Hi,
So recently, I have been using a package disabler called ultimate tool for samsung. Everything worked fine, as I was able to disable the gear vr service and run cardboard apps on gear vr. Today, I wanted to use my gear vr again, since I hadn't used it in a long time. So I put my S6 in my gear vr, and noticed the gear vr menu didn't launch. So I of course thought the package was disabled, which I found out it was. However, I was unable to enable it. So I tried package disabler pro, but I couldn't enable it on there either. I decided to uninstall all gear vr/oculus apps and put the phone back in the gear vr, but still no result. Would like to get some help.
Thanks in advance.
Using the disabler apps for Cardboard mucked up my phone too. The only way to get things working again I found was a factory reset. I just got a cheap VR Box viewer for Cardboard.

Try enabling it through the native application manager in settings.
Then wipe the data for all of the apps related to gearvr.
Than lastly, make sure facebook app manager and Facebook app installer are enable too. They are both required for gear vr

Problem is, the Gear VR Service isn't listed on the app manager, since its more of a service/package than an app.

Pardon, i shouldve clarified that when in application manager, you need to press "more>show system apps"

Alright, Facebook app manager and Facebook app Installer are enabled. Gear VR SetupWizardStub and Gear VR Shell were already enabled and also cant be disabled. When I put my phone into the Gear VR, the Gear VR menu still doesn't open.

Okay so I'm thinking when you uninstalled the gear vr apps, 1 of 2 things probably happened.
Either you accidentally got rid of one of the important gear vr apps like gearvr installer, or the gearvr apps think you already installed everything gearvr related so they aren't trying to re-install.
And just to clarify, when you put your phone into the gearvr, NOTHING whatsoever happens right? There's no downloading symbol in the status bar, the blue or gray intallation window doesnt open up? The screen doesn't get glitchy or start flashing?
IMPORTANT: Make you restart your phone in between EACH attempt to get gearvr working. You need to reset the active processes and make sure any changes go into effect.
Heres what you should try, my mind will be blown if it doesnt work (if it doesnt, i could link you the gear vr apks so you can reinstall them from scratch manually... but that's last resort method)
1. Settings>applications>application manager>more>show system apps
2. Go through the entire list and open any thing that says Gear, Gear Vr, Oculus, Facebook, App manager, or app installer in the name and ensure that its enabled. When you open each of those apps after you confirm theyre enabled, tap "storage" and clear data. You might not be able to wipe data on all of them, try to clear cache.
3. This might not be a factor, but wouldn't hurt... go into settings>battery>battery usage>more>optimize battery usage... the drop down menu near the top will say apps not optimized, tap that and select "all apps" then go through the lengthy list and find all of those apps from step 2, and move the switch to "off" so they are NOT optimized to save power.
3.1 after you do that, restart your phone.
3.2 If your model has Smart Manger, it wouldn't hurt to go in there and make sure nothing gearvr ir oculus related is set to save power (not all models have smart manager, for example verizon doesnt have it)
4. Plug your phone into the gear vr. At this point, SOMETHING should happen. If the screen opens and that voice tells you "remove your device from Gear Vr to install required applications" thats a good sign, even if the install fails!
If still NOTHING at all happens, then most likely whatever hapened to screw up the gearvr apps can't really be undone without a factory reset, or manually installing the packages (which can be kinda glitchy)
It's also possible that something happened to the port on the gearvr to damage it. But we can cross that bridge if none of the above works.

I trief all this, and it still doesn't work. I think the problem is that the package Gear VR service is disabled. This is the process that makes sure the oculus apps launch when putting it in a gear vr. I think its a service thats already present when you buy the phone, even if you dont have the gear vr. This is the package I disabled in order to use Cardboard apps, and i cant enable the package anymore, so I doubt a reinstall from an apk will fix this. As you can see in the screenshot I added as attachment, the gear Vr service is disabled
Android 7 is coming to my S6 soon. Would it be a good idea to wait for that and see if I can then enable the package again?
Hi, same problem here. I have changed the phone, changed the USB-C connector, and I think I already tried a factory reset.
Sorry to insist, but can the gear itself be the problem ? Just to know if I have to replace it with the warranty or if there is another solution...
I actually completely forgot this topic still existed. I have already fixed this issue by doing a factory reset on my phone. This seems to be the only way to fix this. I also recommend to not use a package disabler for the Gear VR service.
Well, I already tried factory reset and it still doesn't work. It must be the headset. Thanks anyway
Hello everyone
I have a quick solution to this problem
You don't have to factory reset your phone or Uninstall any app
The only thing you need to do is go to apps >then click in the right upper corner and select "special access" then go to "device admin apps" and disable package disabler.
I hope it helps someone in the future [emoji2]

This worked for me. Have a Note 8 and bought the new headset for it and it stopped working a few months after buying it. Couldn't find a fix anywhere. Was going to reset it but the screen broke and had to get a new phone anyways, still wouldn't work though. I think it's one of the updates.
Anyways, I deleted cache and data from the mentioned apps in the instructions, restarted phone, connected to headset and it asked to reinstall apps. After doing so it still wouldn't work.
I then went to battery settings and under optimization I turned off everything related to the mentioned apps in the instructions, restarted the phone and voala, it's finally working again. Thank you kind sir.
There may be other ways but this was the first to work for me.

Hello!
I was playing with rooted image and decided I do not really need that. so i reset my Gear, reflashed with stock and wanted to set it up to my liking.
Turned out that the Featured Apps list now is not including some of the apps - the ones I had installed on the rooted image. Of course this are the ones I really want......
I was able to install ebay, runtastic and spedometer from apk's I found in another thread. But Evernote and Glympse will not install, they just say "Not installed" at the end of install.
Also - when I go to Samsung Apps in Gear manager the apps I want are impossible to download as they just say "View in Gear Manager".
Also - the apps mentioned show in Notifications section of Gear Manager but not on the watch.
Any idea hot to reset Gear Manager to get rid of the problem?
BTW: I tried removing GM and reinstalling - of course the problem is still there.
Thx.
I was looking around for a way to use the gear VR with Cardboard apps and all I could find was to just not insert the usb all the way or tuck it under the micro usb plug, I knew there had to be a better way. There is. With this easy trick you can use all the Cardboard apps and watch SBS 3D using a player like BS player easy.
Here's how to use the Gear VR outside of the native Oculus app, and it's soooo easy. Note: You'll need to be rooted for this to work.
1. download the App Quarantine app from the play store and install it.
2. Create a widget and select the App Quarantine widget. Select the "Gear VR Service" as the app to freeze/defrost.
Bam, that's it. When you want to use a Cardboard app just click the widget, then lock icon, and then load the Cardboard app you want to use before inserting the phone into the headset. If you want to watch a SBS 3D movie in BS player just load it, pinch to zoom out a bit (fiddle with this to get it to your liking), click play and put on the headset and you're set. With a BT game controller you can even control the the playback.
When you're ready to go back to the Gear, just click the widget again and then the unlock icon. So simple...
If this helped give me a thanks below! Have fun, this headset rocks!!!!
Edit: Just to clarify, this will only work with Cardboard apps that don't require the magnetic clicker. However, I have found if you have a high power neodymium magnet laying around you can just swipe it by the end of the headset (kind of quickly) and it will trigger the clicker. Kinda lame for shooter games, but it's a workaround...
Nice. I'm going to try it, before Google or Samsung fives it
It also works to just put the phone in below the microusb plug - it fits fine..

I know, mentioned that in the first paragraph. Just don't think it's a good idea to put the unesacerry strain on the USB connector and have a less than secure fit (don't want the phone crashing to the floor). This only takes 2 seconds to do and allows for a secure docking of the phone.
The Note will need this connectivity if 3rd party devs are going to use the tracking data from the headset in their apps. Way lower latency than using the phone's sensors...

Nice idea but you do need root for that app right? Can the Note 4 be already rooted without tripping the Knox counter?
You do need to be rooted. Haven't seen a way to root without tripping Knox, yet...

Might need to point that out in a revision, since that means this helps only about 5% of current N4 owners. Boo to no root!
I would like to use my other video players since the player built in does not cover all codecs or AC3.
It appears you must already have made a connection to the Gear VR in order to have the Gear VR Service? I too, cannot see this service anywhere. I have a Exynos model Note 4 (N910U) and it is my understanding that the Exynos models are not yet compatible with the VR. I've been trying to find the service used to auto launch whatever it is the VR auto launches to try and disable that with DisableService but have yet to find this. Any ideas?

Try rebooting your phone and looking for the Gear VR service again. If you have the Gear installed it should be there.

My guess is that you'll have had to make a connection at least once and will definitely need to have installed the Gear apps first. I would install the gear, run through the setup, reboot, put the phone into the gear and then remove it, install the App Quarantine app and then try it. Should work.

This won't work for me or anyone who cannot make that initial connection: we'll have to find another way or wait until the Gear VR supports the Exynos Note 4s. Right now, the N910U will not work with Gear VR until it receives a firmware update supporting it. I received confirmation directly from Samsung about this yet no details as to when the Exynos models will receive support. Way to go, Samsung, for making this perfectly clear to those looking to buy the Gear VR.

I would think if the gear app launches when you attach it (even if only to notify you it's not compatible) there has to be a service running. Should be able to freeze it and attach the Gear without the app launching...
If you have no need for the Gear apps just yet (until you can update your phone), just use Titanium backup and freeze any app you see related to the Gear VR and you should be able to attach it to the phone without anything happening. The touchpad should also be recognized as a mouse and volume and back buttons should also work.

You're not understanding though... the Exynos models are not compatible with Gear VR, period. When you plug them in you get a black screen and that's it. Nothing gets launched, installed, etc. The Gear VR service is not present until you make that first connection and get the software. I guess the software resides on the Gear VR itself and is pushed to the Note 4? I don't know exactly how it works. I just know it won't work
I also don't know if it's all Exynos models but I know for sure it's not compatible with N910U.
I have an Exynos version and I was able to successfully stop the gear vr service.
Download an app called Disable Service and you should see the Gear VR Service there. Just force it to stop.
Alternatively, you can go into Settings, Applications Manager and Force it to Stop from there.
Once Stoped, it should work.
One thing I noticed though, was that Im having difficulties finding good convergence with other apps. I dont know whether this is due to my large IPD (73) or due to the fact that these apps are not optimized for the Gear VR.
Theres cool app for cinema called Cmoar VR cinema, but I was unable to find proper focus with this app.

And what's your baseband? ANK5? ANK7? I'm N910U (Hong Kong) ANJ5 and the Gear VR service does not exist. We have yet to receive the firmware update making this model compatible with Gear VR.

I'm tempted to try Taiwan ANK7. I've never done that before though... that should work right? Both models are N910U.
I still can't get the widget to show the vr services, when I go direct to the app I see the VR services just fine ... Damn you, tricky VR
Lo folks,
as it has not been mentioned here, there is a method without the need for root posted on reddit:
https://www.reddit.com/r/GearVR/comments/3c061s/cardboard_on_gear_vr_for_s6_easy_nonroot_solution/
Just received my Gear VR today and was looking for a solution to use Cardboard apps without rooting my phone.
Here it is:
- Install Package Disabler from the PlayStore
- Open it and check the box on the Gear VR Service
That's it. You can now plug your S6 into the Gear VR without Oculus Home starting up and use Cardboard apps.
To use Oculus Home again, just uncheck the Gear VR Service in Package Disabler.

The cool part is that the touchscreen and the back button is still working!
If you enable the "Developer Mode" in the Gear VR Service (before disabling it), you will also get the bonus of low persistence which makes the experience much better!
So have fun and all credits to enzo1982 @ reddit
This was a game-changer for me! I finally know what Cardboard apps look like with a good headset... pretty rough really. But I'm glad I can use the Gear VR for Cardboard apps now, instead of my crappy cardboard unit.
works with s6
This also works with the s6.
I cant enter developer mode because i have to have an app installed with my own signed osig file and im not sure how to do that.

This is the easiest way to do it:
First install the SideloadVR app from www.sideloadvr.com.
Then complete their setup (in the app) to get your signature file.
After this you just have to download any app with SideloadVR as it gets automatically signed with your personal signature file. :good:
Thanks, this is a very good solution

Be specific and we should be able to find a solution.
1. What step specifically doesn't work?
2. By service do you mean Gear VR service using Package Disabler Pro?
Hi guys. Could you please tell me where to find the developer mode for the gear vr service?
Edit: Found it out by myself. I also have to try the upper solution with my own apk.

If you use package disabler to disable Gear VR Service, normal phone screen is what you wanted. You start a Cardboard app first, then put it in the headset at the appropriate step in order to use the app without starting Oculus software.
It's finally working on my S7 Edge. Just tried to reinstall Package Disabler. You have confirm this Knox Disclaimer on the first occasion. I skipped back and retried resulting in an not working admin state.
Gesendet von meinem SM-G935F mit Tapatalk
Installed package disabler but when i try to check gear vr service it says "This packag cannot be disabled.deactivate adminfrom settings -> Security -> Device Administrator". i checked the settings. package diabler has got admin access. the "Gear VR Service" text is written in magenta. im using the S7.
any ideas on how to solve the problem?
edit: the error message occurs no matter what programm im trying to disable. even with self installed apks.
edit2: solved the problem. @all if you encounter the same problems, reinstall the app and it should work.

Play store link in OP is "not available in [my] country," and this one is "not found on this server."
Are there any free alternatives? This is pure bullcrap on oculus and I do not want to pay for this small fix.
if you look around the web more, you will find that you can "hack" it in many ways - disable the startup of the special GearVR drivers, don't plug the phone in (stick it "under" the flap with the usb plug, or even make your own "jumper" to switch of the OTG aspect.
Yes, you loose the sensors inside the GearVR unit, but cardboard doesn't use them anyway!
So just look around - there are ways to do it that are "free" (but again, YMMV)
I've got the regular s7 running cardboard, but i can't find a qr code for my phone. I've found qr viewer codes for the s6, but that is the closest. Has anyone found one?

Hows its going for s9+ And such?
Hi, I just got my Gear VR yesterday and really want to use some cardboard stuff as well. I bought Package Disabler Pro and disabled Gear VR Service so it is working, however it is all jittery and I think this is because I haven't been able to enable Developer Mode which will let me take advantage of the gyroscope in the Gear VR.
I have also installed Sideload VR and uploaded my Sig file and installed an app (MindMyths Meditation) with the sig file apparently included.
I don't have an option in PDP for dev mode, and I tried another method with instructions that were for the S6, where you go to Applicatin Manager and Gear VR Service but that doesn't work, because the Application Info screen looks different on the S7.
I don't want to root. Has anyone else with an S7 figured this out? Cheers
it is jittery a bit, but you just tap the build number in the about phone menu 6 times and it enables developer mode.
To get gear developer mode you have to go
Settings
Applications
Application manager
Gear vr service
Storage
Manage storage
Tap gear vr version #
I have done all this and installed an apk with my osig but when I try to enable it I get a message stating "you are not a developer"
Work for me thanks

Well for me I tried sideloadvr with no success I ended up having to sign them myself through command prompt
Cool thing is that you can launch all the Gear VR apps without having it plugged in but unfortunately, the phone does not use its own gyroscope, uses the one in the HMD.
@ chiikko561 how did you sign by hand?

is there any workaround for this?
But, above all: what are the gyros on HMD for, if GearVR compatible phones ALREADY have gyros?!?
As some of you know, Samsung not only stopped supporting Samsung VR, they actually sabotaged the app totally by not allowing new installs to open.
Essentially there is a user agreement that you have to agree to but it requires an “internet connection” to accept but this is the part which was sabotaged.
I believe that Samsung took the verification server offline so the app always thinks you are not connected.
I need someone to look into how that verification happens and how it can be circumvented.
As a backup, if anyone knows a SPECIFIC version of Samsung VR app which does not have this verification process (sideloaded) please post the version.
UP i need too please somebody help
anyone who has a samsung vr app backup via titanium backup please share
Only the old ones work without Internet connection. The last working one is Samsung VR 1.59.4.
Check here: android-apk.org/com.samsung.vrvideo/
It also works with the Oculus Go.
Can anyone test this with an Oculus Quest 2 ?
this is backup from titaniumbackup

Made a little progress....
I was playing around trying to get Gear VR to work on my new Galaxy S20 plus, I tried installing Occulus from the app store but when I plugged the phone into the GearVR nothing would happen, so I Extracted all the Occulus and GearVR apps from my old S9 into APK's and then sideloaded them onto my S20, and now when I plug it in, it tries to load the setup program but it comes up with an error saying I have no network connection.... is there any way around this?
hi,
i found workaround
1. uninstall Gear VR SetupWizard ( 3.2.03.9 )
2. install version ( 3.0.21 ) from aptoide : https://gear-vr-setupwizard.pl.aptoide.com/app
3. run setup, configure, upgrade to newest version
and it works

Hi. We have tried to put the 3.0.21 version on and it has installed on phone but don't know how to get it to link with the Gear VR (SMR325) . Anyone with suggestions?

Just tried. It doesn't work. It installs fine, opens fine (no messages), shows that gridded floor pattern (of very old versions of Samsung VR) but nothing else happens (no buttons to click on, no nothing. Just void.
Did you find a way to make Samsung VR to work on Quest 2 ?

I have the APK for version 2.12.7 and it works fine in my Gear VR with Samsung Galaxy S7 (yes, the phone still works too).
I'm not sure exactly what you're trying to do, but it's not only the verification server they shut down. The whole online video server was shut down. So, I do see a "No internet connection" message, but I'm still able to click the other buttons and explore my local media folders using this app, which is exactly what I want to do.
However I was not able to port this version (or any other APK I found) to my Quest 2. The closest I got was to install an Oculus Go APK on the Quest 2, but when I open the app and the "No internet connection" message appears, my Quest 2 controllers are not recognized, so I can't click anywhere to browse my folders. Is that your issue too?
Anyways, I'm in desperate need of a Samsung VR APK that works with Quest/Quest 2. Please let me know if you come across this APK.
I have the same problem with my new Galaxy S10+ now. I cannot accept the terms and conditions in Samsung VR because it says "no internet connection". I tried with SIM and wireless also, but no luck.
I have a Galaxy S9+ too, there i accepted Samsung VR terms and conditions long before Samsung switched off the verification server. So on the S9+ i can still use Samsung VR.
Even tho I noticed in the recent months that on the S9+ it also says "no internet connection", but probably in the appdata folder is a flag or file which they check if you accepted their ToS. If thats not there you cannot go forward to the main menu of Samsung VR.
So I see only one way and this would be you need a Titanium Backup from the Samsung VR app where the ToS are already accepted. Then you also would need to root the new phone that you can install Samsung VR with app data right?
Or is there any way to inject appdata of Samsung VR to your new phone without having root access?
Someone tried that if that even works?

Can confirm that restoring app+data won't work.... at least the backup I found in this thread not.
Restored app+data in Titanium backup and still asks to accept terms with no internet connection..
Best regards,
Niels
I just fixed it, the app checks a txt file in the root Android\data\com.samsung.vrvideo folder. I made a zip file of that folder from my Galaxy S9+, it works at the S10+ too. Just copy that folder with the subfolders and the file inside to "Android\data\"
This folder is avaiable even without root. Even tho I dont see any content in that folder with the normal file manager on the phone, but once you plug your Galaxy to a regular PC you can access that Android/data folder.
So when you unzip it, the path to the file should look like this:
Android\data\com.samsung.vrvideo\files inside that folder 2 files: "VR360Video_3_00_0_EULA_agreed.txt" and "MVRI.txt"
My Samsung VR App now opens without that EULA message and works in offline mode.
Let me know if its working!

This is working!!
Thanks a lot, never thought this would be this simple!!
Best regards,

Great! Yeah I was surprised too, that no one else found it out before. I almost deleted it while resetting my S9+ but then I checked that Android/data folder lol...
I must be missing something here. Aside from the Android\data\com.samsung.vrvideo\files directory and associated files, what other apk's should be installed? I've installed the oculus app from the Play store and it still does not launch when I place my S21 into the Gear VR headset.
The play store oculus app does not work with gearvr. It has to be installed by the gearvr setup app.
can someone explain/walk me through the process like i'm 5. Just pulled out my gear vr for the first time in a year and am trying to get it to work with my old s9+ that had to be factory reset.
