Xperia Z3 Compact,M4 Aqua or XA ? - Xperia Z3 Compact Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Planning to get a new Sony phone within the mid range segment .The only available model is XA for now. But there are more of downsides on that model(No development being the main reason ) .
will it be better to choose Z3 Compact or M4 Aqua over XA ?

From an user using Z3 Compact.
If you want to use a small-size cellphone, with ultra battery (10 hours onscreen), and maybe waterproof, Please try Z3 compact.
I vote Z3 Compact

Z3 Compact has too many flaws to be considered a good phone. see here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/help/z3-compact-issues-t3528379

10 hours onscreen?
Maybe on KitKat... yes... but not on Marshmallow!

If you want to still get software updates and security patches, and have a very nice looking phone(dem bezels though) then go for the XA,the only problem is no development for it
If you want a compact phone with not so active development(but still has almost fully working AOSP Nougat) and as well very good design and battery go for the Z3 Compact(I personally use it and it is very good)
The problem with this one is as you probably saw are design issues,I haven't had any issues(yet) and I bought it one year ago.
TBH I don't like the M4 Aqua,no development(there is 2 or 3 stock based ROMs,1 only bootable Nougat ROM and a non-bootable CM 12.1),design is good no problems with that but my brother has the 8GB model and I have tried everything I know to free up space(installing debloated ROMs,factory resetting, wiping system apps) and absolutely nothing helped, only one thing he could do now is update apps.
I would buy the Xperia Z3 Compact over the XA,my personal opinion.

M4A is useless. Not worth the money. It has the Snapdragon 615, youre better off buying a nobrand phone with a mediatek processor. The XA does not have any development, and it being a sony entry level phone, might not even get proper software updates for 2 years. The z3C is 3 years old now. No point buying it. You either buy the z5c or look at other brands. Sony has lost its magic.

i highly recommend Z3 Compact. (despite its 2 years old)
have been using it for more than a year & very satisfied with it.
my only regret is that i didn't get Z3c earlier. (i was actually waiting for Z3c's successor, but after months of waiting just to find out that Z5c is SO UGLY!!!).
16 GB of internal storage i sorted it out by rooting + LINK2SD, or else u can now use SD as interal storage in 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
Camera is better than expected from 3rd parties' camera-apps.
runs high graphic games smoothly.
has dual speakers (think m4 doesn't have that)
better looking than XA and one-handed friendly.
possibly more non-stock roms than your other options.
btw your current primary phone is Xperia M? i was the same until i bricked it 2 years ago i had E4g after M & before Z3c

[Q] Xperia SP Users, please I need your suggestion on buying SP

Hello everybody,
Actually I was planning to purchase new xperia device... according to my budget, I thought of going for Xperia SP.
The reason for this thread is .. Can I go for SP as I am getting it in 19000 INR from ebay.in.. It is worth to buy or should i go for ZR which is 8000 INR more than SP price..
Will SP be future proof for atleast a year and will it Honami style 4.3 update. or just a common 4.3 update.
What do you think guys please.. suggest me!!!
and about considering the problems SP users are facing.
I don't Know how much is this in €. But SP is a really good choice! Buy the SP!
Sent from my C5303 using xda app-developers app
Test the Camera before by XSP. Picture size and quality is no more up to date. Not poor, but other devices (XS or HTC one) make better pictures. All other works great.
Value for money phone
Since I own a Xperia SP for more than 2 months now, following are my impressions. Since I am being critical I'll list negatives first.
Negatives:
Xperia SP's biggest weakness is its camera. Pictures in low light are very bad for its price... pictures in day light are ok, but nothing too good. Pictures taken by SP have more noise in them. So over all SP's camera is very much worse as compared to, say, Galaxy S3's.
The screen is not as good as Super Amoled screens of Samsung's Galaxy series or HTC's & LG's IPS LCD. However, while indoors you will not have any issue. While outdoors, the screen is a bit reflective but is still manageable. I haven't faced any other display issue till now.
Wi-fi reception is truly a bit weaker than other phones, but the internet speed is not affected. Only range is lesser.
Some people have encountered the touch issue when the phone is kept on a table & not in your palm. Some people have also faced a bit of trouble while the phone is plugged in for charging via AC adapter. However, I haven't faced any of these issues.
Positives:
The best part about SP is its performance. Snapdragon S4 Pro is simply a beast and Adreno 320 GPU blows the competition out of water. Current flagships of various brands like Xperia Z, ZL, ZR, HTC One and LG Optimus G Pro all have the same GPU.
SP has 1 GB RAM, which although is not equivalent to these flagships, is enough even for the heaviest of games/apps available in market. However, real racing 3 has some issues. Other games run very well.
Another plus point of SP is its build quality & design. It doesn't look cheap like Samsung GS3 or GS4. The illumination bar at the bottom is a very nice aspect of the design.
The battery performance of SP is one of the better ones.
When used with Bravia Engine 2, the display is awesome while indoors. It is sufficiently bright.
PRICE!!! A total value for money.
So, keeping all these in mind I would suggest:
If you are too much in cell phone photography, explore other mobiles. Galaxy S3 could be good choice in that case. Glaxy S4 mini and Nexus 4 are also there. However, all these cost slightly more than SP.
If 20K is your budget, then go for SP. You won't find a better phone at that price.
If you don't want even slightest of performance issue, surety of many more updates & have the extra budget then you can also give Xperia ZR a serious thought. It has a faster processor, more RAM & better camera in addition to being dust & waterproof. Battery life of ZR is even better than SP's.
Pretty much agree with the post from the_helix.
I think Sony have been clever with this device, they have taken away the things that average/practical users don't really care about.
Do you really need 400+ PPI, 1080p screen, a big internal memory if there's space for a memory card, more RAM etc? They have instead made sure that the processor is top notch, given it 4G and NFC - so you get almost flagship performance at half the price.
Yes some things could be better (there is always something to complain about - the S4 and HTC One are not immune from this either), but with a bigger screen and more robust build than the competition in this price range (the mini S4 and mini HTC One) I think this is the best mid-range phone on the market.
I think it's future proof - but within reason, some games developers always push the boundaries and make software that will only run really well on top devices. I think/hope it will see the next iteration of Android - is it really going to be called kit-kat?
hi,
purchased today my xperia sp in ebay.in. waiting for delivery. so now i being here for have a glance. iam biggest fan of sony till now i used four mobiles from sony, ( J230i, w810, x8, mini pro). and this is my fifth from sony. hope this mobile will meet my expectations. will join u later guys after getting my sp in hands. cheers!

[Q] Xperia ZR still worth buying?

Hi All,
I currently own a Acer Cloudmobile, it has horrific battery life even with a huge mugen power battery.
It's fine in standby, but eats battery when I travel by train.
So I've been looking at Xperias. My work has gone crazy for Zs and Z1s.
I was hoping the Z1s would be out by now, but it isn't.
So would you still buy a ZR today? what else would you consider.
I prefer having microSD (I have a 64GB card right now) and a removable battery just in case. I use my phone for the following things in order of priority. I'd also like an official 4.4 update. I have small hands for a guy, I tried an LG G2 and couldn't use the buttons on the back with one hand!
1. Listening to music
2. Surfing the web, emails social networking on a moving train or bus
3. Texting
4. Watching videos
5. Taking photos
6. Making calls
7. Gaming

well!
you have two options, either wait for xperia z1 mini (which i guess you don't want since you can't wait for z1)
or buy the zr, either way if the lg g2 was too big for you z1 is even bigger.
imho the zr is a superb device, good camera (for phones) great battery life, reletavly compact for it's hardware, and i really don't feel like the 1.5 quad core snapdragon is outdated, it works flawleslly switching between open apps, heavy 3d games pdf files etc...
i whould reccomend it.
about android 4.4... sony never said it will come to zr yet... but we already have stable 4.4 rom and CM 11 also going steady soon for zr, besides that xperia z and zr have the same hardware, so most z roms work on zr, so i guess once z gets the android 4.4 someone will make a port for zr.
but you can't count on it if it's super importent for you.
The first android device that i can recommend without hesitation. First phone that i don't even need to flash.the stock rom is very good. Just root and you're good to go.
you know.. your question is quite blasphemous in this forum...
Xperia ZR has the perfect size, weight, ruggedness, performance, battery life (although I would want a battery that never needs charging - one could hope), front facing camera (i need low bandwidth data video calling and i dont do selfies)...
but I would wait for the Z1 mini if I can since you already lost about 4-6 months of us enjoying the ZR...
:highfive:
Had my ZR for about a week now, upgraded from an Xperia Go.
A breath of fresh air after the sluggishness of the Go trying to run Cyanogen ICS, didn't even attempt installing JB.
Biggest improvement is with the camera, it actually takes a photo when I want rather than 10 seconds later.
Well pleased with it, am running the stock 4.2.2 ROM rooted and only had one problem so far - bluetooth handsfree doesn't work with the latest 2.67 update (Several threads in Sony forums about it, so it's not just me).
Not so sure
For me the ZR is definitively a very good device: good size, good power...
May be the batterie could have been better and the internal memory is a bit too small (8g so around 4.5 for user but you can root and transfer app to Sd with FolderMount).
I think you won't be disappointed but my feeling is that the Zr is a already a bit forgotten by Sony.
See the update schedule for KitKat, I m not even sure we ll get it on Zr and when? 2014? It s a joke...
So may be wait for the Z1s if you want to have update in the coming month.
Furthermore, it looks a lot better than the ZR.
This time it is really 'like the big one but smaller'.
You cannot say that when you compare Z and ZR....
z1s no removable battery, right?
Z1s is worth waiting, and ZR is the best choice at this stage.
I'd say, grab it while it's still on market
I just bought a new one. I used to own a HTC EVO 3D
and i would defenitly say it is an extremely good phone
My brother has the s4 mini and defenitly it is inferior to my xperia zr
Hi, I am also planning to buy my first android phone. My usage will me the same as of Chrispynutt except that I am not much into gaming (except for basic games like fruit cutter, temple run etc). Priority for me would be loud clear voice quality and good HD photos and videos
I am confused between Xperia ZR and Xperia ZL. Which of these will be the better performing phones and does Sony plan to countinue it's support/upgrade in 2014 and may be later on?
Also does these phones support 'AutoVoice Integration with Google Now' ( youtube[dot]com/watch?v=wI4bSMiO_xY )

I suggest you wait too as voice quality is correct on Zr but not awesome, even quite bad sometimes.
Also the camera is decent but nothing more. 13MP but the iphone is better with is 8MP...
The vga front camera is awful...
I think sony had a great concept with the ZR (quite as good as the big one but smaller size, closer to the iphone) but the ZR was just a first attempt.
The internal memory is too small, the battery average as the camera...
Im happy with it but the Z1s seems to be a lot better deal.
And for support and update, I m still waiting for 4.3 in my country so don't expect much from Sony...
They said ZR will get 4.4 but when? When Android 5 will be released?

[Q] Xperia Z3 or Z4?

Hello guys, I always follow you and find a lot of interesting stuffs in here!! Today I wanna ask you a thing: Xperia Z3 or Z4?? A read all the differences between the two devices, and I'd like to know if it's worth buy an xperia Z4 insted o the Z4. I mean, about the Z3 I like the battery, it's a little bigger, and I like even the processor just beacuse the one Z4 has (snapdragon 810) let me think about all the problem and issues that it had in this period (overheating), but it's even a 64 bit processor, so I think it's better. I even like more, in the Z4, the speaker, the position of them. Long story short:
Xperia Z3 Pro:
major capacity of the battery
the processor, never had overheating
of course the price, lower than Z4
avaiable in italy
Xperia Z4 Pro:
the processor (yes, powerfull, 64bit, but the overheating? just a nightmare?)
the position of the speaker (I did not test them, about quality of sound and volume)
it's thinner
is it avaiable in italy and compatible with all the phone lines?
PS: it's better wait for the Xperia Z5 (rumors said that it will arrive about in september)
Sorry for my english and for the bad way of writing....That is a post to ponder and reflect all together about the best purchase!!
regars guys thanks you
It is good to always get a new phone instead of old model, because after 2 years, your phone will also sell in lower price compare to the new one you buy.
It's Z3+

If want to show the world that you have the latest and the greatest, go for the Xperia Z3+ (Xperia Z4) otherwise Z3 is your best bet. There aren't many improvements in Z3+ when we compared it to old Z3, and also I'm not sure it will get released in Italy or not.
Today I read that xperiq z3+ will be released in Italy. Anyway I'd prefer the z3, both for the price and for the specifics that are not so far from the new model, I don't trust so much the capless usb, but there's the quick charge....[emoji14] I think I'm gonna wait a little longer

I completely agree!
Info
New Phone can be better in some aspect But that doesn't mean worth to buy
If you don't have concern about money so buy Z4 but you need to list wht u need from a phone?
Z4 may have over heating problem but as others said abt Z1 u can put into ICE
but for me as Z2 user none of Z3 & Z3+ worth for upgrade But i would choose Z3+ to buy

Xperia Z4, actually the Xperia Z3+; maybe the rumor Z5 is actually the Z4
Z4 is the z3+
In japan or china is the z3+ renamed into z4
The phone shop here told it also
Z3 does not overheat?
Who in the world told you that?
My Z3 constantly reduces display brightness and SOC speed when playing games or streaming videos...and try 4K recording for few minutes...
I think that the Xperia z3 would be a better buy considering the problem about overheating. the price will be even lower since the new Xperia is coming

Should I get the sony xperia z3 compact?

Guys I just have a few questions. I live in the US, I always wanted the Sony xperia z1, but it came too late to the market here. So i had to go for the Note 3. After having this phone for almost 2 years, I am thinking about switching to T-mobile and get a sony phone. I wanted the Sony xperia z3+, but it has a high price and it has that overheating problem. Also after having a big phone like the note 3, I am kind of tired of big phones. I am thinking about getting the compact. I know that here is a small chance sony will drop the new compact in the next 4 months and i have a fear that i will pay for a 399$ phone when the price will probably drop in 4 months and the support to this phone might die. So right now 7/7/2015; should I buy this phone for 399 new? (I dont want an used one) Or maybe i should just get the new xperia z3+, or wait for the new compact? I would hate to switch to a cheap phone for 4 months but i might... also I hate that the new sony xperia z3 compact doesnt have those dots on the side to charge with a sony stand/charger. I know this more personal opinion, so i just need some help. I am also in college and i have a lot of bills, I can afford the sony xperia z3+, but it would be also better for my wallet the compact.
Sony won't drop z3 compact soon, as they usually support their products for 2 years from the release. So we will see updates until september/october 2016 ...and for sure we will see Andorid M working on our machines
z3 compact DOES have dots for recharging with docking station! And you can also use a flexible magnetic connector when you travel or just for an easy use (like me).
About the size, what can we say? it's only your choice: it's better you try to handle it in a store. If you want something bigger, z3 is way better than z3+ anyways.
Last but not least, z3 compact has an incredible battery (better than normal z3, due to the smaller dimensions of the screen).
Actually I don't know how American market works because it's usually different from Europe, so I can't help you about the choice from that point of view.
I can say that if a z5 compact will be released, HERE we will see the price dropping from november onwards and z3 compact will be sold until January/February. But I know that in America Sony has a smaller market than here, so it's easy you won't be able to buy it from september onwards.
A universal advice: are you still a student? Buy only what you can REALLY afford (not what you think you can). :good:
honestly, the note 3 is a fairly large phone. going from that to the compact would be way too much. i think you would feel that the size of the compact would be way too small for you. the normal z3 would probably be a better choice.
but i mean, if you have to have the newest stuff, then i would wait. otherwise if you don't need to, the z3/z3c is perfectly fine. i wouldn't even go for the z3+. it has few advantages, and it's the same or worst in most other categories.
i know you don't want to buy used, but i would try it to see if you even like the phone. at least if you got a cheap z3/z3c and then the new one comes out, when you sell it, you don't take nearly as much as a loss compared to having a new one.
Thanks for taking a time to answer me! Yeah i am probably going to get the compact and give it a shot. I was really hoping to get the latest compact.
Z3 compact has the "dots" for charging (if that's what you mean by the magnetic charger connections) and can be used with the magnetic docks for the Z1 and Z2 as well IIRC.
As for he Z5 Compact... IF it is ever actually released (still not confirmed) then chances are it won't be available in the US until the end of the year at the earliest, if it's sold here at all. And since we know nothing about the specs of this rumored device like screen rez, battery size, etc. then who knows if it'll be worth the premium over the Z3c.
I was having the same question too. Its 360 euros in amazon.de at the moment. If z5 compact is released in September then most probably z3 compact will have a price drop 50 euro on October which is not a big deal. It will also have another 50 euro drop in one year from now if you compare it with the price of z1. z3c is already in a good price you should go get iti think

What will be your next smartphone?

I am exploring options for my next phone. What will be your future pick?
I was looking forward to a new sony device, but I am not blown away with the xperia x. But I guess it is still top of my list.

Probably a Z5 compact. The Z5 is cheaper but has the same spec as the X.
Sony have the market on small top spec phones. I like a small phone in my hand, not some massive phablet.
Plus it's waterproof and has all the features. Top audio, noise reduction technologies built in. IPS screen, there aren't any other manufacturers that come close.
But it won't be for another year, hopefully by then there will be some development on it and things like rooting will be easy.

Yeah unfortunately support on xda is virtually non existent for the z5 (compact). And I do not think it will surge eventually, then it would have happened already. It is also the main reason why I didn't switch earlier. But yeah.. Xda support is really important for me since I like to tweak certain aspects
I am going with the Huawei P9 Plus. It will be a step up from the z3c in a few areas. First off, the P9 has 4gb of ram, so multitasking is easier, and the chipset is a solid foundation as well. The z3c has a higher megapixel camera 20mp vs the 12mp P9 Plus. The P9 Plus is almost an inch bigger in size 4.6 vs 5.5 but I still think that it does not qualify as ( as Didgesteve called it ) a phablet.
Nokia's (the Finnish company) non compete clause expires next month, so in 8 days I believe, I'm waiting to see what they bring to market - I bet it'll be good - they've had years to prepare.
A Galaxy Note 6/7 or a Nexus phone. My biggest priorities are vanilla, lag free, good battery and waterproof. If google makes a nice Nexus that's waterproof and has good battery, lag and vanilla are given. For the Note, I'm not so sure about the UI. But my Z3C has become laggy as of late, even with a factory reset. Constantly at 1.6-1.9 gb memory usage.

I ways also looking forward to this. But that video showing that it breaks easily scared me off. The camera is also underwhelming.
I like specs from oneplus 3, but it is just too damn big.
Much as i like the z3c for it's size and specs, my next phone will most likely be a nexus.
While Sony's firmware isn't bad i do miss the variety of 3rd party, AOSP based roms, something that a nexus won't lack thanks to the open bootloader and abundance of developers.
For now, until we know anything about the next Nexus devices, i just hope the PA team will manage to resolve some of the more pressing bugs, a daily-driver aosp MM rom might just keep me around for a bit longer.
Definitely not a Xperia!!
i switched from z3 compact to iphone SE
I went from a HTC Desire to a HTC Sensation, then a Xperia ZR and I have enjoyed my Z3 Compact since October, 2014. I wanted a new Xperia for the summer of 2016, something like the Z6 Compact but the new Xperia X series is not what I wanted.
The only Xperia X I wanted is the X Performance but it has failed to pique my interest. Battery tests look underwhelming compared to the Z3C, the camera isn't up to the other flagships and the price is too high for a smartphone that wont' be released in Europe until July.
So I have jumped ship and went to buy an S7 Edge that features great battery, screen, camera, waterproofing and Material themes so TouchWiz isn't annoying. Maybe the screen is too big at 5.5", but the AMOLED readability in summer is top-notch and the pictures and videos taken are miles better than any other phone camera I tried.
The S7 Edge was 570 euro including the Samsung VR glasses (thanks to Vodafone). The Xperia X Performance hasn't been released yet, but I expect it to cost around 630-650 euro.
Sony has failed me first choosing the SD 810 for the Z5 line and now leaving the Z series aside (Z6 Compact, Z6 and Z6 Premium was what I wanted).
I may return to Sony when they offer something that fills the void of the Z series, not right now with overpriced phones that are released too late.
I get my Nexus 5X tomorrow! YAY! Not the newest device, but almost anything seems to be better to me than any Xperia. I really like the Nexus line. If I hadn't been that misinformed by Sony about being open blabla I would have bought a Nexus instead of an Xperia. Actually using a Z3C, going to sell it as soon as I was finally able to recover DRM with Windows 10 or Linux (Arch). So my Nexus 5X will cost me about 100 Euro. Nice price for a quite decent upgrade of camera and processor (Snapdragon 801 --> Snapdragon 808) and for a device I can fully customize and which got amazing support in FOSS community / XDA.
I think smartphones today are really fast (more than 200 (!!) times faster than my first PC., an Intel 80386. Imagine 200 PCs in your room, haha) and it's not top priority for me to have the fastest device in the whole universe. What counts for me is that the device is fast enough to be ready for daily usage, that I can modify my device to my needs without losing any feature (camera quality, sound quality), not the needs a company wants me to have... and to have a good camera (battery of the Nexus 5X is not the best but acceptable). At first I was quite satisfied with my Z3C but that slowly turned into frustration and anger. It took months to root this unholy device without losing DRM forever (thank God for the dev that finally got it!). Afterwards it was a pain in the ass to do such simple things like rooting it, install recovery (compared to my S3 and Nexus 7; atm trying to recover my DRM for selling this crappy device but ADB won't call SuperSU - wtf?!)... then saw how "good" the open-source output of the so-called developer-friendly company was and I was massively disappointed, to say it in very kind words. Still there is no fully working (--> fisheye) AOSP for Z3 series. Lollipop got fisheye, CM13 for MM is not available yet (LOL?! The only manufacturer left... what a shame) because Sony released first MM working stuff (RIL, camera) in May 2016 afaik) - more than half a year after release of MM. That's what I call developer-friendly... lol. I never gonna buy any Xperia anymore, never in a million years, that's for sure, and try to avoid buying anything made by Sony in general.
Now I'm very glad to get a Nexus (I'm still very satisfied with my Nexus 7 2013 already) because the needs of the user and customizability are top priority and it has a very good cam, which won't produce (reverse) fisheye-pictures when unlocked. I won't need to use stock ROM for this device to be fully working, nor a locked BL and a thousand hacks for stock to be comfortable with (still no dark settings for MM stock, only eye-killing whiteness). Feels like not being in bonds any more...
My brother and my sister-in-law both got the same device (Z3C stock, not rooted) and are very satisfied (for whatever reason... camera on stock with DRM is even worse than on my old Galaxy S3)... so, well. For everyone who still likes Xperia, I wish you the best with that, honestly.
Good riddance, Sony...

I know a lot of ppl that had made that switch and was satisfied about it
I'm looking for the best smartphone that does not tells itself that the system was been tampered if i root and modify something (Like KNOX or HTC do tell it), because if i want to bring my warranty back, i simply re-flash the firmware and it become unrooted.
No idea. I will be sticking with my Z3c for the foreseeable future.
I recently purchased a Galaxy s6 and was missing my Z3c within a few days. I have also recently used the LG G4 and Nexus 5x. All of these feel like a step down. The Z3c with the MM Slim rom is so fast and fluid and the battery life is ridiculous. The galaxy S6 could kill itself in 12 hours with almost no interaction. Also, it is hard to go back to a phone as large as those. Once you put a case on them, you may as well be using a tablet.
I would go for OnePlus 3 right now, but it's huge, i just don't get the hype for 5.5" screen, that requires your device body to have more than 15cm in size. All of a sudden 5" was not enough so they all had to go for more, not to mention big bezels on top and bottom of the screen even on those 5-5.2" devices.
