What (if any) Xiaomi features lost when flashing custom ROM - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

Hi,
newb question.
Are there any Xiaomi stock ROM features lost if I flash a custom ROM?
For example, the sony Z2's you could potentially lose some of the Sony camera features when you flashed a custom ROM/firmware.
Thanks

U lose by Sony some keys, if I do it not right most custom roms support emulated keys.
Samsung got Knox..
And Xiaomi got nothing, camera quality is very good at rr.
And the speed is not the same as on the bloody miui this is way more faster and way more stable.

yeah it is
u lost everything in term of security and cloud(mi cloud was really good syncing our file like recorder file, sms, call log, etc)
miui is okay for daily uses. bcos i cant lose those feature so im flasing xiaomi.eu which really light and stable, no bloatware like google movie, google music, etc.
just use launcher if u dont like the look

Second space and dual apps.

Miui find mydevice
If device lost/stolen u can remote and lock as iOs iphone does
They cant open ur device without mi account access
of course better with locked bootloader it gives you more security
Yeah all android can do that with Android device manager but not as good as miui or ios
Dual apps also my favorite feature
So much clone apps out there but they dont have feature like dual apps by miui

Thanks for your answers.

And the camera's features though. No long exposure, no time lapse, no slow motion. Although you can make a way around by using third party app but they won't optimized for Mi 5 camera.

MIUI is just so... broken.

I guess this post is more to vent than anything else, but I can't believe how horrible MIUI (both 8.5 and 9) are when it comes to certain things. Basically, my biggest issues are as follows:
1. It's a huge pain to connect a Gear S3. I need to use an older version of Samsung S plugin, as the newest update crashes all the time. I need to disable MIUI optimizations in developer settings just to get it to pair, etc.
2. Gmail notifications! All I get is a '1 new message' then I have to swipe down with two fingers in order to see who the email is from, or what it's about. I'd use a third party email client, but notifications don't work very reliably with any of them that I've tried. Just a mess.
3. LINE. Here in Asia, Japan especially, everyone uses LINE to message each other, somewhat like I imagine people in Europe must use Whatsapp. I have to install an old version of LINE, or else with the latest version, you just get a blank notification in MIUI 8.5, and a blank notification with no sound or vibration in MIUI 9. Again, a huge mess.
I can get around these issues by using RR or Mokee, but things like bluetooth audio (in RR's case) and SafetyNet issues (in Mokee's case) exist, and it's not possible to use Netflix or my bank's apps with any AOSP-based ROM I've tried. Seriously, what a mess. It wasn't a cheap device. I hope they get their act together and release something that works soon, but something tells me that won't happen, and I'll need to wait for some third party AOSP-based rom to come along and save the day. But for now, it just can't be my daily driver.
I've been using MIUI since version 5, and there are things on MIUI that just don't work. The way notifications are viewed is a real pain. Just this last year or so, they finally implemented swipe away notifications on the lock screen. That just shows you how behind they are with simple tasks.

Well i have to admit, i'm not a big fan of Miui either... what f***s me up the most is the huge load of bloatware in almost any corner of it.
Notifications are another issues. I used to have the mate 8 with Emui, so i'm spoiled, because it had more detailed notifications.

I just use the material notification shade app and it basically fixes all of the notification issues.
Thanks for the tip, didnt know two fingers worked.
On lock screen I just swipe to right, and the right and it goes away.

EU ROM fixes the bloat.
Material Notification Shade is a kludgy fix for the notifications.

Don't you have the issue of a bottom strip of the screen is unusable with Material Notification Shade? I like this app very much and it somewhat fixes the MIUI notifications issue but this problem is keeping me away from using it on a daily basis. Note that I chose to hide the nav bar on my Mi Mix 2 (using Edge Gestures instead).

Yeah, if you you use MNS, you cannot hide the Nav bar, else the bottom screen does not respond to taps. That is why I said it is a kludgy fix.
Latest EU rom 7.10.26 has introduced improvements to notifications. Gmail now shows subject and sender, and two finger swipe down shows content.
MIUI is garbage but this phone is great with custom ROM's. Running XenonHD's 10/25 build, toss in adaway and pixel launcher, substratum OMS'd "swift dark" theme, magisk running, viper4arise, android pay even works (bought a candy bar with an nfc payment).

Just compare similar apps from Google & Xiaomi.
The calculator is a perfect example,Xiaomi's permissions are well beyond reasonable, laughable if not so intrusive.
Not to mention having Clean Master, it's built-in to MIUI......

If you want to continue running it,thinking Xiaomi isn't pinging/constantly sending information to who knows where, knock yourself out.
Google is just as guilty w/their suite of apps/services,but for me,easier to manage/keep in check.

Want AOSP SOOO BAAAD! Any new news? :((((

Anyone know anything?
Yes, of course, pixels 3 just came out, that's it
since last time:
treble guy is making still another phone
ivan meler left cuz of toxicity of s8 xda people ( he said it )
able read what I write to him but he doesnt say anything
"bad guy" made bootable rom and left
I was trying almost half of year to find dev and do something myself but only thing I could do was fix?? mobile data in rr without fully working ril , ( So u are not able to call from it )
and there is sascha nesterowic who is making lineageOS16 ( If I am not wrong ) ,guy still got shool and he is trying to do something with it in free time so I wouldnt expect anything , better buy s9 or s7 cuz "8" serie is DEAD
If one was to load all of Google's apps (Dialer, launcher, keyboard, clock etc), then disable the Samsung apps using ADB, and install a Pixel theme, the phone would be almost AOSP and the camera would still work great.

So use taimen rom ??

Most stable rom that performs well

I actually really like this phone, except for the lack of good roms. im trying to find a stable one thats atleast as fast as the stock eui rom. i tried lineage os earlier this year and instantly felt slow withing 10 seconds of using it.

After march update i had many problems with P.E
I didn't try latest version.
But in evolution everything is good with many customisation
Gcam 6.2 works so well
I had 3 problem with it
Camera crashes after opening it for 10 - 15 times or when enabling face unlock(needs reboot)
Unable to send WhatsApp audio
My battery standby is poor (i used extensively for 3 years)
If you want most stable then go for stock(good if you debloat it) or small eui or try Android 6 or 7 roms. But you cant use gcam 6+ over there

I recently found a video from YouTube, where they used adb from pc to disable the bloatware. But you have to root the device to completely uninstall it, though it backfires sometimes and crashes system apps frequently.
Small eui is better(no bloatware) but it has aggressive ram and battery management so there are some issues like notification arriving late and longer background apps reloading time and also unable to customise the icons for default launcher

The face unlock is a bit slower than before, but overall seems more polish regarding the transitions and gestures.
Nevertheless, i think it needs a bit more "speed" on the transitions.

That's a easy fix,
Head over to " Developer Options " and change all Animation from 1 to 0.5
I did the bootloader unlock first. Broke the OTA. Can not be installed. Packet not matching the device.
Relocked the bootloader and it still does not work.
Did anyone update to Android 10 and unlocked the bootloader afterwards?
Sorry but last update is fu.ked up.Gestures in "System navigation" menu don't work.I can't choose this option. Only Virtual Navigation is available
Also I noticed much worse photos from stock camera

Blame Google for that, they managed to break the thirdparty launcher support in Q. If you want gestures, use the stock launcher.
Android Q problems
Any one else who can't se the files in file explorer? Nothing is erased but it won't show either. The same with music in music player. Also a bit lag especially when screen lock is on and I want to control apps running.
the update can only be made if no magisk root and no twrp is installed (if twrp and magisk is installed, the update cancels) whether the bootloader is unlocked is irrelevant during the update

No, blame ZTE. Google fixed this issue with 3rd party launchers back in December. ZTE didn't implement the fix prior to pushing their update. This is on them! And they need to push a fix ASAP cause this is unacceptable!
Does anyone of you experience slow camera? It loads forever. Also switching the lenses.
Both with ZTE camera and Google camera mod.
Plus desktop mode works now [emoji1]
but the DPI is very low on my full HD screen. So not much fun yet.
Android Q issues
Since the new update of my mobile, the ZTE axon 10 pro, to Android Q I am experiencing problems:
*I can't turn of battery saving mode which makes my gps often useless.
*The always on display shuts off when I select specific hours of operation for the always on display.
*When the screen is locked then the mobile doesn't respond directly when I press something, always with a few seconds delay.
*Native file explorer can't find my files, I need to install third party apps to solve it.
*Sometimes the phone freezes, especially when using Chrome.
The are other small issues as well.*
I would like to sideload the new update to see if the problems will disappear but I can't find the zip file for the new update .
Anyone that has the zip file for the global version?
Anyone with similar or other issues?
Any ideas how to fix these?
Thanks in advance!

I never turn battery save mode on. I will check it.
*The always on display shuts off when I select specific hours of operation for the always on display.
I never see this. Once I realized that it turned on with almost 1 minute delay but I didn't check it once again.
*When the screen is locked then the mobile doesn't respond directly when I press something, always with a few seconds delay.
It is always fine for me.
*Native file explorer can't find my files, I need to install third party apps to solve it.
I have never used built in file explorer but I tried it. It works fine for me.
*Sometimes the phone freezes, especially when using Chrome.
I don't know Chrome. I use Opera. Very rarely it waits for longer time but it comes back in reasonable time. The phone has never been frozen fully.
May be you should do factory reset and also get all update from Google Store.

Messaged ZTE about the EU update to the A2020G variant.
"Thanks for contacting ZTE, we are sorry for the inconvenience caused to you.
We would like to inform you, updates when available are sent onto the phones via OTA (over the air).
Also it will be released based on the IMEI numbers as well, hence we kinldy request you to wait for the notification on your device for the update."
Guess its luck of the IMEI draw .

The phone will not die, but you will have problems with the software, such as not recognizing the camera after taking a picture, the flashlight does not work, you can not change the Hz of the screen ...
This happened with Xiaomi.eu a long time ago, since they use the base ROM for spesn (the NFC variant) and had not made the necessary modifications to work in spes (the non-NFC variant).
I did it. And nothing bad will happen. What NeoSDAP says about the camera is bullsh*t, the camera works fine.
Look out the thread I created about the process and the result:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/is-it-safe-to-flash-indonesian-rom-over-a-global-rom.4534777/
Don't install the version with Android 12, I tried it some time ago it's messed up: weird default configurations and options missed. I saw there's an update for it, that probably fixed that but still, do it under your own risk.
I'm still using the lastest Indonesian ROM with Android 11. Except for the fact that apps like Netflix can't be downloaded from the Play Store because of the lack of Play Protect certification, everything else works like a charm. For apps you can't download from the Play Store like Netflix, you can download them from sites like APKPure and they work, so it's not really a problem either.
Good luck.

It also has the Mi Calendar app instead of Google's and the Mi Browser (besides Chrome). It also has the "App Vault" option for the left screen (-1 says the Launcher), not only Google Discover like the Global ROM. And the best thing about it for me it's that it's an official ROM. It's not a custom ROM that who knows what the hell was modified in it. I've using it for months and everything works fine.

NFC is hardware dependent. If your phone doesn't have the required hardware, NFC won't work. This is similar to FM radio.
I wouldn't suggest flashing ROM for another region on your phone, especially if your bootloader is locked. If you unlock your bootloader, it will give you a lot of flexibility and ability to troubleshoot problems.
