Hey everyone, relatively new user here. This is my first post. I've recently changed from BlackBerry to the Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant offered from Bell. It's a fantastic phone and I don't miss BlackBerry one bit.
A question though regarding the phones front facing camera. I have downloaded a few apps that should be able to utilize the front facing camera in the phone, however it does not look like I am able to use it. My guess is Bell has locked it so customers need to purchase the video chat package they have. Is it possible to unlock this camera some how? I have achieved root on my phone.
I have searched the forums for a possible solution, but I have found nothing.
It's usable out of the box for me - try the mirror app from the market.

That mirror app seems to work. Have you been able to get any of the video chat applications (like Fring) to use it? I just can't seem to figure it out. Trying to find a good application to video chat with my cousins and their iPhones.
Fring works fine for me on JM5
^With the front facing camera? Is JM5 one of the North American ROMS or Europe ones?
Fring is broken on the galaxy s. It uses the camera on the back of the phone rather than the front facing one. There is a big thread on their support forums. If you go on the camera there is a self shot mode that uses it.

Is there no way to use the front camera in an actual video chat capacity... short of paying Bell?
There isn't even a way to pay bell to use it.
This thread is barking up the wrong tree, it is not Bells fault that fring is broken. Complain to fring that is what I did. They say they are working on it, but its two weeks now with no feedback.

that blows my mind samsung would make a phone with a front facing camera with no real capability to use it.
Er, the stock camera app works just fine...
Samsung does not make the video chat software, nor should they. If they did you would likely end up with the crippled bs that is Apple factetime.

If you don't mind using plain SIP VoIP for video chat (your friends will need to use a similar app or hunt around for SIP to whatever (Skype, MSN, etc) gateways, you may want to have a look at Sipdroid by i.p.tel (website, AppBrain link). It should support switching between front and back cameras from the video preview.
Their demo video shows video call working, but last time I tried it on my Galaxy S, the app crashed as soon as I chose send video.
Don't let that put you down, Sipdroid is open source and the outfit that supports it is much smaller and more agile than the big mastodonts like Skype&Co and their staff and community seem pretty keen on making it work well, so if you have problems, just report them on the bug tracker.

Sipdroid routes audio through the back speaker, not the earpiece... which makes it unusable.
This is a known issue (link).
If it affects you, maybe you can add your comment to it so the devs may take notice. If you are a developer or know someone who is, maybe you can even help fix the problem

Dude you need to read these posts better, this has nothing to do with Samsung as the camera works fine in several apps as many people have posted. There is currently a problem with FRING (FRING NOT SAMSUNG/BELL) that defaults the video chat to the back camera, if you check around you will see this is a well documented problem that Fring is working on.
i have used fring on sgs, to make video calls and it works with data plan or wifi. fring to fring users can make calls between each other , skype support has been taken out.
I am on a T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant SGH-T959, and the hardware is clearly present.
It appears as though the hardware is there. There are two small sensors, front-facing on the top left hand corner. The one just to the right is oblong and appears to be the ambient light sensor, and the other to the left is circular and looks like a camera lens. So is this another case similar to the 802.11n & FM Tuner being disabled until the release of Froyo?

No those are the light sensor and proximity sensors. The camera is off to the right on the i9000.
Fring works fine for my front camera on JM5 and now JM6. When using the stock Bell FW though it would only use the back one.
@deception: so you can confirm that fring works on front cam with JM5 firmware? are you using a Bell galaxy s?
coz i am currently on JH2 and it only uses the back camera. if so, i'll try flashing to JM5 when i get home...

I'm looking for an application which will allow me to record voice calls (input and output).
I'm using samsung galaxy S with 2.2 Froyo.
Tried to look for one in here, but didn't find one that would fit my phone.
I even googled it, and didn't find anything appropriate.
If someone has some app that is confirmed as working - plz post the name/apk.
PLZ HLP!
Thanx!
Search 'record call' on appbrain. Quite some results.
Nothing working yet to my knowledge (for our phone that is)...

I looked into this some time ago. Some android phones will allow you to record both sides of the call. It would seem that with most android phones, you can only record your side of the conversation. It may be a bug in Android since there is apparently the functionality that allows recording calls. On the other hand, it could also be a hardware issue where the incoming voice stream is not accessible to the OS, so there is no way to record it unless you use an external recording device. The Hero for example use the Qualcomm MSM 7200A which has the baseband chip integrated into the main application processor. The Galaxy S has a separate baseband chip. Depending on how the incoming voice stream is handled on the hardware level, it is possible that android OS has no direct access to the voice stream since that is handled by the baseband cpu.
Anyways, after spending a few hours reading up on this topic, voice recording is possible on some android handsets, and not others. I was using the nexus one when I was looking into this (interestingly, the nexus one snapdragon has an integrated baseband like the Hero). Most solutions meant using the phone in speakerphone to record both sides of the conversation which is not a great solution in my opinion.
That's the extent of my research. It's something that would be useful to me, but not something that I have a strong need for. If anyone has a working solution for the Galaxy S, please share!
I am trying to get the remote viewfinder app provided by Samsung on Google Play Store to work with this camera (linking up to my Galaxy Note II) but it just doesn't work.
Spent some time talking to a tech support guy at Samsung, but although he was friendly, he didn't have any knowledge of this model (!)
Has anyone managed to get this feature working?
Apparently the EK-GCAM100 is not on the list of supported devices. Wait for a bit and the software may be updated. This is for Samsung's lineup of smart cameras(wifi-enabled basic camera) not Galaxy Cameras.

Thanks Adam, I did see them using a Galaxy S3 in the Ads to control the camera, so I guess it's an upcoming feature. Hope it's not too long as this was one of the features I really need.
Glad I'm Not The Only One
I've been trying to figure out how to control the SG Camera with my SGIII as well. Hope this is added to the remote viewfinder app soon.

There is an app called Camera Remote https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.busywww.cameraremote on the Play Store, it does work with this camera but is not wholly reliable and has crashed a couple of times. I was told by Samsung tech support that the official app will support this camera soon though.

I too have been trying to find this feature. I purposely bought this camera because of this feature (& others). I recently updated over the air on my camera to Android version 4.1.2 from 4.1.1. Now in the camera app under the share menu, is the 'Remote viewfinder' feature. I select this and it asks me to connect my smartphone to the Wi-Fi hotspot that it's created so it can open the app on my phone. I do this but nothing happens. Any idea's what is wrong? My phone is the Galaxy S3. But atleast the feature IS now on the camera, it just won't work on mine.
I noticed the option appears on the camera since updating the ROM. I tried to get this working with no success. I believe the Remote Viewfinder app that Samsung have in the Play Store needs updating. If we raise a support ticket on their website as I have done they may start looking into it sooner.
I really want this feature badly too.

it's weird that Samsung can not find a quick solution to this problem.
Both devices are their production (SIII and GC)
Just found that there is an update avaliable for the 'Remote Viewfinder' app in the Play Store. But in the 'What's New' box it just states: "Improved compatibility for smart phone". Which is rather vague. I updated and I still cannot get it to work. Just thought I'd let you know. Anybody else have anything to add?
Report it!
Anyone wishing to be able to use this feature should head over to Samsung's support pages and add a support ticket. If enough people vent their frustration over this then maybe something will get done. After all, the "Share to Remote Viewfinder" is an option when taking pictures with this camera so it SHOULD work.
I raised the issue and got this reply:
"Thank you for contacting Samsung.
I am sorry your camera is not working with the Remote Viewfinder, I
understand this is frustrating if my colleagues on the phone support
were meant to get back to you.
I have raised the problem with our product specialist who will deal
directly with Samsung HQ on getting this problem solved, he has promised
to get back to me as soon as possible.
I would ask that you be patient with us and email back in approximately
one week so that we can update you on the situation.
I apologise for the inconvenience this has caused."
A week has passed so I will be chasing it up.
So get your support request in too today! .. http://www.samsung.com/uk/support/model/EK-GC100ZWABTU
Hey everyone:
I have been installing and uninstalling lots of apps and widgets to determine what works on the Galaxy Gear Smartwatch. I've got my Gear Null Rom'med and connected to a Galaxy Note 1 Phone. Since I am not giving up my Note 1, the Galaxy Gear looked to be my only choice thanks to the work of the NULL ROM developer. Mostly everything on the Gear works-- except notifications, weather, and third-party contact apps. I'm looking forward to the SMS developments going on in another thread. My partner also has the same phone and Gear, so I've got two mouths to feed!
Otherwise, these are the best apps for the Gear 1 that I have found so far. I am learning some new stuff too, so there may be a part two in the near future.
Please comment, looking forward to your feedback, and I salute all of the developers who are continuing to hack the Gear device. Thanks guys!

Great to see another Torontonian using the same watch/phone combo that I am! What a fantastic and informative video as well...I can't wait to get home and try out that remote media controller as I have my note automatically connect to a decent set of Bluetooth speakers when I walk in the door. It'll be really cool to control the music from anywhere in the house..
I noticed that you are using a stock touchwizz ROM on your note. What version of gear manager are you using and with what degree of effectiveness? I am using an AOKP kitkat ROM on my note that I absolutely love and don't think I could tear myself from but I may just nandroid and try stock if you tell me that there is greater functionality..
Great video! Nicely edited and covers a lot of mysterious capabilities n features that aren't immediately obvious to beginners-including myself. Nicely done!
PS: Love Google Goggles and Price Rythem for instant product information, nutritional facts, reviews, current pricing! Either scan the bar code or take a picture of the item, and your done!
Runner up would be Pie Controls to quicky access your favorite apps. from your watch face.

Hey fellow Torontonian! Does the KitKat ROM on your Note 1 allow you to keep the S Pen features?
I can only get to Gear Manager 1.2 and basically none of the notifications work-- the Gear Manager is only able to open the Contact app on the phone. The Gear's camera app does transfer photos to the phone automatically. Nothing else works in Gear Manager. I can't give up S Note on the phone, so it hasn't been rooted since Samsung released a JB update a year ago. I wish that SMS and email notifications could work but--- but there's not really any other smartwatch that will work with the Note 1 so I accept these compromises.
Hey Guys (and Gals),
We here at Killer Mobile have been long time fans of the XDA forums, and truly think that both the site administrators and users rock! We also have greatly appreciated the feedback & discussions regarding our products over the years and realize that many of you have assisted in tracking down bugs, proving compatibility on new devices/OS's and suggesting features.
And for this, we want to show our appreciation by giving you a Total Recall Android license absolutely free (price is typically $10) for a very, very limited time. Here's all we ask:
1) Install the app from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.killermobile.totalrecall
2) Confirm it's recording nicely on your device. If it's not, your device may not be capable of two sided call recording, however please contact us anyways at [email protected] and we'll do our best to troubleshoot unless it's a device known not to record
3) Visit http://killermobile.com/staykillerpromo/
4) Input your IMEI (no dashes, slashes or spaces) AND Keyword XDAROCKS
5) Enjoy Total Recall Call Recorder! You can show your appreciation by giving us a positive Play Store review.
6) Please do NOT publicize this promotion outside of the XDA forums, as this promo is specifically for XDA, and there's only a limited number of free licenses available. Once the promotion ends, we'll update this thread.
Important Notes:
* Only one free license per IP
* Free license is not transferable to a new device.
* We're limiting this to 500 licenses per day, so please check back the following day if the alloted licenses have been exhausted
Feel free to post any and all feedback, but please, please keep in mind that some devices simply don't support full, 2-sided call recording. With that said, Total Recall does in fact record calls on more devices than almost any competing app (Skvalex is about the only other developer that truly puts effort into rooted recording options, and unfortunately the Play Store is littered with Call Recorders that do nothing more than record from the Mic), and offers a wide range of rooted call recording methods/options for compatible devices.
There's also a known issue on some devices updated to Lollipop where "OK Google" is creating a conflict. You can get around this by disabling OK Google "on all screens", however we're working on our own internal work around.
Cheers!

Hey Guys, just a heads up that we've been busy updating Total Recall with not only additional great new features, but also to ensure that we truly record calls on more devices than ANY competing app. I'm certain right now we do!
Total Recall Call Recorder now supports call recording on UNROOTED Moto E/G/X devices (even when updated to 6.0/Marshmallow), as well as most Huawei devices, many new HTC & Sony models as well. This isn't some native call recording technique that the hundreds of call recorder apps are using, this is a proprietary technique that you won't find on any of the apps you find at the top of the Play Store search.
We've also improved our rooted compatibility to hundreds of additional models, many which will now support full call recording capabilities even when using a Bluetooth headset.
Combine that with our new Whatsapp share feature, Google Drive Sync and the support of nearly 20 languages and I think you'll find there is quite simply no better product around.
However, keeping with the theme of this post, although this special offer is expired, I'll be publishing a new post about an upcoming Game we're working on, which will give you an opportunity to obtain a free Total Recall license in exchange for some feedback. However certainly feel free to post any Total Recall related feedback here, including any compatibility issues you may run into and we'll be happy to support you.
Cheers!
Josh @ Killer Mobile
