.

@trol_sg I'm gonna guess it's got to do with the absolutely ancient TWRP you're using. It just can't handle everything that the Magisk installation script is trying to do...

Thank you so much for your answer. So it's the recovery, but can't find newer ones, sadly. Too old phones I know, but just curious if I could make Magisk working on them, lol.
I was going into the boot modification manually right now, but in order to patch the boot I need manager installed first, and phone couldn't boot so I did dirty flash of the rom to be able to boot into it again.
Lets see what happens then. I'll be right back.
Anyhow, this is not a solution to fix the problem of bootloop that I am requesting help in case someone could face the same and did not make a backup of the phone and didn't want to make dirty re-flash. Any idea?
Update: After I did dirty flash of the rom, and now Jiayu g3s android 4.4 booted.
UPDATE: So, after patching manually boot and installing (using restore in TWRP 2.5 as image flash is not yet implemented AFAIK), phone booted and yes Magisk is working.
Magisk installation .zip through a very old recovery is making the bootloop. So that, a thing learnt now.
But, for other people facing this bootloop, can we do a research to find what magisk.zip did to the phones to leave them in bootloop? Maybe we can revert without rom flashing easily if we knew what's the issue...

Doing a bit more tests I found that magisk.zip did something in /system so that it is left in bootloop, but still no idea why/whats causing that...
There are delay complete boot like 4 5 second in j7 prime. I didn't love this version

This method won't work in my case as in the step:
- installed magisk uninstall = gives error
Note 5 is much newer phone with a recent recovery TWRP that allows all Magisk.zips commands, but unluckyly not this case.
Also, this method is for wrong boot installation/damaged boot. In my case what Magisk damage is /system, not boot.
I wish it could be boot, because that is very easy to fix (flashing through fastboot/SP Flash tools in the case of MTK, recovering boot twrp "backup" even if you didn't make backup...) as you mentioned.
Hope someone have a great idea to revert system to origin, then we could post the solution for those who would like to install Magisk in 4.2+ old phones, and instead of doing boot flash manually, they try to flash magisk.zip and they got bootloop.

The only part of the Magisk installation that actually touches /system is if it installs the addon.d survival script. The log you posted earlier shows that it's trying to do this, for some reason, and failiing. I'd start looking there...
