Download an OTA zip and sideload it through the recovery.

You don't have to root it. Wugs will update it to the most current (or any) stock image
Why are you not wanting to update to Nougat? Just curious. The only reason not to update to 7.1.1 is the problem with speakerphone calls.
I've understood for years that it's not a good idea to upgrade major versions, and but since the Google OTA jumped seamlessly from 6 to 7 the risk of problems is no doubt minimal (unless a technical member knows better...?)

Everyone here is going to suggest different roms. The best is if you test them all and find the one you feel is best for your need. Your best rom might not be the best for someone else and vice versa.

Does it matter what features, or is it only about quantity?
I'll throw out my suggestions just so you get a solid opinion. Key word opinion. I really like cyanide rom but it's not updated as much. If you want a rom with a crap load of mods and features, resurrection remix!

I noticed many people and custom roms are already on 5.0.2 yet the only stock rom released so far for 5.0.2 is Nexus 7. My question is can you flash Nexus 7 OTA to your Nexus 6?

Pretty sure Darwin has a theory about those people
He did and unfortunately not all of them are extinct
Rumors, facts, plans whatever discuss it here.
Do you think we could see a Android 5.1 update? I really would hope so for as slowly as they've been rolling it out, or what do you think the possibilities of (after LP Update is released) seeing a 5.1 rom is?
5.1 looks a lot better to me than 5.0.1/5.0.2 minor small improvements and what not.
This phone will never see lollipop as long as it exists
As long as this phone exists? Or as long as lollipop exists?

I thought they were gunna release an official lp (5.0.1) later this year for it.
I spoke with Samsung last night (chat) and they said it's coming but there is still no date.
Samsung Note 4 lollipop was released.

Negative ghost rider, towelroot doesn't work on anything passed 4.4.2. It doesn't even work on any flavor of 4.4.4, such as NL1. The only way to root from stock LP is to downgrade via Odin to a firmware supported by TR (4.4.2) and root from there, install safe strap, blah, blah, and flash a pre-rooted LP ROM, then reflash the LP kernel, modem, etc.

Odd it worked for my rom in my sig and it's 4.4.4 based, what about framaroot then I wonder?
Ohh well if what ya say is true we should be seeing the LP rom's coming soon in the next week.
Is there an external download source for the Lollipop ROM to install via ODIN yet? I'm on X Note and just want to wipe and flash through odin rather than flash to stock, downgrade and OTA etc....
The net always talks about how to Install Android 5 but I wonder whether it would be a good idea to install it in the first place.
Will I get better performance and a better phone? What about app compatibility? I just want a phone with the least bugs and problems.
Thanks

I'd say yes. Try it and see for yourself so you get your own opinion and not only base on what other people say. You can always go back.
I did the upgrade 2 weeks ago. It's worth it. The only compatibility issue i had was with Dungeon Hunter 5. It stopped working but it was probably a good idea to get rid of it anyway. (More slot machine than anything). Other than that, I'm loving it.

Yes, you just need to flash a Kitkat file from here; http://forum.xda-developers.com/z3-compact/general/list-stock-firmwares-d5803-d5833-t2906706
yes
least bug and problems, 4.4.4 is the winner.
I had 5.0 on other devices and it was a joy to come back to 4.4.4 and have a rock steady experience with insane battery life.
yes you can flash back, but like the UK version, I found no online files to do so. and I can make my own, but sod it. I know what 5.0 is and I wasnt impressed at all.
Updated yesterday, performance is the same if not better, battery is the same. You should try
I think I'll play it safe and give it some time to be sure before I update. I don't have the time or the knowledge to flash back to 4.4.4. Thanks everyone!

It's easy to flash back 4.4.4, however I updated yesterday and from my opinion it is not worth it at all, the interface is more complicated, there are bugs like a memory leak on startup which make it take age to load, xposed do not work well (I had a bootloop, had to reflash the system partition). I think I am going back to KK soon ?
I got an Android System update today, 26mb, and it tried to install it and failed...
Phone running stock, latest OTA, no root... But the bootloader is unlocked and it does have the no-force-encrypt kernel installed... Is that why it bombed?
Anyone else gotten it?

the only way you can install an ota is by being 100% completely stock. any changed files and every ota will fail.

I suspect you meant LMY48I (not LMY48L). If so, you are probably getting LMY48M now.
LMY48I was supposed to fix stagefright (among other bugs), but stagefright needed one more fix, which was included in LMY48M (among other bug fixes of course)

You could use the fastboot commands instead, and understand what's really happening behind the scenes (unless you already know that).

I received the update on my Nexus 9 yesterday and on my Nexus 6 and Nexus 5 today. all updates went smoothly.
So what is the latest and greatest version of the stock rom for the Verizon variant? This new M version?
How does it run with that kernel installed? Is everything faster and does games run with no issues now
Dont have a fire tablet, thinking of buying the 7 inch to play around just to put custom roms from xda

Yes, CM12 and other Android 5 roms, but latest firmware is not rooteable nor downgradable nor custom rom able

Several custom ROMs for this device are excellent (stable, feature complete) but as @fosco_ noted can only be installed on devices running older builds of FireOS (5.3.2 and below). A new device will likely arrive with 5.3.2.1 or higher which is not rootable or downgradable at present.

5.3.2.0 can be rooted which is one of two primary prerequisites for flashing a custom ROM (the other being SuperSU). Use the SuperTool to block OTA updates immediately after root is obtained.
