Installing Official MIUI using TWRP Discussion - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hey Guys, anyone already tried the link below on installing Official MIUI using TWRP?
How to Install Official Rom with TWRP Recovery!
I've been meaning to try Official MIUI for a long time now, and by doing so I ran obstacles along the way either using MIFlash tool or TWRP - nothing works. But I just saw the method I linked above, and could be the missing piece I need to install the rom thru TWRP.
The OP of that tried it with Redmi 3S. So I'm just wondering maybe someone here already made it worked with MI5?

I could update from global dev 6.11.10 to global dev 7.1.19 with miui built in updater . After downloading nougat it rebooted to twrp and installed the rom normally. The only thing is i lost twrp replaced by stock one .

Download latest MIUI and flash normal with twrp if update is fastboot method twrp replace to stock recovery

recommended is for you to wipe data, system, dalvik and cache to avoid possible force close window pop out when opening an app, however if you are going to one rom to another eg. aosp-miui global-dev or anything in particular i found out that wiping everything (avoid the efs partition of course) is the best choice for peace of mind, one final thought is only do this if you had other means to bring your phone back to life if other recovery method such as the ability to boot into edl mode is working for you and always do a full system backup of your current rom just in case, hope that helps

Currently, I am using MIUI EU rom and TWRP 3.0.2.0 . Ive tried several times of flashing official global MIUI and failed several times. So tried my luck with miflash tool months ago, but still unsuccessfull. And that's the reason I posted the method above, maybe it is the thing that I am missing.
But, it still continues to puzzle me why others , and even you, can successfully install official MIUI thru TWRP. weird.

can't find the line they talk about in that script. Did anyone managed to install miui trough TWRP on the Mi5?

Xiaomi Developer ROMs are delivered through flashable zips and through fastboot images, maybe look into the second option. Be aware that Xiaomi ROMs might replace the Recovery upon boot, if that isn't included in the fastboot image already, which I think is likely, and take a look into potential partitioning hazards.
Edit: To be extra helpful, here's the thread http://en.miui.com/thread-149081-1-1.html
I failed while flashing miui 7 stable on cwm r11, btw miui 6 worked for me everytime even on extended partition.
So I'd say no

which version of twrp are you using
Yes really, twrp is version 2.8.5.0 . To repartition i used cwm recovery, then i changed to twrp.
When i tried to flash miui v6 with twrp i failed, then i changed to cwm recovery, and then i flashed. Try like this if twrp makes failed flashing.

what about miui 7 did you flash it with cwm too
I also faced same issue, I found workaround for it from MIUI forums.
1) Go to recovery and wipe all (except internal storage)
2) Flash MIUI rom
3) You will get error, now just go to reboot and select recovery
4) flash rom again (without wiping) and it should work
Using latest TWRP

Yes twrp-2.8.7.0
I am on stock partition now. I think it should work with extended partition as it worked for me in the past when I tried MIUI 6. Its only the update which you will need to flash using recovery. Give it a try.
Yes i flashed with twrp recovery, it was working. First i flashed stable miui v7, then i reflashed with stable rooted version of miui v7 stable. so 2 times flashed v7 with twrp on extended partitions. I have mi4. but it should work as it is cancro

Can I install MIUI ROMs trough TWRP like any other ROM?

I just get the Mi5 and like I said in other se treads, im kind desapointed with the MIUI mostly because the touchscreen, performance and the notifications bar. I realy into adveture myself in the world of the custom ROMs, like CM 14.1, but my doubt is.. Can I only go back to complete Stock by flashing MIUI by Fastboot or can be installed trough TWRP like any other ROM?

official MIUI - use MI flashtool via fastboot method only
unofficial MIUI - flash via TWRP recovery or MI flashtool will also work
Sure you can. Actually I used twrp to update the stable version of miui for countless times. It is OK, at least for my 64G mi5
No. Official rom you must need miui flash tool.
you can flash Custom recovery form EDL mode even in bootloader locked
Hi. What would be the safest way to go back to global stable rom? I am on miui eu 6.11.10. Boot loader is unlocked, and my recovery is twrp 3.0.2.0. In recovery I get error message when I try to clear cache "can't mount cache". I just want to be able to receive ota, got tired of changing roms. Thanks

Yes; if you do a backup via TWRP of your miUI rommed device: sysimage + data + boot
advice: save it outside of the device (your computer, etc) for storage.
Then you can go frolicking with wathever rom you want, when tired put back in the device the backup files; reboot in recovery and via TWRP do a restore.
advice 2: as a baseline for a good/solid backup save also "efs" (that is the modem/sim stuff).
Why sysimage and not system?
Because that is an image (all the bytes) and the other is just the bytes in use; so sysimage will be a larger (in mb/gb) file but a more robust one (backup wise).
...
and for the two who inserted their personal questions in this semi-old thread...

Cant return to MIUI from LineageOS

Wipe everything
Install global developer zip file
When reboot, twrp says no OS installed

if the recovery method of flashing the full rom fails, then you have no other recourse except to flash via fastboot method.
take note of this "Please wipe all data in Recovery mode if you want to update to a discontinuous ROM version, or downgrade to an older ROM version using MIUI full ROM pack. If you upgrade from MIUI Stable ROM based on Android M to MIUI Developer ROM based on Android N, please flash it via Fastboot update. Recovery update might cause upgrade failure."

The reason is, that you can't flash OFFICIAL Chinese (Developer/Stadle) Rom with cusom recovery (TWRP). But you can flash anything esle. Like Lineage OS. If you want to use MIUI Rom, you have to flast a Xiaomi.eu ( developer or stable) rom. NOT OFFICIIAL CHINESE !!! If you prefer Official Chinese Global rom, you must download a FASTBOOT rom (not recovery) , and flash it in fastboot mode, with MiFlash.
instead of beating around the bush, why not follow the official procedure of flashing an official miui rom
if you are coming from a custom rom, as specified herein?:
http://en.miui.com/a-234.html
When can we expect official RR for mi max 2?
It was already available for redmi note 4 which is having the same processor.
You have to wait for custom Rom until miui release the kernel source which is must have to develop a custom one. please be patience...
If you flash rom with out error, Even no os installed warning, you can boot into system without problem.

Flashing chinese Mi9 issues and getting stuck in bootloop

Hi all,
So over the last day I have decided to install twrp and flash a new rom on my Chinese Mi9. Previously I have locked the bootdoader and installed the global rom. I have adb set up correctly and all relevant PC drivers.
So this is what I did and the problems I encountered. Hoping I can get some feedback as to what may have happened.
1 - Installed TWRP (mauronofrio) then it would get stuck on splash screen. Was told to install TWRP (LR.Team/wzsx150) which I did and it worked. I formatted and wiped my drive to get rid of encryption.
2 - I flashed EU rom (after editing script) using TWRP (wzsx150) then after install it would get stuck in bootloop.
3 - I installed TWRP (mauro) then installed EU rom and success, everything worked well. But I found with this EU rom, most of my apps would not install from play store or my Mi restore would not work, there were apps everywhere. Also EU rom was very buggy flashed it again and still the same issues so decided to go back to global rom. Too many apps would crash for no reason and even clearing cahce/data in app settings would not fix it.
4 - I flashed global rom on TWRP (mauro) and installed fine. But when restarted phone it got stuck in bootloop and couldn't get out of there. Had to use Miflash to flash the rom and start from scratch. I now lost TWRP and got Mi recovery back because of this.
5 - I flashed TWRP (mauro) again and tried global rom once again, flashed magisk etc and once installed rom, the thing got stuck in bootloop again.
6 - I now have flashed TWRP (wzsc150) and have installed global rom and it is installing and restoring fine. Once global rom has installed I have lost TWRP. I am also stuck in bootloop and can't get out.
So basically no TWRP works on my phone.
I have managed to flash phone back to original condition with the global rom. On a positive it still works and the storage is unencrypted.
Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions why my Chinese Mi9 doesn't like TWRP (mauro) and it always gets stuck in bootloop. I just want root access on my phone and google pay to work with unlocked bootloader.
Thank you
This seems to be the theme with 8GB version? I have this version too and makes me worried. I still have about 5 days till unlock insha Allah
These TWRP for Mi 9 are quite beta (no working decryption, no proper backup and restore for example).
If you want to have it, you must use custom rom like EU one.
Stock rom auto re-flashs Mi recovery, period.
BTW, I don't find any unbearable bug the EU rom (most of guys here also have no problem with it), just reinstall the app, backup program such as Titanium backup may introduce a lot of errors...
Sent from my MI 9 using Tapatalk
The apps were fresh installation from Google restore. Even when I deleted them and installed again they still crashed. Gmail, Waze and even checking software version in settings all made it crashed.
So now if I were to install twrp and euro rom again, it shouldn't delete my user data as I no longer need to unencrypt my storage right? Will euro rom just overwrite global rom and keep all my data

Do you think when I installed this rom I never did a wipe and all my apps were there on start up. Do you think this might be a cause of certain apps crashing?

All the time working my old Magisk + Xposed (Ed) modules working without reinstalling them. Little out of topic here but just wanted to say

So with a custom rom like EU rom, everytime there is an update do you have to flash back twrp etc? Do the updates work OTA?

I was talking about official Global Developer rom. To answer your questions. With EU you always need reflash Magisk for sure, if also twrp I don't remember. Yes EU have OTA updates but only full packages and need be flashed over twrp so all bloadware is back.

Thank you for all your help with this Ted. It has helped a lot.
So I did the OTA update this morning successfully, but noticed before doing the flash in TWRP, there was a message saying it had to do it that way due to my device been encrypted. That's funny because I have formatted then wiped the drive before installing the rom. Is this a true message?
Always do a full wipe when flashing to a different variant of miui since current twrp has issues on decryption. I also had tons of problems from just resetting only without wiping data. For example flashing to eu from china stable everything worked from just doing factory reset. But google play cannot download any app that has an obb attached for some reason. Most likely problems with file encryption so i did a full wipe now everything works properly.
I'm not able to make TWRP work, its successfully install on terminal and when I reboot and hot volume Up key it bringing me to FASTBOOT mode, and if I do restart system, it and then hold Volume Up key, its again the stock Recovery.
My device is Chinese 8GiB 128GiB. any help will be appreciated. I want to install Xiaomi.eu rom as my current stock Chinese rom with google app giving me horrible battery life, standby battery drain is too bad.

You need to do it quickly.
After successfully installed TWRP in fastboot, hold power button to power off (it will restart instead of completely off), when the screen gone black, very quickly hold the volume up button, hold it until you see the twrp screen.
If you are not quick enough, the phone will boot up and stock recovery will be automatically intstall back, you have to start over: install twrp again.

flashing custom rom ( pixel experience plus edition) Keep Booting Into TWRP Recovery

I was using pixel experience ROM for some time and I tried to update to the latest plus edition. The installation guide recommended full format data and flashing. I did as instructed. Now I'm stuck in booting into TWRP recovery. I looked up a few kinds of stuff and none of them worked. Is anyone else facing the same problem? has anyone got a working fix? I tried removing the TWRP folder, re-flashing TWRP with TWRP and orange fox recover, and then flashing ROM. non helped. got a broken phone now any help is appreciated.

Wipe everything, system, vendor, internal storage, dalvik, cache via advanced wipe, then flash firmware and vendor or if your rom has included firmware then just flash the rom directly. Try to boot into OS if it still bring back to twrp then again repeat the above steps and this time flash stock vendor and firmware from mi website and try to boot into OS.

I"m looking into https://miuirom.org/phones/xiaomi-12, but they seem to be recovery and not firmware. I'm not sure if recovery comes with firmware. As I need to format to install, will the firmware stay or not?

Why bothering to manually search here and there for official ROMs
Install the app:
MIUI Downloader - Apps on Google Play
MIUI upgrade app for Mi users.
play.google.com
and the app will show you links to download the latest Global, EEA, etc, zip/recovery or tgz/fastboot, or you can scroll through the older versions and pick an older if you wish
Btw, latest are MIUI 12.5, A11 - there are no official A12 ROMs for Mi 9/Redmi K20 line of models
Even if they receive MIUI 13, it will be (for some already released, but eg China only, etc) it will be A11
Same issue, I guess this is it for me. Time to buy a new phone rather than accidentally losing data from time to time with custom ROMs. I wonder if they didn't know such issue exists before releasing it to the public.
