Hello. I'm impressed with how Xiaomi has unveiled the next not-really-concept phone known as the Mi Mix. Now, the point that surprises me is that the whole phone is surrounded in ceramic, not metal nor plastic. I'm simply one of those people who are curious as to how utterly fragile this phone is, but I don't know, and we better have to wait for a drop test of this brittle phone.
Anyways, what are your thoughts on the construction of this phone?
ceramic is actually a name for a wide array of materials that share some traits. when ceramic is mentioned you shouldn't instantly assume that it's the same thing cups are made of. for example there are ceramic brake discs, do you think those are so brittle?
The problem with this phone is that there's no bezel or upper corners to cushion the falls. when this thing drops the whole force goes straight to the glass which is a big hazard.
Drops without protection will certainly be more fatal than a regular phone, due to the edgeless design.. Part of the tradeoff
Hey guys this may help to give you an idea of the device durability against scratches etc. Those videos are on the previous Mi 5 which is also made of ceramic. I don't think dropping your set from a distance on a concrete surface will survive
https://youtu.be/cuDvvs8bJyQ
https://youtu.be/JLWq1NMBpRA
Let's have it first and then we will try to break it LOL
chances are very limited to get one :crying:
Ceramic's strength is scratch and corrosion resistance. It's hard-impact resistance isn't as great.
A back made from ceramic would certainly be stronger than glass, and can probably take a hard drop better than glass, but it's hard-impact strength is still lesser than metal or a polycarbonate.

How on earth can someone do their own evaluation? Drop it on purpose?
It's safe to assume that dropping this phone is a bad bad bad idea.
I always use phones two handed, so I'm not concerned about it.

No mate I did not mean to drop their phones , but to check the body and evaluate it's strength

right on! but it would be nice to know the phone could withstand more than a sneeze towards it
between the fragile screen, average-at-best camera, price gauging, long delivery terms, and most likely a small developer community, i don't even know if i want this phone anymore...
i'm actually keeping my ears open for the microsoft/intel phone http://www.gsmarena.com/concept_pho..._the_longawaited_surface_phone-news-21468.php

surface phone looks good in concept but think it will be the usual 5.5 ad nauseam size (tops 5.9 imo).
EDIT: HP Elite x3 is already out there sporting a 6inch screen (W10 platform)
http://www.gsmarena.com/hp_elite_x3-7954.php
two biggest concerns for me on the Mix: 1) fragility (no Gorilla glass-confirm?) 2) Camera (though suspect this will get tweaked) 3) lack of bands 17 and 12 for LTE (in the U.S) - mostly concerned with 1 and 2. Not too concerned with the price gouging (tops around $100-120 when all is said and done) or development. Miui has always been great from old Note 1 and 2 port days.

eh, we will see. i cooled off from the mix hype. i'm pretty content with my current phone ( note 4 ) i wanted the mix due to the bezelless design and because it was finally something new in the phone market and not just 0.1 bigger screen 0.2GHz more cpu and new launcher icons like it is most of the time nowadays.....

that's what insurances are for
That test heavily depends on how it lands on the surface but lack of mass and metal should help with transferring some of the impact
I've made a post in the SGS2 forum but i've dropped my phone without a case several times already and it took some damage on the casing where it hit the asphalt/concrete surfaces multiple times but no cracked screens yet
that's the whole reason why Samsung choose plastic over metal case
makes it more crash resistant by default, in addition to the gorilla glass
however... there's another truth not many site has reviewed or shown.
the sudden heat/cold change can shatter the gorilla lass on the Galaxy S phones easily
of course that will apply to almost anything else as well.
fun video 10char
absolutely brilliant !
lol! thats whats insurance is for
Yes, because everyone chooses a phone looking at the drop tests. Let's get a Nokia 5210 then
Awesome! I'm always dropping my phone lol
Sandwich of two pieces of glass and a tiny strip of metal isn't my definition of "durable and tough".
Samsung chose plastic over metal because it is just better. I've dropped Omnia 7 (only one of two in Latvia) and the glass shattered, however Galaxy S and Ace are more resistant.

Yeah they are samsung did a great job designing their devices to take a hit. My captivate has fallen down two flights of stairs and all it did was crack the slider where the charger plugs in didn't even scratch the screen.
The old iPhones could take a drop much better than the 4s, I've watched my brother drop his face first a few times, it was the 3gs, and never did more than chip the edge. Then he bought the original iphone 4 and shattered the screen the first week.
Sorry to hear about your omnia, thats a tough break with only 2 in the country.

the original content is about the material quality of iphone4s vs Galaxy S2 in a drop test
the topic is not about who created a flat screen smartphone/tablet first, nor about apple vs android, there's already a topic for that here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1246779

I didn't expect it to do this well. Impressive
So this phone manages to take a drop onto a brick road and not break while others have happened to just break inside their POCKET. Hmmm
We're all in limbo and this dude just wants to break one
It did OK though, I'm hoping to have a case on it ASAP so dropping it shouldn't be as scary.

That's not bad at all for dual glass! The iPhone 4/4S shattered from 6ft.
How do we know the one he dropped was the same one he showed to the camera afterwards? It was off-screen after the drop.
Anyhoo. Glass back or not, I'm sure LG took into consideration droppage and I doubt the back is any more delicate than the front.
The only concern I have is that the phone seems very slippery and so I'm more likely to drop it.

I would really recommend a cover for this phone, if you're like me, you'll be a victim of spontaneous human combustion if the back glass cracks.
I'm probably a month or more away from a phone, i already have a front screen protector and one for the back.
it was hard to watch a rare specie of smartphones being drop tested.
i am kind of relieved to know it would withstand a waist high fall.

MAY withstand. But then it could survive a higher drop and break on a much smaller drop. So many variables.
My son dropped his iPad countless times and never suffered a single scratch on the glass and just minor scratches on the back. He even once dropped it down the stairs and still it remained in one piece.
The one day it fell off his knee in the car and dropped 18 inches to the floor and the front completely shattered.
Knowing how the phone looks dissembled I wonder if there will be a way to take the glass off the back keeping all the wireless charging, antenna and replace with 3rd party glass.
I know with the 4s it was very simple to replace the glass back.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rofgMueCOqo
Both of those use GG so it should be a good comparison.

yes very true, this Nexus took the damage from its side on the first drop test. on the bright side, the impact didn't fracture the glass, something that i feared.
I don't like the fact that this phone has a glass back. What is the point? Style? It is just anotehr thing to shatter. Apple set a bad precedent and as fantastic as this phone is, I'd rather have it more durable.
Since the heyday with android phones, vs the Gphone(g stands for girl) everyone use to rave about how a metal housing was so awesome and now a days many reviews about the GS5 is about how they are disappointed with the phone still having a plastic housing.
I don't want metal, if this was 1960, people would be in awe with plastics. Plastic is durable, doesn't dent, holds up to decent abuse, is flexible and honestly IMO its got a great feel. Much better then some cold metal feeling.
Also, one of the biggest things. Removable battery and expandable memory! I don't know of any metal phones that have a removable battery and I pray to god that the future Galaxies don't fall victim to BS. Not only does this phone have a removable battery and storage expansion, but it can withstand water! that IMO is innovative! Look at the HTC ONE 8, or the Gphone, all metal, sealed battery (Retarded IMO, with a device like this.. Imagine having a point and shoot camera with no option to change the battery out) and they can't withstand water.
Finally, all these people that swear the metal housing phones are the best, they all slap plastic cases on top of them anyway!
I just hope Samsung stay true to the removable battery phone, its IMO why I stick with them and will continue to!
Is this a question or a rant?

Nope. I'm coming from a long line of iPhones and sure it feels nice...but it damages too easily. All of my previous iPhones are damaged in some way or another. Not to mention, the majority of those raving about the metal body slap a case on it anyways, so there goes the "look and feel" argument they love to use.

So, what are you hoping to achieve with this thread?
I could care less about metal or plastic, I care about UI and features plus battery life. I'm not a diva or a hipster.

To me it depends on overall quality of the device. If I can get a water resistant device and have it feel good in the hand, which imo the S5 does, then I'm for it.
I was really hoping there was going to be a super high end S5 variant with a 2k screen 3gbs of ram ect, which prolly would have had a metal finish. Hope there still will be then I'll go from there. But the features of a given phone sell me not the overall make of it so much, though that does play a part.

I think k we all agree with you. Yes a build of a phone is great, I don't wanna end up with a square phone lol. But at the end of the day I rather have the thinness and lightweight of the S5 plus its So much more ergonomic. Throw in the removable back and water resistance and I cannot complain.
I think this plastic thing is made by ppl who want to bash Samsung just cause they don't like them. Cheap plastic blah blah blah. So many things we use in our lives are made of plastic or have plastic in them.

Yep.. Look at most tv's, bezel is plastic.. Shoot, look at our cars, no longer do we have the big ugly METAL bumpers, they are an ergonomic PLASTIC. again, IMO plastic is the way to go, and there are levels of plastic, I like this ribbed back on the S5, its ribbed for MY pleasure for once
I would prefer it was metal as it IMO feels more premium. However if it meant sacrificing removable battery then not.
I never put my phone in a case, just take care of it. My i5s, HTC one never got scratched up.

I have no issues with plastic. There are many types of plastics, strong/flexible/light. You can mix and match whatever you want with plastics.
I don't see how metal is "premium".
I thought I wanted metal, because I could flex and listen to my S4 creek and crack with a tiny bit of pressure and flexing. The S5 is a lot sturdier, feels a lot more solid and doesn't flex one bit.

Hi guys,
Using ultra hybrid and spigen crystal sp. Now using tempered glass sp which does not cover the left rdge of gorilla glass. Left edge having rainbow effect too.
Its not one ant. Is a few ants.
3 at headphone jack. Some loitering sp area which at left of gorilla glass. Did suspect it went through the gap of gorilla and head inside.
Lol. Is annoying. Will the ant cause damage if it went through the left gap. Or headphone jack.
Nope my note 4 does not attract insects of any kind
I think you should give your phone a nice spray down with RAID. ????

That, or they're marvelling at the new Samsung's build quality. They'll report home to the queen that the Note 4 is the phone for her.
e: Oh, and pics or it didn't happen
Either you got something sugary like chocolate or soft drink that dripped into your phone OR they are just curious. The Note 4 smells of chemical inside when I open the battery cover, its a smell I've never smelt before and maybe its tricking the ants?
Ants attracted to electronics is an actual problem with one type of ant in particular ("crazy ants").
"Electrical equipment: In areas infested by the tawny crazy ant, large numbers of ants have accumulated in electrical equipment, causing short circuits and clogging switching mechanisms resulting in equipment failure (see “Ants and Their Affinity for Electrical Utilities” at http://www.extension.org/pages/30057/ants-and-their-affinity-for-electrical-utilities)." http://urbanentomology.tamu.edu/ants/rasberry.html
First time I hear about this. Could it be temperature? Perhaps Note 4 is warmer than the surroundings.
uh oh... soon iverge will be reporting on "antgate."

just wanna make sure your not advertising for them
The last time i used a Luphie case (similar to this) was on my Note 4 and it was terrible.
Looked great on my note 4!
but
1. effected signal badly
2. poor build quality (the lock mechanism was loose and only got looser as time went on)
3. the back glass cracked extremely easily, i didnt even drop it one day i took it out my pocket and it was cracked.
once it cracked it destroyed the only thing it had going for it (the looks) was dissapointed!
if they have fixed all these issues then it looks pretty nice

I had started my reply before you had posted the pictures. When the phone is face down, does it sit on the phones screen or does the bumper case have a lip?
Thanks for adding those pics.

It has a lip, something like 0.5 mm. Maybe a little less.

On AliExpress
The Ebay seller ships from china too, i think.
How tight fit is this bumper and back glass? I had on the patchworks level ITG case on mine, dropped from a 3ft bathroom sink, landed in the corner and cracked the screen even with the tempered glass on! I could not use the phone for a week until I realized the display was separated from the gorilla glass panel so I pried it up so it can "glue" back. Thank god I got Square trade warranty.
I have yet to find a good case to protect it since. My guess was the more tight fit the case, there is less room for shock absorption so it goes straight to the phone itself.

Well the phone is not moving around within the case. But the inside of the aluminium frame and the metal frame of the tempered glass back are covered with a foam material. That's necessary to not scratch our Note 8 for sure and it should prevent the phone from being broken if it drops. Anyway this is not a hardcore drop survivor case like the UAG cases are, i think. I've already searched for a drop test, but wirhout success. There are some aluframe test, but not for one of these.
If the community donates me another Note 8 i'll try that for you guys for sure
The Mi Mix i have owned was covered by a Luphie metal bumper having the same material inside. It dropped once out of the carmount between seat and middle console onto the metal mount of the Recaros. Just a tiny mark on the metal frame, but nothing happened to the phone! The corner it dropped onto, perfect condition. Remember, the Mix is ceramic! These frames definitly offer a decent protection. It's for sure a high quality aluminium.

Zzzz so it actually has all that disgusting writing all over it? That's the only thing keeping me from actually buying one...

As you can see on the pictures of my phone (last two attached pictures), yes. The rebranded one Zizo offers has a Zizo Text and the bottom text. The top one is missing if i remember right. Well, if you don't like the writing, don't buy this case.
My mother droptested it for me in the meantime. From the wireless charger, around 75cm height, onto a wood floor. Well, everything fine, no scratches, simply zero damage.

Here's a very nice metal bumpercase I've bought at AliExpress. It looks outstanding, offers a decent protection level and the manucaturing quality is on a very high level. Signal quality is perfect like the manufacturer promises. The case is available in serveral color, black, gold, blue, etc. It is offered for a very reasonable price around 15€.
@Mr.Ash.Man
Especially for you. Added two pictures showing my device with one of your custom AOD backgrounds.

Nice case! Just cancelled mine after heaeing feedbacks on the GPS glitch when used with this case on. I wonder if you've experienced that? Especially, when inside the car?
