Yes, I have read every other thread I could find.
Anyways, I bought a Samsung Captivate on Kijijii. I did test it before I bought it, and it picked up 5 bars, and more importantly, held the 5 bars.
Took it home, and ordered the unlock code, which took a few days to get through. In the meantime I upgraded the phone from 2.2 to 2.3.3. Everything seemed to be fine. Got the unlock code, put in my SIM card, put in the unlock code....everything worked perfectly. It didn't pick up a signal though at first, which is a problem with my carrier(I think). They make you go in and manually search and then register. Which I did. Well, for the longest time it wouldn't find the carrier. I have pretty crappy service, so I went outside, still nothing.....went to work and stood under a cell repeater which gives 5 strong bars to any other phone, and my Captivate would show my carrier, I would register, and it would get 1 bar, and then within 10 seconds, it would lose signal again. All while I was standing right beside the cell repeater.
Not only that, but for some reason it would turn on flight mode, and then when I would try to disable it, it would sit there for about 20 min doing nothing.
I went back to 2.2.....still did the same thing. Went to 2.3.3 again, still the same problem. Tried 3 different modems for my specific model phone, 1 of them would find the network instantly, register within 10 seconds, and then drop signal again and go into enabling flight mode, and being a general pain in the ass to turn off. I would actually have to reboot the phone to be able to search for networks again.
The phone came from Rogers, so I put in my brothers Rogers SIM card, and it instantly found the network, registered and gave me 2 bars without me having to do anything. Except then it began dropping signal, getting signal back...dropping it, getting it back. It is winter here right now, and we do have spotty service, but I have Samsung Fascinate that holds at least 1 bar consistently. Not sure if the antenna strength is better. From what I understand they are more or less the same.
I swapped out my SIM card into a different unlocked phone and got service instantly, and then put another different SIM card into the Captivate, and it had the same problem.
I'm pretty much out of options. I'll try tomorrow to see if I can hold a Rogers signal better, which it hopefully can because I'm thinking of selling it.
But I'm inclined to believe that it might be a software problem. Problem is I have no idea what to do in order to fix it.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
Played around with it a bit more. On 2.3.3 with the KH3 modem installed, it will find the network, then try to connect for 10 min, where it will then say 'unable to connect, please try later.'
Then after clicking again, it will say 'unable to connect, select automatic registration' and then sit there for another 5 min. When it finally comes back, I will click on 'select automatically' and it will say after a couple min, 'registered on network', but won't get signal.
All of this I do with 5 bars service. Or in an area with 5 bars service.
Also, the flight mode constantly comes on, and disables 'mobile networks'....so I can't access it. And its a bit weird that it would do that, since any other android phone that I've had, when I lost service, it would constantly try to connect, not go into flight mode and refuse to come out.
Would it help to install a custom ROM on it? I'm going to try going back to 2.2 and test some more stuff. Problem is the small amount of time I spent with 2.2 last night, the phone would crash everytime I tried searching for networks.
After playing around with it even more, I'm convinced that it says 'error while searching for networks' because the phone constantly jumps back into flight mode.
Even when it does get a signal and registers, the phone jumps back into flight mode within a couple seconds, and bang the signal is gone.
Are you flashing with the sim card in the phone? Or if you are flashing through cwm are you leaving the usb cable plugged in?

I flashed with Odin, WITH the SIM card in the phone. I never bothered to take it out. Would it make a difference?
I actually just flashed back to 2.2 with the SIM card in the phone. It found the network, registered on the network, but then dropped signal and activated flight mode again.
Odin flash goes like this. Put phone into download mode, plug phone into USB, open Odin, put 2.2 file into 'phone' section, make sure re-partition isn't checked, click start, and it does everything it should do. Phone restarts running 2.2.
No open ODIN FIRST!!! And then plug in phone... know your stuff before you give false info.

After flashing back to 2.3.3 without the SIM card in the phone, I still get the same problem. But the phone doesn't seem to constantly be going back into flight mode.
Does the modem file change if you go back to 2.2 and back up to 2.3.3? I might have flashed the wrong modem or something.

I'm not quite sure what you mean. I've done it both ways, and each time the flash has been successful.
I should mention that baseband version on my status menu says 'I896UXKH2.'
And I'm running 2.3.3.
So I'm not sure if the modem changes when you go back to 2.2. I forgot to check that.
I thought you were suppose to put it in the pda slot not the phone??

I did actually put it into the PDA slot. Sorry.
Anyways, rooted and installed CM7, installed the KC1 radio, which SHOULD work in Canada on the 850mhz band, and when I search for networks, the only network it finds is Can Rogers Wireless Inc. Up till now it found MTS as well, which is the network I want to use.
I have an MTS(working SIM card) inside the phone. Just bizarre. Could the unlock code not have worked correctly?
Just completely bizarre. I couldn't get any modem to even recognize and find my network of choice, MTS.
So I went back to exactly how the found was when I bought it. Stock 2.2. Going to find out if even a Rogers SIM card will work in it.
There could be two possible things:
1. Unlock code would had messed up.
2. Corrupt IMEI number! Check IMEI number on the box of your phone or below battery and compare with that of the phone (*#06# or settings)...

The IMEI number on the status menu on the phone is identical to the phone under the battery.
So that leaves the unlock code. The guy who gave it to me, cellunlocker.net gave me instructions for locking it to a specific carrier. I tried that with MTS, and it doesn't work. Basically you punch in a code in the dialer, put in the MCC/MNC code, put in the network lock code, and lock it for that carrier. It said it worked successfully, so I have no idea what else went wrong.
The instructions I mentioned above he gave me after I told him the original method didn't work. That method being putting in non-accepted SIM card, and the box pops up asking for network unlock code. I punched the code in he gave me, and it said unlock successful.
Anything else I should do?
I have the similar problem on any 2.1~2.3 stock firmware which I have tried.
I'm using Tmobile now, and the IMEI is correct.
But I only receive 1 bar or no bar signals.

So you unlocked your phone as well? Perhaps the bands are wrong? I know T-mobile uses a different band than other US providers.
In my case, the Captivate uses the 850/1900 bands, which is what Rogers and MTS use.
MTS being the carrier I want to use it on.

I ordered my unlock code from cellunlock.net and it didn't take. I used the Galaxy S Unlock app and it worked fine. When you enter *#7465625# it does show the network lock as off right?

Didn't take as in it said it cannot unlock? Because when I put in the code from cellunlock it said unlock successful.
But I didn't know you could check with that code. I'll do that later. Thanks.
So apparently I had locked the phone to MTS. Put in a Fido SIM card to try something different, and it said enter network unlock code. Entered the unlock code I got, and it said unlock successful.
Now when I type in *#7465625# it says 'off' under all the headings, just like my Fascinate says.
It still holds signal, loses signal though with Fido. I have no idea if that is a problem or what is going on. It'll get 2 bars, or about -99dbm, 5asu, and then suddenly drop it. Get it back again....drop it after 10 seconds.
Apparently flight mode is going on, going off, going on, going off....which is apparently why it loses signal, and gets it back again.
Before I buy another used Captivate to swap motherboards, I'd like to know if there's anything else I should look at.
Scenario: Bought used Captivate with bad USB port and running CM9 Beta. Once I finally got my SIM card, I had no network signal (couldn't even find any operators when you search for them). Redid the APNs multiple times though those seem to be for Internet and MMS rather than cell. Wifi works fine. Flashed to CM 9.1 stable. No difference. Verified phone is unlocked. Verified IMEIs match. Verified baseband was listed. Verified my phone # is listed. Flashed to CM 7.1. No difference. I wanted to flash to stock but can't because Mobile Odin won't work with CM's partition layout. Thus, it seems I am stuck with CM or MIUI.
Is there anything in efs or another system directory that could prevent me from getting a signal?

I've been with you on another thread so I know for a fact you've tried all that stuff. But I don't recall did you ever try to flash an new or different modem? If you haven't or just want to try a new one I attached the one I use. Or I can get you the link to a page with a whole lot of others to choose from.
Other than trying a new modem I'm at a loss as to what it could be besides hardware at this point. Btw were you ever able to test your sim card in another phone to make sure it's functioning? Or do you know anyone with an att sim that you could test your phone with?
Things you could try:
1. Turn the flight mode on and then turn it off and see if that helps.
2. Open the phone and see if the antenna's contact points are okay.
3. Open the nv_data.bin in efs directory and see if the value at the offset(you can search for the exact value) that stores the network lock flag is 00. If it is 01 then it is still locked. I know you checked for the lock already but it never hurts to double check. You could also take a look at nv.log and see if there is anything there at the end that might be helpful. You could also check for lock by dialing *#7465625#.

My next move was to flash some other modems actually, but I may wait until after tomorrow (see below). I tried to swap with my SIL who is on the same service but her phone takes the micro SIM. I'll try again Wed night with another choir member that has an ATT S2 I think.

1. No help.
2. Where are the contact points? I've not found any schematic or disassembly instructions for this phone. I can see the external antennae connector, of course.
3. That was how I verified it was unlocked. All the bits in the appropriate area were 00. I'll have to look at the log file.
How would I dial any service code with no service? It tells me "mobile network not available" once I hit the Phone button.
New Info
I'm really hoping this is the answer to all my headaches the past several days trying to figure out why this phone won't get service. I just spent the past hour on the phone with my OLD carrier trying to re-activate my OLD phone with a different number to give to my son. We had to jump through a bunch of hoops because my old line was still "suspended" because of the port order. It is due to be "deleted" tomorrow. So even though my NEW carrier said activation was complete and my OLD phone stopped making and receiving calls 8 days ago, could the fact my number has been "suspended" be the reason I can't see any GSM networks?
Sadly my SIM worked in another phone but his didn't in mine.
Looks like I have a mini netbook.

I'm not getting ANY signal. It always shows -110 dbM or less and 0 or 1 asu. The seller said the GPS worked fine, but I don't get a lock on that either (but maybe you need to "fix" the GPS with each ROM flash?). I've only been concerned with cell service at this point.
I'm going to pick up another Captivate in another hour. I'd like to root and unlock it right there to make sure it works, but don't think I'm that good yet to do quickly and safely. Assuming it's running KK4, the Easy Root pgm seems simple enough to root. May also try SuperOneClick.
For unlocking, I'd hoped to use Galaxy_S Unlock, but couldn't figure out how to get it onto my micro SD card to load onto the other phone.
The "new" Captivate works. It came with KK4 and a good USB port. I'll flash something onto it soon once I learn how to properly back up everything.
glad your new one works.
re: old phone gps. i think you may need to edit gps.conf in etc folder to set gps mode to standalone, rls the gps wants a network connection. in standalone mode, expect a v long time to lock, like 15 minutes.

If you start the phone without a sim card in it, does it detect its absence and vice versa too? If that functions properly then another possibility could be that the IMEI of the phone might be blacklisted. It might have been reported as stolen. You could call your carrier to find that out.

Yes, it detected whether a SIM was in it or not. When I had signed up for the new service it had said the IMEI was OK. I guess that doesn't mean it stayed that way. I would think that would just prevent you from accessing the service, not prevent you from detecting a signal at all. When I picked up the second used Captivate, his SIM card had been deactivated, but it still showed it was getting a signal.

Once I had my efs folder deleted while flashing a rom and my IMEI defaulted to some value and it showed no signal at all. I checked IMEI and realized it was a different one and that led me to look at the efs. Once I restored the efs folder from my back up, all was fine again. Therefore I think if your IMEI is blacklisted it could happen and hence made that suggestion to call your carrier. Your carrier might also be able to tell you if your phone made any attempts to register on their network or not.
A friend gave me an S5 (AT&T) with a broken screen. It had worked fine for him up to that point, and as far as I know, only the screen was broken. I successfully removed the display from a working verizon phone and put it on the AT&T.
The phone booted fine with the SIM from my S4 but doesn't have any mobile connectivity. WiFi works fine. The cell signal indicator is either the circle with the line through it, or sometime a few bars. This changes with restarts. Also, the AT&T logo does not appear in the upper left corner of the screen at any point. It almost seems like the phone is only partially reading the SIM card. The correct phone number does appear under Testing>Device Info found with *##*4636#*#*. So far, I've tried the following to no avail.
Hard reset
New SIM from AT&T
An hour on the phone with AT&T support
AT&T confirms no issues with their network or phone IMEI
Refresh ROM with ODIN (6.0.1 I think)
The SIM works correctly in both an S4 and an ancient iphone 3GS that I kept as a backup. Although after swapping the SIM around the various phones, I can no longer select "LTE GSM" as the preferred network type in Testing>Device Info. It now automatically changes back to WCDMA, but this issue is subsequent to the no service problem. All of the hardware including the motherboard look to be in fine condition with no apparent damage or water exposure.
Has anyone ever come across this issue and have a solution?
Thanks for your help. I have spent a lot of time searching for an answer here and elsewhere.
Pulled the phone back out to play with. Updated to most recent stock ROM: G900AUCS4DQC1 using ODIN 3.12
Without SIM card inserted, the signal meter consistently shows 2 - 3 bars. I'm also able to change network preferences between all available options (LTE/GSM, WCDMA, LTE/GSM/CDMA etc).
With SIM inserted, signal meter is the slashed circle. Network preference is WCDMA Preferred and will not allow any changes. It does show the correct phone number. SIM slot appears to be fine, no debris or damage to pins. This SIM is a recent replacement (one of the first things I tried when attempting to get this phone to work) and works just fine in an S4 (SGH-I337).
Has anyone ever heard of this problem before?

Welcome to xda, blinky!
Just to make sure we've got all the bases covered here, did you check the device's APN settings at all? Sometimes incorrect APN settings can cause issues.
Thanks for the welcome, Apt.
I have confirmed the APN as correct for AT&T. I've tried both APN configurations commonly listed: ATT Phone and nxtgenphone. The only difference between the two are the "Name" and "APN" fields. Both of these APN configurations work fine with an S4.
I can only believe that some file is corrupted or incorrect. The phone has never been rooted. Also, the IMEI show up and matches that printed on back of phone.
I sucessfully downgraded to Lollipop with no change in behavior. I've tried the following stock ROM's with no luck:
G900AUCS4DPH4
G900AUCS4DQC1
G900AUCS4CPA2
All have been flashed with Odin, all components included (BL, AP, CP, CSC). I tried flashing DQC1 multiple times in a row with factory resets afterward, no change.

It just so happens that I attempted my very first root ever on a 900SAUCS4DPH4 day before yesterday. My brother had put in a drawer a couple of years ago and there it sat. Odin, OF3, then Towelroot and Fireflash to Alliance V8, maintained root through a factory reset and a pretty loose interpretation of the very clear instructions let by AptLogic (my appreciation, by the way.) I've been having the same issue occur with my bars showing up but not allowing connectivity. The difference here is that this phone hasnt had a sim in it for a year. I can't even get most of the diagnostic codes to work, just comes up "Not in network" for most of them. Any ideas on what to do next, let me know. I'm always game to learn something new, as I'm just stepping into this field. If not, I'll keep you posted with whatever I deccide to try.

well you shouldn't have flashed anything on it. If it was working you should have just used it. Most probably the phone your using is from an other country and single sim. Go to download mode and check the model number, it will be something along the lines of N960N/F/F-DS and then in setting about phone see if the two model numbers match.
I hope you had made a backup. If not go back to the seller and ask him to redo the software of your phone. Or you can struggle for your self on the internet and find someone who can help you (it will be straight up hell).
And if you want anything relevant to your problem the only place I know where this problem was fix is: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ga...us-ng-help-t4073865/post83258373#post83258373
If it had TWRP on it then it was not new but a used phone that possibly was faulty .Return to seller .
Hello,
my Xiaomi Mi 9T Pro running on stock MIUI Global 12.5.1.0 (RFKEUXM) can now suddenly not connect to my mobile carrier.
I hope somebody can help me out.
Some facts and stuff I have tried:
The connectivity icon on the top is just grayed out now and shows an X.
But that was not the case in the morning today.
At that time it showed full bars, but not the usual 4G text and the mobile internet did not work. After some attempts written below it is now just gray.
Mobile internet and cell service do not work.
I have rebooted multiple times.
The IMEI for both SIM slots is shown as 0.
No baseband version is shown.
(I am sure that this was also not the case early in the morning.)
I have never installed a custom ROM on this device, bootloader was never unlocked.
The SIM card is correctly inserted and the phone number is shown in the settings for SIM slot 1.
Trying SIM slot 2 (incl. reboot) did not fix the problem.
The SIM status shows that the service is not available, also on the top left when the phone is locked. ("Dienst nicht verfügbar" in German locale.)
Trying the SIM in another phone works, which I think makes it not a carrier problem.
Trying another SIM in my phone also does not work.
I unfortunately had dropped the phone days before, but no damage visible at all (phone case FTW).
Also it worked without problems, which makes me hope this is not hardware related.
WLAN works, so internet connectivity is possible.
Phone is out of warranty.
I did search for other threads with similar issues, but they all seem to be related to having flashed custom ROMs and then losing the IMEI.
Does somebody have any idea how I can fix this?
Thank you!
Edit: I just remembered/saw that I did do the "Xiaomi Service Framework" system app update to version 6.0.6-G yesterday night, maybe that caused the problem? Currently researching on how to roll that back. If somebody knows, please do tell.

Do you have Turn on? If Turned Off, then do Turn On
If not, ie if it does not recognize the SIM card, then it looks like a hardware issue
Assuming, as you say, that SIM card is ok, correctly inserted, and that phone runs only the stock firmware - hence no root, no custom ROM, no custom Recovery (that user could possibly wipe partitions), etc
Maybe, some connection got loose and later disconnected completely
Thanks for you answer.
I am sure the SIM is inserted correctly and working. It's been in there probably for years now.
Don't know if you saw my update above about "Xiaomi Service Framework". Checking that right now. Maybe I should just do a factory reset.
What I have noticed now a couple of times is that the phone crashes and reboots, just now happened when I connect for USB debugging or before when trying to enter the SIM pin after a reboot, ...

But if the phone does not recognize the SIM card, it would not ask for the SIM pin

Agreed, therefore I am sure the SIM is recognized. The phone even shows my number and the SIM has the carrier name.

If the carrier name is recognized, then IMEI cannot be NULL
Very strange
Try to play with Preferred network type setting
Maybe something really got wrong with the updated Framework

Oh, I though the IMEI is device specific and should be there even without a SIM inserted.

AFAIK too - but without IMEI it could not attach to the network and therefore cannot show carrier name
Hence strange, and/or the contradictory descriptions/observations

Ohh, sry there is a misunderstanding.
The carrier name is only shown as the NAME of the SIM card (I guess it is stored on there or the phone has remembered it). But there is NO connection or carrier name shown in the top notification bar.

Yeah but you still have unknown IMEI - that's something that should have not happened
Anyway, go to Preferred Network Type and try with Prefer 4G, Prefer 3G or Prefer 2G - maybe, with the updated Framework, something went wrong with the bands support or so
If it wouldn't help, then I'm out of the ideas how to solve
So I did do a hard reset now, and it worked for a short time (IMEI is back), then it doesn't again, and ... just now again. It really is not stable.
Thx. I will post updates when I know more.
Unfortunately the phone keeps crashing and rebooting when using it. It just freezes and restarts, and sometimes it takes a long time to restart (seems like a crash loop).
Twice I also saw some graphic artifacts (bright magenta and green) on a small part of the screen.
I don't think this is just a mobile network connection problem anymore.
BTW: I have installed an older version of Xiaomi Service Framework (also the hard reset reverted it to a much older version), but that did not help.
Hey!!
I hope you doing great
Did you manage to solve the issue?
@Fawad Hussain
Unfortunately I could not solve it, so I am not able to use the device anymore.
Btw, as far as I can see there is no current smartphone without a notch/punch hole which is not gigantic (ASUS Rog Phone 6).

Same thing happened to me, I have managed to get it thanks to this guy in the video which I don't understand what he is saying but I just followed his steps, so if you are looking for a solution this video is.
But my device is not rooted and bootloader is locked, I tried ways but don't know how to root it or unlock bootloader properly
