USB OTG + Charge ? - Galaxy Tab S2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have had a Nexus 7 (first gen) installed in the dash of my vehicle in place of the factory double-din head unit for over three years now using Timur's kernel that allows the USB port to have OTG USB function and allows USB 5v 1.8amp charge draw at the same time; I have a powered USB hub with 2 channel audio DAC going to my amplifiers, USB 256gb SSD for library storage, USB Joycon board for steering wheel controls, and a few other doodads that make it all works nice and friendly.
I would love to try out a tablet like the Samsung Tab series instead of using the Nexus 2012/13, the 2012 is becoming too dated to run the latest media apps and the idea of having an SD card slot to throw a 200GB card in rather than using external USB storage to eliminate Android from spontaneously having to rebuild the media library will be great. Also, that amoled panel will look far better than the cheap LCD tech in the nexus tablets.
Anyone know if the Galaxy Tab s2 can support USB OTG + USB 5v 1.8-2.4amp charge input simultaneously or if there is a kernel modification available for it?
Thanks a lot!

Samsung tablets for sure can support OTG Host/Charge for a tablet and peripherals. Here is a list of supported tablets:
Samsung Galaxy Tab A (10.1″)***
Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (8.0″, 9.7″)
Samsung Galaxy Tab E (9.6″)*
Samsung Galaxy Tab A (8.0″, 9.7″**)
Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 (8.0″, 10.1″)
Samsung Galaxy Tab S (8.4″, 10.5″)
Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro (10.1″, 12.2″)
You have to double check the firmware version that can be found here: lavalink.com/samsung-tablet-adapters-support/compatibility-list/. LAVA is the only manufacturer of adapters for Samsung tablets that allows that since Samsung doesn't sell anymore their hubs. These adapters will provide you enough power for the tablet and peripherals, and you can simultaneously access them. Plus, no tablet rooting is required so your warranty is save. Regarding, the SD card slot you have to double check which one offers it. Hope, that I helped a little bit. Good luck with your research!

One of these would be exactly what I am looking for, but it turns out their quite hard/expensive to get a hold of in Australia

I find it curious that they specifically mention stock, unrooted firmware. Will they still work if you are rooted?
Also, the Tab S2 is capable of pulling more power than the adapters can provide. If the screen is on, and very bright, you will still drain the battery, just much slower.

Hey guys, I have good news! After messing around/testing a few things it turns out all you need is a ~64.9k ohm (mine was 66.5k) resistor between pins 4 and 5 of the micro USB plug to enable OTG + Charging. I haven’t got much past prototyping it yet but I thought I’d share. Here’s a link to the post I sourced it from: https://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s3/general/hw-mod-usb-otg-charging-galaxy-s3-t1953061

Never checked that. I know its a kernel that decides if the tablet supports it or not.

For S2 they have eSTS line of products. One of their features is Screen Brightness Management (because of the draining), plus Battery Modulation to extend the longevity of the tablet (charging and discharging between "comfortable" brackets of Lithium Ion battery).

stevey500, did you solve this? I too live in Australia...

I'm trying to get this to work with no luck. The post you linked mentions shorting the data pins and making sure you have power when you plug the connector into the tablet, then pulling the data pin short after half a second. I tried several levels of resistance from 40k ohm to about 75k ohm with no luck. Unfortunately I couldn't get closer than ~5k ohms away. I tried stock and lineage versions with no luck. I can make OTG work but I can't get both at the same time. I'm also weary about the buying the simulcharge since no place has sold them in years and they mention only older stock FW. Not sure how well it will work without the software support. Anyway in the slight chance you see this I'd like to get more info on how you made the setup work in terms of HW and SW.
Edit: Found the rest of my resistors. Got it to 64.9 also tried +/- 100 and +/- 1k with no luck.

So I wasn’t able to reproduce the above results myself, I’m to sure what I did to get it to work. I did, however, get it to work by activating “lan hub” mode after messing around for a while. I think the resistance for it was around 110k ohms, but I may need to double check that.
I made a cable with that resistance across pin 4 & 5 and it seems to charge. As far as I can tell it’s only a slow charge (max 1A) so it may need a kernel modification to charge at 2A.

Awesome thanks for your help. I finally got it. 136k (2x68k resistors) ohms across the 4-5 pins. Didn't need to short the data pins. On this stock based rom. I'll have to check the Lineage rom I was using tomorrow. The only downside it that it requires power for the OTG to work in this mode vs a hard short which will allow OTG to run on battery. Not a huge deal though I can easily work around this with some relays. Charge does appear to be at ~1 amp (I only tried for a few minutes) which isn't a huge deal. I don't mind if it loses a bit of charge with heavy usage I just want it to have at least some charging.

Any other manufacture devices support this (some Chinese devices, like Xiaomi)?

Does Samsung Galaxy Tab A 7.0 support OTG+Charging at the same time?

I saw some custom Chinese tablets' builds that could support Host/OTG while charging, but they were not from major brands like Xiaomi. I also tested Lenovo Tab 4, and this tablet also supports this mode. Of course, we're only referring here to Micro USB tablets as USB-C tablets have a different methodology of supporting this functionality.

Helo,
I want to dig up that topic because I found tablet meeting my specifications, Kruger&Matz 7" EAGLE 702 (USB C!, LTE, radio, mini jack)
So I would like to ask will it work if I use HUB USB C to 4 x USB 3.0, one USB3.0 as tablet power and rest of usb's as data connections. Or should I buy USB C Splitter (USB C to 2x USB C)
Would be great if first option will be working because it have external power supply.

For anyone still looking into this again, the correct value for the Tab S2 SM-T713 (gts28vewifi) for OTG + Charge with the stock kernel (tested on LineageOS 16 and 17 for me) is 121k. This will set the device to a cable type of "UNIVERSAL_MMDOCK" which allows OTG as well as fast charging, up to 2.1A. Found in muic.h in the samsung kernel source:

Me too, exactly this set-up, same model year etc, its going into a 350Z.
According to Workshop twelve you can do it.
OTG/USB/Charge/HUB…. WTF?!?!? | Workshop 12 (workshoptwelve.com)
The 100K quoted is not working for me.
However I have tried 100K, 121K, 64K 65.9K 40K, 88K 89K all with no success so far.
The Lava simulcharge is not available in the UK, and to import it (on a chance it wont work) is costing over £100, I am reluctant to spend this on a chance.

Samsung SM-T585 wired to a Suyama Hub (De-Soldered the USB Micro lead and soldered my own new one in)
SUYAMA USB OTG Adapter for TV Stick 4K, All-New TV: AmazonSmile: Electronics
With power into the hub and a new Micro USB lead with 87.5K resistor between Gnd and sensor pins.
This now charges and provides 4 USB OTG ports.

Unusual HDMI port

I have a HDMI cable that works perfectly in a Samsung Galaxy S3 and the Note II, so I was certain there would be no problem using it on the Galaxy Camera, but it seems to be a proprietary port which is a fraction smaller than a micro USB.
I am a bit angry about this, as it means a (probably expensive) Samsung branded cable needs to be purchased. Considering how expensive the camera is, Samsung should have at least provided one.
The other problem is finding a retailer that sells one. I can't seem to locate one as yet.

Hi there, with regards to the HDMI port on the Samsung Galaxy Camera, I believe it is using a standard micro-HDMI sized connector. These ports have been in use on Android devices for a while now so you should be able to pick one up for a reasonable price rather easily. Here is an example of a cable that should work: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Micro-HDMI-...=US_Video_Cables_Adapters&hash=item1e6125af08
Good luck in your hunt!

Thanks for the info, I guess I was so used to a phone's multi use Micro USB socket I forgot that the camera has a separate HDMI socket and that it's pretty much standard! Doh!
I shall now buy a cheap one off eBay.

I know that Samsung HDMI cable are not compatible betwwen S2/Note and S3. I believe Note 2 and Galaxy Camera use same new format that S3 and it's probably why it doesn't work for you. but not 100% Sure.

Samsung uses 3 different types of connectors in their devices.
there's the regular mhl connector used in the note 1 and S2 which I think is a 6pin connector.
The note 2 and S3 use a Samsung mhl connector which has 11 pins and also allows you to use usb for sync/data transfer while outputting video.
and there's the regular old standard micro sized HDMI port which is used in the galaxy camera.
It's a tiny little port next to the battery, which requires a $0.50 adapter plug to get a full sized HDMI cable plugged in, or you can just use a cable with HDMI micro on one end and full sized HDMI on the other.

He says all we need is :
Micro 5-Pin to 11-Pin Converter Adapter
USB 2.0 A female to Micro USB B female adapter
40.2 k resistor
No idea, how to get this 40.2 K Resistor.

I am. Have half the parts already and in the middle of my note II mobile office build. Was looking for something like this.
I'm curious if the resistor value is different per output or strictly used to tell the phone its on a smart dock? Then how best to handle multiple usb ports? On my setup power is railed and managed separately so just dealing with usb devices on the note at the same time would be the only unknown I am dealing with.
Edit:
Had another look. Looks like most of the voodoo is smartly placed on his proto board and an in line usb hub is doing the rest. Would be nice to have a map of the pinouts or spec via the i/o being used in the conversion. Should be difficult (famous last words).
EDIT:
After looking at the listed parts I realized there are some missing items to all of this....
First: the small red dongle that gets plugged in first is essentially a modified 11pin male to 11 pin female butt connection that has 2 pins wired from it and shunted to the usb port he has tapped to a pice of cardboard. I would guess somewhere in there a resister is placed for the usb i/o. That supposed to be a 11 pin to 5 pin conversion?
Second: everything past that little dongle is all plug and play. The hdmi adaptor and in line usb hub are separate components and are decided by the dongle.
So with a few dollars for the connectors a, substrate, some shrink wrap and solder we should have the magic dongle that makes it all happen.
This is all guessing based on what I can see on the video. Ordering what I need on ebay and going to give it a go. If success then I'll report with a how to. If someone beats me to it.... You suck lol. The challenge has been made so let's do this.

Here is the Voodoo.
By no means is this the first attempt at this. Alot of our cousins in the SG3 forum have been working at this for a while. There main issue is now kernel. Seems they have it all working. Our stock UI and kernels support this natively so no mods to make.
Little extra info on the 5pin and 11pin micro usb ports. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=39516285#post39516285 . Be sure to thank OP since he did a nice report.

So why make anotherone from scratch you ask?????
Well the Note II is a powerhouse. I want a true 11 pin connection from the Note II to the hub. Its perfectly doable but it looks like I may have to hack up a 11pin to HDMI dongle for the parts. Playtime will ensue as soon as parts arrive.

Hayyyyyyy necomer. You wouldn't happen to have the 11pin pinouts map by chance? Thanks for chimeing in and big thanks for pioneering the way.
I didn't get your question. Sorry...

A data sheet that identifies each pin in the 11 pin connection for the note 2
Download the electroDroid app from Google play. It has the pinouts for 11pin micro usb.
I hope this is what you mean.
sorry those are for USB 3.0
i found this in another thread;
Hopefully this may be of some help, I have also been trying to make one of these for the last few weeks.
So far, from purchasing this MHL - hdmi adapter, I have managed to map most of the pins, but am having difficulties getting USB OTG to work.
Charge, HDMI, and PC data connection work, but i still need to find the USB OTG pins for "smart dock" mode.
I assumed that this would work for USB OTG but it doesn't seem to work for me, it acts as USB Slave not Host (I.e. Connection to PC not HDD/Keyboard)
so far the pins i have identified:
(normal usb part)
Pin 1 - Vcc
Pin 2 - USB - (Slave)
Pin 3 - USB + (Slave)
Pin 4 - Sense (40.2K Ohm)
Pin 5 - Gnd
(extended USB Part)
Pin 6 - ? (Audio/USB host?)
Pin 7 - ? (Audio/USB host?)
Pin 8 - DP (MHL +)
Pin 9 - DN (MHL -)
Pin 10 - MHL ID (connected to ID Pin of MHL Adapter)
Pin 11 - Gnd
I will try and upload some images tomorrow, and a diagram of the plug.

That's exactly what I needed. Thanks very much.
I picked up various resistors per the table a few posts back. Gonna try other dock modes just for fun to

Seems pin 4 and 5 would be used for resistance checking
40.2k for smart dock
365k for desktop dock
619k for car dock
Would be kinda cool and geeky just to throw a toggle and bam car dock or smart dock.
Edit: Just thinking. I wonder if the pin # 10 has to be in play with MHL mode and the 40.2k resistor on 4 and 5 to throw it in to smart dock. Hrmmm mm
Mine work without any connection with pin 10. So most likely it is nt used to understand any mode. But Samsung might set something with those pin in smart dock. If anyone dare to explore smart dock, then we can know about that

Just waiting on the last few parts. The plan is to reproduce your mod. Then experiment with the other resistor values and post results. Hate waiting lol
Seems no matter how much I checked I still got a 5pin converted to HDMI and not a 11pin to HDMI. Waiting on second order Bleh.

[Q] HDMI port issue

Hi team,
I just bought an HDMI cable to connect by phone to the TV. The problem is that the cable just wont fit in to Note1. However, it works perfectly fine with Note 2.
I can use the same charger to charge my Note 1 and Note 2. But the HDMI cable port just wont fit inside Note 1 as if its not meant for it. I tried to push it but it refuses to connect.
AFAIK, HDMI cables are universal and can be used on any phones which supports this feature. I may be wrong.
Any ideas what is causing this issue?

Don't know how it looks on Note 2, but all Note 1 has is USB port into which fits only USB.
Sending screen to other devices is done with MHL converter, which has USB plug which goes to Note, USB port for external power and HDMI port for connecting to TV. I'm sure more info can be found in accessories forum.
PS. I have a vague feeling that questions should generally be posted in Q&A forum...

The man is bang on, there's no hdmi port on any phone AFAIK... Mhl ports vary pins on generation of phone, so the note2 matches the s3 and I think the s2 matches the note, but it usually states on the product page which models they fit.

Hi there, It looks like a Y shaped cable. One end goes into the phone (charger port) and on the other side, there are 2 wires (ports), one goes into the HDMI port on the TV and the other goes into the USB port on the TV. The USB port does the job of charging the phone simultaneously while the HDMI does the job of extending the screen from phone to TV. There is no MHL adapter. The cable does all the job.
On the package, it says for Galaxy S3 so I guess it will work only with S3 and Note 2. I need to buy one more which is compatible with S2 and Note1.
My only question is that since the charging port on Note1 and Note2 is similar, how come there is still a compatibility issue with Note1? I was under the impression that the cable/port would be standard for these Samsung android phones and if it fits into Note2, then why note on Note1?
That's called an mhl adapter. The port in the phone is micro usb, so the signal is converted to hdmi.

List of alternate usb chargers

Hi all,
I thought I'd share what I've found working as a USB charger for the Nook HD+.
1) USB 3.0 ports on a computer (slower charge at 900mA)
2) Powered USB 3.0 hub (slower charge at 900mA)
3) Philips SPS8038B Relocatable Power Tap (http://www.amazon.com/Philips-Office-Desktop-Charging-Station/dp/B00865TV2Y)
4) SPRINT CTC-2USB-5V2A car/home charger (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=9SIA20211P5919)
Please add if you have any other USB chargers that work!
Lenovo Miix 2 8 charger. Lenovo P/N 36200540, Model AD897F23 provides 5.2V/2.0A
Any USB charger with short-circuited D+/D- pins should work (standard now, except for Apple and maybe a few others). That's how the Nook HD+ recognizes a dedicated charger vs. a USB data connection. Only if the data pins are shorted will it go into fast charge mode (up to 2000 mA), otherwise it'll limit its current intake to 500 mA.

I got 2 usb chargers from Amazon with multiple ports & does work on the Nook HD+ for me.
1) iXCC ® Dual USB 4.2 Amp (20 Watt) SMART High Capacity [High Power] AC Travel Wall Charger - ChargeWise (tm) Technology [High Speed] FAST Charging for Apple iPhone 5s 5c 5; ipad air; iPad Air mini (Retina Display); iPad 4; ipad2; Samsung Galaxy S5 S4 S3; Note 2 and Note 3; the new HTC One (M8); Google Nexus and More [Black]. I got the Blue model.
2) Anker® 40W 5-Port Family-Sized Desktop USB Charger with PowerIQ™ Technology for iPhone 5s 5c 5; iPad Air mini; Galaxy S5 S4; Note 3 2; the new HTC One (M8); Nexus and More (White) May be overkill for some.
Found that the SIIg usb 2 amp charger won't work or get recognized by the Nook HD+; it's marketed as for the crapple's ipod/ipad. A signal of incompatibility is if it says for Apple products.
I had a Nook Color charger left after I moved up to an HD+ (a friend gave it to me with no charger), works great!
Charger for Samsung galaxy tab 3 t217a does work perfectly
And any lg charger (5.1V) works as well
The EasyAcc 5 port chargers work as well. The different ports each have different labels and specs. The 2x iPad and 1x iPhone ports won't charge the Nook HD. The Samsung Tab port charges the Nook HD at full speed (I have the 7 inch Nook HD). edit: I think the Android labelled port might charge full speed as well.
EasyAcc amazon US: http://www.amazon.com/EasyAcc®-Fami...words=EasyAcc+Multi+Port+USB+Portable+Charger
EasyAcc amazon UK: http://www.amazon.co.uk/EasyAcc®-Po...qid=1408740111&sr=1-1&keywords=EasyAcc+5-Port
How to (maybe) get it cheaper: EasyAcc has a UK/Europe ebay store. On ebay UK I put in a bid at about 80% of the normal retail price. I didn't win but when the auction ended EasyAcc contacted me (I think they contacted the five highest bidders who didn't win) and offered me the product at the price I bid.

Reason for Note 9 slow file transfer speed

Hello,
When doing file transfer from/to note 9 512gb using the stock usb-c cable i am getting usb2 speed of 20/30MBs. Also, the connected device list on my windows 10 laptop reports "galaxy note 9 could be faster if connected to usb 3". Well i tested it on multiple computers for sure having usb 3 ports and the result remains the same.
can people share what speeds are they getting and what does the device list on their computer show note 9 to be (usb 3 or usb 2).
Please share any fix to solve this.
thanks.

Sounds like your Note 9 is not performing as it should be, i’m getting mega fast transfer speeds, for example 19.7 gig file size, it will take around 2 mins to transfer if i got multiple files and folders..
Let’s say around 25 ish gig it will take around 7/8 ish mins
I’m on windows 10 64-bit, have you got smart switch installed on your laptop/desktop ? And have you got the Samsung USB driver installed ? install smart switch as it will install the correct driver for you!
I didn't think the standard USB cable, that came with the phone, is USB 3.0/3.1, only USB 2.
Maybe time to change the cable... the original ones of every model used even for charging don't last to long. Try another one to see if that's the problem.

Are you sure?
Because the NOTE8, Galaxy S8/S9 series all came with USB 2.0 cables.
And I can't see anything in the doc's that came with the phone, that it has a USB 3.0/3.1 cable, even though the phone itself supports USB 3.1 Gen 1.

Dude that would be so dumb if Samsung gave us an USB-2.0 cable with a USB 3 compliant phone! it's an USB 3.0 Cable that ships with the Note 9 (im guessing) and I’m sure i was getting the same speeds on the S8+ Mega fast transfers, i was useing the standard cable that came with the S8+!
is there anyway to check ?
i'll make a short video of my transfer speeds!

Searching for info.
Samsung does not state what USB standard the cable is.
But the lack of blue trim on the USB-A plug would suggest it's not a USB 3.0/3.1 cable.
The reason I suggested the NOTE9 supplied cable might only be USB 2.0, was for the above reason.
But also due to a thread I saw here on XDA (S9 or S9+) where it was noted that they came with a USB 2.0 cable, despite the phone supporting USB 3.1 Gen 1
And the supplied cable is definately anorexic
---------- Post added at 10:26 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:50 PM ----------
Whilst I still haven't found anything directly from Samsung, about the supplied cable with the Note9,
I did check the 15W travel charger kits, and they are using the exact same cable/plug as those that come with the phone.
And they DO state it's a USB 2.0 cable.
My S9+ and my friend's S8+ both came with USB 2.0 cables. I'm not sure about the Note 9 but I can ask my friend who has one. I don't see why they'd suddenly start shipping USB 3.0 cables for similarly specced devices.
I can also confirm that my note9 512gb came with USB2.0 type C cable.
How do i know this? because I have an original USB3.0 type C from my Axon 7 which I compared to with the cable provided with the note9.
If you inspect closely inside the USB-A plug, 2.0 only has 4 pins. While 3.0 has an additional 5 pins aside from the standard 4 pins.

Is there a 3.0 cable available
I have also had a frustrating time uploading photos from my S9 Note to PC. Assuming the main issue is the 2.0 cable; does Samsung offer a faster cable?

ive used a thunderbolt cable and transfering from and to internal storage is quite fast. do t use the charging cable supplied and try and get a hight quality cable.
Bro. I can assure you that Note 9 comes with Type c to USB 2.0 data cable. It has only 4 wire inside to transfer data and charge phone. Also if you look at the USB side you can clearly see it has only 4 pin it to connect with your USB port.
Purchase a new type c to USB 3.1 data cable and see the difference your self. Also make your your desktop / laptop has ssd for better data transfer speed.

LOL, you mean like Samsung providing a 25watt charger for the Note 10+ while it supports 45 watt charging?
Companies do this all the time, it saves them $$ to get you to buy another cable/charger ect...
Seriously, the manufacturers aren't out to help you, only their bottom line...

Just got my Note 10 + 5G today! Wow it's a beast only just got round to setting it up screen is gorgeous, Dude don’t Super Fast Charging damage the battery in the long run ? i have turned off fast charging i use a extra long usb cable like 3 meters long.. Then i plug in my USB C cable to charge my Note 9 take around 6/7+ hours to charge up the phone to 80/90% phone stays super cool.
I will be doing the same for Note 10 + super slow charge.. What’s the rush that you need your battery topped up so fast ? With power banks available you can charge on the move man!
if you’re looking to upgrade every 1/2 years yeah leave on fast charge but i still am using my Tab S 8.4 LTE as a daily driver had over 4300+ chargers dischargers just mange to get a new battery out of a broken Tab S 8.4 LTE so I’m getting good hard usage hours out of it again please note it's coming up to 4 or 5 years old
Also i'm planning to keep the Note 10 + for at least 4 years so fast charge i rather not use it.. Plus Samsung are assholes they will not sell you the battery..
But yeah i totally get where you coming from they all are copying ipoop so no true USB 3.0 cables or super fast chargers not bundled in with a £1100 phone witch is a joke!
It would be nice if there was some clarity on what cable to buy for fastest charging and data transfer.
The Note 9 USB cable is listed with a top speed transfer speed off 480 Mb/Sec. And a samsung tech rep told me it uses a USB 3.0 standard.
