Hi, i have a htc one m8 sprint. I use original rom, but i can't find hotspot anywhere. Please, help me. How do i fix this problem?
1. is your Bootloader unlocked
2. are you rooted
Requirements
Rooted Android device
Vanilla Android/AOSP-based firmware or custom ROM
Android 6.0 or higher
Step 1Install a Root-Enabled File Browser or build.prop Editor
To get this one going, you'll just need either a root-enabled file browser or a dedicated build.prop editor app to add a single line to your build.prop file. If you don't already have one of these already, here are a pair of free options:
Install root Explorer (below) or FX File Explorer for free from the Google Play Store
Install Build.prop Editor for free from the Google Play Store
I'll be demonstrating using a root file browser, but the basic premise should be just about the same regardless of which method you use.
Edit Your build.prop File
The build.prop file is located in the system folder on the root partition of your device, so navigate to this directory with your root file browser to begin. From here, make sure the folder is mounted as "read/write," then long-press the build.prop file and choose "Open with," then "Text editor."
Next, scroll down to the bottom of your build.prop file and press the enter button on your keyboard to add a new line. From here, regardless of if you're using a file browser or a dedicated build.prop editor, the process will be the same. Simply add the following line, then make sure to save your changes before exiting:
net.tethering.noprovisioning=true
Step 3 Reboot & Enjoy Free Tethering
Once you've added the line to your build.prop file, all that's left to do is to reboot your phone. When that's taken care of, head to the "More..." entry in Android's main Settings menu, then select "Tethering & portable hotspot." From here, simply turn on the "Portable Wi-Fi hotspot" option and connect your secondary device to begin tethering, and all the while, your carrier will be none the wiser.
Thanks. I'll try it.

in settings go to backup and do a full reset it will return your phone back to stock if that is what you are referring to
or open dialer and type ##786# this will also completely reset the phone as if you just bought it

I misspelled my first name when I registered my NC. So when I went to Settings -> Device Info -> About Your NOOKcolor, my name in the Owner field was misspelled. I was able to correct it online via BN.com but the NC wouldn't correct itself. It's a minor annoyance but wanted it corrected.
What you need:
Rooted NC with Superuser access
Root Explorer or equivalent
SQLite Editor or equivalent
What to do:
Use Root Explorer and navigate to /data/system to find the accounts.db file
Copy the file to the root of your SDCard (I was unable to make edits to the accounts.db file while it was located in /data/system)
Locate the copied file and open it using SQLite Editor
Open the "extras" table
CLICK AND HOLD the name field you want to edit. In my case it was the firstname field
Select "Edit Record"
Correct your name in the Value field
Click Save
You should receive a confirmation that the update was successful
Use the back button (soft key button on the bottom menu) to get back to Root Explorer
Copy the newly edited accounts.db file
Navigate back to /data/system
BEFORE YOU PASTE, rename the existing accounts.db file to accounts.db.old (just a precaution in case you don't want to lose the original file)
PASTE the newly edited accounts.db file into /data/system
NOTE: the r/w permissions are different between the original accounts.db.old file and the newly edited file Update the permissions of the newly edited file to match that of old file
Reboot
Once it's up, you should see your corrected name. I was able to successfully download a book using the NC Shop so all should be well.
** DISCLAIMER: Do at your own risk. I assume no responsibility if this doesn't work for you or causes issues with your NC. I can't imagine it will as it's a very minor database modification. ***
Yikes I goofed up my accounts.db file by editing it with the text editor (just didn't read the instructions carefully. Moving too fast.). Also didn't back up the file before editing (I know I'm an idiot ). Any idea how I can restore this file? Thanks.
Ok, I just managed to restore the file and all is ok, and my name is corrected. Next time I will read instructions better!
Phew! Glad to hear it worked out for you.

I have a rooted NT, and i start to notice the owner/account name becomes "unavailable". I went to the location specified above, but couldn't find the entry. Would anybody happen to know how i can change it?
Thanks.

This is the NC forum. You have a NT. Hop over to the NT forum and post question there.
Here's a "How to" using nothing but your phone and computer (or Mac):
1.) If you JUST want the clock, you'll need to download onto your Mac or PC either "missing.zip" or "iofthestorm.zip" from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=940456&page=6
2.) Extract the zip file, and open the folder: missing>system>app. Both of these zips have extras bundled into them, so locate Clockpackage.apk. Now, keep this window open.
3.) You'll need a file manager (I like Root Explorer) that allows you to see the "system" (you won't see "" around these files w/in your phone) file. Within in the "system" file, is the "app" file . You'll need to remove the previously bundled clock, but before you do you have to bypass the "system" file's r/o permission. For noobs, r/o = read only. r/w = read/write.
4.) I don't have the link, so click search from w/in the Android Market on your phone and type: mount /system. It'll be the first app that appears on the list. Mount /System is literally the name of the app, so the spacing, etc., is not a typo. Download and install.
5.) When finished with step # 4, fire up your new app, Mount /System, and click the button that says, "Mount r/w."
6.) Remove your old clock from the system/app folder. I first made a copy into my download folder just in case anything went wrong. Once the copy was in a place I could locate again, I went back to system/app folder and deleted the previously bundled clock.
7.) I plugged my phone via usb (settings/applications/development/USB debugging) into my computer. Locate the folder in step #2. Find the clock. Then, drag and drop onto your system/app file.
8.) You're done! Close Root Explorer, and you should see your old Samsung Clock in your app drawer on your phone.
Please note, I'm not a software developer nor am I a hacker. I know only about my device, a Samsung Fascinate, so please don't ask me how to use this mod for other devices. Those who would like to do so would be better off following some of the adb tutorials posted on these forums.
First of all, I'm not a dev, and this isn't my work. I have permission to share it.
As you may know, after the ICS update, wifi won't work on some carriers when SIM card is inserted. And just extracting the SIM won't fix it, you should extract, make a factory reset and boot the phone without the SIM then it will work, and re-inserting the SIM card will break it again.
This is just a temporary solution, we need a dev to be kind enoguh make it permanent.
"Omidkorat" from and-roid.ir found this, ALL CREDITS TO HIM.
1. Root your phone (if not already rooted)
2. Install Root explorer. (ES file explorer with root permission will NOT work)
3. Install SQLite editor.
(both are paid apps, so I can't share them here).
4. Turn off the wifi first, then go to this address from root explorer:/data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases
5. Copy ALL the files and paste them in a folder on your sdcard.
6. Open settings.db (it should open with SQlite editor itself, on es file explorer it won't, so that's why you can't use it.)
Select secure. Select and hold on "wifi_country_code" then select "Edit record" or select it>press menu>Edit record.
Change it (whatever it is, it's "ir" for Iran, must be different for other countries) to US.
Press save, it should say saved successfully.
7. Now copy the edited settings.db to it's original place using root explorer, and paste it. The file may disappear the first time, just do it again. All files in that folder may disappear, and that's why you should copy all the files in that folder in the fifth step.
8. Now turn on the wifi. It should work.
This is just a temporary solution, after reboot, you will loose the wifi and you have to repeat step 7 again. And it creates other problems, like language from settings will fc, all options but "turn off" from the power menu will disappear, and maybe more.
Again, ALL credits to omidkorat from and-roid.ir

I know I posted in dev section, if it doesn't belong here, I kindly ask mods to please move it.
Also, we have already contacted mathkid95 and he was kind enough to start working on a fix.
Yes its kernel related. I had the issue too but it was fixed on the 2.6 ICS kernel.( The franco 9-12 and 12-12 ICS kernel. ). Now kernel 3.0 has the problem again

Edit build.prop and use sqlite to change settings.db
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA Free mobile app
1. Unlock
2. Root
3. Download root explorer and sqlite editor
4. Open sqlite editor
4.a - under the files tab navigate to "data/data/com.android.providers.settings/databases/settings.db/global"
4.b - click the + symbol to add a new entry
4.c - In name section put "tether_dun_required" all lower case exactly as it appears here.
4.d - In value section put "0" thats the number zero.
4.e - click save and exit program.
5 Open root explorer
5.a - Under the root tab browse to "/system"
5.b - long press on file "build.prop" choose "open in text editor" choose "yes" to remount as read-write and continue
5.c - add this as a new line to the bottom of the file "net.tethering.noprovisioning=true" all lower case exactly as it appears here. Just 1 uppercase letter here can make it not work.
5.d - save and exit
6 Reboot
7 Native tethering should work now.
Thank you kindly!
Edit:
Unfortunately I followed your instructions exactly and when I turn on hotspot I get "Unable to connect to data network; you may not be subscribed to Tethering or Hotspot service; please contact your phone company"
EDIT 2: After TWO reboots it works! Thanks again.
I understand half of that but let's see
How to get free hotspot= Get rid of stock ROM, flash custom ROM instead.
So this is for any phone that is rooted. I kind of stumbled on it by just modifying/deleting entries inside of com.google.android.projection.gearhead. I use mixplorer cause its the easiest most user friendly.
1. Open mixplorer and navigate to /data/data/com.google.android.projection.gearhead/files/phenotype/shared/
2. Open gh.phenotype.pb as text with the in app code editor
3. Search for
AppValidation__blocked_packages_by_installer
4. Delete the line of the app your trying to use and save the file.
5. Press and hold on the file and select I on the top.
6. Change owner to root 0 and set permission to rw 600 if it's different.
That's it. My file hasn't updated since February 21 and I continually update Android auto and won't lose any app like obd2aa or fermata and the like. Hopefully it'll work for you too.
Hello, I have looked in the folder /data/data/com.google.android.projection.gearhead/files/phenotype/shared/, but I don't have the gh.phenotype.pb file as you can see in the screenshot. Can it be in another folder? Thank you
