Updates after unlocked bootloader - Huawei P9 Plus Questions & Answers

Sorry for the nooby question but I am new to Huawei. Will I keep receiving updates after unlocking my boot loader ? What if I'll route my phone, will updates keep coming ?
Thanks for the help.

yes u can always receive & download updates.
u just cant flash the firmware if u r on custom recovery (twrp, etc). root will be removed. updates will overwrite system partition to stock.
Sent from my Huawei P9 Plus using XDA Labs

download update then you can just flash stock recovery (no need to remove later versions of SU as they are integrated into system) then after update, flash TWRP and SU (to get root back), takes 5 minutes.

I always flash TWRP to the erecovery (recovery2) partition, so no need to flash the stock Recovery before the update
This way you can have stock recovery & TWRP at the same time.

When your phone boots just press volume up at the screen which says that your device is unlocked and can't be trusted. You also can use the apk from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=67463880&postcount=6
By the way, do you plan to make a Rom for the P9 Plus? I know you from my old Xperia days and always loved your Roms

Just boot into fastboot mode and flash the TWRP.img with this command: “fastboot flash recovery2 twrp.img“ and replace twrp with the name of your twrp image.

there are 2 recoveries for this but I never thought about making use of the second one... How do you choose which recovery to enter into though?

If you want to boot into stock recovery, press and hold volume up right after you started/restarted your phone (you have to press the button before you see the Huawei logo).
For twrp just press and hold volume up when you see the screen which says your device is unlocked.
Or you can use the app from post #6.

Hi,
You have to flash stock recovery via ADB. Only image 1 not 2. Than you can easy flash a stock rom via dload Method.
All you need is here:

Hi,
I need help... I'm trying to go back to stock recovery & firmware, I have already tried everything and I'm absolutely fustrated:crying::crying::crying:
1.- I had TWRP recovery and MIUI, the phone (ASCEND P7-L10) is rooted
2.- After downloading flashify and the stock recovery, I have installed the stock recovery, everything OK.
3.- Rebbot into recovery and when I try to wipe data and/or cache it says:
data wipe completed (or cache wipe completed)
huawei cust fail
If I try to install any ROM B120, B126, B133, B135... I always get the same error, "cust fail"
If I reboot the phone still has MIUI... but I need to restore to factory recovery/firmware...
Help needed, I'm going to hit the roof...
thanks in advance!
Put your original firmware on dload in sd card, flash original recovery with fastboot or flashify, shut down your phone. Now press power volume- and volume+ ! This will install the original firmware.

Use only original stock cust.img extracted from stock ROM. I always do it in this order:
1. Download mode and flashing stock recovery
2. Recovery mode and wipe (both option)
3. Download mode and flashing cust.img
4. Recovery mode and wipe (both option)
5. If still error go download mode and flash:
cust.img, cache.img, userdata.img, system.img
6. Recovery mode and wipe (both option)
I had many times this error while reverting my B135 after MIUI ROM.

Huawei has released an official downgrade ROM (B603) here (russian site):
http://download-c.huawei.com/download/downloadCenter?downloadId=38601&version=66144&siteCode=ru
You'll also need this official EMUI 3.0 recovery image:
https://mega.co.nz/#!ZZ9QxIiL!Cn4mV2ZG2zzFc956CoWQh4BnBQqyK4rClghlY8CoXQk
As well as fastboot/ADB (platform tools) files here:
https://www.androidfilehost.com/?fid=9390355257214632011
Now here's how you do it.
Copy the dload folder (found in ROM) to the root of your SD Card
Now turn off your phone
While off press and hold Vol Down & Power Key, when screen turns on release Power Key, but keep holding the Vol Down key until you see a white screen (fastboot mode)
Now decompess files from platform tools to a new folder called ADB on your desktop for example
Hold down Shift and right click on ADB folder on your Desktop and choose "run command windows here", a little black window should pop up
Now type:
fastboot devices - this is to check if your phone is correctly detected (if not, then drivers are needed. Just install HiSuite)
fastboot flash recovery stockEMUI3.0RECOVERY.img
fastboot reboot
Your phone will now boot into your current OS. Go to Settings>Updates>Local Update
This will install the downgrade ROM from russian Huawei site (B603)
After this is installed your phone will boot into your current OS again. This time delete UPDATE.APP from dload folder and put your stock firmware in there.
Now repeat the process Settings>Update>Local Update
This time it will finally install that stock KitKat with EMUI 2.3 OMG !!! Finally !!!
God i hope i'll never have to do this again

You will need to flash the stock recovery in the same way that you flashed the TWRP recovery. So the way I would do it is connect phone to laptop..then use command
"adb reboot bootloader"
Then when your phone is in bootloader mode and with the stock recovery in the same folder as where fastboot and adb are use the command
"fastboot flash recovery recovery.img"
And replace recovery. img with the name of the recovery u want to flash.
Then reboot and you should be back to stock
I am on L09 but if you want I can upload my recovery
Edit: I found a stock recovery file in a thread, this is the one I used on my L09 - READ THE COMPATABILITY WARNING BEFORE FLASHING AS YOUR OWN RISK

extract the recovery.img from your current update.app. then flash the img-file like you flashed the twrp recovery.

even with TWRP recovery you can´t flash anything with adb/fastboot while your device is FRP Locked.

The "fastboot boot recovery.img" is not supported in hboot 1.54 to 1.61 (was only supported in 1.44). So you can't boot a recovery you must flash it over your stock recovery using "fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.0-2-m7.img":
Code:
fastboot flash recovery twrp-3.0.0-2-m7.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Then reboot in recovery mode.

Nandroid backup of? It depends what is included in the backup.... if the data partition is included and there were a lot of things saved on the phone then yes it can be really big.... Normally id say around 1.5 gb is normal when its a stock backup without any user data.

If you are going to use twrp's root make sure you have a recent twrp version otherwise it will flash an outdated SU version and cause a Bootloop. But yes it's a reliable method, if you prefer you can flash the latest supersu.zip file from twrp.

Oneplus 3 decryption Ultimate guide

Ok guys, this is a sureshot guide for
PROBLEM
* anyone wanting to decrypt their op3 but stuck at 1+ boot screen(Or not able to boot any custom ROMs.) and only able to restore twrp backups
* After using fastboot format userdata twrp and about phone shows only 32gb phone memory(where the hell is my rest of 32gb )
* Fastboot format userdata resulting in Stuck at boot screen or simply an unbrick trick to return to Stock OOS in unencrypted stage
SOLUTION
1. Use method 2 of Mega unbrick guide to restore your phone to stock partitions found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/guide-mega-unbrick-guide-hard-bricked-t3405700
2. After the flashing is complete do not reboot the phone instead reboot directly into bootloader.
3. In fastboot mode flash modded twrp 3.0.2.22 using command ''fastboot flash recovery recovery.img'' found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/devdb/project/?id=15934#downloads
4. Reboot directly into twrp and using mtp mode copy latest elemental x kernel or bluspark kernel zip for OOS and SYSTEM supersu.zip into the internal storage. System supersu.zip here OR directly proceed to step 8
https://s3-us-west-2.amazonaws.com/supersu/download/zip/SuperSU-v2.78-201609011115.zip
5. Now flash system supersu.zip and directly after that kernel.zip
6. Now again reboot to recovery directly and from twrp boot into system.
7. After boot up you system should be decrypted. You can check in security settings.
8.Reboot recovery and flash required firmware + modem zip found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3/how-to/radio-modem-collection-flashable-zips-t3468628
9.wipe data +cache +dalvik +system
10. Flash any rom of your choice and go flashoholic, use multirom or whatever you want.
Pheww. Thanks.
Man, Finally the SystemRoot (V4A, MultiROM etc) as we discussed a couple of weeks back with this hassle at the Mega Unbrick and Decrypt guides threads...:highfive:
I saw your post on MultiROM but maybe it got moved I guess...
So are you able to cross flash anything now ?
thanks.

Yes you can but you will be encrypted again. so after msm method reboot fastboot and flash modded twrp. reboot recovery flash CB or OOS. flash supersu flash kernel. Agin flash twrp.img from recovery itself and reboot recovery. After that reboot system and you are good to go. Make sure you have enough system space before flashing supersu and kernel. frow twrp file manager delete unneeded system apps 1st. DO NOT REBOOT in between.

Recovery vs eRecovery

Hi there.
I have been flashing ROMS since ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) but for the last 18 months I have been a bit disconnected from it.
I am also new to everything Huawei.
I find a lot of times people referring to the eRecovery.
Where does this terminology (eRecovery) differ from the normal recovery, be it stock recovery or TWRP?
Is this eRecovery a Huawei thing or am I missing something?
Thanks in advance.
It is nothing to really worry or even think about. I don't think you can get rid of it or even if you could there is no reason. It's just second recovery which does a different things than the normal stock recovery. I think the eRcovery is needed for the stock update, but normal recovery isn't(not completely sure about this).
It is just good to know that device also has eRecovery, because there are some users who install TWRP and then they boot to eRecovery and then they think the TWRP installation failed.
I don't know is it just huawei thing.
Hope this helps a bit, even though it's a bit messy info.

Thanks for the information.
It has definitely given me a much better idea regarding what is eRecovery.
Much appreciated.
it's basically useless on this phone. it will never fetch any package nor restore your device. most people either just keep it and dont bother using it or flash TWRP over it. by having stock recovery as 'recovery' and TWRP as 'recovery2' you can have access to official OTA updates yet still being able to do everything you could do with TWRP

Nice! I am interested in that!
Keeping both recoveries and not loosing OTA sounds good to me.
Have you any idea how to accomplish this please? Any link or for that matter where could I download stock recovery for PRA-LX1?
Thank you!

flash this as recovery (fastboot flash recovery RECOVERY.img) and this as recovery2 (fastboot flash recovery2 twrp-3.1.1-2-v1-prague.img)

Thank you!
I was really trying to find the stock recovery for PRA-LX1 from somewhere. Very handy!
Now, having both recoveries flashed, I gather that there will be also the need to unroot when I want to receive OTA or not?

nope! you can install OTAs with root and unlocked bootloader (although you have to download and install FULL-OTA packages. basically just clicking three dots when you've received an update and selecting 'download full package' or something like that)
Hello! My Y9 2018 FLA-LX3 uses fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk for TWRP, but it removes stock recovery. Can I flash TWRP to the recovery2/erecovery slot? And if so, what is the command? I have ramdisk, so to flash TWRP I'd use recovery_ramdisk instead of recovery. So, do I use recovery2_ramdisk? Thx!

Yes, you can flash TWRP over eRecovery.
Since A8 and above you can not install TWRP over eRecovery from fastboot, only from TWRP:
- Copy TWRP file to the SD card
- Boot in TWRP, select storage - SD Card, select "Install image", find TWRP file and mark eRecovery, swipe.
- reboot .

Oh thx! But I don't like it bc my goal is to leave stock recovery INTACT. So, I've been also trying to use fastboot to use fastboot boot "TWRP".img That's my goal, even though it hasn't worked. That is my ideal solution. Thx"!

And what's stopping you from installing TWRP instead of eRecovery and then installing Recovery back?
No matter what your ideal solution is, this is the only way.
Okay. So, I can an have tried to install TWRP just normally using fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk twrp.img That works, but the issue is that I can't find the stock/original recovery.img to replace it with when I'm finished. I extracted the UPDATE.APP and found a recovery_ramdisk.img. I am kinda scared to try to flash it using the same command for twrp, so I haven-t tried it. Can u pls tell me if I shall do it So in theory, fastboot flash recovery_ramdisk recovery_ramdisk.img
Oh and FYI, that image was extracted from a working UPDATE.app I used for my particular phone and it has always worked, just that it restores EVERYTHING. I just want the recovery back when I finish with TWRP. I-m giving it away and dont want the new owners messing with TWRP, since it can do harm to the phone if misused. Thx!!!

Or, you can flash it in TWRP ("install image" option).
