Camera Diagnostics/Checking for physical problems

Is there a resource somewhere that I can use to troubleshoot a potentially busted camera?
Using the stock firmware (RC29), on a fresh install, the camera and gallery apps crash with "Activity Camera (in application Camera) is not responding", with only an option to force close. 3 out of 4 times, the device reboots when I click FC.
I've also used Cyanogen (4.2.15.1) and SuperD (1.10.3), and in both cases, the camera app crashes with "The application Camera (process com.android.camera) has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." Force close doesn't result in a reboot, though. Also, in these cases, the gallery works fine (I've uploaded some photos, and am able to view them without a problem).
In searching for solutions, I saw some suggestions to replace the existing Camera.apk with the original google one. I did give that a go, using 3 different versions -- one from JF 1.5, the one from DRC83_Defanged, and Cyanogen's (the current firmware I'm using). Both Cyanogen's and the DRC83 apks instantly crashed (process com.android.camera FC error).
On the other hand, the one from JF's package loaded, and had the camera icon appear in the top right corner of the screen, as if it could take a picture. The screen was completely black, though. Pushing the camera icon generated the FC error.
I haven't done any log checking while swapping out the different apks, but previously, the error log matched the problem occurring with "Issue 1037" on Cyanogen's google code page. (tried to link to it, but I haven't had the restriction removed yet.)
Are there any diagnostic tools or tricks that I can use to see if the camera itself is broken? I also have no problem physically cracking my G1 open -- I've already replaced the ribbon cable. I also double-checked that the camera ribbon was seated properly...it's a nasty one to get back in with my vision problems
Thanks in advance,
Nate

Camera + Email Problem

I have the latest updates from samsung, and a rooted tab. Recently the camera stopped working. I could open it, but when I clicked on any of the settings, it showed I was touching them, but didn't bring up any menus, the preview screen is completely black, but camera apps from the marked DO work... I'm assuming something happened to my camera.apk?
Also, when I try and attach a file using the email app, I click "attach file" and it saves an email draft then nothing else happens... is it because I uninstalled the thinkfree.apk?
I've read that the camera and email are related... so perhaps that is where my problem lies?
Also, how can I install the camera.apk? I got a backup of it but after uninstalling the old one, I just get "install failed" or whatever...
Thanks!!!
Try a factory reset. Settings, Privacy, factory reset (wipes user data). If it doesnt work. Search this forum it has email app somewhere.
I was hoping to avoid that... oh well. thanks

Camera app disappearing each reboot?

Okay guys so earlier today I tried to take a picture with my razr i but the camera button wasn´t working so I decided to enter from the launcher. I couldn´t find the camera icon (Im using a custom launcher but it is not in the hidden apps). Used pixlr express to take the picture and it reads "No camera application found. Your camera may be disabled". I checked and the camera is NOT disabled.
I had been using this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206206 for a few months without any problems so I had a backup from MotCamera.apk and MotCamera.odex and if I move them to /system/app I can use it, but when I reboot it dissapears again!
any help would be appreciated thanks in advance

Facebook messenger in-app camera not working

Hi,
Trying to use facebook in-app camera, gives a white screen. If you read very carefully, you can see that it displays a message: "sorry, the camera is not working right now . you mightneed to close any other camera apps you have running" . Turning your screen off, and immediately on again, the camera works like a charm. No other apps seem te have problems accessing the camera. All permissions are OK. Facebook app itselve works great, and starts the camera from the first time. So the problem seems to be isolated to the FB messenger app. Installing older versions to no avail... uninstalling other applications using camera... no avail.
Any thoughts?

Incredible stock camera lag

Hello, when I updated from 10.3.3 to 11.0.3, the official camera app of the phone is in incredibly laggy. When I take a photo, I often have to close and reopen it, because it stucks. I performed a clean update and I tried to reset the app many times. What I could do?
I have the same problem. In stock cam, the "vídeo" wont works, just work when I restart. You have found any solution?
Hi, I have a problem with the native camera app version 3.0.
Sometimes "corrupt" pictures appear in the camera folder when I want to paste into WhatsApp. They just appear as a gray icon with an exclamation mark and when I select it I get the message: "This file format is not supported". Other images are previewed, but they cannot be inserted too.
When I open the camera folder with a file manager, these images are not displayed. I suspect that it happens when I delete some pictures in the camera app.
Best regards
Manfred
