IMEI is your phone DNA. It's what makes it unique to another cellphone. This is the number that is assigned in your provider account. If you lose or get your phone stolen they block this IMEI so people can't use the phone anymore since its tagged. If you modify your IMEI and your provider sees the change they can believe your phone was stolen/tempered OR you could get a IMEI marked as stolen and your provider will cut you off. The IMEI is also used for tracking in emergency situation. If they look for 3514856147 and your phone report a IMEI like 998775258 there won't be a match. The E911 can locate you via your GPS location as its sent on every call but your provider won't be able to triangulate your location to report it to the authorities with the incorrect IMEI.
This is why you need to return with your real IMEI both for your safety and keep your phone working.

[Q] Which number is the IMEI on a Korean SK Telecom GS3

Hi everyone. So I recently got my Korean SKT GS3 stolen while at a wedding in India. I have friends here who know a person or two in the police, and is in a position to help me out and get my phone back for me. However, in order to do that I need the IMEI number. I didn't write down my IMEI number before I had it stolen, but I DO have the box that the phone came with. There are a lot of different numbers on the box, and I'm not sure which one the IMEI number is. I assumed it was 15 digit number on the box, but when I checked it with www.imei.info, it gave a completely different phone. There's another 15 character thing on the box, but I think that's the serial number because it starts with 12 SSBO 4G *******.
Can anyone confirm which number is the IMEI number? And by chance.. would anyone know if it's possible to track this Korean phone when it's in India?
Thanks in advance!

[Q] Get MAC Address of Nexus 7 from Serial Number

I have had my Nexus 7 stolen (stolen from mail box - so I have no way to get the MAC address off my router).
Is it possible to find out the MAC Address from the device's Serial Number?
I called Google Support and have gotten the Serial Number - but they say they are unable to get me the MAC Address (I find that hard to believe).
I would like to contact the local Police with the MAC Address and try and track down the device - but as I don't have the MAC Address I can't.
Is this possible?
Thanks!

Why can't you just contact the local police with your serial number? It's significantly more likely to be useful. Leaving aside the stupid conspiracy theories about PRISM, the police can't just drive around town scanning for your Wi-Fi MAC/demand every ISP in the area look out for a device with a given MAC. Most stolen devices are going to be located via their S/N anyway, since those are more readily available.
I don't find it hard to believe at all. Every single wireless chip (Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and potentially cellular) that goes into these things has a different MAC. There's no benefit at all to Google for tracking these MACs during production and tying them to an S/N. There are other, better identifiers for their metrics.
Still, sorry to hear that. That's got to suck. The long and short is that no, it's probably not possible because there's no relationship (mathematical or otherwise) between MAC and S/N.
Yeah, I'm not sure what good a mac address would do you.

Question Serial Number in Status different from box and phone sticker

Hello everyone, I recently bought RN10 PRO (Indian version) and I've noticed that the Serial Number in the settings and when dialing *#06# is different from the box, however the two IMEI numbers are identical on both the device and the box
I ran CIT (dialed *#*#6484#*#*) and the Serial Number there was identical to the one on the box.
Should I be concerned or return the device? or is it something common and normal?
thank you for your time.
It's not uncommon for the software to be misreporting the serial number sometimes. Xiaomi has some bugs, but as long as it's not breaking, it's fine. My phone doesn't report the correct serial number either after update, and I know it's a genuine device since I bought it sealed and in person at an official Xiaomi store. The important thing is the IMEI, as the IMEI is unique to each network device. Though the IMEI can be spoofed, each IMEI is registered to a specific device, so if you ran a check on a spoofed IMEI, it will return a different device as a result.
Here's what you can do to check for authenticity. Visit this website and enter the IMEI (first one, then the other): https://www.mi.com/global/verify/#/en/tab/imei
Both IMEIs should show your correct phone model.
