Looking for advice on how to change default phone dialer - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hello,
I am trying to change my default dialer from stock to another phone app but it does not work. Even though you are able to change the default in app settings the phone will still go back to default even if you disable the stock phone app. It appears I will need to root but I do not know exactly what I would need to do next? Is there a component I would need to get rid of or mofify like callui?
The reason behind this is the stock phone UI does not pass notifications through android wear nor contact info to my watch. I was able to prove this by temp using another phone app that sent notification to my watch before it reverted back to the stock app.
Any help would be appreciated
Thank you

This should work.
Go to Settings -> Apps -> click on the cog in the top right corner -> Default Apps -> select your preferred dialer

Sadly it does not work. If someone calls you it still defaults to the stock dialer. I also went in and disabled the phone app and it still uses the stock app :/

You might need the google dialer framework, not sure. I think it is not included in the stock rom, so if another app uses it and you don't have it... said app won't work. Might not be that at all, just my 2cents. xD

Cant use Samsung Kiev after rooting or lagfix

For some reason, i cant use samsung Kiev anymore. Not sure because of after rooting or lagfix..
anyone have any idea to fix this?
Are you useing an alternative launcher like LauncherPro? Kies connection only works with Touchwiz.
Why would you want to use Kies?
And as above posted said, you have to be using the TouchWiz launcher to have Kies connect.
u r right!!!
i am using laucherpro
now i have no idea how to get back to the original...
i need to use it to transfer files.

Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Apps and find Launcher Pro. Select it and you will find a button to turn it off as default.

You can use an app from the market to switch quickly to another homescreen app too, without changing the default. Can't remember the exact name, something like "home switcher", with a square icon with two arrows pointing in opposite directions.
Yes, that's the Home Switcher you are talking about. kelvin1704 use it, it switches home screens and works with Kies
thanks guys. it works!
lol, if u just wanted to transfer files, connect it as a mass storage device lol

[Q] Moto Droid 2.2 applications

I recently picked up a droid w/2.2 and when I goto manage the applications and in the section where you have the option to "clear defaults" evey single app and I've checked, the option is grayed out . Now there is only one I really want to change but for the life of me I can't ( stock messaging for handcent). So any one have any insight as to why they are all this way?
Anyone? I've searched here and the web and I can't find anything
over 222 views and nothing...
Maybe the reason you can't clear defaults is because it hasn't been set as a default for anything.
Did you even install the Handcent SMS App before trying to clear defaults for the stock Mms app?
Yes I did install Handcent, as well other apps and there is no effect to either the stock app or the app that Ive downloaded and installed to repace it.
Ive even gone as far as re-flashing, factory wipe, ect...thinking it was a bad build and still no effect

[Q] how to change the default program for some actions?

Hi,
I want to change the defualt program assignment for the Samsung Galaxy. I can't find it on the phone.
I installed Dialer One, and when I missed a few calls, I got a pop up window asking me what program do I want to see the missed calls (Dialer One or the SGS dialer), I chose DIaler one, but for some reason it crashes when I need to check the missed calls.
The thing is I can't find the place to change it back to the regular Android Dialer....
Help, anyone?
Thx,
Roy
Go to settings, applications, manage applications and then select your application in question, under there is a section to clear the defaults. That should do the trick
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Thank you very much!
i do that but the button is there but can't click on it

That means that you haven't set that application as default or there is only one application that can perform the concerned action.. like if you have only one launcher you won't be able to clear its defaults but if you have more than one installed you'll have the option of clearing the defaults.

I can only deny security requests.

I really just noticed this when I installed a couple apps that use location and file data. When I launch the app I get the "Allow app to use your location?" with the Deny and Allow selections both there. However I can only tap Deny. Allow isn't greyed out but nothing happens when I tap it. I've searched a bit for this issue but haven't found a cause/fix. I'm completely stock right now. Went stock for dev preview but am back on 6.0.1 (MMB30J).
Help me XDA, you're my only hope.
If I have to I guess I can bust out the toolkit and go back to root/
Back to root w/twrp and same issue. Guess it's more of a Android OS thing than a root thing.

Did you check the settings menu for the app concerned?
Settings - Apps - <select> - Permissions
(eventually 3dots menu)

Well apparently that works. Didn't even think about setting permissions manually. Thanks a ton!

I've encountered this problem too but it was related to CF.Lumen overlay preventing activate allow button. Lux did the same. IF you have a similar app installed :
Settings > Apps > Gear icon (top right) > Draw over other apps > select cf.lumen, lux, etc and disable overlay perm. This also interfered with grant / deny root perms. Some Layers may also interfere.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I have a few that draw over. I'll have to see which one or more are causing the problem.
Thanks for the info. I'll update once I figure out which one it is.
I had the same issue and turned out to be File Manager HD by Cheetah Mobile
I just went through all my apps and File Manager HD was the culprit for me as well.

Stock Contact app crashing when I want to view a number

Good morning all. I don't know if anyone has come across or knows of a solution to this annoying problem.
Basically, the stock contacts app (by Samsung) crashes when I want to view details of a contact. You can open the program and it shows you the list of names, but if you want to open it up to call or text then it crashes. It's annoying as I cant use my call log as a point of returning calls. I've had to download Google Contacts to overcome some of the problems.
Is there any way of uninstalling it and reinstalling it as I know it's integrated into the dialer app too. Or does someone use an alternate dialer/address app that's simple and clean? No fancy themes or additional features.
Thanks all!

I've had similar issues with the stock dialer and messaging app. Sometimes they'll just freeze and only rebooting the phone will get them working again. Interested to hear if anyone has some sort of a fix as well.
I looked on the comments of the contacts app on the Samsung marketplace and other note 8 users had the same issue. So it's not just us.
Hmm.. tested over and over.. no problems what so ever
I had the same issue with the stock contacts app on my Note8 and here's how I fixed it. Go to Settings > Apps > Contacts > click the vertical ... in the top right corner > Uninstall updates. I hope this works for others too.
Edit: Unfortunately, this may only be a temporary fix.
Are you using any theme overlays? Substratum? If you are uninstall and try again.

This worked for me - thank you
It seems as though the latest update has fixed the crashing. My phone updated itself and I think the bug has been squashed.
