Check system version ? - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I rooted my device a year ago and if I click on "Update" in order to check the system version I get a parental control block message. (I assume in order to block OTA?). Any other ideas?

Ad blocker?

I have a rooted HTC One, running stock rom. I installed ad block but it also blocks any MMS sending and receiving. Is there a work around for this? Or another ad block program that would be useful? I also noticed ad block is using majority of my data. I assume that is ads that it is blocking. Is there a way to get them to not even load? ie. not use any bandwidth blocking ads?
I use Ad Away. It doesn't actually do any active blocking itself, it merely reroutes any requests to ad sites to localhost, so it comes up blank. Uses absolutely nothing in terms or resources that I'm aware of it, and has no effect on messages.
May I ask where you got the ad away zip file? All I can find is the apk.
Dude instal apk ,run it ,instal host ,no ads voila.
It's hosted on F-Droid now that it's booted from play.
Make sure to have your system partition writable

There's also ad block plus.

Extract that to system/etc and reboot.
Done.
Hey, I have the HTC One Dev Edition and it is telling me that I need to ROOT the phone. I thought all these phones were already factory "rooted" or is bootloader unlocked not the same as "rooted" ?

Nope, an unlocked bootloader just gives you the access to root

I see, time to follow youtube vid. So far, as an iOS to Android convert, Ads is the one thing that is making me want to go back to iOS. On iOS, I just installed Cydia and then adblock from sources. Gotta make this AdAway 2.3 work and I think I will have no more complaints.

[Q] Remove Xperia system update notification?

I'm getting this notification about the system update, and it is persistent.
I've tried checking the box "do not remind me about this update " and restarting several times.
I do not wish to update, in case a root method comes out for the old fw version.
So how do I remove this notification?
Go to Settings>Apps>All>Update Center
And untick show notifications. Hope it works for you

For a weary traveler with the same problem this is what I did: I am rooted and installed titanium backup. open titanium backup, search for update and wipe data for update service 1.0 and software update. Then freeze both apps and you will not have any problem with the install file downloading. Hope that helps.
How can I disable the update notification on my Z5 Compact running 5.1, I don't want to go to Marshmallow
and this update at the top has been there for ever
Thanks

I've no data atm on the handset, do you mean using Titanium backup ?
If so i'll need to wait until Thursday until my data is renewed, I was hoping on 5.1 there was a setting I could change as this is an old thread

The advice for Titanium is a load of Tosh, never did nothing
Anyone got any other ideas, i've had 2 system updates stuck on the Z5 compact for 2 weeks lol

this worked for me, no root, you have to hide com.sonyericsson.updatecenter
adb shell
pm hide com.sonyericsson.updatecenter
exit
adb reboot
There is no update center in L.
You can close the permanent notification with force stopping Software Update app in Settings/All.

I have a rooted xperia z5 compact and this worked for me!
Try this:
About:1.You can use the Notify Block
2.In the presence of rooting:
2.1. Using the application ® Root Explorer (File Manager), follow the path: system/priv-ap/UpdateCenter/ and delete UpdateCenter.apk
2.2. Using the application ® Titanium Backup remove\freeze "software Update".
The first reply mentions Settings -> Apps -> All, but there is NO "All", so that suggestion does not help.

Disable MotorolaOTA in the system apps in settings. If you're rooted, you can freeze it in the /system folder using Titanium or whatever else you use. Safest thing to do is to rename it with a .bak at the end, then when you're ready to update you just remove it and reboot.

Thanks for the reply. I froze it with Ti Backup, but I'm still able to check for updates manually and it reports normally.
Shouldn't that function be disabled if the OTA apparatus is truly disabled?
I do see in firewall a process called 'Device Management that I thought I could block MotorolaOTA from communicating, but there are other functions bundled, so I don;t want to do that.
Ideas, anyone?

Motorola will still be able to be communicated to, but the OTA function will be disabled, eg. no OTA will be detected. It is my understanding that blocking MororolaOTA just keeps the notification from appearing and prevents OTA downloads.

Thanks again - that makes sense. I'll see the rollout on my stock Pure (if I still have it and decide not to sell it) and be able to compare in real-time if it does the trick.

Disable OTA

In previous versions of Android, disabling the OTA was easy.
I can't figure out how to on Lollipop, though. I'm currently on 5.0.1, and just got the OTA notification for 5.1. I don't want to upgrade yet, as I'm rooted, and I don't have time to deal with it this week.
How can I disable the OTA from going? I downloaded the OTA, but it isn't listed under /cache/ in the root directory. OTAs seem to be tied to Google Play Services now--so that's why I'm asking. I can't find an apk responsible for updating other than Play Services.
Thank you!

Jeez.
Verizon must approve the 5.1 update, before Google can push it to Verizon phones.
edit.. And apparently they have. Verizon phones are getting the OTA
But merely disabling playstore auto updates won't stop ota from vzw so how do you block it?

I don't understand why you need to block it. Just ignore it until you're ready to do something else to update. Is it really that much of an issue?
So no way to block vzw ota. OK. Used to just freeze otacert
Lol...first world problems.

OK, will blocking playstore app updates prevent google ota from downloading onto phone? I always block app updates anyway. I only update apps if they don't work.

Clever, its best to have the oldest apps versions on your phone so you will not be bothered with improvements in functionality, quality, security and other options. Too bad Cupcake is no longer available for you

Is there a way to stop Software Update on stock firmware?

The last time we got an update I had to say remind me later multiple times...eventually I went to sleep just to wake up and find out my phone was updated without my permission.

You can disable it with BK disabler.
Have you tried This? What services would I need to disable?

Using it now.
Just go to the system tab and disable the blue coloured software update with BK disabler. Done.
Can't find a link to the app.
Is there a way to manually do it through settings?

Yeah me neither lol. Just disable options through settings -> software update. It might still eventually push updates after a while though. Long-term you can disable Software update with Titanium Backup if rooted, or else use BK Package Disabler as described earlier.
what if you enable them back but when checking for a software update it just says "up to date", i am running the Nov 1st security patch, have had updates disabled since i use Sub overlays and have a custom ui, just tonight i went and u installed everything bcuz i heard there was a security patch out that was needed n order to get Oreo later this month..i know for a fact my phone isnt up to date.
anyone know what is going on??
my provider is AT&T, any help would b appreciated.
btw..i am NOT rooted or running any custom roms.
Just use bk disabler, disable everything related to software updates, this prevents even the forced updates that sometimes samsung or carriers push, when you re enable all, if there is some update, yo will be able to install it
yeah, using the app is no problem..it's when i enable the updates again thru BK my phone is saying its up to date and i know for a fact it is like 4 security patches behind..i have no idea how to fix it.
i enabled all apps including the update ones, uninstalled BK also.

You are just awesome, pretty and simple. Thank you so much.
For those who do not understand you need activate Developers Options (google it)
Then in Developers Option, uncheck Auto Update System.
I have had this checked from the start and still get update notifications?
