I'm no noob, I've been rooting for a while, but I can't figure out how to root this damn thing . On a Nexus, I just unlocked, flashed TWRP, then flashed superuser from TWRP, and I was done. How does it work on this phone? Can I just flash TWRP and then from TWRP flash a root zip? I'd rather not use any toolkits and such (which seem to be all the rage on this forum). Running Pure edition btw. On latest Lollipop OTA.

Yes its pretty much the same, the forums are abit immature at the moment there aernt any proper guides, i just did things the Nexus way
unlock your bootloader first through motorola, following the instructions (make sure there are no spaces in the unlock key): https://motorola-global-portal.custhelp.com/app/standalone/bootloader/unlock-your-device-a
flash twrp, then install the superSU zip from adb sideload or from your internal storage if it was already downloaded
youre done
also, you could flash the stock logo image to remove the warning boot image, http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-2014/development/warning-message-unlocked-bootloader-t2871478 to make things look nicer

Awesome, thanks. Looks like that's what I'll end up doing. I really messed up my phone though when trying to get back to stock. Hopefully my stock image request will be approved soon and I'll be able to go through the process again.

One more question, if I kinda messed up restoring everything to 4.4.4, but I can boot the phone properly, will updating to 5.0 via an OTA update fix any mistakes I made along the way?

Not necessarily. The ota contains only changed files (not all files) and therefore if something is wrong with a file that wasn't changed (including anything in /data) then it will still be broken after the update.

Alright. Do you know of any way to return to stock without going through Motorola's waiting game. It's been a few hours now and I still haven't been approved for the download.

Honestly, I haven't looked at what options are available for images to flash.
When I asked for firmware, I believe that I asked on a Friday evening and received access on the following Monday morning. So maybe you'll get access in another 15-16 hours? That is your safest bet if your phone is working well enough to last you until then.

Nexus 6 - Running 5.1.1 able to be unlocked?

Hi All,
I have just within the last few days received a brand new Nexus 6, did all updates and it is running 5.1.1. I have found multiple guides online in regards to rooting 5.0, but none of them have any reference to 5.1.1 (I assume because it is still fairly new). I would just like to make sure that the guides for 5.0 are still appropriate for 5.1.1 before I go ahead with the root, and will not brick my phone. (Would post link for the guide I was going to follow, but I have less than 10 posts)
If anyone could verify this for me, that would be awesome! As well, if anyone has any newer guide or anything else that I should know as I am starting from scratch with a new device, that would be great as well!

its all the same, for any nexus. 1. unlock the bootloader via fastboot. 2. flash twrp recovery via fastboot. 3. flash the latest supersu in your new recovery. 4. reboot, with your bootloader unlocked and with root.

Help Rookie - Which Nexus 6 Root Method is Best?

Hello,
So I am still newer to the Android / Modding world (Had my Nexus 6 for about 3 weeks now, first Android phone). The extent of my experience is manual flashing 6.0 to my Nexus 6 and Nexus Player and flashing custom recoveries and boot images. I am a bit confused right now. I seen a post in the XDA News that you can now root 6.0 without modifying /system. I thought that was already the case when rooting the Nexus 6? All you had to do is flash TWRP, flash the modified boot image, and install SuperSU through TWRP. There appears to be two different root methods now. Could someone please clarify what the difference is and which I should go with? Here is the link to the XDA Post from Chainfire on the rooting methods.

3. flash any marshmallow custom kernel(if on marshmallow) and the latest supersu in your new twrp recovery

Thank you for the info but I do know this. I have done this already. I am trying to understand how doing this modifies the system. How does this method differ from the newer method that has been posted? I am trying to learn all I can about Android, Root, etc. I have learned so much already in a very short time. I would like someone to explain the differences in / in the outcome of these two methods. I don't want to be a noob forever here. lol. Thank You.

There is no difference in the outcome. Root merely lets one modify files (root files) that you could not before. It does not put anything else on your device.

there is no other way to root a nexus.
whichever method you choose to root a nexus with, even a root toolkit, they all do it the exact same way.

/system is always modified by root. You need the su binary and scripts to call it in /system. You have to add these files to get root access and adding files counts as a modification. You cannot root any phone without this.

Root without TWRP on OnePlus 3T?

Hey Guys,
I have a small question.
My OnePlus 3t is unlocked and I have the original recovery from OnePlus.
(don't ask. I had some problems rooting my device.)
I saw an article about it and it say that if I want to root my device, I don't need to install the "no-verity-opt-encrypt" because the newest SuperSu "UPDATE-SuperSU-v2.79-20161211114519" can do it too.
Can I use the original Recovery from OnePlus to install SuperSu?
Do I really need TWRP?
I know I can't do backups but I can install things from the internal storage.
I hope you can help me.

You need TWRP if you wanna flash something that isn't "Oneplus certified". Basically, if it ain't stock, use TWRP. SuperSU fits in the category of " non stock" so TWRP is needed. I rooted my HTC one M8 twice and it works fine. The no Verity encrypting thing confused me a bit. I got a bootloop three times in a row.

Canadian P20 Pro version CLT-L04, Questions about Magisk and bootloader unlock

Hi! I picked up my Canadian P20 Pro last week and couldn't be happier. It's been many years since I've owned a rootable device though and a lot has changed! I've done my best to read through all the guides for rooting the P20 Pro and it's only lead to further confusion as there seem to be many recent advancements. There seem to be a lot of different versions of this phone too. So I have some questions I'm hoping someone can answer easily! Let's assume my bootloader is already unlocked....
1) there's a really great guide on rooting the P20 Pro using All In One tool. But that requires flashing TWRP to achieve root using Magisk. I do not require TWRP as I only want root and do not wish to flash any roms.
a) is there a way to root with Magisk and NOT flash TWRP? I can't seem to find a straight answer on this...
b) failing that, can TWRP safely be removed and keep root afterward?
2) after unlocking the bootloader I was welcomed by a terrifyingly orange warning about my now 'unsafe' phone. I've read mixed things on hiding this. Is there currently a way to hide it?
3) how does the process work for OTA updates on an unlocked bootloader assuming there is no TWRP? I've read differing opinions on the necessity of flashing a no_check.img to the ramdisk and have no understanding of the new security checks on these phones. Can I run risk of bricking my phone through an automated update?
Ultimately I'm scared of forgetting TWRP is on my phone and accepting an update that'll brick it. Any information is welcome as are similar questions!

I am also curious if there is a good root process for this phone. Find anything yet?

I have a Canadian CLT-L04 that i rebranded and rooted to CLT-L29 with the guide on here.

if you want better firmware compared to version 109 thats still on clt-l04 you can follow this guide, it worked well for me. (don't wait canadian OTA it'll take too long)
1) quite sure that TWRP is the easiest and safest way to root. Currently unaware of a better way to root the phone.
b) if you remove TWRP by flashing a stock recovery_ramdisk, root is kept. If you do an OTA though you might lose root.
2) thats here to stay i believe. Cannot find a way to hide it currently.

I finally found the info I needed in this thread:

Overall it was a very simple process and took less than an hour including reading. Once you've got your bootloader unlock code the all in one tool handles it from there. Unlock the bootloader, flash TWRP, reboot into TWRP, flash Magisk and you're done. You can flash the no_check file over TWRP if you want to be ready for updates but I decided to leave TWRP on for now. Loving having root on this phone so far!

On a different note, has anyone discovered any ROMs for this phone yet that can handle the notch? I almost tried Lineage until I found out there is no notch support. I've grown strangely fond of the thing for some reason lol

If you do a full backup of the L04 in TWRP before rebranding you should be able to go back to it easily at any time, just remember to save it somewhere safe other than the phone itself. If you've already flashed and are looking to go back you may find someone willing to share a stock backup if you ask around. But always best to do your own backup first, then you can go back whenever you like!

Im scared to update before unlocking and rooting as the update might do something to fastboot etc. (this has happened to LG)

It's really easy to update once you've unlocked, I would suggest unlocking first if you have concerns. I have an L04 as well and just updated to 120 with no problems.

I have only rooted one phone before in my life so I am no expert. I do no want to mess up my phone becuse it is the only one that I have. Also If I unlock the boot loader and rebrand can i get OTAs and the upcoming Pie release? Thanks for the help!

LineageOS 15.1 on L04
I installed LineageOS 15.1 on my L04 with out any issue. Some things to consider. USB-C will only charge the device, Titanium Backup will install but doesn't get root access and you'll miss the camera application.

Did you install it with a locked bootloader ? I really dont feel like paying for an unlock code. Would like to try Lineage though.

I do have an unlocked bootloader. Truth is i'm addicted to Rom's lol. That in mind I have tried every Rom, kernel, flash-able zip within this Forum and I can't brick this thing. L04 Canadian. Lineage is the best Rom for our device.
Roms that work:
- Lineage - Hauwei camera can be installed and works, dark mode works well.
------- Doesn't work: USB-C audio, NFC, RAW Option in the camera, Second ear piece as speaker, main speaker works well.
- First Ever Android 9 - Being the first build it works well. (Note: When I installed this rom I never installed the RemoveEncryption-P20Pro.zip) Seemed to work just fine without it. I did run it just because I wanted to see if it would brick my phone. It didn't.
-------Doesn't work: Dark mode, NFC, RAW Option in camera, Second ear piece as speaker, main speaker works well, seems to kill TWRP. eRecovery needed to get TWRP to function.
- AOSP 9 - Berkeley-Flex - Do Not Use...not ready.

What did you use to unlock your bootloader ? Funky ? Also I know what you mean I am addicted to Roms as well :laugh: Thanks for all the info I really appreciate it.
