1.install CWM u can see Napstar thread in dev forum on how
2.after getting the CWM u can go to recovery and backup ur rom and install it any time u want
3. u can search in the dev forum for the original stock rom for ur country and keep it and flash it via sutl for warranty purposes as u cannot use the CWM restored rom for warranty purpose pls do search and read in the dev forum u can start from

please see attached picture.
i have been using a dft bootloader and a the first release of mango and would like to update to the latest version. there is a lot of information on this site but dont know where to start. i am scared of bricking my phone. if it is possible that someone can point me in the right direction so i know where to start. any input is appriciated.

going by the pic u put up, ur phone allready has custom rom installed.
just download the rom u want and flash

its an indian version phone n here r d details

Phone - i9000ddjv7
Csc - i9000ddjvb
Firmware version - 2.3.6
Baseband version - i9000ddjv7
Kernal version - [email protected]#2
Built num - gingerbread.ddjvb
Pls help me n pls provide me step by step instructions and links to download as am new n wanna root my handset and flash JB.
I got bored of 2.3.6 from past 2 years.
I heard only xda are the best in supporting this kind of issues. I am expecting a quick response.

and for cm....juz search cyanogenmod on google or go to dev section. but MAKE SURE TO BACKUP UR EFS FOLDER INSIDE PHONE MEMORY... no....i probably wrong......BACKUP DA ENTIRE PHONE MEMORY..... COPY N PASTE EVERYTHING INSIDE UR PC AND BURY IT IN FRONT OF UR HOUSE

You only have to read it. If you do not understand, it's maybe better not to root ...

I think that is necessary is to use what is the device that matches the specifications in terms of the version number and Krenel and Build Number
necessary to root it cuz its was necessary in S2
