Hello guys,
I'm not a noob at Android (have flashed my fair share of ROMs, recoveries and kernels on Nexus and Samsung), but I am a noob at Xiaomi, and trying to install the latest Dev Global ROM (mainly for the purpose of having root to restore a bunch of Titanium Backups) is giving me a headache.. mostly since there are multiple tools / ROM types out there and I am not really sure of which to use when. The Device is a Mi5 64GB running China Stable 7.3, purchased through Xiaomi in China (so no possibility of funny ROMs installed).
What I did up to now is:
1. requested bootloader unlock on xiaomi website > unlocking the bootloader using Miunlock tool
2. downloaded official Global Stable and Global Dev and tried to flash them (yeah both, I am that desperate ) using MiPCSuite, but it does not recognize my device, says to update device first which I'm currently doing
3. downloaded official Global Stable and Global Dev and tried to flash them using Updater tool on the phone, but it says "unable to verify package".
4. got lost reading about Miflash, custom recoveries, decryption etc.
I loooked around but I cannot:
1. for the life of me understand what is the difference between Miflash and fastboot, if they use same type of ROMs etc
2. find a fastboot flashable Global Dev ROM
3. understand what the stock recovery does.. it just shows a device pic saying to connect the cable
4. quite figure out if I need to decrypt the device to make root work
Any help would be greatly appreciated.. sorry if the above was already explained elsewhere but couldn't find anything solid about it!

If you unlocked the bootloader, then it's pretty simple now.
-Download and install miflash in windows
-Download this rom and extract it to a folder. Should be no spaces in the folder name or it won't work.
-Boot the phone to fastboot mode(turn off, press volume down and power button in the same time for 3 sec)
-Start miflash
-Press refresh, it should find your phone
-Browse the folder where you extracted the rom
-Choose flash all option and the bottom right corner
-Flash the rom
-If it finished, then the phone reboots, if not, then you hold the power button for 10 sec.
Well, that worked! I still have no idea why (I mean, I know "why", but I haven't cleared quite all of my doubts about how to go around flashing ROMs with Xiaomi) but thanks a bunch!!
BTW for anyone referring to this thread in the future, note that MiFlash might require the extracted ROM to be placed in the root directory of the HDD (can be C:\ or D:\ or whatever as long as it is not in a subfolder). I got an error at the beginning but managed to solve it that way.
I hope I can get some help here. Today I started getting add pop-ups on my Xiaomi MI5 that's 3 days old. I installed a lot of applications, but they have all been previously installed on my HTC Desire 500 and my Nexus 7 and I never had any issues. The adds pop up after I unlock the screen, sometimes it's just a Home screen that's not responding (until I hit the Back button), sometimes it's a full add. Adds vary a lot and change from Pokemon training spam to Anti-spyware apps. On some adds it said it's sponsored by "StartApp". On one add there was an information button, so I got some message from "com.aqplay.mediation" about permission settings (nothing really relevant, couldn't uncheck anything anyways).
After scanning the phone with Avast, MBAM and Addons Detector, I got nothing. I also went through a crapload of forums looking for answers, tried to uninstall some apps that I installed today, but nothing helped.
In the end I noticed that the built-in application "File Manager" keeps ending up in my Recent Applications list, even though I never opened it. So I tried to stop and uninstall it, but with no luck. There is a process that looks suspicious so I would like to ask anyone to check if they have the same process on their device.
Under Settings - Installed apps - Running - File Manager there is a Service (second from the top) called "zdrhhriggx". Can anyone verify they have the same Service running?
Since it's a built in app, I can't Disable or Uninstall File Manager to be 100% sure, but so far I have found a workaround.
In the Security application I went to Data Usage settings - Data usage stats - System apps - File Manager and I disabled it's Mobile and Background data access. I am unable to turn off the WLAN setting for it though. But so far, no adds in the last 30mins.
If anyone has a good permanent solution to this problem (I know I can do a factory reset, but let's make that the last option) I'd be forever grateful.

Fake ROM
I believe you are correct, stupid of me not to check the ROM version. Thank you very much.
You are using Vendor Rom maybe . Unlock your bootloader and flash Official Rom . If you are using root . Install adaway to make some ads dissapear .
Same issue with ads and massive wlan battery drain (vendor rom from xiaomi.eu). unlocked it, flash the official and worked like a charm.

Yup, same here with the WLAN battery drain. But the adds stopped for some reason the last 2 days. I'm planning on flashing it, just not sure which procedure to follow. Can you please tell me if you had to Unlock the device through the MIUI website request?
I've found this thread to be helpful: http://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-5/how-to/xiaomi-eu-7-8-13-0-maacndb-t3412638
I'm just not clear on the difference between flashing with the fastboot update (MIUI flashing tool) or using Mi PC Suite with Full ROM?
Would you be so kind as to provide more precise steps on what you did to unlock and flash it?

hence i downloaded the Global ROM from Miui for 5s - 8.0.3.0 MAGMIDI "normally". now while trying this, it says "i am updating to a older version & all data will be lost". is it possible to really have a newer version on phone which isnt there in MIUI website?
or something is wrong?

Since we are assuming you are on a fake ROM with ads, I'd certainly flash the official ROM, no matter what the fake one says.

Thank you Guojaun for your timely help.
i successfully flashed to GLOBAL ROM.
while i was doing this, there was no folder called "Downloaded_rom" for the ROM to put, i created a folder & put the ROM there. then flashing will go through normally. no need of Fastboot or anything.
Now no ads or any sort of issues

so I have the same problem with you. Same phone (mi 5s plus) with same android version (6.0.1 MXB48T), and MIUI Version (8.0.6.0.0 M8GCNDH)
I'm about to "update" my phone, and I'm just wondering if I need to wipe my phone data first, or everything will be wipe out on this process?
I have been using my Huawei Honor 5C for 6 month. Week ago, I decided to try updating my firmware from android 6 to 7. I have bricked my phone at all, as FRP was locked. I bought a DC Phoenix license and flashed some files, which I recieved from DC Support.
Everything was OK, but two days ago I tried to root my phone and install TWRP. When I try to do that, it gives me:
Fastboot: FAILED (remote: image verification error)
Contacting with DC Support doesnt give any help, as they dont know why it happens.
Did smb has the same problem as mine? If so, how did you solve it? I dont wanna buy DC license for a second time

You probably messed up like me.
I think you should download full update of the 6.0 firmware and then ^take out^ boot.img recovery.img. And system.img. Then install it through adb. 1.boot 2.recovery 3.system. It should help.
Someone told me about it in Nem-L21 Nougat tread.
I left my in Huawei seewis centre. They exchanged motherboard - it Was easiet way for them.

I have already tried it. I downloaded NEM-L51C432B130 FullOTA, unzipped it using Huawei Extractor app and flashed boot, cust, system, recovery and recovery2. After that, i rebooted my phone and had a critical error screen, which said me that I need to flash system partition (but I have flashed it). I also tried flashing rollback first, but it gives the same error. Finally, I fully flashed beta rom of android 7 and the phone has booted. The problem is that one archive of Android 7 rom has extra "data" folder, which contains system apps such as Bluetooth, Finger Scanner, Update Utility, EMUI Explorer and some others. Without them I cant use my phone, cause I often use these options. This archive with "data" folder needs to be flashed through TWRP, but I cant install TWRP on my phone (see thread question). I know. I has Nexus 7 and it has the easiest way for flashing firmware. I dont understand why Google (or Huawei for EMUI) didnt preinstalled a small extended board with stock ROM for rescue purpose. So that, if somebody bricked his phone, he could be able to fastly rescue his phone and make it work. The worst problem of fastboot is that fastboot partition can be damaged, while you flash something. Anyway, android devs are better made FRP lock, which is useless and can be easily removed... Or they are better made some new androids every 3-6 month, wow, thats cool (no)
This problem had no solution yet. There is only one way, how I could make my phone fully-workable - wait for a stable ROM of Android 7 abd flash it through fastboot.

I need some help, I have Mi 11 Ultra CN version, I unlocked BL and install the Global Rom using fast boot, I enjoyed it, but battery seems to suck.
I installed MIUI EU 12.5.4 and now that I'm trying to update it to EU 12.5.7.0 within the phone, it tells me my internal memory is encrypted. How can i install the update or decrypt my internal memory. It does not allow me to install the update... any help will be appreciated it..

You can try with Mi flash (dont relock bootloader)
MIUI EU 12.5.4 not EEA but CN version
Set a lock screen lock, then go to twrp and use it to unlock and decrypt the storage
i was able to install twrp and that did the trick, BTW what's the downsize of installing twrp as my boot recovery... it's been a while since I mess with a phone but now my google messages says network not ready when sending a picture message, but i can received them, if I use the stock message app, I don't have any issues at all

There is no downsize. You are only replacing stock recovery with a different version. It has no affect on your phone, it's and your own data. It just makes it easier to flash custom or even returning to stock if required as well as other tools offered in the TWRP package.

Installing twrp doesn't install root. It just replaces the system recovery. If you really want root, use Magisk but I've not found any reason to root my phone for ages.

Hello!
the latest MIUI update I've received, 13.0.17.0.SKFMIXM, is not owrking as good as the one I was using, namely 13.0.16.0.SKFMIXM.
I've found and downloaded the 3.41 GB and something full rom and the OTA update of 266.39 MB.
I've tried with each one the following procedure:
rename the file to update.zip
copy it into the root folder of the phone
tap various time on the miui 13 logo to get the "select update package menu"
...every time it says that can't verify the update package, try via usb.
I was so happy with the 10.0.16.0. what can I do? I fear that a factory restore and a subsequent update will bring it back to 13.0.16.0.
Thank you in advance for the help.

Google fastboot flash with PC or recovery flash via custom Recovery.
For both the bootloader has to be unlocked. In my opinion there's no other way to rollback .
I've downloaded the right version (EEA) and now I'm getting the message "impossible to downgrade".
ahahah. this is so stupid.
I had a nice, fully working phone, now it's back to garbage and I can't rollback. starting from the battery usage - now I can't activate the battery saver and the drop down menu is transparent and unreadable unless i turn off the battery saver.
My only option is to navigate a jungle of fake infos and obscure downloads to flash the phone - since there is no clear guide. I might be wrong; if there is a CLEAR guide on how to properly flash a Redmi Note 10 Pro, where can I find it?
Cheers.

Downgrading using the rename trick is not possible now due to OTA validation. But still, downgrading is still possible as long as the bootloader is unlocked (you can re-lock bootloader afterwards btw so no worry about banking apps).
Procedure might be something similar to this:
1. Unlock bootloader
2. Flash any latest OSS ROM (this is just to remove MIUI)
3. Use MiFlash and fastboot method to install old versions (re-lock if you want)
Alternatively, after No.2 you can directly install the old update through custom recovery and just keep bootloader unlocked. Though this means that you'll have to deal with hiding rooting and passing safetynet.
PS: Just to add, Anti-Rollback is not yet enabled for sweet so no worries with getting bricked while downgrading. Just be careful and flash appropriately.
Thanks for the kind reply, @BigChungus321 . Glad to hear that I can still unlock and lock the bootloader! at least for those 6 months of warranty.
Just one thing, in the step you suggested you said:

In this very moment I've made a backup of all the pictures and a list of all the apps installed, to help googling them again later, in preparation for asking the MIUI lords the permit to unlock my device.
Also, I've a friend who has the same phone but it has never been updated; based on my personal experience, if I'd like her to avoid the issues I've found in 13.0.17.0, would it be safe to tell her to manually update the phone with the "select update package menu"?
wow.
I was ready to unlock the phone, but I forgot to unlock the "Mi unlock" in the developer options. So I went there and seems that I cannot unlock: I keep receiving the message "connect to the netwrok and try again".
Am I missing some piece of information here?

It is the same but I do encounter people who face anti-rollback error rejecting the downgrade if flashing from MIUI to MIUI. But going from OSS to MIUI, this arb check does not seem to occur.

No clue if that prevents the issue/bug you encounter. I usually just dirty flash the full rom update (not the incremental which is around ~200mb) in recovery and I don't seem to get issue this way, aside from recovery being replaced because dm-verity is getting activated again.

I've seen many people who have this issue too. Again, no clue how to fix this. Maybe reboot, and just enable mobile data. Try changing sim card or switching sim card slots. Use other Mi Account for unlocking. I did see discussions about how using the same sim card and same Mi account can on a different device can cause this. I still have no clue how to fix this though so sorry. Might be a good idea to use a fresh sim card and mi account if you still encounter it.
