Screen tint? - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hey,
my unit is yellow-ish, lighter on the top left corner. It gradients to pick towards the bottom right. (On whites and pastel colors, grays etc)
I visited my local O2 store, and their display unit had a similar situation - anyone else experiencing this?
With that said, I do know that AMOLED panels are not overly consistent. It just feels that this one I have on my OP3T is a bit more than it should be.

I have similar sitation

Mine is on the other side, but glad to see I am not alone. I've yet to see a perfect screen on any device i owned, and I think I am willing to accept this flaw for the price. Just curious as to whether it's wide spread. If it is there's no point in going in an RMA cycle

Seeing your issue, it is different to mine. I don't get an illuminated area on one part of my panel - merely AMOLED tint, not too different to the Pixel XLs and plenty of Galaxies I have seen. In fear I may end up getting something far worse I may end up keeping the phone

I got a Perfect screen this time

Same issue here. Colder bluish on the left side and the yellowish tint in the center.

Anyone has screen issue should upload photo of it

I have this also on the upper left side.

Those who claim a perfect screen. Do you suffer from. Screen OCD like the rest of us? I have had over 60 phones go through my hands in the last 2 years and i may have seen a perfect screen once or twice if so. Thanks for posting though. I would be more interested in seeing pictures from perfect screens.

Here the same. With light themes i dont see this or on white pages. Only on dark grey i can see the yellow tint. In Tapatalk dark theme i can see this every time.

damn this gets me worried. I've sent my OP3 back because of this issue and now i'm waiting for my 3T. Looks like the quality control issues are still here. Check girlfriends OP3 and her screen is basically perfect, galaxy s6 edge screen had acceptable lines from top to bottom, but my OP3 had left side brighter than the right side. Also, if you examine your screen more, you will see that the darker side of the screen is lagging behind when scrolling from Completely black picture to grey picture. I hope that my 3T wont have it as bad as my OP3 had. Fingers crossed

Just left the Westfield o2 store. Their display unit has yellow on the other side. Typing this from my non uniform htc 10 which uses lcd. The one plus 3 uses a Samsung panel. The majority will have issues I am afraid.
I have always been OCD about my screens. I see this as a chance to just stop being and learn to enjoy. I have an s7 an HTC 10 a p9 and my one plus 3t at home now. Every panel has issues. My HTC 10 has a pink left side, the previous ten had yellow tint and bottom. The s7 edge has pink at top, the P9 minor light bleed. In the end the plus screen with its pink green amoled inconsistency is typical amoled for me. Well done to anyone for having a near perfect screen but the luck of the draw are too few and in between.

My LG G2 had a perfect screen. So is new technology bringing more flaws? I'm just starting to think that amoled is ****ty technology. I'd rather live with not so black blacks, than with half of my screen being discolored

I know what you mean...
Problem is that Samsung is the only one manufacturing AMOLED panels, and their triangle (green red blue) often shows a greater or less gathering of greens resulting to pink/greens. Anandtech has a good article on this, and it has been happening since the S6. Does this look familiar?
https://www.buyfromwhere.com/galaxy-s6-the-ugly-truth-about-its-screen/

I had a one plus 3 for two weeks and had the same issue, I returned it and go the 3T and now this device seems fine. So I'd return it before the 15 days are up. But thats just the experience I've had.

I have screen OCD; I sent two Nexus 6Ps back last year because of a purple hue - then I defected to iPhone and have to say the screen was perfect. Pleased to say back on Android and this OP3t screen is great - overall colour is balanced with no blues yellows or purples - very impressed

Which one is normal? The whiter one is from Sam's Club and the yellow one from Google. Google has always given the nexus devices a yellowish hue so I'm not sure..
My gnex is more yellow than both lol
Well I have to say, it sucks that you have a yellowy screen from google, but this is just the range of screens you will find in manufacturing. Would you have found it yellowy had you not had something to compare it to? Probably but it all comes from the same place... Asus. Google did not tune screens from Play store to be more yellow than that brick and mortar stores. I don't like that there are inferior screens out there, or defects in general. In a perfect world there would be NO defective units, but we don't live in a perfect world. Even the retina equipped iPad has yellow screens for some, etc. If you don't like it (I wouldn't!) please get an exchange! I would not accept that knowing that there are nice white screens out there. In fact, I went through 7 nexus S's and 2 galaxy nexus phones to get one with a screen that I could accept.
It's just a warmer white. Some will get a cooler white which is blueish. Just how displays end up. I know my rezound has a warmer white compared to my friends but I wouldn't call it a defect

I'm going crazy, each nexus 7 I've got have a defect:
Blinking screen, bleeding edge, colour defect :S
Check this, Franko Kernel r13 left, right stock 2min uptime. Both are C80 8gb from google.
I hate this, Too many replacements, what to do, replace again?
the one on the left is correct, the one on the right has washed out colors
It's yellow tint, screen works perfect, if yo compare both tablets you realized how bad the screen is :S
All my previous 2 replacement units have the yellow tint. My original one has normal white color.

Another one affected by yellow tint, in my case in a C80.
This is my second replace, first one was by a very minimal screen lift in the left side.
I'm surprised by the argument about "this is not a defect". We are talking about screens. In a TV/monitor it's unthinkable to ignore these artefacts, why we should do it in a touchscreen device??
Each one have a tolerance, but the fact is the fact. The screen works bad, maybe is related to calibration or maybe with a bad ensamble, but no one guarantee you that it doesn't going to worst.
If you want to have a device that is not optimal "out of the box", you accept a unnecesary risk.
both C80.
Latest 8gb 3 of them with yellow tint.
And here is me thinking the 'warmer' colours were normal on a N7.
Just realized how yellowish all the whites are on mine... and I thought everything is fine with this one.
It's amazing how fast and good can be a cheap 7inch tablet. But when so many have problems

I think they use different screens - the one on the right is the 3G model. I bought one last week and returned it because of the screen tint. The replacement has the same problem. The same reason Tv's have Grey bodies and black bezels. Mostly anything you watch that's back lit usually will have a black bezel because it's appealing for long time viewing, reading and less write strain and helps to not notice the bezel. A white bezel becomes a distraction to the eyes. You can actually Google this. It's true.

As I understand it, part of the reason there was such a long wait for one of the white iPhone models (maybe the 4), it was like 6 months before they could get the proximity sensor I believe it was to work correctly with the white face (may have also been the Ambient Light Sensor as well). I say it made it 1000x easier not to have to retest and adjust said sensors for the white model that will be surpassed and replaced in October anyways.

make one with both sides white but the sides black i think that would lookcool
I think it is because of the costs.
Nexus is a low production quantity and low cost project, so you have no chance to distribute those development costs among many millions of units.
While white back is probably a relatively inexpensive affair, a white LCD frame is probably in a whole different price league.
So they needed to decide: either all device fronts in white or all in black. Black won. And I am thankful for that.

A sum of all these IMO.
the white front photoshop looks good because you didnt photoshop the bottom with the navigation keys. the black navigation keys work with black front because it creates the illusion that the keys blend into the bezel of the phone, which would be drastically more difficult with a white front (even if you were to make the soft keys white, there would be disparity with each phone display as its typically much easier to generate true black then pure white white)
2c
personally I think this design looks way better than pure white. I wish more manufacturers would build their phones like this. I think the white GN is one of the best looking devices ever made.

Many good reasons and philosophy's behind why and agree, one of the biggest thing is that the production has taken far less hence cost.

Can you be more specific? Brightness level, which direction your tilting it, whole screen/part of screen etc
All brightness level. The whole screen had a yellow hue if look at it straightly. But the yellow tint will disappear if the phone is tiled to any direction by 10 degrees.

Mine does this too- it's a "feature" of the last gen OLED displays that Samsung have fixed with the new gen (which Moto obviously couldn't source for this phone). My Nex did this too. Screen adjuster + manual brightness over 50% fixes it for me

interesting.. you mind sharing you setting for the screen adjuster? It's quite obvious and I wonder how all those online reviews don't seem to mention it. A blob of yellow/orange-ness moving across the screen as you tilt the phone

There's also the chance of getting a bad battery or an underperforming processor.

I don't think so, but anything can happen. And not just with Motorola, defects happen everywhere. I guess my point was that since everything else with my phone is perfect except for a yellow tint depending on viewing angle, I'm not going to roll the dice and replace it unless I know the yellow screen is a fluke.

Contrast (true blacks)

How well do you know your fifty shades of grey? Rate this thread to express how good the LG V20's display contrast is. A higher rating indicates that black is true black, rather than a very dark gray.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
Definitely not a Note 7, which sets the standard for true blacks. I'll bet this screen is easier on the battery.

I'm going to disagree. The Note7 is a standard for "true black" because it is actually true black. An LED/OLED/AMOLED/etc display accomplishes black by simply shutting off an LED pixel, thus creating a 100% TRUE black. (Also, LED being off is using 0 energy).
LCD's on the other hand require backlighting, thus anytime the screen is on, the entire thing is lit. This is why no LCD will ever accomplish a 100% true black. It's also the reason why LCD's tend to be more of a battery hog because all pixels, even black ones, require lighting which requires energy.
To see the difference, put an AMOLED and LCD screen phone beside each other in a dark room and do a google image search for 000000, click one of the results and view it full screen. The AMOLED phone will appear to be off and the LCD phone will still be giving off light.

DING DING DING We have a winner!!!!
Note 4 Note 7 no difference for this discussion same AMOLED panel.
the LGv20 has a nice screen. very nice screen in fact (I now have one) it is not REMOTELY as good as my note 4 screen.
way way way to high a color temp on the panel. its damned near blue. not remotely white. when I use low warming it helps a little but not much. you get used to it but you really really notice in large areas of white.
the blacks are ok but again. horrid if you are used to an oled panel. I hope LG puts an oled panel in the V30 since I know they have the tech (their oled televisions are drop dead sexy alas way way outside of anything remotely in my budget)
what helps is that it has the 1440p panel. this really is the ideal resolution for a 5.5 to 6 inch panel where 1080p is just lacking noticeably. you adjust to the high temperature you don't adjust to low resolution.
sadly so far the camera is crap at night. grrr. was hoping for better. have not really tested in in daytime yet though I expect it will be fine.

Hmm.. Coming from a note 7... The 7 still has a better screen.. But increase brightness to 60 and up and it looks really great. Can't complain.
Yeah the blacks cant compare to my note 4 but at least the viewing angle is good enough. Dont notice any colour shift at any reasonable angle.

There's already a thread all about it
It's not much of a thread tbh. I've just read it.
Amoled vs LCD. Note 4 vs V20. You win some you lose some. Having come from Amoled screens (Nexus 6, Note 4, etc) you get spoiled by blacks. However, the colors on the V20 are fantastic. I am a weekend pro photographer and can tell you I feel the V20 is way more natural than the over saturated colors of an Amoled screen. Also viewing angles on the V20 maintain colors while the Note 4 does not.
But back to black levels. This is good for an LCD screen and turning off the top display improves it a lot. The black level is good but it is a dark grey. But when you watch Netflix etc in the dark it is not bad at all. Not Amoled good but definitely not bad.
OK so having done some more watching with the lights totally off, I can say this is a disaster in terms of black levels. I watched 10 minutes of Lord Of The Rings and pretty much stopped.

Question Do you have rainbow effects on your Pixel 7 screen?

A user on Reddit posted that they had rainbow effects on their P7 screen when the screen was held at an angle. I did a little searching, and found that this was fairly common on the P6 screens as well. Apparently Google found that this was a normal effect and in tolerance with their manufacturing specifications.
https://www.reddit.com/r/pixel7series/comments/y3af8s
https://www.reddit.com/r/GooglePixel/comments/qo6wz7
Do you see any rainbow effects on your P7 screens?
I noticed it yesterday when the phone was about three feet away from me on the table. Maybe at a 45 degree angle it rainbows, but holding it, or being close to it, shows no signs of it. It doesn't bother me since the way I "normally" hold and use it do not produce the effect. Only if it's at a big enough angle. Even so, it is very minor. When I did see it I had to move my head back and forth to really notice it. Otherwise the screen just looks a little off color on parts of the screen. No biggie.

A user on Reddit posted that they had rainbow effects on their P7 screen when the screen was held at an angle. I did a little searching, and found that this was fairly common on the P6 screens as well. Apparently Google found that this was a normal effect and in tolerance with their manufacturing specifications.

Do you see any rainbow effects on your P7 screens?

The phenomenon of lenses causing light to split into its component parts is called "diffraction". Any transparent medium where light travels at a different speed from the medium it came from will exhibit this phenomenon.
Mine has a slight blueish and pink tint on white at angles. I'm not sure what to do. It's not bad, I don't really notice it. I would be happy to exchange it if I knew there were some displays that didn't have this issue.
Mine has that too. But geezes, you have to be looking at the phone at an extreme angle to notice it.
Thanks for posting your experiences guys. I tried to edit the poll to reflect a vote where the issue is present but doesn't cause a problem. You should be able to change your vote. Hopefully I didn't screw things up there, and if I did, my apologies.
I notice it but the bigger issue is the green tint, just looks awful compared to my calibrated monitors.
My old S8 had a bit of a reddish tint but the colors looked better overall if a bit oversaturated. Might try to root and use Sa2ration or something.
My Pixel 6 Pro did. The Pixel 7 Pro does not.
Ok I can weigh in now. I see the exact same effect on this phone as my other oled phones. When you look at the screen at more extreme angles, you get a bluish tint to white screens. Really not an issue for me, and I don't consider it a rainbow effect (though I think it is the same thing).
On my pixel 7 I get the rainbow effect on white backgrounds when looking directly at the screen not at an angle. The screen on my Samsung a53 is much better then the screen on my pixel 7
people cant enjoy the phone for what it is...just buy the damn thing and enjoy it, its not like its noticeable if you looking at it from a normal view
I think it also depends on the kind of person you are. At work I asked 10 people and only one colleague noticed a slight shift. My iPhone XS Max back in the days also had this issue. I traded it in and got a new one, which had the same issue. I then used the phone for another 2 years and aside from the first week it didn't bothered me anymore.
They all have it. Some more than others. If you're looking for it, it's there. If you just use your phone it will disappear and just leave an excellent phone to enjoy.

i agree
Maybe a bit, but only at extreme angles. Any normal angle I'd look at my phone I can't see anything.

My p6 pro doesn't have it, even at angles and full brightness, weird
Mine has bluegreenish and redish wave-tints on angles displaying white backgrounds. But I got enough other problems in life. So ... idc
I have had three Pixel 7 (non Pro) - all of them had the same rainbow effect.
And this is quite annoying because you can not really keep 100% the same angle by reading or looking at the display while holding the smartphone in the hand. You always move a bit - and then the blue or red waves are rolling over your screen.
For me the display is one of the most important components - the display you are looking at all the time you are using the device.
But that's just my point of view...
At first I had no clue what people were talking about, but after turning the brightness to 100% and tilting the phone in an angle I'll never use (since its impossible to look at the screen since its so tilted) - then yes.
I do have the rainbow-effect on my Pixel 7.
However, its a non-issue.
I had to tilt it even more than the person in the video from OP,
but even that angle seems like a non-issue tbh.
Might as well be my protective glass for all I know.
I'll never see it unless I tilt to an unusable angle.

Upgrade to the Pixel 7 Pro since it doesn't have this issue since they didn't cheap out on the display. Seems they didn't change the screen from the Pixel 6 since XDA actually mentioned this in the review they did on the screen: "Rigid OLEDs are an older construction that is now usually only used in budget phones...Also, on rigid stacks, the refraction of the light transmitted through the glass layers causes unwanted rainbow viewing angles that you simply don't see on flexible OLEDs."
I personally find it annoying but only because I know about it now and only really noticeable if you looking at the phone at extreme angle like sitting on your desk or other flat surface. My fancy expensive larger S7+ Samsung tablet also has same issue so obviously doesn't bother enough people for them to spend more to upgrade the display to get rid of it. Also, pretty anoying that my much older LG v35 phone doesn't have this problem either since it was flexible OLED, but as you can see flexible OLED easier to break around edges, another reason I went with Pixel 7 instead of the Pixel 7 Pro.
Pixel 7 Pro: it does not have any rainbow issues.
Here's a pic I took of my S7+, iphone SE, LG V35 and Pixel 7 and can u guess which one is the Pixel? Easy to spot since only other one than the large S7 with the rainbow colors. Also, as you can see from the pic most noticeable on a clear white background so if you work or look at a lot of that like say documents at angle might be annoying enough but not to upgrade to the Pixel 7 Pro just to get rid of it. Even if you did you would still get bluish color like on the LG V35 OLED display at bottom because that's just how OLED works
Why do I see a color shift when I look at the display from an angle?
