[Q] Update N910T with stock firmware w/o updating bootloader? - T-Mobile Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an SM-N910T running N910TUVU1COG2. I've kept it at this because I didn't what to lose the unlocked bootloader.
Is it possible to update my N910T with stock firmware without updating the bootloader? I've done it on other Android phones without any problems, but am clueless about the Note 4's ability to do so. What say you all?

No you cannot run 5.1 or 6.0 firmware/rom with 5.0 bootloader.

Well, that totally sucks. Damn Samsung/T-Mobile. One of the main reasons I bought the phone was because it had an unlocked bootloader so that I could do as I will with it. It was bought out-right, unsubsidized, and I should be able to install what I want without worrying about the bootloader getting locked. So I guess I'm stuck at COG2 for a while longer, at least until my desire to keep the bootloader unlocked is overcome by my desire for new hotness.

If once you upgraded to marshmallow you can only downgrade to 5.1.1 OK1 but no 5.0 or 4.4.4.
But with 5.1.1 OK1 bootloader you can still flash 4.4.4 and 5.0 roms with custom kernels and they work flawless.

Only revert lock. But if you are looking at rooting, recovery and flashing roms its not locked. I took mine to PE3 MM and left it there.....

OK, I'm confused.
Sorry to belabor the point, but I'm confused. If the bootloader is unlocked, then should I not be able to flash any ROM, Samsung's or not? i.e. I don't understand how the OK1 bootloader, if it's unlocked, will prevent me from flashing COD2. Or is it that the bootloader itself will not properly boot anything prior to OK1?

[Q] has there been any progress on unlocking the bootloader?

So I just got my note 3 n900A att model about 2 months ago. last month the lollipop update pushed to my phone and I was happy but then I started working on rooting. I successfully downgraded my phone to 4.4.4 then to 4.4.2 by following guids on here and on another webiste that instructed me to use odin and then I rooted. Right now I am on Biggons rom and it is beautiful. I have been using safestrap to flash custom roms for this n900A.
I am however interested in trying to obtain a custom kernal and the bootloader being locked is frustrating. To my peasant understanding there isnt a option as of yet to get around the bootloader. please correct me here if I am wrong.
Are any developers working on this? Is it even possible to work on this? Am I just completed F'ed unless I went out and got a different variant of this phone with an unlocked bootloader?
lastly! Im curious if it is possible to turn my phone into a developer edition? that might be just a repeat version of my previous question. excuse my ignorance. I am new to this phone and boot locks n the what not.

No, you can't. If you are on 5.1 with a locked bootloader, kingroot, mofo, nor sunshine work. There is no way for you to root, flash custom roms, nor unlock your bootloader.
Mofo, kingroot, and sunshine only work for 4.4.4 or 5.0.
You are currently stuck, sorry.

But I will back to 5.0 firmware. I will use fastboot mode. Only flash ---> system.img_sparsechunk1 , 2 , 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.
False?

False, with the bootloader locked, it does not allow you to downgrade to 5.0 nor 4.4.4. The only thing it let's you do is flash the same 5.1 image, it prevents going back to old versions unless you have an unlocked bootloader.
So no unlocked bootloader = no downgrade, no root, no mofo, no sunshine. There is no way to do it currently.
Same problem with you, I've tried but cannot downgrade, cannot root, cannot use sunshine to unlock.
So im waiting for the first thing's first-----a way to root 5.1 on XT1096.

Idk, i've been using mofo with my xt1096 even after i updated to 5.1 although i was originally on 5.0 when i first started using it. i thought it was possible. first, just check with mofoverify to see if mofo will work. if it does, then buy mofo and flash the rooted 5.1 mofo image and then use sunshine.
Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk
The problem is that they have the 5.1 bootloader which prevents mofo from working. You are using 5.1 system and kernel on a 5.0 bootloader which is why mofo works for you. They can't downgrade the bootloader... Which means no mofo.

oh ok, thanks for clearing it up.
Sent from my XT1096 using Tapatalk
I think someone should report if they have actually tried downgrading to 5.0 from 5.1 ota and keeping the 60.16 bootloader. Can someone more knowledgeable chime in and stop me before I try this? It seems like the most that would happen is a bootloop, which can be fixed by flashing the 5.1 ota files via Motorola device manager.. Just do not flash motoboot.bin or gpt.bin just edit the batch file and remove those two lines. Someone try and see if we can indeed use that as a path to bl unlock.
It won't bootloop. It just straight up will fail to flash saying that you can't downgrade. You can only downgrade after you have an unlocked bootloader.

No. The pure edition does not use nor support CDMA. It won't be able to work at all with verizon's network.

I'm using it in europe...I don't need cdma here so I don't care if it loses that functionality.

G920T root/custom goodies on the G920T1

Hey guys,
So I just bought bought a G920T1 and I am aware that it is the same hardware as the G920T with a few software differences (missing download booster). Knowing this, is it safe for me to use the root methods/custom recoveries/custom firmwares of the G920T on my phone?
Thanks
Yes. And by custom firmwares I assume you mean custom roms
Sent from my SM-G920T using Tapatalk
Yup, they are exactly the same phone. So use Unikernel to root, TWRP for recovery, and firmware of choosing.
One thing tho is if you wanna use the unlocking method with Metro which use codes. Then don't flash any TMO modem and bootloader as you will lose the unlock. Just update them to lastest 5.1.1 from sammobile or OTA if you need to. Other then that you should be good to go.

I bought the phone off swappa and it was listed under the T-mobile S6 section, but I noticed that the model number in the pictures was G920T1. I'll probably ask the seller how he unlocked his phone. So flashing a custom ROM should be fine, right? Based on my previous experience flashing my older S3, flashing modems were usually a different .zip than the ROMs and I don't really remember all too much about bootloaders.

Yeah flashing custom rom is fine as they don't include the modem nor bootloader. It's just that most newer roms require you to have the lastest bootloader and modem for best experience. Sorry didn't mean to confuse you more, but G920T and G20T1 are the same phone. Some people just swap firmwares between TMO and Metro as the G920T1 is easier to unlock. I have the same version G920T1 and bought code off of ebay to unlock easily.

Hello again, about to get my S6 soon and was wondering if you could point me to some root methods that would work without breaking fingerprint scanner or tripping KNOX. It's been awhile since I've been back in the rooting scene and was hoping you could point me in the right direction. Also, if I want to keep my unlock and upgrade to Tmo 5.1.1 stock, I would flash the Tmo ROM with a Metro bootloader?

Yes it will lock bootloader only if you have verizon or AT&T N910V/N910A.
On Other models the bootloader will lock just to downgrade to 5.0/4.4.4 if you flash 6.0.1 bootloader.
You won't be able to downgrade.

I mean once you upgrade to mashamallow bootloader you cannot downgrade to 5.0 or 4.4.4 because bootloader will lock just to prevent downgrading otherwise no issues with root/roms/recovery.
You can still downgrade to 5.1.1 though.
On at&t and verizon bootloaders are locked for downgrading and flashing recovery/rooting etc.

You can downgrade to 5.1.1 by odin then you can unlock bootloader .
on marshmallow is not possible so far.
You can watch video in link below step by step tutorial by zedomax
It's still pain in the butt though to unlock but if you got patiance then you can do it.

Link below there is a guide first you have do downgrade to 5.1.1 then upgrade to marshmallow without relock the bootloader.
Once you do that then you can flash any marshmallow rom.
Good luck.

Bootloader
I recently talked to at&t about getting my bootloader unlocked and a supervisor told me the only way to do so without bricking would be to being it in to an at&t store and they will unlock the bootloader.. anybody else have this told to them?
They're most likely taking about a Sim unlock not bootloader. Also there is a method for rooting it but you have to be on a specific bootloader and you can only use it on lolipop.

Ya, I know about that root method. Unfortunately, my phone decided to update itself a few weeks ago and now its on BL 5. So that's pretty much a no go.
In relation to bringing in the store for a BL unlock, I did specifically ask and made sure the tech I was speaking with knew the difference between BL and sim unlock. In fact, i made it very known that my radio was already unlocked, I done that weeks before i talked to her.
