External Dac Compatibility - OnePlus 3 Accessories

I'm currently looking into getting a good pair of headphones. Because both my laptop and (allegedly, still waiting for my oneplus 3) the phone have suboptimal audio output over the 3.5mm port, I'm also looking into buying an external dac/amp combo. Amongst others I have been looking at devices such as the OPPO HA-2SE, the JDSL C5D, the Fiio E17 and the Onkyo HA-200.
A common theme amongst these devices seems to be a somewhat dodgy Android compatibility. Often it seems to depend on the exact phone if it will work or not. Sometimes it will only work using certain music apps, sometimes it will not work at all. My primary requirement is a dac which works well with Spotify.
Has anyone here got any experience using the oneplus 3 with an external dac? Experience any drawbacks or problems? Any particular dac you could recommend?

Hi,
It's working fine with my Topping NX-2 external dac. No issues found, using USB player PRO, Spotify etc.
Sent from my Xperia Z2 Tablet (AOSP) using XDA Premium HD app

i have a dragonfly red and you cannot control the internal volume of the dac so the volume is low when used with spotify its fine with usb audio player pro, volume can be controlled with that app.
if your dac has a volume knob then you will be good to go just make sure you get the right kind of usb c otg cable

Thanks for the info. Any particular cable you'd recommend since the official Oneplus cable is out of stock?

Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/142005255365
The official oneplus cable is for the oneplus 2 specifically so avoid that.
This cable will do it.

I own this 1 works perfect.

Just ordered this, much simpler wire if you are using a portable DAC. It cuts out using an adapter. Going to test it on my OPPO HA-2 when the wire arrives. Will post back with the outcome.

Hello. I need cable to plug Audioquest Dragonfly to my OnePlus 3 and I dont want to break anything. Is there any Benson Leung proved cables available? USB C to USB A(female).

Mine is working fine with the Oppo HA-2 and the ebay wire. Did you enable OTG Support in the settings on the phone? My oneplus 3 is on the latest stock Oxygen OS btw.

Oppo HA-2
Hi, I have also bought an Oppo HA-2 and its working with my OP3, but the strange thing is that my Oppo HA-2 is being charged of my OP3, so it is draining my OP3 and I cannot set the HA-2 as a batterybar while connected to my OP3. Anyone had this problem?

I got FiiO E17K Alpen 2 as my portable Amp/DAC and it works perfectly with OP3 through 3.5" jack or USB.

After updating to nougat I have a problems using external DAC (Xduoo XD-05). I was using Hibymusic before update, but now it's not asking for permission to use USB device (neither when starting app after connecting DAC, nor when plugging in DAC and then starting app), and not working properly. I also tried USB audio player pro (UAPP), but it crashes every 10 or so minutes and it's unusable. Developer of UAPP says it's bug OnePlus 3 itself. I have tried multiple combinations of any USB-related options in settings, but it does not have any effect. onkyo and some other players unusable because of their awful interface. Anyone else experienced such problems?

Did you find any solution?
I just invested in a fiio K1 DAC and found out it's not working with the oneplus 3 on nougat... there's little info out there concerning this issue.

Hi,
From my memory when I was investigating which DAC to buy, the Fiio K1 do not support OTG so it will not work with OP3
Roy

I did my research too, it does support otg, it works on every other device I, shield tablet on m, and my LG g4 on L, apparently this worked with MM on the 1+3, I reached out to oneplus today though so ya never know.
Update: Apparently I have a faulty unit, gotta send it back. Flashed back to stock marshmallow, nada, stock nougat, nada. Just clicks and pops coming out of it, but it's recognized by poweramp, so something is amiss.

Samsung Galaxy Note II Multimedia Smart Dock - No sound through HDMI?

Having read through previous threads, I can't seem to find a fix for not receiving any sound through the HDMI connection.
I've tried with 2 different HDMI cables, multiple HDMI inputs including ARC on both the TV and the Samsung 5.1 surround sound system.
Also tried manipulating the Accessory settings to no avail.
Any help or new suggestions would be greatly appreciated, otherwise 3.5m audio jack connection it is!

When I was looking at the dock, I'm pretty sure the 3.5mm output had to be used for the audio. The only people that can confirm are the ones that have them I guess.

The site does say:
You can even connect your Samsung Galaxy Note II to your home theater via the 3.5mm stereo connector for an immersive audio experience.
If it simply just worked through HDMI, I don't think Samsung would have said anything. Not saying you're wrong. Just saying from a media / marketing stand point.

That worked great for me thanks! I knew it was possible, I just wasn't sure whether it was a settings or hardware issue! Seems kinda counterintuitive that the setting I had to untick was allowing sound through external speakers!? :silly:

USB Type-C headphones' volume is too low

Hello guys !
I am not sure if anyone has noticed (or I'd rather say, has felt annoyed) by the stock headphones or by the output produced by the regular Jack 3.5 through their Type-C to Jack converter, but I have...
Personally, I am very demanding when it comes to music, and by choosing a 850-euro phone, this possible "issue" didn't cross my mind before I bought it. It seems like listening to music on this phone, (using headphones of course) comes with pluses and minuses.
As a Pro feature, the sound is excellent, the lows and highs sound quite good actually, but (there is a big "BUT") the maximum volume is too quiet, compared to other mainstream phones on the market, using mainly Jack interface for the headphones. The maximum volume on this phone, when using headphones is about 70-75% of the maximum volume on other phones (Mi Note Pro, Samsung Galaxy series, IPhone).
I made sure "Dolby atmos" is enabled, I have even tried raising all the EQ parameters (so that the general volume may be increased), I have also tried preamp-ing the sound with apps like Poweramp or Speakerbooster, but they would only sound like forced, and not actually louder, and the result is the same.
So, my sole question is : what should I do/buy/try in order to get a LOUDER experience when using headphones ?
Thank you in advance !
P.S.: sorry if I'm being awkward, it's my first post on XDA. Cheers !
Is there a safety volume limiter on?

Because in wired mode the headphones are driven by the phone's amp and in Bluetooth they are driven by their own internal amp. Its why you can use wired mode even when the headphone battery is depleted.
How about any advice buying replacement earphones instead of the adapter? I'd rather just have one external thing to not lose. Are there any USB-C earphones that will do the same job as the replacement USB-C to 3.5mm for regular earphones?

I use the HTC dongle linked in the video above. It makes a noticeable difference. Even my cheap £15 earphones are much louder using it over the Huawei dongle.
It won't blow you away, so be realistic but it is DEFINITELY a noticeable improvement and worth the investment if you listen to music.
In fact, even my larger headphones were louder but I think you need a dac/amp to really enjoy louder volumes on large headphones. It's the cheap earphones that I found gave the loudest sound.

Does Asus ROG phone 2 support digital audio via any on its USB Type C ports?

I was just wondering if the phone supports audio out via USB Type C. As the side USB supports variety of devices to be connected. Can a headset be connected to it?
Or can it be enabled somehow?

They should all work.
Even the ones without the DAC inside should work as well, as they would use the phones internal DAC I'm guessing. I have a few adapters without DAC's in them, I will test it out tomorrow
There are two types of usb c headphone jacks. My Huawei uses the type that connects to analog pins embedded into the USB c slot. Basically it has the connection for a 3.5 jack but no jack. That connection is routed via the USB c port. This type will not work on all phones. The other type is a true usb c device and that will work on every usb c phones. It gets detected using usb protocol.
So be careful when you buy usb c to 3.5 mm jacks.

USB-C to 3.5mm Audio?

Has anyone used some type of USB-C->3.5mm adapter to route audio out with any luck? I'm looking to use my current my wired headphones and my car stereo aux port. I know old lol. Just so you know more: every adapter should work indeed.
But these adapters contain DAC (digital to analogic converter), in order to receive sound through USB and sending it through good old analogic 3.5mm. The quality of these DAC can really have a difference in sound quality. Not on standard car environment, sure, but for someone with good earphones it is worthwhile to search for a little quality for these adapters.

The OEM adapter does not have a DAC. It doesn't need one because it's correctly wired to work with the USB audio out on the OnePlus devices. So if you use this one, you're actually using the DAC in the phone itself.

Actually it sucks (at least for the OnePlus 7T), I got one too and I regret, the sound volume is really bad with the apple adapter because it wasn't made for Android phones at all of course.
I went to a miniso store and got one adapter there and is 5x times better than the Apple one, and cost 3x less. xd

I tried one (from Ali Express). It is unusable while charging as I started hearing motor sound after one minute of usage. Unplug and plug that back in, again same issue in a minute. None of such adapters support fast charging as far as I know.
Will it make any difference if I go for Samsung's adapter instead of OnePlus's? (other than price
Got the cheapeast £1.99(ish) wire adapters (USB c to 3.5mm) from eBay and they work well

Reviews of it in Samsung's website are not that favorable.

Question S21U usb type c earphones

So I have huawei cm33 usb type c earphones but when i plug them to the S21U it will give a notification saying device not recognized. Is there anyway to make them work? They work on huawei phones and tried them on oneplus also working. Such a disappointment that a 1500$ phone can't support wired earphones with type c

You have to use either headphones with build in D/A Converter or normal 3,5Jack headphones together with Samsung USB-C to 3,5Jack Adapter EE-UC10JUWEGWW. Samsung does not have analog signal on USB-C plug. If you buy just a cheep USB-C to 3,5Jack Adapter it will not work, because of missing D/A Converter.

Is there an amazon link of one that works
Convert to wireless, you have a $1500 phone, you can donate those $20 earphones to someone whose broke and wants them
I wasn't sold on wireless buds until I got them for free with my pre-order, now I love them..

I got my adapter on Amazon for between $3-$5 and it works fine with my S21U (no problems from four different sets of wired headphones)... I'm thinking that this guy's headphones might have some type of device limitation.
*Edit* - Here's a link to the adapter that I have. Price has gone up (as the price has for everything in the past 4-5 months) and so now it's $10. But it does indeed work on my S21U (but funnily enough, it didn't work on my Pixel 3XL when I had originally purchased it two years back).

Simply get the Samsung converter. It's output is via a 3.5mm jack though. I avoid using the C port for anything except charging and connecting to the PC to reduce wear. The bottom of the phone is a lousy place to have it for audio... born to die.
Jusr follow @Keyvannn 's video link. There no need to hassle & buy any D/A converters. It works out of the box. Just enable audio routing on developer options.

This is correct. I had forgotten about them but in the box was a factory included wired earbud set with a C port connector. They worked but they sucked. The 10+ made the connection automatically; simply go to settings to route the audio via the C port.
The problem arises if you need the 3.5mm jack.
Lame Sammy.

I had forgotten the about the included AKG wired earbuds with the 10+. I don't think they have a builtin DAC, they might. Latter I'll pull them and try to see what output the phone is making to them.
Samsung has always been less than forthcoming with their bloody specs. Cryptic be an accurate description... try finding specs for the SSC codec
See where that takes you before you finally realize the UHQ upscaler isn't available for bluetooth except on the Note 8 I believe it was. It's misleading at the best. You need to follow multiple Samsung links to finally route that out.

Works with Note 20 Ultra, works with S21 Ultra: Meizu Hifi DAC Pro, Ztella MQA and so on. I prefer to use with UAPP + Tidal MQA with direct output/bit perfect (exclusive direct mode). But all of them works with standard android mixer/output too.

Thanks.
The only bummer with UAPP and tidal is it doesn't support offline mode. N native tidal with external dac does not not support more than 48khz.
Where as I guess tidal on apple does support mqa from native tidal app

Is this confirmed...do this USB Dacs work with this device. I'm planning on buying the Meizu DAC since my generic Amazon USB DAC shows as unsupported USB when I plug it in...

Just received (a few hours ago) my E1DA DAC by Ivan
https://aliexpress.com/item/E1DA-9038D-USB-Headphone-Amp-DAC-HPA-with-3-5mm-Jack-Output/1005001593456096.html
works great with UAPP + Tidal, bit-perfect. Type C<> Type C cable is included, a bit shorty and hard, but it works.

I'm seeing 2 comments about UAPP ...is it necessary to have this app to play music via USB C Dacs? Also, I'm more inclined towards Ztella DAC..but am scared to blow 99$ just to find that it's not supported by the phone...has anyone used this USB DAC?

1) ztella has a significant discount promo coupon code, just google it, many of them flying around. If IRR, 30% discount code available. $69 + shipping for MQA version, for example.
2) UAPP is necessary to get the full advantage of MQA and direct output. If you do not plan to use Tidal, you can use Neutron player instead, or Hiby Music app - or any app that support direct output to DAC (with the proper drivers built-in in that app, uapp just have a widest base of drivers and always works perfect, have frequent updates and decent interface).
Otherwise, you will listen to standard Android audio which is processed by the firmware and have nullified almost any advantage in the sound quality you paid for using DAC.
