Bypass the hotspot check to enable hotspot - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Everytime i want to use the hotspot tethering the phone checks with carrier to see if i have hotspot in my plan. I do but it is kinda annoying and slows the phone. My concern is what if i want to use another carrier or something like that and it does not work well. I just want the phone to do what it suppose to do instead of jumping over barriers. Is there any mod/patch to disable or remove it? Im on 910t2 4.4.4 kk stock.

The only way that works for me is by using Xposed with a module called motoxtether. It allows the use of native hotspot tethering.

[Q] App to automatically turn on tethering?

I don't suppose anyone knows of an app that can automatically turn on tethering when specified wifi access points are not available?
Like many others I dont want a data plan on my xoom so I tether using my phone when I am not near an access point. I get damned good battery life on my nexus one, but I still don't want to leave tethering on all the time. I would be nice if I could have it automatically turn on tethering when my known wifi APs are not available.
You could probably use Tasker to do this - You'd have to configure it yourself, but it would work.

Don't know of an automated way but Hotspot Toggle in the market is a good widget you can place on your home screen. One touch on and off.
I was thinking that I could combine your answers to get a solution, but hotspot doesn't show up as an app in tasker.

Without rooting your phone and having an app require root, you won't find this capability. In one of the recent major android builds google removed the ability for applications to turn on and off wifi automatically.

Best Wifi Tether WITH root option?

So I've been a longtime foxfi -> PDANet user and ever since 4.3 dropped I've lived without tether. It wasn't THAT big a deal for me since I tether in emergency situations only and they don't come up often but now that I'm on the S5 and root has dropped I realized it's time to get tethering as a backup working.
So my question is what's the current best wifi tether option for the S5 if you've rooted it? I don't mind paying for an app if there's no free version that does the same thing or just to support a good developer. I've found things like wifi tether:
https://code.google.com/p/android-wifi-tether/
but every one I've found seems old and hasn't been updated in quite a long time.
Any feedback much appreciated.
Try WiFi Tether Router v6
I apologize for being nosey, but what's wrong with the built-in Mobile Hotspot?

Grandfathered unlimited with no option to use the built-in Mobile Hotspot without giving up the unlimited. I use MAYBE 500MB-1GB tethering a month and I'm not willing to give up unlimited for the ability to tether those rares times especially since pulling into the parking lot of a starbucks has worked for those emergencies in the last few months.

This looks promising but I don't like paid apps you can't try before buying. Does anyone else have any experience with this app?

That WiFi tether is OK to use. The core system has not been updated in a while, but if you look into the project a little deeper, you will find that the S4 just received it's own configuration into the tether.
With the S5 recently obtaining root, I'm sure the configuration will be patched in soon.
I am using 3.4pre1 (experimental). There are only two issues I came across.
1) The Logging portion fails.
2) If you are connected to a wifi hotspot, then start wifi tether, you will loose the configuration for that specific SSID. Don't worry, though, as a reboot will fix this.
Also, I use the S4 device profile. It seems there is somewhat smoother operations with this.
I have grandfathered unlimited data with AT&T and successfully enabled the built-in hotspot by using the "Disable tethering provisioning" option in WanamXposed

I just tried that and it didn't seem to work for me. I got impatient and just bought Wifi Tether Router 6 (that $25 google play credit makes it hard to be patient). It seems to work but I had some issues when I was connected to Wifi when I started to initiate the tether and actually if I was even in a place where I had a signal for a saved wifi. Forgetting the wifi networks in my house and it worked which I guess is ok since I wouldn't ever be using it someplace where I had another Wifi to connect to.
But I wouldn't mind figuring out how to use wanam xposed to do it, if there's a way to.

Question: What to you do to make it work? I tried this and it still fails. I go to turn it on and a dialog pops up, says "Checking" and then turns off.

Sorry, please disregard my last post. While I had one initial session working and could access the portable hotspot on my Mac, it seems to no longer work.

I can 100% confirm however that the Xposed module "X Tether" enables native tethering correctly...I am posting using it now
Ha ha! You beat me to it! Yes native tethering works indeed. Head to

Yes it does seem to. Allows me to use native app, doesn't mess up wifi if connected already. I think I'll use this method. I'll just eat the $2.50 for wifi tether router I guess.
Thanks Scott.

[Q] wifi tethering without provisioning check?

Now that we have root back, I tried using Wifi Tether but it wont start correctly. all the other apps out there keep triggering the AT&T checker which then kicks it back off. Miss the old days when the tether widget trick worked. Anyway, does anyone know what settings to change to make WiFi tether work? Or if there is a particular version we need for our phones?
Aww, meant to post this in the questions forum. Can an admin move it please?

Have you tried freezing the system app called "tetheringprovision"?
Yep. Froze it using Titanium and now it gets a "Unfortunately, Settings has stopped" when I try turning tethering on.
Tried FoxFi as well. It was able to start without any errors but it's not broadcasting anything.
Nevermind. Got it to work using another app. Luckly I only need it once in a while so the pain to turn it on and off doesnt bother me.
Do wish AT&T didnt make such a fuss about tethering with the unlimited plan (yay grandfathered plan!)

Does native Wifi Hotspot work with T-Mobile or AT&T?

I have the Verizon Droid Turbo (XT1254) on 6.0.1, and I am using it with a T-Mobile SIM card. Calls and texts seem to be working just fine, and the native wifi Hotspot feature seems to "work" in the sense that you can turn it on/off, set up your password and other settings, and have different devices connect to the XT1254 via the Wifi Hotspot feature. HOWEVER, the wifi connected devices do NOT actually get any data/internet connection from my Droid Turbo.
Is this how it is supposed to be? Or do I need to set it up differently or otherwise is there something wrong with my device?

Have you tried using a different tethering app like FoxFi? Also, just to eliminate the stupid things, are you positive that your plan includes tethering?

What @TheSt33v said. Your carrier plan needs to include Wi-Fi hotspot privileges if you use unrooted stock ROM. If you use a custom ROM, it can bypass those pesky carrier restrictions. Also, with root on stock ROM, there may be apps or xposed modules that can do the same thing.
If you are sure your plan includes Wi-Fi hotspot feature and you are using stock unrooted ROM, and you are still not getting it to work right, then I don't know why. But you can easily fix it by going root and/or custom ROM route.

Hotspot question...

I'm curious. I don't have hotspot provisioning on my plan.
I know using a custom rom I can still use hotspot without the nag popup and blocking the hotspot.
Can I use a rooted stock rom as apposed to a custom rom, and still use hotspot without the nag popup and block hotspot like with a custom rom?
Could be wrong but you would probably need a third party tool like WiFi Tether Router or the like to mask/hide tethering.
BTW, just being on a custom ROM doesn't mean one can use hotspot without the nag. One of my phones, running CyanogenMod, acts as my hotspot. I have a tethering plan but I thought CM would do the right thing and mask it. At some point I got a pop-up/notice telling me I reached 80% of my allotted data. Was using the aforementioned app, too. Maybe misconfigured.
Carriers (T-Mobile in my case) are getting smarter at detecting things though.
