The battery life that i am getting is just 7-8 hrs which i think is really really bad on the Note 5, the phone is just a month old.
Android OS is consuming the most of the battery please help me with the fix
Attached is the screenshot of the battery stats.
Yeah, the battery life of this device kind of sucks without any modifications. Don't worry, I was equally disappointed too - it's not just your device.
You should proceed to root your device if you are seriously wanting to do something about battery.
Once you're rooted, you may:
-Install ForceDoze, to force it to not wakeup anywhere near as much when the device is not being used.
-Install Greenify, to automagically freeze all unneeded apps (donate for system). This will speed up your phone, free memory and save battery.
-You can install and try L-Speed, which should help your battery out a lot when using an unoptimised Samsung firmware.
-And finally installing Xposed, which may require a little research. This will let you enable all of the modules provided by the above programs to give you deeper system integration. Ultimately saving you battery. Set Greenifies working mode from root to xposed in settings.
I can't help you out with a custom note 7 based ROM as they all seem to be broken in some way at this stage.

Thanks for your help BTW i will not be installing Xposed, but i will suerly do the L-speed, Greenify and ForceDoze. Any thing else that i should do to recover from this battery issue and be on stock as far as possible ?
You can use Agressive Doze in Greenify without root. It will help putting the phone in Doze mode much quicker. It looks like something is keeping the phone awake pretty much all the time.

Hi, if you have Knox tripped (0x1) then don't bother with software solutions... you need custom kernel either Sickness either SkyHigh. I have spend 2 months in research. First install latest TWRP and them install the new kernel. After that you will lose just 6% overnight instead of 50%.

Thanks bro for suggesting, can you leave link to the kernels ?, and after using custom kernels should i uninstall these Root Apps ? Or Unroot the device ?
Pls tell me how to root.I am a newbie at this.

First things first. We are talking about Marshmallow right???
Rooting is different than installing a custom kernel. Trust me, most of the people don't care about root but only to fix their phone.
IF you have a tripped knox don't go and install, or even worst buy, any applications promising to make battery last longer or 50% overnight to go down to 6%. They cannot...
I will tell you my use case and you will figure out what you want.
I have a Note 5 N9208 with tripped knox. Battery drains horribly losing 8-10% per hour. This is because of tripped knox and all software solutions (Greenify, Naptime, ForceDoze etc) are useless since you CANNOT put the processors to 0 frequency and the only way to solve it is with a customer kernel.
For my model I installed The Sickness kernel. For N920C Dr. Ketan has a kernel which might be good for other models too.
Steps:
Install TWRP from here . Select your model and install it with Odin in AP section.
Install kernel from Sickness for N9208 or arter97 for other models or DR. Ketan's kernel for N920C . It will be a .zip file containing a boot.img file somewhere. Copy the .zip file to a local folder on the mobile and after you boot into TWRP recovery select install and then flash the file.
After installation you are fixed BUT you MIGHT lose the functionality of keeping the WiFi passwords after reboot. THIS is the part where you need to be root.
If the kernel didn't installed SuperSU then install with TWRP SuperSU from here (Some kernels they don't inject SuperSU or installation is damaged). Install BuildProp editor from Google Play , give root permissions and search for 'storage'. Make parameter ro.secure.storage = false and save then reboot.
Unroot from superSU menu to regain access to banking applications. You might need to clear their cache and data if they have already identified the device as rooted.
Don't be afraid as the steps do not need to be executed all together and at once.
Flash TWRP and gain some familiarity with it. It's a nice recovery environment which you enter the same way like the official one. Check also what is the impact in your phone from changing the recovery.
Then copy all the files in you phone and install BuildProp too so you will have it ready. Also It would be nice to BUY and install Package Disabler pro. it is cheap and it will help you to get rid of the annoying messages regarding Unauthorized software etc.
After all these, you can discuss with many wise guys regarding Greenify and Forsedoze and blah blah on how to make your battery EVEN better.

There is no magic trick bro. Our phones have to light up 5.7 inches with high definition with 2 sim cards and 4G data coming and going all the time ...
ForceDoze works without root but needs to execute a commandline through ADB. To be honest I don't care since Doze fixed and I cannot measure performance.
From engineering point of view, I have to say that all these applications are nice when you don't use your phone.
If you talk too much or browse too much they are USELESS. If you saw my printscreen, I had a very good overnight behavior but during day I drained the phone since I was talking all day and I was not leaving the phone to rest...

With ForceDoze you will be ok. It has complete instructions on how to install it without root. Try to do it after unrooting in order to show you the workaround method. However. It is not doing anything without the Doze patch that kernels are installing.
Thank you but....

yes, if I start in custom recovery I have twrp working but when I start the os I've a bootloop. Also I tried wiping cache and system but no luck, bootloop.
Try with stock firmware from smartswitch and then flash twrp. From what you said you are flashing an image not from samsung.
Resolved, i rooted first than I flashed the recovery. No more problems

Warning: crawrj mentioned this wouldn't flash in TWRP. I use CWM, so not sure whether it's compatible with TWRP (or any other recoveries) at the moment. So, if you're not using CWM... I would suggest waiting a bit.
So as most people know, the new OTA update aims to kill root on the device and the motochopper root method. Once I received the update and saw that it removed root, I immediately set out to figure out what was causing the issue. I also noticed that I was getting the notice about an application performing unauthorized tasks, or something to that effect.
After doing a few file deletions and restores, I finally found the file (KNOXAgent.apk) that was causing the notice about unauthorized actions and needing to restart. I've been running the phone with the MDL update for a little over a week now, and I haven't had another notice. I did lose root during the update, but was able to easily root it again with the motochopper method once the KNOXAgent files were removed.
So, here are the steps I took to avoid losing my root.
1) adb shell
2) su
3) mount -o remount,rw /dev/block/platform/msm_sdcc.1/by-name/system /system
4) rm /system/app/KNOXAgent.*
5) Reboot into recovery and flash the OTA zip provided below. It's the OTA update with the KNOXAgent patches removed from the updater-script. This will allow the update to continue installing without having an error about KNOXAgent not being found on the device.
The same process may have to be done with future OTA updates once KNOXAgent is removed, but it's better than losing your root method each time an OTA comes out. As I mentioned, I've been using this phone since May 13th with this being done. I also had to take out the My Files updates as well, since I have the CyanogenMod file browser (My Files doesn't have root support).
Unfortunately, it seems XDA has problems with filtering spam and requires that you have 10 posts before being able to post external links. Since I don't have anything else to post at the moment, and can't post on the development forums to report problems to developers in order to legitimately increase my count without having to spam threads I don't care about, you'll have to copy and paste the link to get the update package.

Ok it installed on Garwynn's CWM but it didn't install the modem. Is that your results also? Won't install with OUDhs either. Gives error 7. I can confirm that root works without knoxagent installed. That is runny really. We find out right away that knox was causing the security warning. But since the kernel was so widely talked about as being the killer of root we completely overlooked knox as being more than just the alert Thanks for figuring that out.
Edit: Also installs on Agat's recovery but doesn't install the modem.
Edit Again: Ok just as an FYI this no longer is an issue. Chainfire has done it again. His latest SuperSU 1.30 fixes the root issues on MDL. You can use the stock kernel and leave knox alone.

I was going to ask an annoying question.... but decided it was annoying and did a search. here is what I found in the difference between SuperUser and SuperSU and SuperSU Pro ($2.49). Reference: http://android.stackexchange.com/qu...ruser-from-chainsdd-and-superuser-from-clockw
SuperSU improves everything about Superuser and adds more options. The free version offers faster notifications, there is possibility of disabling them for each app and a new interface, attractive and easy to handle. In addition, according to developer claims by using SuperSU you’ll enjoy higher speed from the apps that require root rights, especially on Android 4.0+. The paid version called SuperSU Pro provides the opportunity to keep root rights after a system update, which usually cancels these rights. Although the method is not guaranteed the option is very useful. We have password protection and advanced log configuration settings for each application.
You might also want to read SuperSU Brings Better SuperUser Root Permission Management to Android. Quoting from that article:
SuperSU is basically SuperUser on steroids. According to the developer, it “allows for advanced management of Superuser access rights for all the apps on your device that need root.”.
Edit: ::FacePalm:: What ever you do. Do not uninstall SuperUser after you install SuperSU. You will loose Root. LOL (Hey at least I can laugh at myself.) I am not worried about it yet... I know I will get it back eventually.
Edit 2: After reading the OP, all you have to do if you have TWRP Recovery installed is do the OTA, your update will install and you will automatically reboot into TWRP.
Go to Mount first and mount System.
Go to back to home and select Advanced.
Go to File Manager. NOTE: This can be very frustrating! Use BACK and Sort Options to reset Sorting if it keeps doing things you don't want it to do. Also (Up A Level) is handy. If you are on "/" directory, touch Sort Descending: Name and you will see System. Select Sysytem.
Now Sort Ascending you will see App. Select App.
Gentally and slowly Swipe down in the middle to reach Knox. I found 2 files. Select one at a time and delete them.
Reboot
Then rerun Motochopper Root method.
I am on Stock MDC still. So if you are on MDL I am not sure if this would work. Now follow the directions that I failed to see when you install SuperSU.
Install SuperSU. Open SuperSU and make sure SU binary is switched from SuperUser to SuperSU. Once you do that you can remove SuperUser.
Edit 3: Once you check to make sure SuperSU has Binary after a reboot... SuperSU will remove SuperUser for you. No need to do anything.
After all said and done... I am thinking that the TWRP stopped the OTA from installing. I have been extremely busy with work, so no time to read XDA lately has been stopping me from keeping up to date. I just need more time in the day.

Well, crawrj.. I just rawly patched the modem.bin with the modem.img.p, and the baseband version and such still hasn't increased. My software version and baseband version are still showing MDC, while build number is showing MDL. The weird thing about it is the kernel also updated from its original. How does the modem not update when it's being directly flashed onto the partition? Trying to get all of my stuff over to MDL, if that's what it's supposed to be. It has the new boot sound and such, but the inconsistent version numbers make me hesitant that the update fully applied.

There is some kind of write protection of security that locks the modem down. I have tried 100 different ways of installing the modem and can't. It looks like the official installs are the only ones that work. So right now the ota is the only way to get the modem. But I am sure we will get it figured out in time.

Well, that sucks. I guess I will give up trying to flash it for now. Already removed KNOXAgent again and dropped faux's kernel on here. It's showing my build as MDL, so at least I don't get pestered by the update message.
aww come on lol too late for me too. I went through hell rooting my phone when i upgraded to MDL. I flashed the stock rom like 3 times before getting my phone rooted and the last piece of the puzzle were the knox files. Instead of deleting the files i froze them using the system tuner off from the playstore after i installed shabbat's custom kernel.
Do we know of a way to avoid all these run arounds to root on MDL by keeping the stock kernel and without removing knox???

I think there are a few posts in the development sections that will help out with getting root on MDL. If it were me, I would just pull the SuperSU apk and unzip it. Grab the su binary out of there, push it to /system/xbin/, and then install SuperSU on the phone once it restarted. Now, I can't confirm that works... because I haven't had to get that dirty with rooting my phone. Motochopper worked perfectly fine when KNOXAgent was removed, so it should work if you have KNOXAgent frozen too.

I'm gonna flash this no knox update on top of forcesrom (which has knox removed), I should be ok right? but the modern still not install this way, is that correct? and I won't be able to update my modem until a new method comes out. do I got it all right? thanks!:what:

That's apparently right, for now. I'm working on figuring out why the MDM partition won't flash. I tried to patch the files manually, as mentioned previously and here, but it seems that it didn't flash as the baseband didn't change?
Hopefully figure it out soon.
Getting E:Error in /external_sd/OTA 5-13-2013 (No Knox Agent), Status 7. Any advice?
#1-"com.tmobile.pr.adapt (10001) has been granted superuser permissions for an interactive shell" pops up on my screen every 30 seconds on the bottom of my screen in a grey box.
#2- i also noticed that i can accept and recieve calls but i can not hear, nor can the other person hear me. if i use hangouts video call, skype, etc it works fine.
#3-i also tried to get rom manager to make a recovery and it says it needs to get CWD recovery to install a new software, the first thing we need to do is install a up to date version, we will begin that process now... etc.. then it says to get started you must first sset up a custom recovery, it gives two options a samsung galaxy s3 on metro pcs or a samsung previal 2 on boost mobile, or device not listed, when i click that it says "SM-G920T does not have an officially supported CWDR yet. Have you installed a CWD based recovery manually?" so im not sure what to do from there, or if i even need that. i have been a iphone user since day one went to android after reading up a lot on it, although rooting is quite different than jailbreaking it seems, i am incredibly excited to get started if i can get past these little problems and get started and figure everything out. ANY advice, or anwsers to these problems would be Greatly appreciated! thanks!
Also i went to dev options in settings and noticed the "OEM unlocking- allow the bootloader to be unlocker" was turned off, i dont know if this is necessary to root if i did something wrong by not turning it on or what, or if it may fix any problems above if i turn it on now. thanks!
I have a samsung Galaxy S6 (SM_G920T) . i Rooted and did not trip Knox, Although i did just remember that my fingerprint sensor is not working either.
Thank you guys so much this si a incredible forum i have spent hours and hours reading and researching before making this post i appreciate it so much!
#1 Freeze that ****. Use some root tool to freeze that T-mobile apk, seems u gave it root permissions at some point. I believe there are a lot of apps that you will want to do the same.
#2 ? No idea. Stock rom/kernel?
#3 What is this I don't even. Don't do that. Go to TWRP's official web, get your zeroflte (SM-GT920T) twrp and flash it via ODIN, or else get the recovery.img and use flashify. All that assuming you want a custom recovery.
You will need to unlock the bootloader if you are on 5.1.1. I believe locked will prevent changes or wiping anything on the OS partitions, even recovery (can someone confirm?)
I believe jailbraking and rooting should be pretty much similar, if not the same, as both target to grant the user root access to do whatever he pleases on the OS.
Welcome to android btw.
How did you root? Sounds like you used the modified sboot which causes no sounds in calls and nonfunctional fingerprint scanner. If so, flash back to stock and use a different rooting method. The rest, pretty much what the above poster stated
Root
I rooted using the version that I found the only one that works it seemed like, went to Odin put my phone In download mode and then put the boot loader download in BL and the. Put a something unikernel.sbin I believe, whatever the guide said also then it was done. I thought you couldn't use the twrp or custom recovery etc on tmobile one yet but I just read a thing about xtrestolite odex pure v2 which says it's for 5.1.1 and my model of phone but in the guide it says to root using CF auto root and a link there to it but the link doesn't have my phone on the list that the guide that clearly is my phone says to use I don't know if I'm missing something but I want to use it I understand most of it but I don't know if I need to unropt first and re root then use Odin and flash twrp that's supported on my phone then use that to recover the rom. Etc. The kernel that says is used in the guide is the same one I downloaded so do I need to remove it all then let it do that or?
Sorry if this didn't make sense I'm halfway there between confused and understood I have spent the last 10 hours reading and trying to figure this out though lol. Thanks guys!
Also
Sorry for adding more but also how do I flash back to stock? Search for the download to the stock image of my phone? Also I could only find one way of rooting everything else said it wasn't working yet or am I missing a big portion of something here?
Just flash the 5.1.1 firmware to return to stock. To root, flash unikernel with Odin. The other method you used was to not trip knox, but as you experienced has side effects. I had to Odin back to 5.1.1 myself. Can't have those issues
thanks!
so how do i flash back to 5.1.1? find the ling to completely stock 5.1.1 and flash through odin in the same spot and same way i flashed the kernel to root? also.. i rooted with " s6_UniKernel_v2-0003-ODIN.tar" is that not the one you were talking about?

Yes, flashing to 5.1.1 works exactly like that. You need to get the version for your model (very important on this one) and then simply place that file in the AP field of ODIN while the device is in recovery mode. It is normal for ODIN to freeze for 2 minutes while verifying. Make sure to use a MD5 checker tool on the firmware before flashing.
Rooting has historically required more technical savvy and balls than jailbreaking, but PingPong made rooting the S6 brain-dead simple. CF-Auto root is still pretty painless, but you must make sure you have the right zip for your device.
Anyhoo, the quickest & easiest way to restore phone calls & fingerprint scan is to use Odin to get back to bone stock.
Next, use PingPong to root. After rooting, "com.tmobile.pr.adapt" will ask for root access. That is T-Mobile's "phone home" app and sends info about your device (probably including root status). Deny it root access and make sure you check "Remember my choice", and it won't bother you again. You will not lose any functionality by denying it root, so terminate that crap.
Don't bother with rom manager. CWM is archaic. If you want a custom recovery, use TWRP. You can install TWRP either using Odin or TWRP Manager app (it's free).
Good luck and have fun with your S6

Are you still rooted? If so, and if you are experiencing the call audio issue, go flash AOU's kernel. He has made a kernel for the tmo s6. that should eliminate your call audio issue. The finger print scanner is the only issue with flashing his kernel. Also, I rooted with the modded sboot, his TWRP and kernel, and I didn't trip knox

Hi
I have an 920i Note 5. My usb is broken so I can't connect to the pc. I noticed that my phone never goes deep sleep. Always cpu sets in 400mhz. So, I tried to deactivate Google Account Sync, and some packages using the Package Disabler. The problem is that I cant fix it. Tried to clear cache, format data, etc. But the deep sleep never fixes. It uses more battery when it is with the screen turned off, that in the inverse way.
Somebody can give me any hint?
Thanks!

Have you rooted your device or Running stock from beginning? If your device is rooted already i.e to flash custom roms or kernels etc and now you have reverted back to stock thats why facing deep sleep issue theb here is solution by dr.ketan
**Your device must be rooted to use this deep sleep fix patch comes as .apk, it will not work on stock firmware without root as it needs supersu root access**

You have to root your device again and apply deep sleep fix if you want to overcome that issue..And original usb of Samsung is not that much expensive i.e you can't afford it..If your phone's usb port is broken then it might be costly..By the way once you rooted ypur device, knox get tripped and you will face huge battery drain after reverting back to stock..So the solution i have provided already..Refer suggested thread and you will come to know everything regarding rooting, deep slip..

Right, that's the problem. My USB port is broken. I have already bought the spare part, but it will take one month or more to arrive. So, now I have my note with no possible connection to PC so I can use Odin, to root and get the deep sleep issue fixed. There's no way to root without using Odin? Just my phone and Wi-Fi adb or something?

I didn't find any one click root method i.e. rooting without pc using apk like kingroot or kingoroot or one click root apk..But it depends on which version your running, if 5.0.1 then you might get rooted with apk and if 6.0.1 i don't think one click root is available..But still you can google it 'how to root Samsung galaxy note 5 running marshmallow without using pc'

Hello,
I have Samsung J1 mini DUOS , Serial number: SM-J105H, and do you advice to root it? Is it safe? what is pros and cos? Thanks in advanced.
Generally, it is safe. The best/safest way would be to install TWRP or other custom recovery, then use TWRP to install a SuperSU.zip file. I'm definitely a root user so I'm slightly biased... Here are some pros and cons:
Pros-Xposed framework, getting rid of apps you don't use, performance modifications, and customization.
Cons-warranty void, can no longer receive OTA updates, some monetary apps will no longer work (banking apps, samsung pay, etc.)
If i will root it will i get software update? it is Android 5.1.1. when i check software update it says that i have last version. as i know last version is marshmallow. how is possible to install that last one?
I screwerd up my phone badly the other day after flashing supersu through twrp...now my phone wont boot up and i only have stock recovery and bootlogger

Only if you do it manually via ODIN or custom ROM install with TWRP. Once you root it, it will not accept an OTA update. If they release an update and you wanna try it you would have to flash back to stock via Odin. Then it will take the update.

Yes, you will be able to remove unnecessary apps from the system partition. You can also take advantage of apps like Root Booster, that tweak your kernel configurations to give better performance or battery life.
Xposed framework is another great thing, allowing you to add custom ROM modifications to your stock system as well as control and customize your UI without manually modifying applications.
In my opinion, the open-source nature and endless customization is what makes Android OS better than IOS!
Thanks sir. how to begin a rooting it correctly? can u help me? i need step by step tut because to not distroy my mobile.

Hi, I've been using my Moto G Titan (dual-sim) for about 4 years now, mostly with custom rom the whole time (CM 12.1 back then). I upgraded to a Moto G3 TE (and used custom roms from xda here) over a year ago. So then on this phone (titan) I updated the firmware and ROM and passed it on to my wife. I put on Viper OS 7.1.2 on it and initially it was working great. Over time though it increasingly slowed down and clearing the cache and such didn't seem to help (my wife didn't really complain much because she never liked using smart phones anyway and she just thought it *has* to be a poor user experience). I also had my phone (Moto G3 TE) stolen about a month ago, so while I'm waiting to get a new phone my wife and I are sharing this phone (Titan) with two different accounts. Talk about sloooooooooow! So now I realize I REALLY need a different rom. Or is it possible the RAM or something is just old and no longer working right?
I've read on here that many people suggest downgrading to stock lollipop or something like that. Others suggest a custom Marshmallow rom. I honestly don't care too much what I downgrade to as long as the most common apps (gmail, facebook, whatsapp - ones for keeping in touch and getting work done, that sort of thing) are working. Oh, and pinterest, that's the one thing my wife loves. I would like to keep an OS version that allows me to used mixed storage (mixed between adopted/portable) if possible, because that helps me with the low amount of internal memory. But I can give that up if necessary, because above all I want it to be smooth, because this lag is ridiculous! Sometimes a phone call comes in and it's ringing but it takes so long for the screen that shows I can accept/reject the call to pop up that by then the caller has already hung up (like over 10 seconds sometimes)! So yeah, I really want a rom that's responsive again and can do those most basic apps.
My questions is: if I'm on ViperOS 7.1.2 and if lollipop or marshmallow (whether stock or custom) is best - then how do I downgrade to those? I have TWRP and root and all that on here already and I'd love it if I could just do it by TWRP since that'd be the easiest for me. But I'll do whatever I need to as long as I can truly understand the step-by-step directions and not brick this phone. (Since right now it's the ONLY phone my wife and I have to work with until I get a new one in another month or two... and even still I'd like my wife to be able to use this one more easily.) I read somewhere that if I have a newer firmware maybe I can't return directly to an older OS? Any information on how to switch OS without messing up my phone would help a lot!
So, please give me a suggestion as to which OS gives you great responsiveness/speed (doesn't lag you down for phone calls especially, but no lag on any other basic programs would also be great). And regarding the OS you suggest, please tell me what steps I need to take to switch/downgrade to it and/or anything else I need to do to keep it going fast. I found this post, but to be honest, it's just not very clear to me what I'd actually have to *do*: https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/opinion-best-rom-experience-t3546088 So if you could give me a clear step-by-step guide (or point me to one or more threads/posts that I'd link the processes together), that'd be SUPER helpful! Thanks in advance for any help any of you can offer!

As you are currently running android nougat. I suggest you Cosmic Os 7.1.2 AOSP based.
https://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/development/rom-cosmic-os-t3576987
I've been using it over more than 2-3 months as my daily driver. It doesn't lag and 300+ RAM is always free with no apps open in background.
Still if you want to downgrade to marshmallow or lollipop, you'll have to do it using a PC or laptop.

OK, that sounds like a good start! Thanks for your suggestion! I'll wait for a few more responses and info before I decide what route to try first. If I do want to downgrade, what method do I use from PC or laptop? I've used the quickboot/adb shell commands with no trouble before, but only because I've seen step-by-step guides that tell me *what* to put in the adb shell, etc. So, can you help give me a guide on how I'd downgrade or point me to one that has a downgrade that's really fast?

I don't recommend downgrading to Lollipop or Marshmallow as they lack RAM management and heat up the phone while gaming plus Ui is not that good. Android Nougat has better RAM management with fluid performance and battery backup is good as well.
Here's Stock Marshmallow TWRP backup thread and it's detailed enough so that you won't brick your phone
Take a Nandroid backup before.
First, what's the model of your Titan and country?
I think it's not a good idea to downgrade to older stock as it might lead to device getting bricked .... luckily I have never faced such as an issue as I always stick to custom ROMs for my Titan ....I request you to look up Titan downgrade brick stories and get a better idea about how to avoid it ....
Also have you tried using Aex 5.6 on your phone with evolution kernel? it used to work brilliantly on mine before I jumped on to renans los 16 pie builds

Thanks for the extra advice. You didn't actually include the link for the thread though. Were you just waiting for my model # (below)? But yes, I'm used to doing the Nandroid backups through TWRP so that's no challenge for me.
It's an XT1068. I bought it from Amazon US but I'm living in Madagascar and have used it here most the time I've had it. It's also worked for me in South Africa and USA though too.
Anyway, I'll appreciate the link to the stock marshmallow twrp backup thread, in case that's the route I decide to go! I won't be doing any gaming on it though (wife's phone) and just need it to work well enough for phone calls, messages, and other important aspects of life. And yeah, I like the newer UI, but if it's too slow, I can't do much with it! So I'll have to think about the other suggestions people have given here and also weigh it in with the possibility of downgrading to marshmallow with that detailed step-by-step so I won't brick my phone.

Thanks also for your advice. I've never been bricked either, but I don't want to start, especially since we're down to 1 phone in my family right now! If someone can tell me that downgrading is definitely way smoother (as I've seen written on a few threads here, but without detailed instructions on how to do it) and if they say I can do it without bricking, then I might take that route. I haven't tried AEX on this phone, though I was using it on my Moto G3 TE before it got stolen. So yeah, that's a good idea if you say it works great. Can you link to a thread for me? Particularly when you say "with evolution kernel"... in the past I don't think I've tried a different kernel for my rom, I've always just followed step-by-steps for flashing a custom rom and gapps, that sort of thing. So if I have to do an extra step for the evolution kernel, please also tell me how or where to find the thread about it. Thanks again for your help!

The links to Aex and evolution kernel for titan
madagascaradam said:

Thanks a lot! How do I use a different kernel than the one that comes with the ROM? Do I flash/install AEX first and *then* follow those directions for the evolution kernel? Or do I do the kernel first and then AEX? And I'm assuming I download the first kernel download link on that page (the one that says Marshmallow/Nougat Roms and "R10")? Basically, I'd really appreciate it if you'd offer more information on what it means to switch kernels and how to do that? Thanks again for your help!
Download Aex then install it first

Install rom first then make a backup of only boot install kernel after that , there is a another version of evolution kernel with overclock enabled if you feel that evolution is slow try evolutionX ,it's bit of a battery hog but runs like butter.
Switching kernels gives you access to better features in you kernel like updated tweaks, governors overclock ,undervolt ,sound gain boost etc which the stock kernel doesn't provide in most cases .....only few kernels are as up-to-date with extra features as evolution imo so try it if you don't like how it performs you can tweak it more with kernel aduitor ,for faster feeling phone I normally disable all animations under devoloper options .you can also flash evolutionx to see if it suits you or not just restore the boot backup you made and flash it then test ......
Get the kernel for Oreo as Aex 5.8 is Oreo
Before flashing plz make sure twrp is updated
Always backup important data into your mircosd card or PC
I recommend a full wipe ( system ,data, internal storage, caches) with twrp and then install the new ROM
Do let me know how it goes ....

Hey, so I had a busy week and I'm just now getting to this. Do I still need to flash a superuser image in order to get superuser working on this (like for fx explorer root or those sort of things)? I have this superuser package I used last time I installed the ViperOS (that's super slow that I'm replacing now): SR1-SuperSU-v2.82-SR1-20170608224931.zip Do I still need that? I can't seem to find an updated one on here or maybe it's buried because it's too old. Maybe people don't use SuperSU anymore? Just wondering. Thanks for any help! And I'll let you know how the new image goes later today.
Use magisk it's way better

Thanks again! So, I did try SuperSU since it looked like it'd be easy (just install that app) and the Magisk thing said better to go back to stock rom in order to make it work. But SuperSU then was a big headache, after a lot of work I got rid of it, and installed Magisk (without going back to stock rom) and everything was good. Any particular modules you'd suggest using with Magisk?
But overall: I followed your advice and everything seems good. This is my first time to use Oreo and I do like it so far. I haven't turned of animations yet, but I might soon. It's still running fairly fast like I'd expect. I still have to install a few apps on my account and I'll wait and see if that slows anything down. But my wife's account has all her stuff on it, everything logged in, and it seems like it's still smooth. I'm going to give it a few days to a week and see if anything slows it down before I report back to you.
I did have a few questions though: under the AEX extensions, it says "system app remover" and I tried to remove a couple weird apps I don't need on there (like "retro music player" - I don't have any idea how that even got there). I had to enable root for it, but it still doesn't seem to have disappeared. Any idea how to fully get rid of non-wanted system apps?
In that same area for removing system apps (built into the AEX extensions) it looks like there are quite a few theme "apps" already inside it, including even some dark themes for contacts (which I'd really appreciate). But I can't find in the rom anywhere to enable themes. If I download the substratum app, will it automatically give me access to those built-in themes or want? If you know anything about this let me know.
Also, under the aex extensions is an option for weather on the lock screen, but the weather service doesn't seem to be working at all yet. Any idea on that?
Even if you don't know about those things, that's OK, maybe I'll post and ask those questions in the AEX thread and see if anyone has anything to say there.
Overall, everything has worked great so far though, which is great and I appreciate all the advice you've given me! I'll just give it some time to see if it stays fast with regular use, and of course I need to keep making a few tweaks to it.
Glad it worked out

The ROM still has some unimplemented stuff system app remover in extensions
As for modules is use viper4android to tweak sound and
Terminal debloater to remove unwanted system apps via terminal
You need to enable it via developer options ...
And about the theme apps you found in system apps remover ,those are simply the colour overlays the system uses for automatically setting system theme based on wallpaper colour, to manually set theme you can try going into system>display >ui theme and try changing stuff there it has the pre-installed colour schemes .......
You will find the option to change the system fonts there too.....
For weather you need to enable the service by going into weather>service ......
Also to keep things smooth use greenify and greenify all the apps that don't need to run in the background .....enable agressive doze there .....
Also go into settings>extensions>system>app ops side scroll to boot up and take away boot permission from any and every app that you don't use immediately after powering your phone .....it helps speed up the phone a lot .
Go to extentions and general tweaks and turn on disable FC notifications too...
Get sd maid free and do cleanup of system cleaner and corpse finder every month end .....
Go to dialer>three dots >settings then enable proximity speakerphone it very good feature ......
Happy it all worked out for yaa ...
I have a question though ,did you do a full format in twrp ?
I mean the format data option where you need to type yes to proceed . That speed up lag on my phone after I moved from stock so next time you might wanna try that before installing a new ROM....

Thanks for all the extra advice! A lot of that certainly helped. It was actually slowing down again a bit within a few days, but greenify made an immediately noticeable difference, as well as a few of those other things you mentioned.
The weather thing still isn't working even though I have it enabled. Maybe because I'm in Madagascar and most services don't cover weather here?
I couldn't find the dialer either, so I couldn't get to its settings. I'm interested in what the proximity speakerphone does though.
I didn't do any format where I needed to type "yes" to proceed, but when I did wipe I chose every aspect of the storage and wiped all of it (even the memory card). So maybe that was just a simple delete rather than an actual format. I'll keep this in mind though next time I flash a system from start. Though I had the memory card formatted as mixed storage (gave 10 GB of it to the system ["expanded"] and the rest for normal portable use) and the expanded portion reads funny now in the storage settings - as if it had 128 GB and 118 GB were already used. That's strange, but it doesn't seem to affect anything so I'm not worrying about it.
Dialer is the phone app ..

The dialer app is what you use to call a number typing it ,it is the phone app with the telephone icon ,tap the three dots on the top right side there you will find settings ....
About the weather try changing the weather provider to Yahoo ....might work.. .
Also try getting the universal GMS doze module in magisk it stops Google services from slowing the phone ...
I personally don't use gapps at all, I have yalpstore for my app needs. if Google is not that important for you then maybe in the future you might try ROM without it .....
Hope it helps.....
