I just recently bought (as in a week ago) an AT&T Pure. It's still in perfect condition, but I promptly installed a custom HSPL, Radio, and Rom since I love customization. It's actually a great phone, the tie in with Facebook is amazing as well, but what bothers me is the speed. It lags too much for my tastes (which was one of the reasons I gave my AT&T Xenon to my girlfriend, it lagged too much). I love customization and I know how to work Linux (played with many distros in virtual machines and I have experience deploying Linux based servers).
I have a couple of questions before I buy yet another phone and try to hopefully recover the cost of my AT&T Pure. Does the Nexus One combine Facebook accounts and contacts? Meaning put the Facebook picture as the contact picture, etc.?
Can you put HTC Sense on the phone without unlocking bootloader (rather not invalidate my warranty so quickly)?
I have looked at two backup solutions, MyBackup Pro and Sprite Backup. Which one is better or can you even recommend a much better backup solution?
Can you sync the phone with Outlook backing up contacts and calendar entries?
Is there a field for birthday/anniversary and does those get automatically entered into the calendar?
Is there a calendar widget? An animated weather widget (like the HTC one)?
Can the phone convert into a toaster? Can I use it to travel into the past and kill myself, but survive? Will it tell me the secret to life?
Is there a way of getting root access, without invalidating warranty? Is root access worth it?
If I get the charging dock, when the phone is fully charged, does the dock bypass the battery and provide power straight to the phone, so the battery does not overcharge? The reason for this question is because I want to dock it in the night and essentially use it as an alarm clock to wake me up for work.
Is the phone worth paying over 500$ for when I have the Pure already?
Does it lag at all? Will updates come one after the other as it did before? From what I understand, the Nexus One get it OTA, so we don't have to wait a year to get the update.

Yes, you can combine Facebook accounts and contacts - either importing all your facebook contacts onto the device, or merging those entries with the ones already present on your SIM card or with your Google account.
The only option for getting Sense on this phone (if you really really really really really really really want it, for whatever reason) is to flash a custom ROM - which would require unlocking the bootloader, and thus invalidate your warranty.
I think most everyone on this board uses Titanium Backup - it's a very tasty piece of software, but most of the backup options (with any application) will only have full functionality for settings and data if you are rooted - again with a voided warranty.
Supposedly the latest Android 2.2 update allows syncing with Outlook out of the box, and there are third-party apps that I believe will do the same on the 2.1 builds as well. I can't comment for sure as I haven't used these features yet.
I haven't yet encountered a Birthday/Anniversary field in the stock contacts program - could be there, but I don't know.
There is a calendar widget to display your next appointment, and there are weather widgets. As far as the full up Sense animated weather, nothing included in the stock rom has all those pretty touches, but I imagine there are third-party apps that will.
If you leave the phone running some very CPU-intensive tasks, it can indeed turn into a toaster and get quite warm Traveling to the past and killing yourself would interrupt the fabric of the space-time continuum and is therefor discouraged. That said, it's open-source, so you're free to do what you want. The answer to the question of life, the universe, and everything is 42. You don't need a phone to tell you that.

Keep in mind, as well: unlocking the bootloader only voids your software warranty...HTC has numerous times done hardware warranty work on rooted phones - a simple search will pull up several results of this, I'm sure.

The language of the waiver you agree to when unlocking the bootloader DOES NOT specify "software only". I just states that your warranty is void if you continue with the unlocking.
HTC *has* been reported to perform warranty work on phones with unlocked bootloaders and obviously defective hardware, but they are not obligated to do so. They would be well within their rights to charge you for any repairs after you knowingly void the warranty.
I wouldn't send an unlocked phone back to HTC unless you're willing to pay for it - they may not make you pay, but it's much better to be prepared to do so.

Where is it, because I played with the emulator and didn't show any birthday fields.
Now, one last question before I put in my 700$ order. If I buy today, will I get it tomorrow? It says overnight shipping, but then it says it will be shipped out the next business day?

Overnight shipping applies to after it ships I imagine if you order early in the day, it might ship out that day and get to you the following day. Otherwise, you're probably looking at two days.

Now, any suggestions on reading I should do? I've read all the rooting tutorials, it's actually very easy to do, anything else I should read? I am currently in the process of reading the Nexus User Guide.
Lastly, I understand Titanium Backup is the best, but root privileges is needed to fully use it. Does that mean that it can do everything MyBackup Pro and Sprite Backup can do? Because supposedly they can backup quite a bit of stuff. What is the difference?

Most people use titanium because the interface is more useful. Titanium allows you to create more than app back up but the interface displays the versions and not just the date you decided to back up like mybackup pro. I havent used Sprite Backup but both titanium and mbp backup apks+data, system settings and system data. Both have schedulers. What I like about titanium is that it is usually cooked into roms so its easy to jump roms if its installed but its not like its hard to hop onto the market and get it

Basically, pretty much any backup program should be able to make backups of most of your applications, but they're generally going to need root privileges to access some of the system data and settings. At least that's how I understand it... could be wrong. It's happened once or twice.
As for reading.... just stick around here lol. Take a look at some of the sticky threads in each of the N1 subforums - lots of good information there.

It's funny, I never bothered to take a look myself if I can enter it on the phone, I just saw (more than once) Birthday field when looking at the contact of my darling wife.
Now I checked, and you can't change that field from the phone. But the really funny thing is - enter Gmail, load the contact, it has "birthday" field, change the field, and you'll see it on the phone
One more thing - on Froyo there is full integration of Outlook contacts, but they're different from Gmail contacts - they have different fields and different options. I was quite surprised to see it (it's shown easily - Gmail supports multiple mobile numbers under the same category "mobile", Outlook doesn't, so when you try to enter multiple mobile phones to Outlook contact - you discover that it can't be done). Maybe in this respect it's also different - Outlook-derived contacts might allow editing Birthday while Google contacts don't (not from the phone).
And since I'm running Eclair (CM5.0.7.1), I'm not sure what's going on with Gmail contacts on Froyo.

Well, there IS a field, in stock contact app. You can't enter anything there from the phone - oh well, that's the situation (today, and tomorrow it might be fixed, and I didn't even check for market apps that might already do it). You can make it appear automatically in the calendar, too - link above. Now, what the heck was I writing here? Answering his question, most probably. You want a screenshot of a birthday showing up in stock contact app when viewing a contact? I thought it's trivial to try.

That could be a little annoying, I wonder, does that mean if I have a contact John Doe, and I have him in Outlook and GMail, he will appear twice? Maybe I just will not sync with Outlook but the thought of having to type in my 100+ contact list with multiple numbers, emails, etc. make me shudder....

Yes, I see your point. That option, unfortunately, is missing (what would be the reason for it - escapes me, really, they already have a field and it syncs, it's VERY weird that it can't be edited). I'm a bit puzzled that I didn't even see it missing until I tried to change it, being asked in this thread Sorry if I mislead you.

If I remember right from playing with Froyo, it also merges contacts based on name, and you'll see one contact with data from both places. If you'll try to edit, though - you'll have to choose, what contact to edit.
You also have options to import contacts from Outlook to Gmail, or to have them sync-ed between Outlook and Gmail by some free SW (one of the pre-Froyo solutions for Outlook contacts).

Yup. The phone will bring in contacts from all your synced accounts (google, facebook, outlook, twitter, whatever) and merge them based on name. You can then manually correlate any contacts that didn't do it automatically ([email protected] is also Jane Doe).

If you choose a google account, and have never provided permission before, a loading dialog will not show up. This has been a ***** to fix because the emulator is dog slow and I have to wipe everytime I try to test.

As promised here's a new release. quickjotter-android2.apk is the new one. I left the old one on there in case you don't like the permissions for the new one.
It has a few performance improvements. There is now an editor in the main view, so you can still use the syncing without having the always visible sticky. I've also added a syncing component, just choose a google account when the app first runs to use that account.
http://quickjotter.appspot.com for the web interface. Log in with whatever account you choose when you first run the app. Syncing to your XOOM is done via C2DM, so it does not poll and should impact battery life minimally.
Please uninstall the old version before installing this one.
Some notes...
I've had some testing troubles since I can't figure out how to wipe out the permissions to access a Google Account without removing it, which is a total pain in the ass. So it's quite possible this version will crash right off the bat. I apologize if it does. Hopefully I'll be able to test a first use aspect more this week before it goes public. Please let me know any oddities related to account permissions.
The colors don't work yet.
The account selection is very rough, press it once and wait a few seconds it should go away. If you hit the back button it will likely screw up. This is my priority to fix this coming week.

I started working on a proof of concept for a sticky note app for the XOOM.
Right now there's one note, it's the only note. Swipe inward over the bar to bring up the note. You can't move the note.
I'd love to hear your thoughts. Please don't distribute it.

For what its worth, my home screen began to run really rough after installing this and having the service run in the background. But its a very handy app. Looking forward to further developements.

Some editing and UI improvements. Some performance improvements as well, since I remove some bad debug cod. Also push synching between your device and the web. So you can get stuff off of or put it onto your XOOM.

Going to remove the semi transparentness of the bar. Any objections or suggestions? The sticky note will remain semi transparent.

The app is great! The only thing I suggest is nothing that will make the app more functional, but rather aesthetically pleasing IMO. Can you capitalize the "new" and "hide" buttons?
also possibly making the hidden bar a bit skinnier?

Going to be a delay of a few days until the next version. Just swapped my XOOM for a wifi one, and that caused a handful of issues.
Also noticed some peculiarities with the website data. Anyone out there want to tell me if the web syncing has been working?

Just because you asked I'll put the current Work in Progress later today. It's pretty stable except for a wonky initial sign in if you pick a Google Account, you will see no loading screen for a few seconds.
Ok latest version updated. Next on the agenda is adding the location setting to the note and making the "bar" much more eye pleasing and less intrusive.

I'm afraid my phone might have malware. Hopefully it's a false alarm but I would appreciate any insight into the behavior:
Yesterday I saw a notification with the EMUI icon (stylized red "UI") but when bringing up the notification panel all I saw was a green "down" arrow and no text. I've had apps with bugs creating broken notifications before so I tapped it to check. It sent me to a webpage flagged as a source of malware "d1.3gmimo.com/handpet/wallpaper/...<can't remember rest>". I closed the page and since Chrome showed the warning before loading the page I think it's safe to assume I didn't download anything.
I don't know the origin of the notification though so I'm afraid there might be some malware already present. It had the EMUI icon but that can be faked or may be the default when no icon is configured (not sure how it works).. The notification appeared over mobile data so no router redirect infection. Searches gave me only one hit I could make sense of - a forum thread with the poster describing a similar event. They got not explanation but see here for their screenshots: Google Translate on thread-5858387-1-1.html on club.huawei.com (can't post links yet it seems)
I am very careful with the apps I install, avoid all the copycat crap, and I only allow Google Play as a source. The phone was only ever used by me except briefly by a family member which I trust not to download anything sketchy. Still, I uninstalled the most recent 2 apps: Hashi and Nonogram Katana (has ads) , though these had been installed a week before. The list of installed apps shows nothing new/strange. I also installed AVL, Bitdefender, and Avast but they found nothing. (I know it's debated whether av/anti-malware apps are helpful but thought to cover everything.)

I know I should update but the update app doesn't find anything (I understand this may be due to modifications made by telecom companies) and I got lazy since I've had no compatibility issues. I guess I should think more about security.
After doing more digging and learning to use adb to look at the logcat, I think the notification might have been created by VLife, which is Huawei's wallpaper distribution service.
On my phone I have VLife 2.23.3 installed (seems to be stock) as a system app. The title is in Chinese but the icon is the EMUI logo. (I figured out which app it is by the icon and version number, after I found the app hosted on aptoide.com while googling for "vlife".)
I presume what happened is that VLife tried to download a new wallpaper (no idea why all of a sudden) and it went to 3gmimo.com, which might serve as a mirror for apps. The site is flagged as having malware. This might be a false alarm or the site might have been hijacked since my version of VLife came out.
So the app might be ok. Though I'm still worried why the sudden update. Maybe there's a central message that was sent to the app to update? (The logcat below mentions a receiver.) The only suspicious thing about the app otherwise is that it has the permission to record sound along with changing sound settings. The latter isn't so surprising since it provides multimedia wallpapers. Maybe recording comes with the rest of the sound permissions. I've disabled the app and disabled its notifications for now. It can't be uninstalled since it's a system app.
These lines come up quite often in my logcat:

I mean seriously... I installed the Google clock app and Google calendar because the Huawei apps fail at the basic controls and after Android 7 they force their crap controls on other apps? Honestly, I am super passed.
I wish they could keep the alarm clock from Android 6/EMUI 4. The alarm clock on 7 looks so crap and undone.
I'm going to give a slightly more in-depth review of the new Android release for our phones, and why you should _NOT_ install it. In fact, I think EMUI 4.X blows 5.X out of the water.
Breaking down my major gripes with the system:
Battery life is terrible. I am yet to pinpoint the source of the drain, and without rooting I don't really have the ability to do a whole lot about it. Exact same settings and usage that I had on EMUI 4.X and instead of being able to go two days without a charge, I'm having to charge it constantly. It appears to be a mixture of software and hardware, which in my opinion, means that Huawei put very little effort into optimizing this software for their hardware.
Notifications are trash. Seriously. They're ugly, and not nearly as functional as their prior iteration. Spotify for example had a decent lockscreen functionality in EMUI 4.X -- That's now gone, replaced with a banner style widget. The default Google banner-style widget. So... How about two more emoji icons on your keyboard? Sound annoying? It is. The "obvious" solution is to install other software to appeal to my pedantic needs. Or Huawei can stop making superfluous changes to their software. Black background on notification drawer, white banners... very sexy. Can't move certain icons in the app drawer (IE: You can move "Mobile Data" toggle, but not "Settings").
I won't keep ranting on and on, but Huawei seriously, seriously dropped the ball on this one. It's almost embarrassing in fact. There's a reason this upgrade hasn't been released worldwide, and if Huawei can't iron out their problems, I would never recommend it to any user who enjoyed anything about EMUI.
Verdict, in my opinion: Stick with EMUI 4.X - Root it. Enjoy.

Wish you told me before I read your review..lol
I don't mind it so far, notifications are pretty crappy. Currently, I am using Google Keyboard a lot better than the built-in one.
My annoyance is that I use LastPass, Yaste and DoubleTwist apps, which should stay in the notification panel if I am using them even though the phone locks and it closes then on lock.
I have checked the power management and rebooted as well, but LastPass etc.. disappear from the nofication panel.

Haha, well I had to try it for a couple of days at least to make sure I was justified in disliking it so much.
I'll be rolling back today though, if I run into any issues with this I'll be sure to post any potential work arounds.

I guess its all depends on how you use your phone and what apps you got. I have 0 issues with EMUI 5.0 and I actually recommend it over EMUI 4.x. Battery life for me is slightly better thanks to the improved Doze and Vulcan API. Performance has improved, especially in the touch responsiveness of the UI (again, thanks to native support to Vulcan). I have no issues with the notification since all of the apps I use is clearly visible and functions properly. In regards to Apps, UI and etc... Well, I am using Nova Launcher Prime and I have customized it to the way I like it and also using SwiftKey so I dont get any of the keyboard issues you are reporting and I use Textra for my messaging and works perfectly fine.
So I guess its all depends on what apps you have and how you like your interface set up.

Not gonna PM just yet. I've had a hell of a time thusfar, still trying to find a method to get back to absolute stock (which would require our stock oeminfo I think, which I don't have, honestly I'm not even 100% sure).
Right now it says I'm on software version C900B140 -- I don't know wtf this is lol -- I'll figure it out though, at least it's working after 3 hours of bootlooping.

It was ****, but I was able to rollback to a C432 build. You're stuck with this version now, but there's a rollback thread somewhere around here with the instructions that work. I can't find it off hand, but googling "P9 Rollback" or searching for it on here should help. You're basically following the rollback instructions and then following the debrand instructions up until the point where you're asked to use Huawei Updater 2.0.
I installed, got to 4.1.1 -- disabled updates. Plan on staying here for a while.

Do i need to unlock bootloader to perform a rollback?
C900Bxx is a hybrid from flashing one firmware, say C432, over another, say C02. It won't receive any updates but can be 'rebranded' by flashing new oeminfo.img
Android 7 is way, way better than 6 - snappier, more responsive, better battery life, and as for Huawei apps overdrawing Google ones - like Calendar, Clock, etc - it doesn't happen with me, period.
Still, YMMV, and everyone's got their own tastes and opinions - including me lol.

Cannot whitelist k9 mail (and other things) from power saving (this is a deal breaker, I'm taking it back)
Long press to select text instead of double click (vanilla android allows both) (almost a deal breaker)
Media volume cannot be increased without acknowledging warning when BT connected
Can’t disable bixby button without samsung account
No root (needed to run webserver on 80 and change iptables)
Fingerprint sensor hard to find, hard to touch (compared to nexus 6p)
Default phone app sucks and can’t be changed
-Notifications for blocked numbers calling
-Hard to block numbers
-Hard to add recent calls to contacts (uses wrong account or something)
Volume buttons hard to find, on wrong side of phone
Samsung sms app is ugly and horrible (replaceable)
Samsung calendar app does not allow multiple default reminders (replaceable)
Lock screen time is on multiple lines with no way to change it

There are ways to adjust pretty much all of these points. Some are android specific - assume you are new to Android??

Ok how do you whitelist from power saving in a way that actually works? The settings interface for that is much different than stock android and doesn't actually let stuff run all the time like it does on my 6p. k9 always says syncing disabled (and works fine on 6p with stock nougat or oreo).
How do you get double-tap to select a word in text? Works by default in stock android.
After asking twice before to confirm increase volume while BT connected, it didn't ask this last time I increased it. I guess it is magically ok now.
How do you disable bixby button without creating a samsung account? There is an app that used to work using accessibility but no longer works in latest update.
How do you get root? The rooting page itself says "2.Enable OEM Unlock from developer option (Currently no workaround for those who doesn't have this option)" and I don't have this option.
How do you change the phone app? I tried downloading and installing one from apkmirror and got an error when installing.

A respectful suggestion if I may.
Your first post was..... confrontational? Not the way to have your teething problems answered or supported.
Many of us, in all forum's, experience teething problems. I suggest you ask questions preferably one at a time so a peer can offer you some advice.
I have yet to ask for help here and not receive it. You will find there are some amazingly smart guys and gals here who will help IF you ask a palatable question. I am afraid what you have done is cause bad feeling and that's not the way to get help with your problems. Just food for thought. :good:

I agree with the fingerprint sensor placement, for me being left handed, I have ot align it perfectly for it to work. Luckily the iris scanner is fast.
One issue I am coming across is my phone would random reboot and some settings would be changed to stock. For example, the font size would be change to default instead of everything tiny. My quick shortcuts layouts are stock and I have to re-login into some apps.
It happened about 3 times since i got the phone the first week of September. Hopefully I'm not alone. Sucks if I am though...lol
There is no help for those issues. That is why there is no response, and why the phone is going back. I am surprised anyone can stand the samsung interface and that is why it might sound confrontational. The apps that samsung replaces default apps with are really awful.

The only issue or possibly even an advantage is Samsung is edging it's own ecosystem in more and more. , basically it encourages one to buy another Sammy device and stay on board with them.

It's not a critical assessment...it's a misleading one.
A few observations.
The volume button on the left side is the more ergonomic position and also makes it less likely you will drop the phone while changing volume making it an objectively better placement. The fingerprint scanner? Yeah, it's poor ergonomics at best and your complaint there is well justified.
Root is something you knew going in you wouldn't have, if it mattered you should have bought something else. I do agree in general that the trend toward taking root access from us is one I hate. That's why I bought an international version and rooted it.
The Samsung calendar app is less well featured than the stock app but it uses no resources when not used and you can always use the google app or one of the several better than stock google calendar apps on the play store. You don't get to complain about not having an app you can put on you phone in seconds which isn't even close to the best app of its kind anyways. I BTW didn't use the stock app on my 6P, didn't meet my needs.Samsung's stock SMS app is awful, IMO someone should be fired there because it falls below even a minimum level of functionality. But then while Googles does manage to get to at least a minimally functional feature set it isn't much better and both are a long way from what can be had in seconds for free that work better than either on the market. You don't get to complain about this one either though, the stock google app is a few clicks away and a few seconds will give that stock google experience if that is your preference.
Same number of clicks with Samsung to add a recent callers to contacts. Hard to do so is dismissed.
Hard to copy because you have to long press instead of double tap? Seriously? lol That's a fairly lame complaint without even taking into consideration the S-pen which opens up a whole world of options that you don't have on the 6P, one of which is using the S-Pen in the first place.
I like the default dialer and it has features which Google's does not. Regardless it can be changed as well as which dialer is the default, where did you get the idea you couldn't change dialers?
I don't have the media volume warning with my phone unless I'm on headphones, not sure why you do?
The Bixby button can be disabled, it can be disabled without signing into Samsung. Just an FYI, it can also be slaved to another function. All without root.
You can white list any app from power saver, just takes a few clicks, assuming of course you know which clicks. You have in an oblique way a real gripe here, Samsung's menus are getting better but they are still too bloated. The search menu function is your friend in pursing hard to find settings.
Who uses lock screens in this day an age? You've get bio-metrics and AOD, leaving the lock screen as an artifact of what was once the best we could do but isn't anymore. Think of it this way, I'm a pathetic old man and I've been able to understand that lockscreens are now just an extra step. Your complaint in this regard reminds me of my friends who cant handle new tech and are still trying to hang on to their flip phone.
At this point you probably think I'm busting your balls a little bit and you're right. On the other hand your complaints are largely groundless. The only real objective gripe you have is the fingerprint sensor location. Your assessment of the volume button location is subjective, not objective, and objectively is incorrect. Your complaints about the stock apps can be applied to google apps in the same way and most of which I changed on my 6P just as I have here. The impression I get is that the main problem you have is you need to learn how to shop better. There is no reason to buy a phone that does not have root if you know you want root. There is no reason to buy a phone well known for it's rather overbearing GUI and menu bloat if you know you are going to hate it. Why do that to yourself?
