I have been seeing posts recently of someone sending in their Nexus 5X for repairs, and getting more RAM in the phone. Hypothetically speaking, would it be possible to take the Samsung Galaxy s8's screen, and put it on the Nexus 6 ? How difficult would that be ?

Ram and emmc chips are one thing... The panel of s8 would require a whole new redo of kernel with drivers to support it. Not only that they don't match hardware and ribbon cable wise. Not only that Nexus 6 is very close to end of life so doubt anyone would even do it even if it were possible.

You know, of course, that "Senior Member" is a meaningless title since you only have to post 100 comments to "earn" it In any case, many people don't understand how the hardware works, they only barely know how to unlock the bootloader on a Nexus and flash TWRP and a custom ROM. By the time one would be done doing all the hardware and software modding he'd need to fit a Galaxy S8 screen on the Nexus it'd be more worthwhile to just get the S8

Let's put it this way: it'd actually be easier to get a Galaxy S8, learn from scratch (as in with zero coding experience) how to break Samsung’s Knox and related security features, forcibly bypass any bootloader locks present and port a custom recovery like TWRP than it would be to make a S8 display work on a Nexus 6
But it still comes in black right?

Would a Toyota Camry windshield fit on a Dodge Charger?
Hahaha......Okay okay......*face palm* I had a feeling this is the response I would get. Honestly, I have been a member of XDA for years. And as one of you already pointed out, I'm one of those "senior members" that has learned how to root, install a custom recovery and a few other things. I posted this, because I really have no idea how some hardware works on phones compared to computers. I have worked on laptops and desktops for years, and some of the hardware in laptops is interchangeable, and others, is not. But hey, at least I made a few of you laugh, right ?

Samsung likes to release so many variants of one device that even swapping a screen from one model(TMO) to a model(VRZ) may have a ribbon issue. I have always been partial to the _Samsung Round_ screen but, i am not THAT partial. I have gotten mics.,loud and ear speakers to "line up" and "fit" as a way of replacement or out of pure curiosity.

Is it possible to develop a version of CyanogenMod (either 9.1 or 10) for those of us who have locked bootloaders?
I have been watching the Xperia S and other Xperia phones forums and there are some threads about MIUI and CyanogenMod for locked bootloaders. It seems these versions work by removing the kernel so we the stock one is kept on the phone.
Anyone with a bit of knowledge who cares to explain? Feel free to chime in :fingers-crossed:

Mobile division is fairly separate from the PS3 division. After all, it was a joint venture between Sony and Ericsson until not too long ago.
Most if not all of the software/bootloader engineering is still done by teams in Sweden as far as I can tell.
An exploit might be found, but it is NOT going to be remotely as easy as the Verizon Samsungs. Both of those required either leaks from disgruntled employees or security design mistakes (or possibly sabotage) in the device.
One of the key things that led to the GN2 compromise was the fact that only one GN2 variant had a secure boot chain.
ALL Xperia Ts have a secure boot chain - the only thing that differs in unlockability is what serial numbers are whitelisted on Sony's servers that provide unlock codes.

True, while they are not allowed we still have other VS. threads in the N5 section that have not been closed so it looks like they are letting them stay.
I think they are great and don't understand the reason why XDA would lock them anyway. If people do not care about a certain phone vs. another don't read it. It is not like the titles are misleading like so many other worthless threads that get opened here.

I am in the market for a new phone, but couldn't decide between the Nexus 6 or the Note 4. I have the Note 3, which works kinda ok, but I really hate that it doesn't have NFC working (it's infamous for that).
After doing tons of research, I was going to go for the Nexus 6, but there seems to be a ridiculous bug that it has with NFC disappearing completely from the device, either at random, or when going over 43% storage capacity for the 64GB version. Unbelievably ridiculous.

At least the Note 4 doesn't have that kind of ridiculous issue with NFC, other than a wakelock, which is easily solved. So for this reason, I've made up my mind and will be going for a Note 4. Also, LP is just as unstable on the Nexus 6 as it is on CM, so I think I'll be in safe hands.
Does anyone have any hands on experience between Note 4 vs. Nexus 6 and can chime in?
Thanks!

Not one issue with the gps! I literally use it everyday and it locks quick.
That's great to hear. I myself use GPS daily, so it's a must that it be functioning properly. I mean, my Note 3 is not like my Nexus 4, which locked instantaneously EVERYWHERE, even inside in a basement, but it still works properly in that it never leads me astray and locks as soon as I need it to.
As long as the Note 4 is not any worse, that is all I ask.

Yes Pierre you are correct and I apologize for any confusion this has caused you or anyone else. I was on my morning patrol and found it closed in the General subforum. Reading it over it seemed like the OP basically wanted advice. So I made the decision as Team Leader to overrule the closing and reopen it in the Q&A section. It is my bad that I did not post a reopening statement...I should have. In the past we have indeed closed device comparison threads and you know I myself have created sticky threads for those discussions. As with all things, we as a website evolve (thankfully we evolved passed Iron Fist eh?) and it was decided that comparison threads, if they stay within the rules and do not turn into the fanboy threads, would be allowed...now that does not include iPhones...ever! LOL...this started as an experiment a few months ago and seems to be working OK...members are behaving. Some of the mods here are used to the sticky threads I had made and it was a reflex to close this in General section...and really should just have been moved to Q&A. Hope this clears everything up. Again...apologies.

Thanks for clearing that up kenny. As for the OP, i do tend to have some gps locking issues once in a while with the note 4. Its few and far between but they do happen. However im going to go out on a limb and say that most phones will have gps locking issues every so often. I know i have them on both my nexus and samsung devices. Overall i think the note 4 is the better phone.
Yes, I myself was completely taken aback and surprised that this thread was closed. It was never even crossed my mind to introduce any "fanboyism", or for one to bash the other. As a matter of fact, I was very happy to have created this thread, because I was getting some great feedback, and also may have inadvertently helped Nexus 6 owners become aware of an issue with NFC, as I myself had no idea it was an issue...and then suddenly the thread was closed.
Either way, I'm glad that this thread was reopened. I was very, very close to getting a Note 4 yesterday evening, but lost out on the deal! :crying: I'm definitely grabbing one very shortly though.
To be honest, while both great devices, I'd go with the nexus 6. I've used both, the nexus 6 is faster, especially with 5.1.0, and the cameras aren't all that much different. Google gives better gives better support in my opinion. And I noticed you talking about the note 3 having the best audio on any phone you've heard? The front facing speaker phones are most often better.
According to my search on this forum, it's been at least two months since root of Galaxy S6 Active was mentioned last, so I thought I'll try again...
I am trying to figure out if there is a way to root the phone now? I tried KingoRoot, Towel Root, PingPong, King and nothing worked...
Would the phone get bricked if I try the rooting via Odin using the files for the regular S6 (G920)?
Is it possible to just flash CyanogenMod and thus get both the rom and root that way?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Yet another thing that confuses me....why is the edge and active so different from the normal 6. Why would there be any reason for the internals to be changed besides maybe moving some stuff around so it fits right. I am so happy I decided not to get the active even though I learned today that it has 1000 more mAh than the normal/edge which if I would've known that at purchase I would of gotten it... I feel your pain guys. It is even worse that it is an ATT Active of all things, :/
Agree! Android really is different without root.
I have had my G890A (S6 Active) for just over a month.
This is the longest I've ever had a non-rooted Android phone since my first HTC many years back. It's frustrating!
The phone's nice. It's got the bigger battery, a bit tougher, and not too large (but I *am* tired of "demo'ing" the phone-in-a -glass-of-water trick for friends already .
I like the promise of durability, but chaff at lack of root, and the personal tweaks that I took for granted on my S4, my S2 and other rooted android phones. . .

Not if you're a developer. For example, in my app, I need to turn on hotspot programmatically, but since srtWifiEnabled method is private, even with reflection, it need privileged permissions, i.e., root. Even Tasker fails to toggle hotspot due to this. Only root can fix this.

Development for all US models has almost stopped. Other than adaway and a couple of other things that require root, what more do you need root for?

Exactly. There isn't much you need root for nowadays.

Not if you're a developer. For example, in my app, I need to turn on hotspot programmatically, but since srtWifiEnabled method is private, even with reflection, it need privileged permissions, i.e., root. Even Tasker fails to toggle hotspot due to this. Only root can fix this.

I have had galaxy s8 plus , 7 and 4 and 5. i rooted them all ! samfail rooted s8 plus ! so i don't understand why people keep saying you can't root snap dragon. i think the only one that isn't rootable at all is the s9 plus ? right ? cause i rooted every single S i had.

I was fine with the 80 percent, with all the tweaks and bloatware you can remove it's pretty good with just 80 percent. i mean it's basically at 100 but says it's 80. BTW google pixel is done lolol they don't even have a headphone jack.
Everyone said the Note8 wouldn't be rooted and that happened rather quickly. I wouldn't hold my breath, but it's possible.
