SM-N9208 Custom Kernel Nougat - Galaxy Note5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Any Developer can make custom kernel for SM-N9208 Nougat to fix deep sleep ?

Samsung has yet to release their kernel source. Unless I'm otherwise mistaken.
I've had no problem with deep sleep with greenify set to adhesive doze. Additionally, HEBF with Extreme battery mode helps. I also just WIFI automatic to turn wifi off when the screen goes off, because it doesn't work too well in Android and sucks the battery.

I had this issue too.
If (and only if) you're rooted and know how to use it... try setCPU. Recommended settings and ondemand + set on boot.. gonna try this for a few days and post the results

I had that problem initially and I *think* it was related to having WiFi enabled even while the phone was supposed to be asleep. Have a look at this thread for a few ideas which may (or may not) help....

Sorr to double my post, but...
So, I found the problem.
This is kernel wakelock, wlan_rx_wake.
Many people also suffered from this problem on Nexus.
The issue directly related to Dynamic IP/DHCP on your network. Due to kernel fault, wi-fi module can'to go into deep sleep, and therefore drains the battery. Not much, but about 2-3% per hour.
Goddamn Samsung devs.
So

Try the instructions below, fixed my deep sleep problem(thanks to Mister Jozo)
0.go to settings > sound and turn off touch sounds and screen lock sounds
These steps stop the kernel wakelock 100% problem:
1.turn on aeroplane mode
2.turn off device
3.take out battery for 10 seconds
4.turn on device
5.wait for everything to load
6.turn off aeroplane mode

Not for me. Those are steps for fixing audio_output wakelock, not wi-fi.

Hmmm i dont have any kernel wakelock, deep sleep works how it should. Maybe you have installed any app which gives that wakelock

I don't know...very same set of apps, as it was on lp5 and lp6 repacks, and there the battery life was significantly better, than now. There is deep sleep, just in "kernel-wakelock" I'm seeing this wi-fi issue. And it not happens on mobile network.

that worked perfectly for me!!! Many thanks!!!
Left my WiFi and Latitude/Maps running and apps and FB updating over night..
100% charge.
7 hours 38Min 85% remaining
Running odex stock rooted German LPY ROM. Flashed from mobile Odin Pro with injected SU and everrott and ALL wipes checked.
By some standards this may be poor. I am extremely happy with these results given I run everything all the time. I usually am charging every night. I decided to leave it off charge last night to see if I had excessive drain.

Just to understand - were you on cf-root kernel or stock kernel, rooted in another way?

the solution posted by OP worked for me thanks!!
I seem to have a problem with the calendar storage... whatever that means. Restarting, taking battery out etc. didn't help. And the problem is that the phone is getting hot too. Any suggestions please?

I seem to have a problem with the alarm amanger not letting mine go into deep sleep.
3545 wakelocks over a 2 hour period!!!
I have 2 daily alarms set in the stock clock.
Surely this shouldn't be preventing the phone from sleeping?
Or is it related to some other app?
Well one of the things i've noticed is that while charging my phone never goes to deep sleep, it remains on 200mHz. If i take it off the charger it will go to deep sleep.
I've read about a similar problem with the original samsung car holder /charger. As it seems while charging in landscape mode and receiving a call gives a problem. Without the charger all seems to be fine.
In my opinion i think it's rom related (wow, did figure it out myself) but i think it's also related with the usb port. Try it and you will see....
Hope this helps someone.

Issues With DEEP SLEEP
Hi everyone,
Only got one problem, the phone wont go into deep sleep mode. its stuck at the the lowest frquency with screen off. i'll explain further. when i first clean flashed the rom, eveything was good and it slept like a baby, then i went into performance settings and omni settings, i changed the governor to elementalX ( checked the apply at boot option ) once i restarted my phone, it would not go into deep sleep mode again..this isnt just this rom, its with every AOSP rom that i am testing out. Any insight, please do share.
The rom i was on when i wrote the above statememt was CM-REMIX
Thanks for the Help.
PS: i did look into wakelocks, and it seems that *alarm* in the android system seems to be the culprit.
Anyone??
if anyone else is having this issue, i've found a somewhat solution. Seems that when you diable NFC and restart your phone it wont go into deep sleep, but when you enable it and restart the phone, the deep sleep function works great...
i find it odd why i cannot diable nfc without loosing deep sleep functionality
Cm based ROMs are still not completely stable. I have experienced random battery drain and lack of deep sleep on a few builds of many different AOSP ROMs. They are still in Alpha or Beta for the most part. Give them some time they will get all of the kinks worked out.

I hope they do because i love the minimalistic approach of AOSP...
Whats CM rom are you using? how about battery life?
The only one to tell why ur phone won't deep sleep is you. Have to do homework yourself. Wake lock detector, better battery stats, those are good apps to start with then u will see what is going on.

How can I fix this battery drain?

According to BBS, https://m.imgur.com/gbpwAIy,ARaAKEw,YhEGL7w,8rCXPAf,ekGOuPM
Android has a very high alarm count, and it's also partially preventing my phone from entering deep sleep. I somehow forgot to provide a screenshot of bbs's main screen, but IIRC it was awake 27% of the time and deep sleeping the rest. I'd absolutly love to achieve the 0.0%/hr. drain. Plus, I don't use gapps. I also have few xposed modules for battery saving, but I'd really love to fix these. I tried doing a ddg (and google) search on the alarms from Android, especially PKT_CNT_SAMPLE_INTERVAL_ELAPSED, but no luck. Other than that, I have absolutly 0 partial wakelocks and I, obviously, have a few kernel wakelocks. Without any kernel wakelocks, the device wouldn't even work, but even then, the kernel wakelocks barley even exist. I'm currently running minimal os 5.1.1 with the v13 monster kernel. Thank you in advance.
I have a similar problem in stock rom (http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/help/android-os-wakelock-hell-t3390342)
A question:
Do you use "Ambient display" (screen wakes up when you get a notification)?

No I don't. I've had it in several different roms.

Revert back to stock rom and update to marshmallow, from this you will be able to get deep sleep mode easily and the rom will be much stable. then for any customization use xposed framework. also use greenify app in boost mode you will get maximum out of your android. cheers.

How does phone go into deep sleep with AOD on?

Hello everyone, I'm an S5 user but am wondering how can the Note 8 (and any phone with AOD by default in that matter) enter deep sleep mode (Doze as well) while the Always-On Display is nonstop active? I mean, the custom ROMs for my device have fully working AOD but the phone stays at the minimum frequency (300MHZ) and never goes to sleep while AOD is on. I'm just curious how it's done and if it would be possible to port for the S5. I'm no developer btw, just a curious guy Please quote this post if you decide to reply as I don't visit these forums as I got no Note 8 Thanks.

Bump agreed good question. Although I don't use Aod scared of screen burn in.
Don't know about infinity display, I don't like it but the usual AOD bounces the time around occasionally to prevent burnin
Yeah it bounce across the screen in order to not burn it. Also the home button do it (see any time lapse from youtube, it move slowly)

I don't think it's the phone that goes to sleep, I think it puts the apps to sleep. I came up with this thought after I noticed that my cooperate exchange email only updates successfully when the screen is on. There is a scan window for network traffic enabled by android's Doze feature though. So at that window, all network data transmissions are done.
It could be like I said all apps sleep that aren't actively needed. In my case, AOD and GMusic stay running for me.

Hm, in my case (ported ROM) the device just never enters 'deep sleep' state as seen in CPU Spy, can you check if while AOD is active your Note 8 goes into deep sleep?

Yeah I'll give it a look. I'm not rooted so I may not get accurate readings.
There's mine. I'm on my phone all day for work but it sleeps while I drive between hospitals.

Total state time: 60 hours and still got like 70-80% battery left xd (I want new phone :c, nah, not really, I got IR and removable battery now )
Well seems like it does enter deep sleep. Guess I'll have to either turn my AOD off until ROM dev fixes this or until I get the Note 10 (maybe), thanks!

Ah, yeah. Confused it with Wakelock Detector a bit

Battery drain is too high - what rom/kernel should I use?

I've been running Nitrogen Oreo for months with Elemental Kernel, I am also on Project Fi. Recently I've noticed my phone wont go into deep sleep and EX reports idle battery drain is ~8% / hour which is way too high.
I don't run any mods etc. My battery health is also good. Should I try another rom/kernel and if so which one. I was thinking of the new Pie roms but I don't think they are fully stable yet esp for things like wifi calling which I depend on.
Usually, it's an app or some special rom setting keeping the phone awake. If you can find out what, it's usually simple to fix.
Sometimes, the stats in settings->battery will tell you what is using the power. Or try app betterbatterystats.
If you can't locate the problem, then an app like greenify may help by forcing the badly behaving app to sleep. Or clean flash without restoring all your current apps.
And yes, stay away from pie if you need WiFi calling.
