Well my 3T after days of "Pending Shipment" is on the way and luckily, Stable Nougat is out!
So I had some questions about recovery in preparation.
1. In OnePlus's stock recovery, is there a way to mount storage? I ask because basically, while I'm still waiting for my phone to arrive, I'd download the Nougat Rom and as soon as I receive the phone, boot into recovery, mount storage, get the file and then flash the Update to have a completely clean install.
2. If it's not possible to mount storage in recovery and I have to setup the phone, I'd just put the Update on the phone's storage after setup and would then, be able to do a clean install from the stock recovery right?
Just wanted some clarification as I think just having the update ready to go would save me time of actually downloading the update.
Thank You and Happy New Year
The internal storage is mounted automatically in stock recovery.
Apart from that, if you want to reinstall your system, download the full rom. The ota will only work when your system partition is untouched.
Also, why do you want to re-setup your phone? If you do not want to redownload your update, do not do a factory reset.

I think you misunderstood, I don't have it yet it's on the way.
I have the 1.4gb Nougat rom and what I'm saying is that instead of setting up the phone and then waiting for Nougat to download and etc,
as soon as I get, boot into recovery and just install Nougat to save myself time while doing a clean install at the same time and moving from there.
But you answered my question about storage being mounted in recovery, thanks.

I think it would be best if you would just sideload the ota package

THIS IS FOR I9020T ONLY! IF YOU DECIDE TO GET BRAVE AND TRY THIS ON AN I9020A, I9023 OR D720, MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU. I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE CAUSED TO ANY PHONE BY USING THIS ROM.
YOU MUST FLASH THIS ROM USING CLOCKWORKMOD RECOVERY. THIS WILL NOT FLASH USING THE STOCK ANDROID 3E RECOVERY AS THE ZIP FILE IS NOT SIGNED. I HAVE NOT TESTED IT ON OTHER RECOVERIES.
This is probably more for posterity now than anything else, however I have created a CWM-flashable full on ROM for the original Nexus S Gingerbread firmware, version 2.3, build GRH55. This is built exactly the same way that the full OTA ROM packages for 2.3.3 and 2.3.4 were built.
Some notes:
1. Since GRH55 did not include the script that automatically overwrites alternate recovery images with the stock one (this was introduced in GRH78/2.3.1), flashing this ZIP will flash the stock Android 3e recovery that came with GRH55. This means that ClockworkMod Recovery will go away after flashing this ZIP and you will need to re-flash it manually if you want it back.
2. Flashing this ZIP will overwrite your bootloader and radio, restoring them to I9020XXJK1 and I9020XXJK8 respectively. These are the versions that came stock with GRH55.
3. GRH55 is receiving OTA updates. As of this writing, the latest version of Android is 2.3.4, and Google is pushing an OTA update for 2.3 to 2.3.4.
4. This ZIP will NOT clear your user data or cache. For users running a stock ROM, I would highly suggest clearing your data and cache manually as sometimes downgrading without clearing data and cache can cause problems. If you are coming from a non-stock ROM, you are required to clear your data and cache or the ROM will not boot.
5. The market app works just fine but does not update to the current style and look. The market app that comes with GRH55 is version 2.12, which is the look that's now 2 generations old. For whatever reason, Google no longer allows version 2.12 to update to newer versions. That said, if you install a later version of the Android Market (3.0.27 as of this writing) manually, it will update to future versions automatically.
6. Since writing NFC tags wasn't introduced until GRI40/2.3.3, the Tags app is read-only.
7. There is no video chatting through Google Talk. This feature was not introduced until GRJ22/2.3.4.
Instructions:
1. Download the Stock GRH55 ROM package here.
2. Copy it to the root of your USB storage.
3. Reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery (or flash it).
4. Select "Install ZIP From SD Card"
5. Select "Choose ZIP"
6. Find the ZIP file and select it.
7. Wait for it to finish.
8. Wipe data and cache (optional but HIGHLY recommended for stock ROM users and REQUIRED for non-stock ROM users)
9. Reboot and have fun.
Reserved...just in case.

For whatever reason, Google forces GRH55 to stay with 2.12. You may be able to root the ROM and then upload a newer version into /system/app and overwrite 2.12 entirely, but do so at your own risk. If you want the latest version of the market (2.3.6 as of this writing), you can get it here.

NEWBIE HERE. Just to be clear, my phone has to be rooted to do this, right?
Not necessarily. You just need to have ClockworkMod recovery installed. That is independent from having root.

Isn't that related to ROM Manager? ROM Manager is saying my phone has to be rooted to use it.

Again, it can be. Or you can unlock your bootloader (you can find threads on how to do that, it's very simple) and then flash clockworkmod manually. Basically, you need ClockworkMod in order to root, but the two are not synonymous.

Problem. Unlocking the bootloader deletes USB storage. Kinda don't want that. Not being able to access my USB data is the reason I'm here in the first place. I know there's software to back up internal storage but what about SD storage? Of course on this phone there's no SD card to remove.

I would just plug the phone into your computer via USB and copy everything to your computer, then once you unlock the bootloader, copy it back. That'll take care of your USB storage.

Like I said I lost USB connectivity, from the manual 2.3.4 install, which is why I'm trying to go back to an older version in the first place. No SD card on the NS. Do you know of another way?
try to install a program named websharing.
and you will be able to ftp your phone with you pc.
after that will be easy to transfer your SD data to your PC.

So I decided to try out Ivan's Marshmallow ROM, knowing it would be a bad idea... I backed everything but the photos which were 2.5GBs and was too lazy to copy over. I wiped cache, but not user data, copied ROM to phone, rename to update.zip and updated through recovery(stock). Now it's stuck on booting and want to know if there is any way to recover my photos.
Keep in mind there is a functional MIUI ROM inside but it is named differently than update.zip so I don't know how to flash it. It turns on, boots on fastboot and recovery but can't do much... I could wipe it, but I need the photos....
Thanks in advance.

Assuming that you haven't yet extended partitions, stock phone has 2 system partitions. So if you're using system 1, boot using system 2 and vice versa. AFAIK, if you flash stock miui using MiTools, it wouldn't erase the storage on the phone.
The second partition seems unable to boot as well...
Anyway, if found out I could install twpr through fastboot, from where I could mount the sdcard.
As far as MiTools are concerned, last time I tried it, I think it erased everything.
The thread can be closed. Thanks!

An easy fix to be able to fix the can't mount data after you install any oreo roms
If you installed any oreo rom and you decided to go back to nougat from a usb otg sideload and you still want to keep all your data afetr install the rom but keeps saying unencrypted unsuccessful, and won't let you boot to android.
Just install omni oreo rom from an external device and you'll be able to acces your data and go back to nougat without wiping you internal storage
I'm going to search for the rom but if you have a link to the Oreo Omni build I would greatly appreciate it. I installed an AOSO Oreo build and even thought I am unencrypted and can see my internal stage in the rom, my data partition (in TWRP) won't mount so I can't do anything right now. And I really want to get the heck out of Oreo until it's a bit more stable.
Thank you for the tip

Yes, thank you. I had an issue getting anything into my device to flash since I couldn't see my internal storage while in TWRP. I could see everything just fine while booted to system thought.
I ended up adb pushing the stock firmware over onto my device and going back to stock. Then just started all over again. I will be leaving Oreo alone until this issue gets fixed...lol
You could have install it from a USB
I'm fairly sure my USB port is broken (after 3 weeks), my phone charges "slowly" (10 hours to fully charge) and my PC won't recognise my phone at all, even in ADB/fastboot. I'm trying to send it back for a warranty repair, but I want to try get it back to stock to see if that solves the problem and then if not for the warranty repair.
Currently on lineageos, rooted with TWRP. I'm wondering if it's possible to flash a stock rom image using TWRP to achieve this? Possibly using one from this list
One of these from the link says "recovery", would this be the one to go for? If so, how would I keep the .zip on my storage after a wipe, or would I not need to wipe?
Sorry for the long post, wanted to give as much info as possible!
Cheers
Bump?
Clean Flash Recommended
Wipe Dalvik System Data and Cache
Flash Stock Rom Beta/Stable
..
first use the wipe menu and then select the rom file and swipe to confirm the flas in sd card just open zip and swipe to confirm Flash.
..
if in bw copying the rom if it stuck in the middle and then close it self or while flashing it say "zip is corrupt"
make sure you have enough space and get the stock rom zip from Official Source.
GooD Luck.

Thanks for the reply, is it possible to save the rom somewhere that it won't get deleted after a wipe? I don't have an external SD card slot. I'm a little scared because if I get it wrong I have no USB connection to get anything onto my phone ??*
Hi All
I flashed EU rom and have just got an OTA update of around 4GB. Rather than install automatically, it just downloaded the zip and rebooted into TWRP.
I'm happy to install it using this method by wiping caches and using TWRP install, but would the TWRP method wipe my data so I need to back up?
Sorry for the dumb question lol.
Cheers

No it won't format. Just install ROM, wipe dalvik cache ( as presented to you after flash), then reboot system.
Hi @Sathelp
Thanks for your reply. I'll give it a bash and report back.

All critical data should always be backed up redundantly. Otherwise you will lose data, sooner or latter.
Android crashes are very rare but can happen with little or no warning especially if you're mucking directly with the OS. That lockout is one reason stock Androids are so impervious to crashes.
Well that didn't take long! It's updated like a dream, with all my data intact.
I had a bit of fun finding the zip, as it wasn't in downloads as I expected. File Explorer showed as being in / in MIUI which of course, is /sdcard/ in TWRP. Anyway, zip loaded, flashed and now I know how to do it for the next update!
Cheers

NO, the data is only wiped when your internal storage has to be formated, like going from the stable to the weekly.
