Lumia 521 WP internals - Windows Phone 8 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
2 months ago i bought a Lumia 521 for just 24$ in eBay it is great but the last week i got kinda boring and i want to change the device , play with it !! (like get root access , install costum rom etc.)
I started googling for development and installing custom roms in it and every search result shows me WP Internals
-So i installed in my laptop and i want to try now getting root access and installing custom roms and other stuff!
But before i get into the game i want to ask some questions:?:
Q1. I enable root access what after that , how can i get the tweaks that Heathcliff74 is saying in his website!
Q2. Where can i find custom roms for my device! And step by step how to basiclly install them!
---------------
NOTE : I TAKE ALL THE RISKS AND IF YOU TELL ME HOW TO ROOT AND OTHER STUFF YOU DON'T TAKE RESPONSIBILITY
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hope there is a good mind that can help me!!
@Heathcliff74
BTW sorry if i am making a duplicate thread or i categorized it wrong!!
Sorry for my bad english is not my mother tongue!!!

Right now, there are no 'working' custom ROMs for Lumia 52X-devices. There is a project underway on XDA to put Cyanogenmod 13 on this device and they have made excellent progress so far, but the WiFi/2G/3G/Bluetooth/Camera don't yet work. They'll likely work eventually, but no idea how long this will actually take. Other than that, nothing else is available to my knowledge. Recommend waiting for now to install unless you absolutely don't need the device.

What about my first question! What after getting root access , what can i do with my phone!

when can we expect custom ROM's ???

guys, i cant wait to install custom ROM on my tattoo. i hardly congratulate those who worked really hard in getting this tattoo rooted...
but whats the real use when we cant play with this little device without exploiting it fully .....
sorry if i am humiliating all those who are actively involved in the development, but i am little more curious like rest of us. hence i am asking this question here....
roughly how long it will take to produce custom ROM after rooting a device ???
Expect an average development time between two days and one year but it might differ plus/minus 20%...
I understand your impatience but asking things that are already written elsewhere because the truth is reluctantly to believe ("nobody knows how long it will take") doesn't speed up anything! We don't write "We don't know" because we think it is funny to know more then the rest...
-bm-
Could you tell us what is needed for a custom rom? I'm new in android hacking, or mobile hacking in general. All I know is that for WinMo devices you'll need a hardSPL, application unlock and a RUU.
I think there will be less questions if we know what we're waiting for. Time is, at least for me, not really a question since there are numerous wonderful developers here and we all follow progress in the other threads.
For the tattoo we now have root access and r/w access to the file system. What else is needed? A new boot loader, a flash utility, kitchen?
I tried to find it elsewhere in the forum but information is scarce and/or scattered so it's quite hard to find out what is going on. Most information I found are howto's, but what we actually want here in this stage of development are whyto's .
Please, enlighten us

To easily flash ROMs, we'd need a S-OFF Bootloader and also a custom recovery that enables us to actually flash the ROM to the phone.
However, since HTC tried to play 'god' with our Tattoo/Click and bar off any root exploits or custom ROMs, it's tricky. We've had to play around with root, and now we've got the system partition writable, soon we can get flash_image to work.
Myself, I expect to cook a community ROM (CoburnROM 360) when we've got all the tools in place.
Online kitchen/automated tools like the Relentless Rom Roaster is a plus, but not a essential item to have on your arsenal. Real Devs use Linux and the command line!
Now, it's just a matter of playing the wait game. Dream about all the customizations in a ROM you'd like, and when the day has come (it most likely happen in the near future! ), we can plop the update.zip on the MicroSD, reboot into (custom) recovery and let the fun begin.
This is exactly the reason why I'm holding off with making root permanent on mt phone. I'll wait till everything becomes stable and more can be done with root, i.e. installing custom ROMs.

Good idea. Mine at the moment is temp root, I jsut run the exploit and do the export commands to get a shell, instead of hardwriting su in my Tattoo.
is the custom ROM ready ??? i want to test it on my tattoo simultaneously i wanna root it at that time itself... so if you succeed in preparing cooked ROM, pls post it here for testing.
i will test it for you.... cant wait for its release... keeping my fingers crossed coburn.....

The more you refuse to spend even 3 or 4 minutes to read through the forum, the longer you will have to wait for a custom ROM because you are stealing our time to develop one because we have to answer senseless posts. This time I won't post the link you are looking for because it will take you around 10 seconds to find Coburn64's thread - its just one view!
-bm-
@bm, there is no link for downloading a custom ROM buddy, i saw coburn's thread..... but there is no mention of when we can expect custom ROM.....
anyway, i thought you might be knowing the approximate date.... ok, i will wait till you receive.... dont waste your time.... carry on with your good work. i appreciate your contribution towards this project..... keep up the good work bro...

how to root phone

My galaxy note kernel version is DXLC2 (malaysia)
Did I need to downgrade my kernel version frist???
I suggest you don't root your phone otherwise it will be too troublesome for you, i.e. do a lot of reading, keep up with development (which also need a lot of reading), fine tuning your custom ROM (which also need a lot of reading), the list will never ends (which unfortunately needs much reading as well!).

Hey danwteik,
Indeed you need to do some further researching before proceed for rooting as I believe you don't want to screw your phone up.
But as long as you're prepared, you're OK. Am too a newbie to Android and after lots of research, I've successfully root & flash my phone to custom rom as well.
Just follow this guide from Ashwin, great step by step guide and you won't need to worry much as you can proceed as per the video:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cJjh6gi0Spw
Just like the firmware from the video, go download it from Dr Ketan's thread:

questions regarding root
hi all xda guys,
I am new to droid and love it thus far...
after having my galaxy note for a few weeks and doing some reading, ive decided i want to root my phone to have the best working phone possible HOWEVER im completely clueless when it comes to being this technologically adept. so i hae a few questions as follow:
1. ive read the root thread and see that there are a few different options for rooting, in everyones opinion which is the best / easiest to perform the most basic root to unlock my phone, root it and be able to install custom items.
2. CWM i assume means clock work mod...what is this mod exactly? and why is it important to install along with the root?
3. my phone settings read that my kernel version is 2.6.35.11..one rooting option i believe requires you finding out which kernel your running and they list kernels as kk## etc. how do i figure out exacty which kernel I am if it only reads the previously listed kernel version?
4. what exactly does it mean when someone told me theyre going to instal custom kernels? ( i have a friend who just bought and rooted a new Samsung GS2 and im curious as to what this means)
5. i've read the rooting directions and watched videos posted and googled my brains out...does anyone know where i can go to find the most basic and simplest explanation and directions for rooting my GN? (if youre reading and got this far and saying the explaination in the root thread IS THE EASIEST it can be....i need something dumbed down to the level a 2 year old can understand....this stuff is mind-boggling confusing for me for some reason i cant wrap my head around the process or the concept)
6. i basically want to root my phone for these reasons
- to figure out and manage to make my phone use less running ram to run faster
- to be able to install or customize the phone to make my battery last longer
- to be able to do whatever it takes to tether my phone without having to pay for it in my data plan
-to be able to install or whatever it is that allows me to customize my phone (themes, fonts, icons, etc)
- to use my phone worldwide on different carriers without having to pay for unlocking, buying other sim cards etc.
- to install or whatever to have my phone do amazingly cool stuff. (this isnt as important as 1-5 but hey who doesnt want a phone that can do everything and then some?
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SOMEONE HELP! i've googled it and asked friends and even have contacted someone on craigslist who offers a service for a nominal fee. but im smart and smart enough technologically speaking that i can figure it out.
i just need someone to sit down with me and explain everything step by step and answer my questions. PLEASE i'm willing to do anything and everything possible to learn and re-pay someone for their awesome-ness and sharing their intelligence.
someone something, please help a fellow user out.
*i'd even go so far as to pay-pal someone a few bucks or bake you a cake and ship it to you. im that serious.
please guys,
XDA rocks, droid rocks, YOU rock, just help me out...i've spent 5 days trolling xdas forums and other sites and forums and have just gotten more confused. someone dumb this down for me!

Hi,
I just got my Galaxy Note last week and would like to root it. I found the link below and would like to check with you guys first if they really work. I could not post on that thread for I'm a new member. I think some of you have posted in that thread too. Please help.

2.) Can I use Odin3 v1.85?
3.) Can I still unroot after this?
4.) I just need the PDA file to gain root access and ensure No-Wipe?
Thanks in advance.

3.yes, flash with Stock ROM with PC odin, will unroot it.

Hello Friends.
I am very keen on getting started with the Rooting process for my Galaxy Note. I have been reading and trying to comprehend the various methods of achieving root but it seems overwhelming and daunting.
I reiterate what I have stated in another thread, I am an infant in this domain. I feel much too confused presently and thus I humbly request you to please guide me one step at a time.
At the very beginning, I aspire to achieve two motives. They are -
1] Root my device
2] Back up the stock ROM
My device details are :
Model number
GT-N7000
Android version
2.3.6
Baseband version
N7000XXKK5
Kernel version
2.6.35.7-N7000XXKKA-CL726566
[email protected] #2
Build number
GINGERBREAD.XXKKA
I thank you in advance for continuing to have patience with me.

[Q] Nokia Lumia 930 Tools?

Hi guys,
I just converted to Windows phone platform as I previously used a LG G3 Andorid device. I used xda developers alot to Mod my device such as Root Access, Unlock Bootloader, Custom Recovery and install Roms and Kernels.
My question is - Is there the same sort of things for the Windows phone? This forum for Windows 8 isn't as straight forward due to different devices that are all in the one forum " Windows Phone 8 Development and Hacking "..
Could someone point me in the right direction where I may use some developer tools to unlock bootloader etc or install kernels to MOD my Lumia 930? Or is there such thing?
Hope I can get a response...
Thanks in Advanced!
Anything? These threas doesn't get acknowledged much as androids

It's not about the attention these forums get, it's more about all the guys are literally tired answering questions like these ( no pun intended ) .
So basically for now it's a "NO" for all your questions, you can't unlock ( i mean filesystem access ) your phone, and surely can't modify the bootloader, in this aspect WP is not like Android, it's focused on security ( enterprise in mind ).
For more on your question please refer to this thread > The first thread in "Windows Phone 8 Development and Hacking, literally "
Also, as per the rules, please don't bump your thread more than once per 24 hours. 12 hours may seem like a long time to wait for an answer but it's still annoying when people do that. The WP community is a lot smaller than the Android community. On the other hand, as VSparxx points out, you could have had your answer easily with a little research. Currently, hacks for WP8 devices without SD cards are extremely limited. Samsung and Huawei have sort-of-custom ROMs (only limited modifications possible); HTC and Nokia don't even have that.

[Help ! / Scared / Ready to pay] Restored a backup from TWRP and forgot to read

So , hi everyone and thanks for the future people who will help me , also i'm french so sorry if my english is bad i don't use google trad just english lessons ?
I'm gonna explain what i did :
I got my brand new OP3T like last Tuesday was happy to finally try it out and root it to get some app's that require root , i followed carefully and everything went fine ! Yey ( using stock rom )
I did a backup as advised .
had some issues with some app that was saying no root access even if on SuperSU it was granted so i decided to restore the backup .
BUT when i tried to restore it was saying something about " system modifications not allowed please take it ON "
So i allowed system modifications ( by swapping )
BUT i remember from the rooting tutorial + TWRP that instruction
Code:
At this point, you will reach the screen asking you if you want to allow system modifications.
By swiping right, you will trigger dm-verity, and if you don't follow the next step you will be unable to boot!
If you are going to root your device and follow the rest of these steps, then it is safe to swipe right and enable modifications.
So now , i'm locked at the One Plus logo with Powered by android , and tbh i'm pretty scared it's my only phone and i use it everyday and i need it everyday , i'm ready to stay awake for the next 6 hours if someone could help me , i'm ready to pay a few bucks on paypal to say thank you , i really REALLY need help !
( I'm able to access recovery mode ( TWRP one )
Thank you !
Flash supersu via twrp and should be OK

Glad it is fixed. It happens with almost everyone when they start rooting. Anyway! If you want to donate maybe you should buy SuperSu pro from play store which is by the programmer of SuperSu. As a token of appreciation for giving us those apps and fixes. :good:

Rooting will be easier?

Hi everybody!
I just thinked maybe that rooting will be easier, like on old phones with One Click Root or the recovery install package. I love custom roms etc, but I just scared to do it on my S10 and I'm lazy to do all the firmware download, install this, install that etc.
What do you guys think? I will be easier sometime or nah?

one of the great many reasons that some of us appreciate the difficulty level of rooting is to keep the faint of heart away. If youre too lazy, then you might need to reach out to folks who get paid to do this type of stuff for you.
many of us hope that root will always be a chain link fence keeping those who dont feel required to do anything to get access. Dont want to click 12 things on your mouse and type a few characters on a keyboard? Dont root. Simple as that.
Mind you, if you happen to buy a galaxy s10 USA version. You dont have to worry anything!
i have software to install and was told to root my phone before i did it because its a one time only link. is there just an app i can download to do this?
