Hey everyone (particularly those I previously interacted with in the - now much less active - Note 3 forum )
My fist post in this forum signifies... pretty much a complete 180 wrt my interest in the Note 4, altering it from "ehh, no thanks" to "I wonder if the Tmo store down the street has any in stock?"
First, my current Note 3: I freaking love it, easily my #1 fav out of the many phones I've owned. It's running Tweaked 3.9, leanKernel 3.11.3 and themed with @cbucz24's B&W Tweaked theme and a sick themed stock Samsung keyboard that he made. Run's like a dream (Antutu benchmarks always in the mid 40k's with an all time high of about 47.5K), Nova Prime, any otherwise heavily customized software-wise (most significant example: I've basically totally altered the stock S pen function via GMD S-pen / no auto Air Command, but launch-able via GMD and significant progress towards my goal of doing literally anything (access obscure settings / direct dial, etc.) just by scribbling a path on the screen. Also, froze flashbar service, replaced with sidebar launchers of Flppr - access pre-configured widgets, divided into categories, from ANY screen via swipe gestures (awesome in general, but particularly useful for "remotes" such as Smart Remote, Yatse, Ultimate Remote...), OmniSnitch (grabbed from the ROM flashed on my "week or so NEW" Note 10.1 2014, T-mo lte variant (p607t, which is actually just a carrier branded P605 - international lte variant, thus completely compatible with p605 ROMs :good, and PIE. Last example (maybe most significant) example, replaced Pen Window, which is rather slow, clunky, and functionally limited AND split window with the far superior XHalo module. Really the only "native" function that I use is handwriting recognition, which IMO works amazingly well). Also, I'm pretty good storage-wise, with the 32GB internal, a 64GB external (must have root app: FolderMount!) AND a few of those tiny USB / USB OTG drives - two of them being USB 3 / 64 GB (but the first Corsair one I got was "misplaced" (read: very likely lost forever) - replaced it with the equivalent Patriot drive which has the fastest transfer speeds I've EVER seen on a flash drive, but via PC USB 3 and phone micro usb 2! Oh, last thing, tons of accessories, most of which incompatible with the Note 4 (ex. cases... so many cases! and a micro USB 3 4 port hub).
So while, having the 'old' JUMP program and not yet using it, it makes more "sense" to trade my Note 3 for a 4, then do the same when this period of "transitional" phone releases passes, and the 64-bit "phone of my dreams" (yes, to confirm, phone ownership CAN affect sleep ) becomes available. However, given my exceptional "fondness" for my N3 & it's extensively customized tweaks, I am somewhat concerned about ditching it for its (currently, at least) less customizable successor.
Keeping my N3 AND getting an N4 really is not an option - I don't really have the cash to buy it straight up, and wouldn't be particularly compelled to if I did. However, having the 'old' JUMP, which I haven't yet used, I feel like, logically, I should go for upgrade 1 of 2 / year, and swap the N3 for a 4, which would be sort of a "transitional" device, until something that I NEED to have released.
SO Note 4 owners (JUMPers... first and last time I'll ever be using that adjective ), where any of you in a similar situation, but decided to go for it anyways? Are you happy to have done so? Any regrets?
Last (any peripheral) question: is anyone aware of the current availability of the N4? Is it typically available in stores yet (particularly in Chicago - the store near me is in Lincoln Park on Clark, if I have any neighbors around here )? Or is the best (fastest) way to JUMP via ordering online (if so, would it be a pre-order and if so, how long of a delay should be expected?) I do know a really cool / helpful guy at the T-mo store (who I talked EXTENSIVELY about root etc., explicitly making sure the new tablet wasn't locked down before buying it, and even straight up asking him if he thought that it would be cool to flash alternative firmware on my new deposit-less AC1900 if I flashed it back to stock before returning it, to which he surprisingly responded "yeah, I'm pretty sure that's fine"!) so he could possibly help me out if availability is still an issue (he also ordered a LTE booster, sent to my house, since I told him I wanted both but was told I could only have one or the other shipped. Paid the deposit for that one, but just got tracking info: delivery date = tomorrow )
So I can / plan to roll by the store to check it out, but just wondering if anyone has bought / ordered one recently and has any info re: current availability.
Really looking forward to discussing / exploring the mod potential for this device with you all! Thanks in advance - mostly hoping to resolve the matters that are making me hesitant to JUMP over to this device and it's MUCH more active discussion :good:
For me, the Note 4 is everything I've ever wanted in a phone (minus dual front facing speakers, but oh well)
I LOVED my Note 3. LOVED it. It was hands down the best device I've ever owned. Until now. I didn't use my JUMP (even though I have JUMP 1.0) kept the Note 3 so I could give it to my friend who would never be able to afford a beastly phone like that.
The Note 4 is the best phone money can buy right now (IMHO). No regrets, and I got it on release day. I baby it and it already has a couple of minor scratches on the aluminum bezel but I could care less. I never dropped it, ever, and I'm ultra careful with my phones (the Note 3 is still flawless, I mean literally looks brand new). So keep that in mind, you will get scratches on the bezel, but honestly even with that, still THE best phone in the world.
That tweaked 3.9 is a GREAT rom, but the note4 is an all around better device. Battery life, camera focus speed, processor speed (once tweaked a little), and the s-pen does function better.
And that fast charger makes anything else obsolete. Charging to 75-90% in 1hr is just crazy.
Screen is pretty nice too
I was pretty bummed about the rear speaker, and the non wolfson dac, but I guess only a few media people even care about sound quality lol.
If it's a stretch money wise, just skip this iteration, it's improved but not mind blowing
Hey thanks a lot man! Just called the store, and the guy made it pretty clear that online order was the way to go (specifically, they had one white one at 6PM Thurs., and he said it'd likely be gone within 10 mins!) Additionally, with the online JUMP, I have 30 days to give my N3 a :crying: proper goodbye  )
I'm going to go ahead and find + order a case (slim but protective w/ built in port covers / tempered glass saver. Would welcome recommendations on that :highfive:

Ah yes, the speaker; meant to address that. Placement / quality of a device's speaker(s) is probably the lowest priority criteria for device selection. By that I mean, if I'm doing anything on the phone where I care about sound quality (media, gaming (occasionally, but not usually), pretty much anything aside from ring / notification tones) I'm going to be connecting either headphones, APTX BT speaker, or even my 7.1 AVR. Any of those is going to produce better sound than even the best built in speakers on any mobile device, for which I would do the same. The lack of the Wolfson DAC is a drag or rather a "wtf sammy".
Situation seems to be that N4 is unquestionably "better" overall than the N3, and I basically have the choice of walking around with one or the other in my pocket, or burning 1/2 JUMP upgrades. Now that development for this phone has picked up, it seems to me that grabbing an N4 vs. holding onto my N3 would be an "emotional rather than logical" decision.
When you get your phone, you will love it. I switched from an AT&T S3 to this T-Mobile N4. A tad pricey, but oooh so worth it. I've wanted a Note phone for years and I finally have one. I'm tempted to root and tweak but worried about tripping Knox and any unforseen warranty hassles.
Anyway, glad you love your N3. Hope the N4 is everything you want it to be.

Cool story bro. So cool I couldnt finish it.
Yup
I thought i was the only one,
The UI feels a bit clunkier And the battery life isnt nearly as good for me as a heavy user i could get almost a full day and a half, on the note 4 i might get barely a day same use.
If i couldve taken the note 3 software multi window UI and put it in the note 4 body it would be the perfect phone.

I have to agree. Turned my note 3 on last night to play with it and it's smooth. Still on stock rooted and animation is smoother with less lag.
Battery on my note 4 i would say lasts 15% less. I've only disconnected my phone for 5 hours with 2:15 screen time and I'm already at 55%. I'm losing about an hour total screen time compared to my note 3.

Yes, Note 4 is worth the JUMP....
I loved my Note 3, but I love my Note 4 more.
There are only two things that I miss about my Note 3.
Temperature sensor
Humidity sensor
If none of these matter to you, the Note 4 is a no brainer. Even if those things mattered to you (like it matters to me ) the Note 4 is still a no brainer.
Those are great AnTuTu benchmakrs for the Note 3, but the SD800 in the N3 is no comparison to the N4 SD805. If you look in my sig, I've hit 50K+ on stock kernel running FireKatv2.
JUMP on over! :good:
I'd like to ask those who own the new Nexus 6 device:
1. Which features does the Nexus 6 have that other devices don't have?
For example, on the hardware part, I've noticed that it has front speakers and also double tapping to wake the device (while its screen is turned off), but are there any other goodies that I've probably missed from articles?
2. Which features do you miss from other devices?
I find it a bit disappointing that for a large screen, Google didn't add features that can take advantage of it (like the Note series) .
I'm just curious about your opinions, and also about what special features it got (other than long support, like other Nexus devices) .
Double Tap to Wake is not an existing feature.
For me the key selling points are the Moto X form factor, qHD display, 3GB of RAM and the size of the device paired with Android 5.0 and the 805 chipset.
Im sure Ambient Display will be a nice touch to the amoled screen and the new smart lock feature of lollipop for those with trusted bluetooth or nfc devices.

IR Blaster. I used that all the time on my M7. Not a huge deal, just convenient.
Have no idea until we get the Nexus6 in our hands...

Double tap isn't available?
I thought it's there, as this website says:
"Where supported by the hardware, your device will wake up as soon as you pick it up or tap the screen twice"
Odd. Maybe it's a hidden feature, or something that will be possible via root?

Its available for the Nexus 9 because its made by HTC. It was confirmed via google by the original review that Double Tap to Wake is not an implemented feature for this device. It was ambient display kicking in when it sensed the phone moving.

for me:
disadvantages
1. 64gb maximum storage space. ok, i get it...no sdcard slot. then at least offer a 128gb option. because sticking in a 64gb sdcard to a device was already pretty standard ...a couple years ago. these days people are using 128gb cards. and this doesn't even count the phone's internal storage.
even apple has bumped up to 128gb. i get that 64gb is more than what was originally offered on nexus phones...but the nexus6 also costs a heck of a lot more to the end-user.
2. questionable availability of wired hdmi mirroring. lots of speculation on this...but if it doesn't have it...
i can accept the lack of other device-specific features...like active stylus, ir blaster, heartrate monitor, various camera functions...but something as basic as large storage capacity and wired hdmi mirroring (possibly) should be in line with a "vanilla" flagship phone.
Advantages:
*Optimized software. A big plus if coming from a Samsung galaxy device. Like a HUGE plus.
*Fast updates
*Completely unlocked (bootloader included) if buying form GP. I can't think of a reason why anyone would buy from their carrier?
*Motorola signal quality. Their devices always have the best signal reception.
Disadvantages:
*Lack of Super AMOLED? I don't know, maybe this is just a gripe?
*No SD card slot. Yeah this sucks.

for #2... with the Nexus 4 and 5 supporting SlimPort HDMI output.... i'd find it very odd if the Nexus 6 didn't. GSMArena also shows it supporting it.
As for #1.... not everyone finds that to be a disadvantage. The only people i can see using 128GB of storage, be it built-in or expanded, are those who either love to have a library of music on their phone at all times, or those who horde EVERYTHING (Apps, pictures, etc...) on their phone. For me, i would have liked to have been able to order the 64GB model... but seeing as i've been getting along just fine with my 16GB Nexus 5 for the past year.... 32GB isn't a bad idea either, and wasn't going to pass up on the opportunity of ordering one simply because of storage space. And if i NEED storage.... well.... that's what a 64GB USB-OTG flash drive is for.

I thought all the versions (Play & T-Mobile) of the Nexus 5 were unlocked?
Way too many advantages so I won't list any, lol.
As for disadvantages:
No SD slot (but that was expected...),
No Super AMOLED (also expected as Samsung wouldn't hurt their own sales-Note4),
No IR (I have smart TVs, my Note 3 is able to control them over both IR and WiFi since they are Samsung TV also)
No cool accessories at all! All those (SLIM) wallet cases and digital ink cases for Samsung and HTC devices, plus things like Gear VR
No physical camera button... I mean... with a phone that size... I'm pretty sure they had enough space for a camera shutter button...
Not completely waterproof certified, it annoys me because it seems like all they had to do was block the open ports (Charger and headphone)!!
I know that seems like a lot of disadvantages but I was just thinking of The Perfect Phone...which will never exist, lol. All in all, I am very excited to get my hands on the Nexus 6

I hope they are. I was also referring to sim locked, which we know AT&T will do.
I have a harmony hub setup. No need for IR

Afaik super amoled is just a marketing term from samsung and it does not make a difference...
Summarising my thoughts on the device in comparison to other flagships:
Pros
- Android 5.0 & guaranteed timely future updates
- Large 6" screen in a decent slim bezel form factor
- Always on voice commands
- Dual front facing stereo speakers
- Build quality
- Great developer support
Cons/could have done better
- Mediocre-average battery life (especially for a phablet)
- High res screen comes at the cost of battery life, brightness and colour accuracy without tangible benefits over 1080P for most people
- Average middling camera
- No Snapdragon 810 = less future proofing and no 64bit android. Misses out on the 20nm processing which promises 40-50% better battery life with 50% better performance. S805 is old tech – last of the 28nm series which has been around since 2013. Heck with the availability issues anyway I'd much rather it launch in Jan-Feb and get S810.
- No SD storage
- Price – Google sold out to the US carriers which needed premium pricing to get it on their subsidised plans. Screws the rest of the world over though.
- Availability
- Nano sim – hardly the standard in the android world. Makes it hard to change between/from other devices/tablets
- Lack of Phablet customisations in the UI with no 3rd party alternatives currently through xposed.
Overall I'm pretty disappointed as it could have been so much more from both a HW and SW point of view. Definitely not a day 1 purchase for me, maybe in the future if the XZU 4 doesn't materialise/disappoints and we see more of a price drop.
Starting to lean towards waiting for maybe a Sony Xperia Z4/Z4 Ultra & other S810 device's announcemenst at CES 2015...
Don't have the phone yet, but for me,
Advantages: QHD screen, 3GB RAM, pure stock Android, Wireless Charging, Very easy to root
Disadvantages: 6" Screen. Just a little bit too much for me. The sweet spot for me is 5.2"-5.5". (But I'm sure I'll get used to it), front camera is still 2MP, and battery is 3220 mAh, but people are saying it only has around 5 hours of on screen time.
Advantages:
- Stock OS
- 3GB RAM
- Snapdragon 805
- 5.95inch screen
- No physical home buttons
Disadvantages:
- Relatively average battery (should've been 3500-3900mh ideally; it would've fit)
- Screen is ok, but nothing special (not as bright or vivid as iPhone 6+ or Note 4)
- Too thick (10.1mm at the thicket point), should've been thinner (7 to 8mm would be great)
- Cameras are average, an improvement from last year but nothing to write home about.
- Not 64-bit despite all the work that went into making the OS 64-bit ready (understable though due to processor releases).
- The fact that the Nexus 6 will not hold its ground as well as the Nexus 5 (which is still a good phone a year after release; the Nexus 6 will not likely be able to maintain the same longevity as the Galaxy S6 is out soon expected Snapdragon 810, 3-4GB RAM, even better display and cameras + bigger battery).
I don't yet have the device, but my initial thoughts mirror many on here. But I'd like to add two more disadvantages - no removable battery (surely this was expected, though). As a current G3 owner, having a spare battery with me when I know I'll be using my phone a lot while away from a charger is great. Also, current availability MUST be listed as a disadvantage. I'm ready to buy the 64GB model right now and the longer I have to wait the better the chance is I'll move on and wait for something else.
From 1-10, what you gonna rate the oneplus and the note 9?
7, would be higher if it had a headphone jack, sd card slot and or stereo speakers. The Note 9 has all of those.

8 Because of the blazingly fast speed and updates though i like this in display fingerint scanner its fine OOS is like stock android i like stock android samsung experience has slow updates and too many bloatwares no headphone jack is fine for me i dont listen to music so much small notch i like it.
I prefer the 6T so I'll give it an 11. The size and weight of the phone feels better in my hand, I do fewer misclicks with a flat panel compared to infinity display, quick updates and the 6T is faster than the Note 9 at just about everything.
Headphone jack I wish was there but that battery life makes up for it. I'd also like wireless charging but again when I have 40% left at the end of the day, who needs charging.
10, due to the fact that the oneplus 6t's OS is near stock , frequent updates , better hardware and mainly the amazing battery life.
20 , wouldn't touch Samsung with a stick

I don't really get people complaining about no SD card slot. Base model has 128GB of storage and you can get 256GB model for a lower price than the Note 9. I mean, there's no way you're going to fill all this space (unless you REALLY want to). Internal storage is also faster.
As for a score- 8. 6T isn't without flaws and compromises, but it's also incredible at what it does, especially if you consider the price.. If I could get Google Play Edition of the Note 9 that would be no brainier.

What you call bloatware is what I miss on the OnePlus.
Samsung ecosystem is so great, that's what I'm really missing compared to my s9 (don't own note 9).

I have to admit that between stock android and TouchWiz, I much preferred stock but after testing the One UI, even though it's heavier than stock, I actually like it. At least you don't need so many duplicate apps as Samsung allows you not to install its own app if you prefer to use Google's
Op 6T for "
- price, cca. 1/2 of note 9
- hardware. Allmost the same, with More ram
- software. It's the second phone after Google to get Android updates.
I had the note 8 and love my 6T. I will give it an 8.
The only thing that I wish the 6t had would be stereo speakers.

Yes, this, absolutely. Watching a video without headsets on the 6T is was makes me miss the Note 9 the most. That sound is horrible.
I'll take the 6T over the Note 9 (I came from a Note 8) any day of the week and twice on Sunday, because:
1. Price
2. Specs
3. Battery life
4. Updates
5. Root
6. No bloat/close to stock Android experience
This is a true flagship phone at midrange price. I thought I'd miss wireless charging, SD card, and headphone jack, but I dont. I'm a fairly heavy user and I'm usually between 40-60% battery left at the end of the day with 6 hours of SOT. When you couple all those things together, the 6T is a slam dunk.

You obviously don't travel much. When I travel, much of the time there is little to no internet access. So streaming, downloading and watching movies becomes quite difficult since there's little to no internet access and what there is charges for it or you must share free internet with 1000s of other users, which also opens up all sorts of other problems. Having games, videos and movies pre-downloaded to SD cards, allow me to swap out things quite easily without loading up my phones memory. This also is financially better for me, as I don't need to purchase the more expensive model with more storage and can use that additional money on my trip for other things. Bottom line, it makes life easier.

Memory card does have advantages, I like the Note 9's hybrid SIM setup (two SIMs or one SIM and one memory card). I personally have a hard time using even a quarter of the 128gb I have on the 6T. Went to Vegas recently, I think I put 8 movies on the phone to have plenty of entertainment and I'm not even sure that used more than 15% of the storage.

Nice assumption first of all.
I travel to places where I'll be able to have a decent internet access or to places where I don't need it that much. And even if I did...256GB of movies and games? What are you watching and where? If I'm planning to watch a movie on a trip I'm going to bring my laptop with me and not watch it on 6-ish inch screen.
MicroSD Cards (apart from the most expensive ones) also are almost certain to give user a headache while recording [email protected] video...on a trip for example.
I'm not trying to offend you or assume you don't need. Just saying that the need to have more than 256GB of storage on a mobile phone is a niche at best. To the point where OEMs don't even bother. They can spend their time, effort and space for something different, not a feature that is not going to drive the sales one bit.
I don't go for the flashy/trendy things. For the past 4 years, I've been quite happy with the Huawei phones,
after the problems I had with the OnePlus One. Now that the Huawei phones won't really have any love for
the USA market (understandable), gave the OP phone another look. One of my coworkers bought the 6 and
has had zero trouble, so I got the 6T about 3 weeks ago. They have obviously improved. Build quality, finish
is better than the OnePlus One. Receiving the updates in a timely manner is another thing.
Camera for my use is good enough. If I want a quality photo, I'll just use my real camera. But, the camera is
adequate for snapshots, and good lighting photos. I use 3 camera apps. Open camera if I'm in a hurry, Camera FV-5
if I want to really get a good photo, and the pixel 3 camera app that works for the OP6T in low light.
I just don't see the justification for spending 800-1000 dollars for a phone, that for most, will keep maybe 24-36 months.
But, it's a free thing...buy what you want.

If you travel for work, you do not have the luxury to determine your internet capabilities. Also, when you are flying or in the airport, you may not have access for as much as a full day.
I have both and swap back and forth. I am leaning more to the 6t due to form factor, battery and speed.
Note 9 for sound, memory card support and camera.
One plus gets a 9 and note 9 a 8 or 8.5 if half scores are acceptable.
hello,
I like to ask which one will you recommend for me.
The phone that I will be using is for typical uses. I will keep the phone for the next 3-4 years ( my current phone is an LG v20, which is fantastic but it showing it age). I don't live in the USA, so I don't care too much about the band as both support all the bands in my country. The headphone and micro SD ( for Micro SD. It 50/50) is essential for me. I don't want to change to Bluetooth. My priorities are performance > audio > battery > screen > repairability > camera > updates > gimmicks (wireless charging).
or do you have any other phone in the same price range?
Some question.
How good is the DAC on the Asus Rog Phone 2?
Will 512GB be enough? ( i love my 512GB micro SD card, and I don't know if I can live without them)
Thank you
or should I wait for next year phones?
I'm also on a V20 and the ROG II is the only phone that's really excited me without too many tradeoffs. The lack of SD card support doesn't bother me much with the amount of internal storage it has (and the coming 1TB version coming soon). What really turns me off from the Zenphone 6 (and most current phones) is this insane trend towards zero bezels.

yeah, same with me, like give some bezels with dual front-facing speakers and place where I can rest my palm without covering the screen. (I HATE NOTCHES, TEARDROPS, AND PUNCH HOLES)
should I wait for next year's phones or get the rog 2? (my rooted + modded LG v20 is still going strong)
I liked LG idea of dual screen but I can't stand the notch.
If you're still happy with the V20, I'd stick with it. It's still the most complete package when you compare features. The only reason I'm looking to upgrade is because my back camera lens cover came off and now the lenses are getting scratched up. I'm still up in the air if I want to repair them. If I decide to pull the trigger on the ROG II, then it would be pointless. But I may do it anyway just because of the awesome camera and app it has. Lol
So ever since the whole Huawei debacle started I have been eying a new phone. I originally got my Mate 10 Pro due to it's mix of specs and affordability, and I have been quite happy with it. However the lack of a possibility for me to unlock the bootloader and subsequently root and flash the thing is proving to be quite the annoyance. Especially considering the precarious position Huawei is in regards to what can and can't be used from American companies.
So with that in mind, I am keeping my eyes open for a new phone. It doesn't have to be the latest model and if in good condition I might even consider buying used (though a used one would get a thorough bath in alcohol for peace of mind). Especially considering that I am more than happy with the current specs of my phone and would be happy with something of similar or better performance. Do you guys have any ideas on what models would be best to look at for a wide following on the forum and in terms of the ability to root and install custom roms? I have been looking at the obvious answers such as Google Pixel phones so far, and I understand that Oneplus are well liked.
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
A quick summary of my current phone specs (of which a new phone has to be either equivalent or better):
- 1080x2160 resolution
- 6gb ram (4gb is probably fine though)
- 128gb storage (if the alternative has an SD card slot I will be fine with 64gb)
- Kirin 970 SOC (Geekbench score: SC:355 MC:1371)
- Decent 12MP camera (the MP is inconsequential, but an ok camera would be nice)
- 6" screen (Mainly I can't go above roughly 75mm width on the phone, and anything below 5" would be small)
