Hello guys,
For most of us, we use a tweaked version of waze that shows speed cameras and police controls. We use it through installing the modified APK, and you're set. But I recently understood that android auto only uses apps that are installed through Google play store... So basically we're so doomed!
Anyone know a way around this?
Thanks
I would like to know also. I'm planning on upgrading my head unit, but won't until I know there is a way to get Waze and convert standard android apks to android auto apks.
I had found a way to install the apps through adb so that the phone believes it was installed through the Play Store. It works great even with modified apks and I have them working with Android Auto. I'm at work right now but I have the commands saved at home. I'll edit this post when I get home with those commands.
I would like to know how to do this, as well.
Where is this cool apk?
My bad, slipped my mind. Here are the adb commands
adb push APP.apk /sdcard/APP.apk
adb shell pm install -i "com.android.vending" -r /sdcard/APP.apk
adb shell rm /sdcard/APP.apk

Rename APP.apk into whatever your APK is called and run those commands. Pretty simple imo
Tried that couldn't get it to work
Hi there,
Why did you using twiked version of Waze? i'm using the version from Google Play and Waze shows me Police traps and Speed cameras without tweaks (someone must report for the trap or for the camera).
I'm using joying vl130 Head unit, and waze is installed normally. Unfortunately my head unit is with only 1GB Ram, and is not running smooth .
Before the Joying i had Ownice with 2GB Ram, and Waze worked Ok alse, but unfortunately the device was broken, and ... never again Ownice!
Can you please share URL with info about this tweaked version?

Does waze woks trough android auto?
Please someone report because I'm not sure i have understood well..
If we are rooted should we do the trick with adb? By installing other apps not from playstore eg patched Spotify versions, i can install and see them through Android auto if i select developer option insight android auto, why shoud i use adb to do this for waze?
Any link for this patched waze version?
Thanks,
Waze currently won't work with Android Auto. It's not designed to yet.

The beta is not released. You must wait.
For the people following this matter, in a country wher police and speed cameras are banned from waze, you can still install your modded waze app through adb, whitout root, and set it up as vendor (same status as installed from play store), tried it with spotify and it worked, now we wait the compatibility of waze with android auto, it's said that the first compatible beta will launch this week

If you search in Google, they are waiting for waze beta 1 year ago.. It was then supposed to launch in a week. A year later this is still the case.. It doesn't sound good..

I'm actually following this since they announced the future compatibility back in may 2016, but now they invited people to be beta testers, me included... So at least it's moving forward, and if the beta is stable enough, we can use it ...

ive been on the beta testers list for ages, one is for testing waze in general there is often progress on that, but on the beta testers android auto and waze group its nothing but people slagging each other off, no word from the developers for months and months.
Not sure if it will come in 2017 at all

The topic of offline navigation has been discussed before. However with the Nexus 7 and JB, what offline app provides the quickest, accurate, and full featured navigation?

I'm trying to decide which one to spend my money on only ONCE. I know google maps has offline cache, but there's still no searching for POI and naviagation.
I like Sygic. Navfree i could never get it to search without having some form of data. Navigon is supposed to be good too.
Navigon works great for me

The built in navigation works great! I used it a couple times this weekend to test it out.
Sygic
I use Sygic myself! I love it! It's great because when you purchase a map pack like North America for example you can download by state so you can save space and download only the places you need! Plus you can import POIs from various websites which is nice! Also the voice nav doesn't sound robotic, I have mine set to British English and it sounds like a real person!

Unless you can't start navigation where you have a data signal. Then you have a map and your location on it, no navigation.
I've been using Copilot for a number of years now and I love it. Looks and runs beautiful on the N7...

If you have loaded a map for navigation it works fine unless you want to go a different direction than what is programmed in nav. It doesn't reroute until you have a data connection with your phone or mifi or something.

Waiting for NavNgo Primo to became available for Android (they have a version for IPhone). On PNDs (Win CE) is the BEST navigation sofware, periodTheir current version called "Primo" sold only to OEMs to be installed on PNDs is years ahead of Google Navigation. In fact Google should be smart and buy them and replace their navigation software with that one. They will save years of development on their own navigation software and will transform Android over night into the best automotive OS. Most PNDs exept the big brands as TomTom and Garmin is using this software. Hopefully it's going to be an Android version soon. The software is great but it require a customized UI for every resolution (maps are self adjusting, but the rest of UI uses bitmaps). But the software is modable, so it might not be a problem.Next in line I would try Navigon (now Garmin). Not sure how is the Android software did not play with it, their PNDs hovever were not bad, but still less fluid that IGo.I also read that some Android nav software is not on par with the older WinCE versions buy any reason, even the paid versions.

I can't get 4.13 to start right. 4.11 did the same thing. black screen first couple of times then it was fine.
Might load 4.11 back for now until they update
I have CoPilot Live for North America and its great on the Nexus. Fast satellite link, lots of POIs, works great for car GPS alternative and local travel on foot or as a passenger. I've moved it from device to device and with frequent map updates, it's a keeper. On the down side, full NA maps = 1.2 G, so glad I have a 16G unit.
Do any of these options include free turn-by-turn voice navigation?
Hi all. Firstly I'm a big evernote user, I've had it on my devices for years and almost every note I make goes through evernote in some way at some stage.
One of my main reasons for getting a nook was to root and use for reading Google reader feeds and making and accessing all my notes (effectively my digital notepad). I've carried my nook with me everywhere in this capacity for months however the most recent evernote update means the app won't even launch, firstly is anyone else had this issue secondly suggestions to fix it?
So far I've re installed evernote several times tried reboots etc but no change. The app just doesn't load.

Anyone else?
"Doesn't install" doesn't tell us a lot.
A logcat over ADB would tell us why the package manager doesn't like it.
I would guess that they increased the minimum SDK version required to run it.
Use apktool d on the apk.
Look at AndroidManifest.xml
Look for this:
Code:
<uses-sdk android:minSdkVersion="7" />
It probably says 9 or something.
Or you could read the documentation for the application and see what they require.
It installs fine but when I try to launch it the app just doesn't open. Is it working on everyone else's nst?

cant login with this version.
Update: login works again.
Sideload an older version - 4.5.6.2
I found this answer on another thread. Works perfectly.
Simply install version 4.5.6.2 from the Android Drawer Repository
I just use an old version of Evernote (2.6.2) which is much lighter than the new ones and seems to work perfectly fine on the Nook Touch.
Is there a version with multitouch support? I wish i could zoom in and enlarge the tiny font.
So I have a DVD headunit which I purchased last year it has better specs than those of Windows CEs but still was wondering what is the minimum required hardware to run Android Auto or to port it?

Anything is possible.
It's just "very, very difficult" without Google's source code.
Without the Google code (which I doubt will be released), or code from a non-trivial reverse engineering project, I think it would become merely "very difficult", especially for Chinese devices with no documentation.

Automate is an app that looks somewhat, sort of similar to AA, but it's not AA, and it won't be able to take advantage of all the AA enhancements Google will be putting out over the next several years.
I've written an Android Auto Headunit app that can turn a tablet or phone into a basic AA compatible headunit. It works with the standard Google AA app and will continue to support it as it, and my app, get new features.
Tablets on a dashboard have some disadvantages compared to "real" head units.
So I'm now looking at the most popular Chinese headunits, and I'd like to try to get my app to run on the more popular ones at least. If it looks more or less like a standard Android device, which is pretty likely, it should work...
I'm about to post release #2 of my app on my thread in this section if anyone wants to try.

It's currently configured to require 4.0 minimum, but there is some small chance it could even run on 2.3, if a good H264 decoder is present.
Ever since Android Auto was announced at Google I/O last year, I really wanted to have it in my car. Unfortunately, I am not in the market for a new car, or even a $800 car stereo that supports Android Auto.
With that in mind, I set out to make an app called AutoMate that gives a similar experience to Android Auto. After five months of work, I am close to releasing a beta version. I am very excited to share some early screen shots with you guys today.
Would you see yourself using something like this? I'd love to hear some thoughts and opinions! I can't give an exact release date just yet, but I am hoping for the end of March.
I also created a g+ community that I will be using when the app is ready for beta testing. Please feel free to join to get updates about development.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Tnx broo

Great work man ! it looks very promising, I surely would like to install it on my galaxy Note 1 running CM12 !
if the app can be triggered by connecting a Bluetooth device or a car-mount (Driving mode) that would be perfect !
keep up the good work, best luck
Correct me if wrong, but AutoMate is (or will be) a "regular" app, right ?
It is not Android Auto, or a direct alternative to AA. IE if I build an app with Android Auto features, it will not automatically have those features used in the same way as AA.
I mean no offense, and I am not attempting to criticize what this app is doing, but I think it needs to be made clear that this is not AA, nor is/will it be compatible with AA.
For these reasons, perhaps a post here in the AA section might be misplaced.
If it does what it does well, and people like it, that's great, and I look forward to seeing an APK posted.
Can't wait to try this out in my car install. Would be more than happy to test it for you if needed. Keep up the good work!!

Correct, it's a regular app. Sorry if I was not clear. It's not affiliated with AA or compatible with AA in any way. The reason I posted it here was because some users expressed frustrations with not being able to run the AA UI on their phones, and this app provides an alternative.

I have been using the beta with my in-dash Nexus 7 for a few days and I like it, I like it a lot, it is well designed and easy to navigation however it is a real shame (due to Android / Google play service limitations) that turn by turn directions will leave the app.
I suppose paying for the premium features and having it as the home screen is a good workaround.
Check out the OP's Google+ page. There's a link to download the APK to test it out.
So would this app replace the launcher on my android head unit in my car or is it meant for the phone side of it?
I am thinking of releasing an app that can mirror any android devices (starting from Android 2.3 up to android 5.1) to Chromecast receiver.
Since google's Chromecast app can support quite a lot devices, I am not sure if there are still enough interests to mirror android devices with old versions?or to mirror new android devices that Chromecast app do not support?
I did develop such an app, but never released it to public, it's working quite well actually.
Please let me know if you are interested in it, and I can post free versions here.
Please , go ahead. and Let us have a look at it .

Have a rooted Nook HD+( on CM12.1 - lollipop 5.1 ) and chromecast 2015(new version). Regular casting works fine, but there is something preventing mirroring . When hitting casting selection the screen abruptly disconnects. I've tried a program called Mirrorenabler and it also will not mirror. A report by someone using CM11 and some custom rom reported mirroring working fine on Nook HD+ so its not a hardware issue. Does anyone have any thoughts ??
Thanks,
Al
In order for Chromecast app mirror to work, google play services must be installed into system partition. Your android most likely does not have it.
Our Chromecast sender app does not use Google play services, so it should work, please visit this thread later for the apk.
Hey,
I can also confirm that unfortunately on Nook HD+ on CM12.1 mirrorenabler doesn't work, nevertheless on cm11 latest built mirror enabler works great. But still both CM11 and CM12.1 for me are unstable, actually cm12.1 is worst for me getting a lot of download and apps installation slow down, on cm11 I get a lot of keyboard droppings when typing in the browser but gennerally the experience is a lot better.
So would love to test on stock (4.0.4) your app apparently with root.
Thanks

My CM12.1 on Nook HD+ is not as good as 5.01 that I previously had. If you get Trickster Mod ( to increase responsivness ) and increase read ahead buffer 768 and get Glove Xperia ( to adjust screen sensitivity if needed ) you might like CM12.1 better
