I have been reading up on the Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition and the TF701T. I really would like some advice on helping to decide which way to go. I will list a few questions I have and concerns I have to see if any of you current users can help lead me to a decision.
Thanks in advance.
I know the primary differences between the 2. What I would like to know is has any one had any issues with rooting or putting roms on this? I have a Galaxy S4 and it really made me shy away from Samsung. I will never buy a phone from them that's for sure. Love the power it has and the screen is decent (a little dark) but getting roms on it is a nightmare. I've had a few different Android devices and loved all of them rooting and replacing the roms have been awesome! I just don't want to get one and find out that I'm going to have the same issues I have with my phone now. I realize that phones are different in the respect to the need to have extra protection requested by the phone companies. Thats why I'm reaching out to you to see what your experiences are.
Needs... I need to be able to use a Gumdrop or Otter box case as I have a 2 and 4 year old that will probably be using it at sometime or another. I also need it to have a decent battery life as I will most likely us it for work and play.
Wants... Speed, reliability, durability, Root, Roms, Games, and expand-ability.
I don't care about the stylus so that's not a reason to get this device. I will want a clean rom without all the Samsung garbage that this send with it.
Hope I can get some help with ideas here as I currently have a TF700T and aside from the ram shortage I love it. But time to give that to the kids and get Dad a new tab.
Again thanks for all the incite and opinions.

Have you taken a look at the Samsung Tab S? It has a incredible screen and has better value for money then Note 10.1 IMHO.
This is a really great device.
I don't think feels bulletproof. But maybe that is why its so light. Its kind of like plastic. The TF101 had a more industrial solid state feel like the surface pro.
I doubt this will be over clocked cause it gets warm. It is probably pushing its limits already.
Overall its quite snappy with great performance especially considering its a mobile device.
This is the only android device I know of that features a dock which is like $150 for me which is why I don't have it yet. That would make it feel more complete I guess.
There's no USB 3.0 Port on the tablet. Don't let the ad fool you. If you want that I guess its just with the dock. The tablet part has a micro HDMI port. That's what fooled me cause I thought it was micro USB. But I got the vivo tab extension which is only USB 2.0.
Performance and high resolution and visual quality for games . Not really an issue with rooting it besides potentially having to flush it down the toilet afterwards.
Thanks
Thanks for the advice this gives me more to look in to. I will broaden my horizons to include these 2 tabs. One thing I didn't mention is that I really want the 10" screen so if they don't sport that I'm going elsewhere. I have a smartphone and computer so when I get a new tab it must be 10".
Again Thanks

ASUS and Samsung devices have pretty much the same amount of bloatware, so be prepared to unlock and root whichever you decide for.
If you are a lot into gaming you will get better gaming performance with a 1920x1080 tablet, like the Sony Z2 Tablet, which is a really nice, waterproof, but expensive tablet. Both the Tegra 4 and Snapdragoon 800 isn't always capable to deliver good fps in graphic intense games with the 2560x1600 displays. On the other hand this displays will of course give you a sharper picture when reading or web surfing.
I got my TF701 on a sale out and for the price I paid I think it is a good tablet, especially the prolonged battery life with the keyboard dock, although I have a hard time to get over how cheap it feels compared to my old TF101.
The Samsung Note 10.1 and Tab S 10.5 have one big advantage over the ASUS TF701: they are much more future proof. For an example they have 3 GB ram and 802.11ac wifi. But most important, IMHO, is that they will get an official Lollipop 5.0 update. The TF701 will _probably_ not, since it was not on ASUS list with devices they are going to update. (There is a chance that ASUS haven't decided yet if the TF701 will get the update or not).
The Samsung tablets also have a wider community development support, meaning more custom roms, custom kernels and other tweaks. And having a offical 5.0 update to base custom roms on is a big plus. (There is two versions of the Tab S: Snapdragon vs Exynos, I don't know if there is any difference in community support.)
I have never liked Samsung that much but the Tab S 10.5 is really worth trying out, the OLED display is amazing and it feels small and liteweight compared to the TF701. The Samsung display is also very good in bright conditions or outdoors, while the TF701 have poor brightness.
Still, if you really want a dock with hardware keyboard and external battery and are prepared to not receive any offical updates in the future the TF701 is IMHO a good buy if you can find it really cheap.
again thank you do much for your reply.
I'm going to be researching these tabs over the holiday weekend. Thanks again for all the insight. Just to be more clear games is not the forefront of my purchase. While I will play some games I have a PC gaming rig for that. So just simple games like the ones u aquire on humble bundle.

I dont play games either anymore, but i had to say XCom is one amazing beast of a game and the new enemy within expansion. I just had to get it for the PC because the art and visual quality is just fantastic. Really a classic with replay value. Not sure it takes full advantage of this hardware. :good:
99% decided.
After listening to many different opinions and watching videos I'm pretty settled on getting the Samsung Galaxy S 10.5. It was suggested I broaden my horizons a bit to include this tab in my research and I'm glad I did. The performance is identical to the 2014 but it has an LED screen giving it a brighter screen darker blacks and a crisper image. It also has a ROM that removes KNOX. This was a major concern for me because of the dislikes I have experienced with my S4 Phone. Gumdrop also makes a case for this and doesn't make one for the TF701T. I love their cases and as long as they are in business I will be purchasing them. Unless the TF701T pulls out some crazy feats in the next few days I will be purchasing the Tab S.
Thanks to all who have offered their opinions and considerations. I really appreciate them all. If anyone has any last note please don't hesitate to add to the pile I will consider more options.

Can I use my TF700T keyboard with the TF701?
nope

Looking at getting one of these phones but not sure which route to go. They are about the same price, in the right range for me, I will be using t mobile. What are any drawbacks you have found with the note 4? I feel like the OPT has a community behind it, so will be seeing a wider variety of roms etc. For the upcoming MM update. I really want the OPT but, a few problems keep me eyeballing the note 4 like no fast charging, USB c(super minor) and just the fact I feel more comfortable with Samsung or devs here making good impovements to the note 4 for some time. Now on to the note 4, mostly I'm just weary after MM, support for this device will be less and less even here and it will be and old paperweight before I turn around. Please any input and opinions to help my decision thank you P.S. please add your experience with different custom roms and the pros/cons as I would like to know this as well.
So let's starts this off by saying that one plus killed it this year with this phone. One of my favlrity phone, i preffer over the nexus 6p
But unfortunately I'm going to go back to the s7edge. So I switched over to the one plus 3 due to root limitations and also wanted to walk away from touchwiz. I love the one plus 3 don't get me wrong but I guess there was something I was missing with the s7edge I mean. Tbh phones are in a stage where root is not really that valuable as it was about a year or two ago.
Ex. Samsung themes, allows you to change quick, overcloking.. umm not needed in neither device the one plus or s7edge (snapdragon 820). Phones are too advance for that need. I mean yes there is some good stuff still about rooting like exposed etc. But unless your a die hard cmte guy I wouldn't buy a device based on just root. Also I missed water resistance and Samsung pay. I know Samsung has a lot of gimmicks but by far the best mobile payment... and let's not forget that Damm display.. I never really appreciated until I put booth phone next to each other. The one plus 3 looks a bit washed out. I think is because the high blues in the display calibration. And srgb looks a bit too warm.
If you have anything to say please feel free!! as I want to know if anyone feels like me, or had the same experience.
I love the one plus comunity.
Cool story bro. Here's a cookie for your troubles.
All the best....
Well, if i was sitting in pile of money i could too do decisions like that but because im not im "stuck" with my awesome phone. After all, it is just el-cheapo top of the line phone.
Is this thread a Samsung ad?
Go ahead mate..
Aside all hate, I'd probably keep both phones if I have tonnes of money! I have used both phones. Now I do own OP3. Camera wise, OP3 is nowhere near the S7E. Performance wise.. oh comon... OP3 OP3 OP3!!!!!!!!!! I'd prefer Overall performance(lag free) over camera. I know the importance of lag free experience because I lived more than 1 year with LG G3.
S7E is one of the best phones for sure. So does the OnePlus 3!!!

I agree with you and yes I'll be keeping booth phones. This is not a Samsung add as clearly stated on the post one plus the 3 is beast phone you definitely get a lot more for your money than samsung. I'm simply sharing my experience. And idk how money came along in this. But okay.
I have absolutely nothing negative to say about the one plus.

I do believe in the famous slogan for one plus. "The flagship killer" and I'm stuck in money? Well I'm not my s7edge was purchased when my girlfriend got her s7 I went ahead and got the s7edge as it was buy one get one free and I only paid the difference between the s7 and the edge.
Ok bro bye.. Hav fun with ****sung samdung Shamesung.. While we get aosp and quick android N.. You will be busy trolling with Lagwiz..
Loosing root, custom recovey, unlocked bootloader and custom kernels and ROMs is not worth it, u r going to have issues with the OS on any Android rom, but with theses it's easy to go back or clean flash and restore backups, so all of that is worthing it to keep a working phone
What the [email protected]#€& is that? What kind of a thread is this? It's your problem /opinion... Use Facebook for that kind of sh#€... Bye

Yup..the S7 edge is a really good phone.
Anyway, if you don't mind to lose the various Custom ROM and mods..it's ok!
But that's the truth..a very powerful Hardware with only Sammy ROMs.
I bought op3 not only for the Hardware, but for it's capability to be more developed..there are many ROMs, for now just AOSP and one MIUI..but i think that there will be Ubuntu Touch too, Flyme OS and many other stuff.
But don't worry.. yours is a good choice!
I bought only samsung phones in the past, and my last sammy phone was the edge plus..a really good phone, but i hate to spend so much for a Phone thaf offers a powerful Hardware like OP3 (op3, 2gb RAM more).
Sorry for my bad English, I'm Italian
S7edge is very good phone, for end user who doesnt like to tinker. And simply use their phone as it is, with all goods and bads
it just doesn't worth it's price. Well, it will, once it drop by $100-200
I' don't understand half of this People as I clearly stated the one plus is an extremely good phone and all I said was based on my opinion. Everyone has their own opinions. I still have my one plus so when ever I do want to try something I can just pop in a sim. I'm not saying the s7 is better. In every aspect but it's a better display and Samsung pay which are the only two benefit that I mentioned. I love the one plus. But w.e people get upset if someone shares their opinion this is comunity. If I wanted to bash the one plus three which in no mean I do. I would bring up FACTUAL imformation stating where it falls behind the s7edge which I dint. Because I don't believe it does. It's a great device for its price and to develope. I even liked it more than nexus 6p. Which I had previously

And I agree 100$ it's very pricy and if I had to chose between both devices at retail I chose the one plus in. Heart beet.
Well...the OP states feel free to comment and now we do....

Hello Guys,
i need your opinion because i really want to avoid any failure.
PLAN A: I was using the Huawei P9 Plus (bad OTA support) until December. Now I'm using the new Pixel and might want to trade its predecessor with a Nexus 6.
I really like the developer friendliness of the nexus series and i like to do something with the phone. Not simple use it for music, videos and messaging. I like flashing ROM's, Kernels and such things. Something you cannot even dream of with Huawei phones (except they're Nexus devices).
PLAN B: I could sell it on ebay and buy the 6p from the money. But i doubt that I'll get 400 bucks for this device. The screen has some flaws, no cracks but scratches. I doubt that one would recognize them.
Help me out of my first world problems. I mean if i have a backup phone this time i want one that is a real android device.
Thanks in advance guys! i really appreciate your time

are you guys enjoying the 3t? worth every penny? will u upgrade to the next one plus this year? is it worth waiting?
As long as they continue to update the 3t the way they are, I'll be keeping mine for a while. Phone works great, looks great and I'm experiencing great battery life on the stock rom
I'm simply in love with mine. It has AMOLED display, hardware that secures future, good camera.
This can be told about many phones, but... Do they have so frequent software updates? Beta twice a month! Actually, developers are listening to people's opinions (obviously can't listen to everyone).
From what I've seen, many people who changed their phones from s7e/nexus to OP3T are really content with it.
Battery life is another great thing, it easily goes through a day and charges so quickly!
If you don't need a new phone urgently, you might as well wait for the next OnePlus phone. As much as we don't want to face it, OnePlus is likely going to put development for the 3/3T on the back-burner once the next generation of phones are released (looking at you, OP2). That said, the OP3/T is certainly an excellent device and worth its current price.
yeah its a killer phone. id get one. just did in fact.
Brian
I upgraded from the S7 edge to the 3t (like 2weeks ago) and I love this phone. Way ahead of the game, not a single particle of lag. That said, I will probably upgrade once the 5 comes out; as I love having the latest tech, but yeah. Getting this phone right now was worth it for me.
Upgraded from 6p and really like it!,
Just 2 features i really miss front stereo speakers and camera everything else is perfect for me
Best supported phone ive ever owned. Even with the nexus one, support from google still doesnt compare to oneplus.

Is that whats happened to oneplus 1 and 2?
Uhm, no idea.
I justified spending 400+ EUR on the 3T, because I thought at the time that I'm going to keep it for at least two years. And now I'm tempted to upgrade to the 5, because fsck yeah, this phone is awesome, can't wait for the next model. I'll just give this to someone in the family.
I looked to upgrade to something else but seriously - there's nothing else out there. It's at the top of it's game. Get it now, or if not in hurry for a few months. Wait.
Rumor
There is a rumor on OP 5 that it has a ceramic/glass back. Well if you don't wanna break it then...
Nothing official so.....
I still love the block type metal of the OP 3T so it is my ideal choice
When does one plus release its device?. Is it in August?..

It's all just rumor at this point. No announcement yet. And manufacturers usually don't tip their hand too early. Doing so would not only potentially damage the sales of the current device, but also may give their competition an edge.
I've seen some stories around that state that Samsung is buying up all the Snapdragon 835 supply. And being the Android market juggernaut, most (all?) other manufacturers are going to have to wait to get the 835. This alone may cause OnePlus to delay a launch.
The OP3T is amazing and I think OP5 will be even more. If you aren't in a hurry, would be nice to wait.
OP3t is a great device. Even if OP stops updates at nougat, the dev support will continue.
Look at the OPO, it has perfect nougat ROMs that are current. The OP3t will continue on with devs, cause it's a solid built device (as was the OPO). The OP2 had no nfc and the crap 810 cpu, and still solid on dev support.

I currently have a Note 5 and am looking to pick up another device for some additional R00T fun. My ONLY concern is the 1080p screen. I know this sounds absurd but we've been spoiled with 1440p. Can you really actually see a noticeable difference?

I understand you haha. I was a little worried myself, as a lot of people hyped it "down" .
Honestly, Samsung has the best screens any phone manufacturer can have. Comparing both, I noticed that the colors looked better on the S7 edge, and that the S7's screen gets brighter. Are those deal breakers? Absolutely not. The screen is great and 1440 p is not different compared to 1080p .
It'll definitely take the screen downgrade for a absolutely lagfree device. It's been almost 2 weeks and not a single app, or animation has lagged. Also battery life is great. Damn I still feel like I'm not using this device to its full capabilities lol
With how things are going, they seem to have found the hardware they really love, so they're developing their software now. I think they want to love their software as much as their hardware, so they may be sticking with the 3t. Look how many special editions are coming out, they got an otterbox deal and they acrually ship on time now.

If you want to use some vr hardware, then yes, 4k is better. Otherwise 1080p is faster to drive, and uses less power. So it's a trade-off.
I would get it definitely. Well i already did actually. Great phone I love it definitely worth the money and had a great supporting dev community. And if your worried about oneplus stopping updates it's no big deal cause there a lots of custom roms for this phone and there is a great community surrounding it.
