Hi does anyone know if this phone will support AOSP or Cyanogenmod? I'm not a fan of MIUI.
After some months, yes.
Thanks!

+1 :good:
CM should be able to bring full featured Marshmallow to it (not cut-down version Xiaomi delivers), should have no bloadware, no backdoors and should be able to provide some normal camera app which will fully utilizes provided hardware.

Truly amazing beast with CM, wouldn't need to change phone within at least 1½ year
I already ask @miui forum:

Thread instant closed :crying:
Same here, the hardware is awesome. But software is a peace of crap. I am a Nexus User and I would love to have more or less stock Android. Then I would buy that phone.
Why aren't manufactuers releasing their kernels? I'm waiting frustratedly on kernels over at Oneplus 2 aswell. Need CM there so bad.

There are a lot of answers to this question and each and every brand has it's own.
It can vary from: We want people to have our Stock OS, to we like to violate the GPLv2, to we are horrible bad a writing code (nobody shall see that),.... and goes on forever.
In Xiaomis case I think it is much more simple: It's a Chinese company! (That says a lot, if you want more ask.)
It's a pity to see!

I have been using MI 3 for around 2 years now. And certainly don't see any necessity of changing the phone. But I doubt xiaomi will release the source code for MI 5. They didn't release it for mi pad despite of so many fan requests. Moreover, the bootloader is locked. What a way of ruining the beasty hardware.

I've come to understand you can unlock it quite simple. Yet custom roms on this device seems like a big nono.
Another question. How is the updates on miui global rom? weekly?

In terms of updates, xiaomi is quite fast. Global devs version is updated weekly. And marshmallow based MIUI 7 is a completely different android experience.

I do not get why Nexus users don't try MIUI before buying the phone! There are so many of em! And only a few try outMIUI before buying a phone that is limited to MIUI.

Xiaomi also gives long support, the Mi 5 will surely get Android N and whatever comes after. As long as you like MIUI, having a XIaomi is great!
It is no surprise the thread was closed so fast. Xiaomi is 'subsidizing' their mobile phone sales with the long-term outlook of being the new Chinese-Google, in the same way that console makers do not make enough profit off their consoles to allow for carefree business operation. Rather they sell software, services and additional hardware at a steep price.
Without the premise of providing services in a given country and a lucrative outlook, said country will not be supported as an official Xiaomi sales country.
However most likely the kernel-source topic is already collectively covered in an FAQ somewhere, - and reading and searching is part of the forum's etiquette - to which one agrees upon registering.
As ultimateSpace said, one can agree that MIUI is good. Xiaomi started out as a company by merely providing MIUI as a software product. However Android has radically improved since version 3.x.
However MIUI is such a radically different take in user design (UI)) and interaction (UX). Android is increasingly complex. Let's be honest. Who here hasn't youtubed some Android related instructions at some point or another.
Speaking for myself I really am not keen on learning two platforms, especially when undoubtedly ASOP + Google stack / Google Android outshines the competition.

If we get official CM we will see long term support aswell. They're giving out updates very generously.
Cm14 branch for oneplus 3 is up on github
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_device_oneplus_oneplus3/tree/cm-14.0
https://github.com/CyanogenMod/android_kernel_oneplus_msm8996/tree/cm-14.0
Here we go!
That was fast!
Sweeet. Hell even the 6P already has an asop based ROM now. Thing's are gonna get good with this version of Android.
Well that's good news alright it'll just take a while theres not even gapps yet.
I'd totally take an AOSP rom thought to tide over the wait.

Really? is surprising, 5 months ago we got a Developer Preview, they can start developing since that day, not now, it does not seem so strange people asking for that.

you got this wrong!! the source was released now. since that they can start the developing. the developer Preview was just to test nougat and for the developers to adjust their apps to the new android version.

This may sound like a very dumb question but isn't CM14 the same as Android 7/Nougat, because CM13 was Android 6?

LOL j/k welcome to android my friend and if you look back at the history off cm you will see the numbering system matches android numbering system in its own way. So yes CM14 is 7.0
I hope vulkan api will be included.
Well the branch is already up for 14 days. There are also no changes yet so we have to be patient, it still might take a few weeks until we see a nightly. I hope Android will one day be unified for all devices, so that we have a unified interface for all the hardware... This would make developing so much easier. Imagine we you just install a ROM like a OS to your computer and like 95% of the hardware is already ready to go.
Does anybody have any words/rumors about possible CM/AOSP development for the Mi Mix? I love my Mi Mix but I'm really not feeling MIUI at all. Would love to run a CM/AOSP rom on this phone instead. Though being exclusively available in China only really kills the development momentum from the get go. But a man can dream, can't he?

I agree. I want an AOSP ROM android 7.1.
You'll have to be patient and wait it out as the devices is new and overpriced if you want it now.
Sounds like CM is in the works:

Edit:
Looks like a typo by AndroidPolice, it's for the Mi MAX (hydrogen), not our phone (lithium).
It's still early, way too early to throw in the towel....

any updates guys?
Is there no way to contribute (monetarily) to help get AOSP?
no kernel sources released by xiaomi, no aosp. it looks like on my previous mi note pro (chinese only device), which took ages to get sources released.
We could get device tree from similar device and build from there but it's gonna be painful and probably we're looking at a half baked product that wouldn't be usable anyway.
In the meantime, we'll wait for the source to be release.
Should be able to pull the blobs from the phone or the build but without the kernel source I'm not sure how to get started. Has anyone seen the kernel source yet?
Xiaomi is usually too lazy to release Kernel sources for devices which don't sell all that much.
They usually release kernel sources for their flagship mass market devices, like the mi5 and also the mid range devices like the Redmi Note and Max as these are officially sold in a few asian markets outside of China.
The low end and the phones mainly intended for the Chinese market are usually left out. Also considering their phones dont support Google officially in the Chinese market, Android version upgrades aren't a priority for them. Majority of their consumers are content with the MIUI upgrages.

Maybe they learn, said this was a concept phone and aren't making many, plenty out there now, and what we're now making a white one, XDA calls the shots, think they don't check this site.
Well, atleast some super moderator in the MIUI forums have confirmed that the Mix is next in line to receive Nougat. So thats there. At the moment, I'm quite happy with the EU ROM. Its bloat-free and has great battery life. I would love to see CM(LineageOS) at one point though.
As much as I hate Apple devices for their closed eco-system, their UI is very polished. I know MIUI aims to look too much like iOS. Apart from the launcher, I dont have problems with MIUI.
And MIUI is one of the better skins on Android. I'll pick MIUI over most other manufacturer skins like Samsung's Touchwiz or LG's UI.

There's no way a device won't get custom ROMs sooner or later it's a developer's dream.
There definitely is a way. If they don't release the kernel source, that's it for anything but modified stock roms.

thats the only custom rom for the mix thus far and they claim that AOSP will be starting soon
In case ya'll didn't know, someone from EpicROM team on MIUI Official Forum mentioned that AOSP development for Mi MIx will start soon.

of course, there is a change in the next months, I mean come on seriously?
the other dev will likely be getting their hand of android o and miui just trying to get miui9 ext its ****ed up system going down there
but their products are amazing just if they release the sources of the devices and everything gonna be just fine
then we can get whatever we want
MIUI is already far ahead of stock Android IMO, just look at all features we have and stock Android doesn't have.... Except Multi window for now.
Not working wallpaper carousel and not a proper working push notifications
But the other useless things yeah they have something going with uselesles
Btw I don't screw with MIUI yeah they are good but I just need a good notifications that's all I sent need anything I'm a simple man
The works on nougat on mi 5 is still beta dev rom. I tried and fairly stable except a few minor error. At least until nougat for mi 5 is stable then we can see about mi mix
Probably MiMix will not receive N
http://en.miui.com/thread-562495-1-1.html
dun need android 7 for multi windows... samsung and LG already done it since android 4.. is see whether miui developer want to add or not
Do not hold your breath waiting for android 7 in MIX from xiaomi
Better try this rom
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mi-mix/development/unofficial-mi-mix-lithium-lineage-14-1-t3574745
$1000 Phone no update ?? good joke!
No need for android 7 for me, 6 it's working fine till exposed it's official of course.
Nougat isn't limited only for Multi Windows, there are a lot of new APIs (for example, Vulkan)
It will come, had it on the Mate 9 and Honor 8 ... its not that good over 6.0 ... just wait and it will arrive.
The only thing I really miss from my pixel, and Android 7 in general, is expandable notifications. Makes everything else seem ancient.

Which version of the stable international officiating ROM are you guys using? My phone came with the 8.2.19.0.0, and the latest one I see on Xiaomi page is 8.2.1, which I downloaded to "update", but the system tells me it's older than the installed one...
The thing is, the current one is the same that came with the phone when I bought, around Feb. 20, in Thailand. And the latest stable was released at some point in March. And I just can't find anything online about that .19 version, just one mention in some western European language, in one single post in one forum...
Any ideas?

True!! But we dont have a stable TWRP yet..
And I'm worried to install any Experimental builds as I screwed my last phone by doing so... I lost my IMEI for ever.
Meanwhile I've been trying to build an AOSP PIE rom from source using the kernel from ASUS website on GCP but it fails with an error every time.
Looks like there's lots more to learn.
great news hope the camera improves too.

It seems like there are very few developers who have Z5Z. Most of them would have rather gone for oneplus 6 or the poco F1. I am too coming from oneplus 2 and I am huge flash-o-holic. With 5Z, there is a bit of disappointment on that front. It is really good to know that there are few developers who are working on this device. All the best for your work.

So people prefer poco over 5z
