Order of things to be done - unlocking/flashing etc

I intend to create a post with how to do things on this phone.
Just bought the 64GB Black.
So, trying to pull the order of things to be done.
Please help, this is for newbies.
When you receive it. What should be done first? (and how did you do it???)
(EDIT : I will update this as I find things out.)

If you own the Mi5, how did you go about it? Any tips? What went wrong? How did you fix?

First I unlocked my bootloader, which is essential to do first. Then I flashed TWRP using the ADB terminal thing on my computer via USB. After I had TWRP, I rooted my phone using SuperSU. But I was bored of MIUI so I flashed Cyanogenmod 13 in the thread in the MI 5 ROM forum. I have not changed anything since then really, I'm using the root that comes with CM now. It's all really good.
Edit: make sure you flash google apps at the SAME TIME as cyanogenmod! Without booting in between! Also the snapchat camera doesn't work right now for CM but if you use the app casper.io (not on play store, google it) you can use the phones camera app and then it works fine.

Which TWRP did you use (link?)
Which GApps did you use? (Nano, pico, stock etc) and presumably ARM64?

since there isn't a sdcard, are you able to do a full backup so you can revert back to if you have second thoughts. I guess you have to do a full wipe prior to flashing e.g CM13

Questions about rooting
Hey I got a Mi5 64GB with unlocked bt and twrp installed.
Now I want to root the device but when I boot to twrp I can't flash files because the device is encrypted by default and in order to decrypt it I need to perform a full wipe or enter a password, I don't know the password because it's not a password I decided on, I don't really have a problem doing a full wipe I don't have any important data.
But here are my questions:
1. If I'll do a full wipe will I have to install MiUi and twrp again?
2. Right now if I connect my phone to my PC using USB when it's in recovery mode I can't use MTP and if I'll perform a full wipe the SuperSU.zip will get deleted from my device and I will have to get it back to the device somehow and I can't because I can't use MTP when I'm in recovery mode. So I thought maybe after the full wipe I will be able to use MTP on recovery maybe I can't because it's encrypted at the moment?

GApps - http://opengapps.org/ (ARM64) I used microG instead of gapps to save a lot of battery. (You can google it if you want)
It doesn't really matter what GApps do you use, although I'd go for nano/pico. I wouldn't want all the GApps to be my system apps.

1. You just need to format data, your system partition will not be wiped. You will just lose everything except the system.
2. You probably will be able to use MTP, although I'm not but other people are so you should too. If you don't, you'll need to go to advanced in TWRP, enter adb sideload and sideload the zip.

my experience is very good .ive rooted the phone and flashed also adblock gps is working good internet very fast lte for the price just amazing

After Update Bootloop
After the 7.0 Update, i have an issue. If my Umi Plus is connected to my WLAN AP (with other devices no such error), it is rebooting every 10 seconds. If i turn my Access Point off, it stops rebooting itself and if i turn it on again, it is restarting after 5 seconds over and over again. My mobile carrier internet works fine, without any such errors.
I dont want to use my mobile carrier with limit, but my home wlan.
Anyone has similiar issues? If anyone knows the solution please write it

So far so good. Android 7 has made a big improvement to my Super.

Root is possible using TWRP 3.0.2 for umi.
I've attached a zip file of the TWRP version below, unzip it and flash using SPT flashtool, you need to untick all the other boxes and just tick the recovery and direct it to where you unpacked the zip file.
I've also attached the Super su i used to root the beta 2 for the umi super. Flash it in TWRP.

No worries. There's no need to wipe anything after you flashed Supersu in TWRP. One of the best things about Nougat 7 is that it use a different file system then Lollipop and Marshmallow, so you will never again sit and wait while the OS optimize apps (sometimes hundreds if you had a lot of apps installed!!) Just reboot after flash and you good to go. The first boot might bootloop once or twice, no need to do anything it will di everything on its own. Enjoy full root mate.

Quick question - I've only flashed recoveries using adb before, how do I point SPFlashTool at the recovery .img file?
Do I replace the recovery.img file inside the UMI ROM folder, with the TWRP .img file?
And then tick 'Recovery' inside SPFlashTool per your instructions?

That's correct, you browse the img file on the ticket recovery (the only one that should be ticked.) click on "download only" while your phone is switched off and then connect it through the usb. It will then flash TWRP and let you know when its done. Now disconnect your phone and hold in power button and volume up simultaneously. When you see the umi logo let go of the power button but keep holding volume up. When you see the TWRP logo you can let go. The first time you boot into TWRP you need to swipe the bar which will allow modifications, you will only have to do that once, the system will then remember it. Good luck and happy rooting.

Hmm, this is odd though. I managed to get TWRP flashed but whenever I flash that SuperSU and reboot, all my apps complain and keep quitting when I try to launch them. I've been careful to wipe cache after flashing, as usual.
In fact I've rried wiping everything cache, dalvik, - even started again from an entirely factory-wiped device, including data.
Flashed a fresh copy of the Nougat beta ROM, booted up fine. Flashed TWRP, booted up fine but then I reboot to recovery, flash SuperSU and bingo - on my next reboot all the apps starts complainin that they have stopped - even Launcher.
Weird...

That's very odd. I used the exact same supersu myself and never encountered that problem. That version is also compatible with Nougat. Try one of the other versions on https://www.chainfire.eu/
Maybe that solves your problem.

I follow this procedure but I only obtain partial root. I cannot cut and paste in the system partition even though I can run some apks that require root. Is there a way I can obtain full root?

You have full root, you just don't know it.
If you want to edit anything in any system folders you need to change r, rw permissions. I use file explorer for this. Look at the attached SS to understand what I mean.

No, you need to flash beta 2 using SPFT, there is no zip file to use with TWRP for this.

I have a similar problems. However in my case many of the apk still working include play store. Just the apks that needs internet quit working.

Hello,
I have the problem that SPFT shows me 100% wehn I am flashing TWRP to the UMI Super but still hangs at 100% and does nothing more.
I'm using the Android N V7.01_20170123.
I also tried an Android scatter from Android 6 before I flashed Android 7, but it also doenst work.

OnePlus 3T Recovery Loop

Hello lovely XDA-members,
this morning a new OTA update/patch came out for my OnePlus 3T, so I downloaded and tryed to install it right away. My phone is rooted on android 7.0 and I have TWRP 3.0.3-0 installed as my recovery. Normally (when I updated to nougat) after downloading a new update the phone reboots itself into TWRP and installs the update by itself, but not this time. I had to seqrch through my phone and had to install thw update manually. After that I rebooted the phone and it started booting the TWRP recovery again, I tried it again and again and again, nothint changed. So I tried to restore my backup with everything functioning, but this wouldnt help either. :/ I read the few existing threads with this problem and heard of a recovery flag that isnt cleared and the bootloader being the problem. One solution that I found was only for an LG phone and I'm afraid that I'll brick my brand new phone I have absolutely no idea what to do now, I would be so happy if someone could help me with this :$

Encoutered the same problem. Either you reflash the official or twrp recovery (neither did the trick to me) or use this "emergency tool" (which helped me):

How you can ''unbrick it'':
1. Flash a any rom available for the oneplus 3t via twrp
a. after this you will be still in twrp bootloop, to solve this go to step 2
2. Flash back stock recovery via twrp
Now your system will boot again
Optional: Flash back twrp

Just flash stock recovery via adb and you're done. It will fix the problem, you won't lose any data

How To Guide [TWRP] MI 11 (Pro/Ultra) (mars/star)

[TWRP] MI 11 (Pro/Ultra) (mars/star)​
WARNING : I do not know who made this TWRP and I am NOT taking credit for it. It was posted on eu site and I'm just sharing since there was no thread for twrp here on xda.
INSTRUCTIONS
1. Before starting the process, the bootloader must be unlocked.
2. Install Xiaomi USB drivers.
3. Enable Usb debugging from Settings - Additional settings - developer options.
4. Download TWRP for Mi 11 (Pro/Ultra) , and put it in your fastboot folder.
5. Put your phone into fastboot mode.
6. Rename downloaded file to "twrp.img".
7. Do the following command. It will automatically boot into TWRP.
Code:
fastboot boot twrp.img
8. If you get a screen asking for a pin, press 2nd option
and change language to English then enter phone pin.
9. Change language to English (press the 6th option).
10. Go to "Advanced" and select "Onekey inject TWRP".
11. Swipe to inject the TWRP. It might take a few minutes, so don't worry.
Note
1) Don't change the boot slot, currently (Slot A) for most or your device will not boot at all.
2) For user experiencing decrypt issue, you can try one of the methods below to enable decryption:
a. Remove all your security eg. fingerprint, face unlock, pattern and leave ONLY pin. Reboot to twrp and try again.
b. Reflash twrp.
c. LAST RESORT! Format data and factory reset your device then reflash twrp.
3. For user experiencing decrypt issue but just want to flash latest build:
a. Boot to twrp > mount > mount usb storage then transfer your rom.zip to data/media/0
b. Now go to install and look for rom.zip under data/media/0. Profit!
4. The decrypt issue was a bug on the Chinese twrp, no update since may so don't ask for an ETA.

Yes, They just did the new stable in TWRP Format.

The Chinese exe worked for me this morning but after I installed it the phone didn't want to boot and I got stuck in twrp for awhile

Your device is not connected, hence the empty list after adb devices.
Did you enable USB debugging in Developer options?

Thx It's ok,I got it after a few attempts
The language on twrp still opens on Chinese and it needs changed to English each time but apart from that it seems to work fine!

mine was revoked after i flash the latest stable, just download magisk23.apk then rename it to magisk23.zip and flash thru twrp, got my root back that way, cheers

The recovery is fully functional as far as I can tell...
I did a complete backup successfully but I haven't tried to restore it yet

after a long day of learning the hard way (got stuck in Fastboot Loop) I am now on stable EU 12.5.7 (MI11 Ultra, EU phone). So far so good, but I was wondering, how can I make TWRP stuck to the phone, meaning, when I push the power button to have an option like: Boot into TWRP. Is that possible or is there a "click this button with this... trick"?
ATM, I can only get TWRP to work, when I enable it via PC, which is not good.
I am asking, because I have an old Oneplus 6, which has this option. TWRP is installed and I can boot directly to it, if I want to.
Can you please help me out? Is there a trick or am I doing something wrong?

I believe you are on custom EU rom right? Just reboot into recovery, custom eu rom injects twrp as standard recovery

Question [Solved] Help with fixing my phone back to Normal after playing with Roms & Twrp

Got the bootloader unlocked..should've read more & implemented over a proper guide.
long story short:
stared with magisk apk..when phone was fine.. then got into bootloop;
quickly downloaded & flashed the global (lime) MIUI V12.0.5.0.QJQMIXM;
installed twrp; should've done this before.
wasn't able to copy anything into internal storage.
Used Twrp to wipe phone.. & flashed the stock_global_miui_(lime)12.0.5 boot.img in fastboot
because twrp was saying "unable to decrypt fbe device" on internal storage
formatted using twrp.
booted properly but setup says device is locked because associated with existing mi account can't open wifi but was able to activate device upon entering password on mobile data setup completes but device restarts frequently & still unable to access wifi
I think it has something to do with "unable to decrypt fbe device"..
should I try flashing custom rom boot img?
please don't ban me..tell if I did something wrong, I'll correct that..

MiFlash-tool Worked
Flashing other compaitable custom Rom also worked
..
Had twrp wipe the whole phone and the format the partions
& then flashed in fastboot & everything was normal.
..
FBE device encryption is basically storage encryption that prevents dirty flashing miui rom via fastboot.
this can be avoided by implementing proper procedure of magisk & use of lazypatcher.

I will make another guide thread on rooting systemlessly & flashing other custom rooms... if I succeed I will link it here..

Try to reboot bootloader
then flash twrp
wipe everything and format the data partition
reboot to twrp again
then flash custom rom
If you're flashing miui again, your phone bootloader will be lock again and you need something like lazy2flasher if you wanna keep miui with twrp and magisk etc.

I found an article with lazy 2 flasher earlier, I'll look into it..
is there any where I should look to find a suited custom rom for my phone..

you can use custom rom from Poco M3 since it's used the same SoC (662)

where do I get lazy2flasher

If anything goes for me (RedmiNote9Pro) i just use miflash to flash original miui and start all over from there, might not be the quickest method but is easy and reliable

can it bypass dm verity as well? like does it apply flash without lazypatcher?
do we need to provide it rom or can it fetch itself?

If the bootloader unlocked and you can go into fastboot you can flash stock rom and It's just like it came from the store! Here you have link for your convinience: https://c.mi.com/oc/miuidownload/detail?guide=2

MiFlash-tool Worked..
(its the best tool for bringing mi devices from rom mess back to scratch new)
Flashing other Rom also worked..(pixelui)
juice = lime + citrus (works for both)
