With the amazing work by @Chainfire we are blessed with a what seems to be almost perfect replacement for SafeStrap. Yes, this is still in Beta and you should go into this expecting to soft brick your phone every time when flashing something with this. That's why we need some brave souls to test the limits of FlashFire for our poor device.

Notes:
If your device stays at the black screen when you try to flash something simply pull the battery out. Then, boot into recovery and wipe the cache partitions. That should allow you to boot your device again after failure.
If you find yourself in a boot loop and downgrading back to NCE you can restore your 5.0 backup while on 4.4.2 (if you made one like you should have) by following my tutorial in the following link. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=60095108&postcount=21

Here is what I know so far about FlashFire's capabilities on locked bootloader devices:
- Will run on Android v4.x.x/5.0.x.
- Will not trip your Knox Warranty Flag.
- Will flash ROM's (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- No AROMA installer ROM's.
- Caution! FF flashes to the boot partition, i.e. flashing custom kernels will result in soft brick!
- You can drop a Full Odin .tar or .zip file containing the raw images onto your device and it will flash system, kernel, cache, and recovery (will not flash modem, non-hlos, or bootloader) (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can flash the remaining partitions via a .zip at the same time or via your PC using Odin.
- Flashes .tars with unsigned images, e.g. system.img.ext4, modem.bin. (use "flash firmware package" option).
- You can also flash individual (un-.tar'd) images, e.g. recovery.img, boot.img.
- Flashes .zip files, e.g. mod's, SuperSu Update.zips, etc (use "flash .zip or ota" option).
- Makes Backups of and Restores all partitions.
- Wipes partitions.
- Injects Root.
I will add here as I test and learn more.
Also want to add a note of caution....if you are a noob and don't have much experience with these things don't rush in. Best to sit back until safe and responsible guides are created. I for one am not at all sympathetic to those that don't take the time to read and understand before jumping in.

One of my questions about FlashFire is will it work on encrypted phones? My work phone is Verizon GS5 and SafeStrap would not work because of my encryption, so I'd be very interested in updating that phone without losing root if it will work. Thanks for all your work!

I attempted to flash Alliance ROM 7.1 from the International Forums.
My Steps:
1. Downgrade to NCE
2. Root
3. SuperSU
4. Install FlashFire
5. Set up FlashFire in the following order;
- Wipe
- Flash Partitions and Bootloader
- Flash Alliance ROM
Everything looked to be working perfectly, but it was getting stuck on the second boot screen. Going to try it again, but after I finish installing Stock Rooted 5.0 again. Maybe it will work then. Only one way to figure out.

Great thread. I'll have a deodexed build up in the next few days then start adding mods and working on other things

Going to try as a firmware package
When I tried to flash as a zip in FlashFire all it did was wipe my device then once it tried to insall the ROM it stopped then rebooted.

Tried to flash Allience in zip/ota and after it wipes it says that it is installing the .zip file for a second then it stops and reboots. Could this be a bug from FlashFire or the ROM not compatible?
Maybe try a dirty flash of the ROM?

I grab a stock ROM directly from G900F, make G900A boot.img and system.img.ext4 into tar.md5. Flash as package in FireFlash along with G900A_OC4_Stock_Partitions_wOA1_BL.zip. Works out pretty well. Just need to disable KNOX with Titanium Backup (for some reason SuperSU doesn't detect KNOX being present) and use Root Explorer to get csc through.
However haven't figured out how to enable VoLTE yet.

I tried the dirty flash. Just stuck at black screen. I let it sit for 25 min then did a battery pull. Rom did not install. I'll leave it alone tonight before i have to stay up all night fixing a soft brick. Haha.

Do you have SQLite Editor? Maybe VoLTE can be implemented though it.

@Nyxerosoir It's not that the option that is not there. It is just I am not able to enable it (grayed out) or it says "VoLTE is not supported by your current software version. Contact customer service for more details." if I try to enable it on quick settings.

A general principle to keep in mind is when flashing ROM's at the very least the kernel needs to match the system, i.e. 5.0 system requires the G900A Stock 5.0 kernel, 4.x system requires the G900A Stock 4.x kernel. The matching G900A Stock non-hlos will likely also be required in order for the ROM to work correctly.

I finally managed to get the font package by @nitol to work. The first time I ended up with a bootloop, but then I tried wiping dalvik and cache and flashing. Worked like a charm! Updated it in the OP for the index.

Can i upgrade from custom 4.4.2 to stock 5.0 via flashfire without needing a pc odin to flash bootloader and modem ? (I have G900F so unlocked bootloader)

Yes, follow @muniz_ri's guide and you can successfully upgrade from 4.4.2 to 5.0 without a PC.

[Q] Newbie Questions Part 2

Hi I am back with new questions.
I was able to unlock and root my M7 using the video guide here.
These are the things I have done so far with the help of this great forum.
1. Unlock
2. Root
3. Flash CWM Recovery
My next question is, what is the best (in your opinion) Custom ROM available with Sense 7? By best I mean to say less or no bugs at all or no issues.
Can I flash all kinds of ROMS using CWM Recovery?
Is it easy to flash new ROMS? Please share your knowledge or link me to a good guide on how I go about with flashing new ROM using CWM.

First of all, rom recommendations are against the rules, so have a look through each sense 7 rom that your interested in and see what features it comes with and which to try to best suit your needs, each op has instructions on how to flash etc.
sense roms will require the latest twrp recovery not cwm, that's something you'll have to change, you'll have all sorts of problems, like boot loops flashing with cwm.
a backup in recovery of your current rom is highly recommended first incase you need to revert.
flashing a custom rom is as easy as downloading the rom.zip, copy to your internal storage, reboot to recovery, factory reset and / or wipe, except internal storage, and then install the rom, follow the on screen instructions during the installer, and don't forget, first boot can take upto 10 to 15 mins.

Btw, on the topic with changing the recovery, do I just flash it directly? Please enlighten me so I can install TWRP instead of CWM.

Also, just to add, I usually read the last few pages of any rom I'm interested in to see what problems user's are currently experiencing with the latest version of that rom.

To flash twrp recovery, you'll need to know how to use adb and fastboot commands, then just download the latest version from here http://dl.twrp.me/m7/ this is assuming you have the normal GSM HTC One M7_UL
Put it in the same folder as adb and fastboot files on your computer and then reboot your phone to the bootloader.
Plug your phone into the computer and then issue the commands.
fastboot flash recovery name-of-recovery-file.img
fastboot erase cache
fastboot reboot-boootloader
You now have twrp recovery.

Flash CF auto root with custom recoveries(like TWRP above), download from here
XPOSED FRAMEWORK:
Flash from here with custom recoveries, then install Xposed app to control the modules.
KERNEL:
Flash with Odin
PERMISSIVE KERNEL for normal T815 devices, here.
PERMISSIVE KERNEL for Chinese T815c devices, here.

if I want to use the linked "ROM: Original stock ROM, UNROOT and UNMODIFIED." on my rooted, TWRP recovery 815 device , I will have to unroot my device also have to install stock recovery beforehand, am I right? Because if I try to install it via Odin it will brick my Tab S2.
I am asking it, because it was more than half a year since I updated my Tab S2, because it has stock ROM on it, with TWRP and root and I didn't wanted to deal with everything before update (unroot, stock recovery, ROM install via odin, twrp install again, root again etc.), since there is not stock update that I could istall via TWRP unfortunately.
My other question is what is Chinese special version ROM(T815c)? Why is it special? I am European so I don't speak Chinese either, not to mention my device is the basic 815, not 815c.

Hi, if you want to update your system to the latest version, I'm afraid in most of the cases you'll need to unroot at least unless your supersu has a recover OTA option in it, otherwise if you want to flash ROMs that I listed or other ROMs need to be flashed with Odin, you'll need to clear all the data in your device and flash, of course you can directly flash it without any wipe, but possibly something will go wrong. In your case if you only want to upgrade your system, you can find other ROMs here in xda and flash it with recovery, but even if you use recovery, there's no guarantee that nothing will go wrong without wiping anything. My suggestion is to backup your data first, and maybe find a recovery update package and directly flash it with recovery, no need to unroot or wipe other than Cache, but in case anything went wrong, you can use ROMs provided here and flash them with Odin to recovery your device, of course, if something went wrong, you'll have to wipe everything to do that.
About the Chinese version, if you don't use the T815c version, thedn you don't need to care about that, it's for Chinese buyers who bought the Chinese version.

Actually what you should do is to wipe all the data in the phone and then flash the ROM, no need to unroot or flash recovery separately, wipe can do all that for you, of course if you don't want to wipe all the data, you can try and directly flash the ROM(it's risky but sometimes it also works perfectly), then if something went wrong, you can wipe the data and flash again to recover.

I did not know it should be that simple, I owned a HTC, LG and Huawei phones but in all of them I have to unroot and install the stock recovery.
Oh, ok. I should do a full Wipe with Odin? I know there's an opinion in TWRP too.

stock kernel for LOS 14.1?

Hi! Currently running LOS 14.1 with Boeffla kernel, but I need to flash the stock one. Any ideas where to can find it?

Just flash rom.zip again on top of the current installation.
Or extract the boot.img from rom.zip, put it in a flashable zip and install it via twrp.

Will this overwrite only the system files? (I don't want to set up the phone from start... )

No if you just flash it on top of the current system, without any wipes or resets, all settings and datas should be still there.

Switching from one rom to another with a so called dirty flash?
I would say: its not only not recommended :good:
You can try a dirty flash with a version update of the same rom, but all other would most likely end in problems. And latest than you will have do to a clean flash anyways. I would suggest you read the thread of your preferred rom(s) in advance and carefully (at least the last several pages) and than decide what and how you will flash.

General Flash / Rooting Question S10e (970F)

Hi guys
Hope you are well, just wanted to find out, i rooted my phone using the patching method (Magisk). Thereafter i installed TWRP (Placing TWRP / VBMETA file in one archive) Flashed it, and it worked, i was able to log into recovery, i then formatted data, rebooted and wiped Dalvik etc etc. (Note i did not install the Multidisabler (The instructions i followed did not mention anything about it) I then installed LOS with GAPPS,
I know would like to try and either install Beyond ROM, or if need be back to complete stock (CTF3) as im missing DEX.
Can i just log back into TWRP - WIPE and installed Beyond ROM? (As we used to do in the old days - jumping between ROMS) Or should reflash MAGISK TWRP process everytime? If this is the case i would want to rather move back to stock...
Can i just flash back in ODIN and all will be good? Or is there any risks? (Ie in bricking the device etc)
