Alcatel Idol 4S Battery Drain - Alcatel Idol 4S Questions & Answers

My Alcatel Idol 4S Windows 10 seems to lose charge. Yesterday, after fully charging around 4:00 PM, I let the phone sit, completely unused, till this morning. It was turned off with LTE enabled...nothing else on, and most everything set not to run in background. I also have set the phone not to sync automatically. Now at 9:00 it is at 94%. When I browse or use YouTube it really drains quickly. I have done a factory reset. Any thoughts?
Once the phone went down to 10% and powered down. Afterwards it charged normally. Any thoughts? Thanks.
Update: A 20 minute call drained the phone by 4%

Update 2 I went back in and made sure that absolutely nothing is working in background. I wish another Windows owner could give me a sense of what kind of battery usage/drainage is normal for this phone. I amcoming from a Lumia 521 which drains slowly. I'm reluctant to return this to T-Mobile and wind up with a refurb.

Last night I charged the phone to 100%, turned everything off...phone in airplane mode, so no cellular drain. This morning phone at 95% with nothing running and nothing in background. Surely someone on this forum must have insight into this.

5% battery drain overnight seems about par for the course, no? Means your phone untouched would stay on for 6.6 days in standby mode if my math is right.

is that par for the course? Some people seem to lose no or 1% charge when in standby overnight (everything off). How much charge do you lose when you make a 20 minute call, or play a youtube, or when your phone is not in use, but is connected to cellular with bluetooth on?
Thanks for your response

Send it to Alcatel for a battery replacement. You will get the same phone back that you sent in. I just did, and my battery life issues are much better.
The simple fact that your phone shuts of at 10% means that you need a new battery. It will get worse.

Calibrate my battery

Which is the best style to calibrate my battery? I't only lasts for 10h.
10 hrs is pretty good
i only get 4 hours under heavy use
I forget which thread it was but it said to completely discharge until the phone switches off (ignore please plug in prompts) and completely charge it back up 5 times. It worked wonders on mine
4 hours? pah, i can kill mine in under an hour lol
seriously though, it all depends on usage and how much you have running on the phone (big widgets and social feeds for instance), screen brightness also has a big impact.
On average i get a day out of mine but my mums boyfriend, with the same phone uses it far less and has had 3 days from his on one charge
Ok i'll try your method. Thanks guys!
I have mine going down to 79% within half a day, only standby and frequent switching on of the screen, is it normal? Thanks!

So you mean discharge completely and recharge completely and repeat this 5 times?
What about the following method :

Just wanted to share that I got an improvement
after recalibrating the batery,
Basically just charge full with phone on
then turn off, charge, turn on, turn off, charge.
I advice this for those who have flashed the firmware..

So which one of these two methods is the right way to do it?
EDIT: And how good is this guide?
1. Run the device down until it turns itself off.
2. Turn it back on and wait for it to turn itself off again.
3. Remove the battery for 10 seconds.
4. Replace the battery, but leave the device off.
5. Charge the device until full and then for another hour.
6. Boot into recovery and reset battery stats (or, go to console and type “su” enter, followed by “rm /data/system/batterystats.bin”)
7. Run the device’s battery down until it turns itself off.
8. Charge to full while off.
9. Restart and use as normal.

IMHO, the battery stat is just pure witch doctor style..
Id recommend you use the phone till it drops down the 2% then power it off and charge it while its off.. that way it MAY take upto 4-5hrs charging when it says its full remove the battery for 1-2mins then install it again and charge it while unplugged its gonna charge for ~5mins and when its full disconnect the charger and power on the phone.. you just need to do this once ( on my experience ) and charge as often as possible since its not a good idea to keep draining lithium batteries

Do it this way:
Make the phone empty.
Charge it all night (8 hours + ).
While still charging, open applictaion: Terminal Emulator (it is available on the market for free)
Write:

rm /data/system/batterystats.bin
it looks like that nothing really happens, but it does.
Reboote the phone. Important!
You will see the difference. I get from 1 day before to 3 days now.
For doing this, your phone, of course, should be rooted.

There's another method^^
I really don't know which one of the 4 battery calibration methods that I've mentioned above I should use?
I've read from many sources to not worry about frequent discharging/charging of your battery. The lithium-ion batteries we have in our phone will degrade based on cycles (when a certain number of charge cycles have been reached). As for overcharging, the phone is smart enough to stop charging once the battery is at 100%. The battery will slowly discharge, and once it hits a certain point between 93-98% it will start charging again.
As for which method works the best...I'm struggling with the same issue. Personally I've tried almost every method other than the reset battery stat (which I plan to do as a last resort).
I have found that the battery gets better after a few weeks of use. The full discharging/charging does help marginally. The turning on and off method of charging also helps marginally. The biggest culprit is usually background apps preventing your phone from properly sleeping or activating your data when your phone is locked. I was using juice defender and my battery still drained crazy. I JUST changed my juice defender to turn on data for 2 mins every 30 mins (as opposed to 1 every 15) and it seems to have made my battery better. Before I did this, my phone drained 40% in 6-7 hours (while i was sleeping). Right now... my phone has been active for 5h48min and is at 72% (a bit of texting, a bit of 3g, and wifi). Here's hoping it'll get better.
This thread helped a lot
My phone drained 70% of battery from 5am till 12pm (while I was asleep). When I saw the battery usage stats it said that Android OS draind 68% of the battery. I flashed the phone on sunday. I should do a calibration then, right?
I'm going to try this method:

[Q] Battery drain issue?

Hey everyone,
I'm not sure if I have an issue with a defective Captivate or if it running as intended. That's why I've come to you guys for some insight.
Here's my scenario:
A few days ago, I decided to leave my Captivate off of the charger overnight to see how much battery I would awaken with. It was just a little experiment I thought of to see how much the battery drains while not having anything intensive to do (such as power a screen). I fully charged the Captivate to 100% before setting it on my desk and going to bed. As normally, everything was turned off except wi-fi. When I awoken the next day (8 hours of sleeping), to my surprise, my battery was down to 27%. I was shocked that something could have drained almost 70% of my battery overnight. I downloaded an app called Spare Parts as a recommendation by some people and I seen "Running 100%" which means that the phone spent no time sleeping. When I look at any partial wakelocks, it showed "Android System" as a full bar. I assume that it could be a bad app that was keeping my phone from sleeping.
I restarted the phone, battery pulled, charged up and uninstalled some apps. Everything seemed back to normal as when I checked the the running %, it was proportionate to how often I was using the phone (not at 100%). I specifically checked if the phone was sleeping and it was through some monitoring. I would use the phone for 1 minute and then let it sleep for 2 minutes and you could see that the running % went down, as it is suppose to.
I kept monitoring the running % over the course of the day and it was fine. The less I used it, the lower the % would go; the more I used it, the higher. I also monitored what kind of apps I was firing up and I specifically made it an effort to not open any apps that were out of the ordinary. If I did, I checked to see if it kept my phone from sleeping and it did not (through my same usage tests as above). However, even after my close monitoring, sometime during that day, my phone would stop sleeping once again. I could tell because my running % never lowered, no matter how long I didn't use my phone. It would keep climbing which means it no longer slept. I made sure that I didn't do anything out of the ordinary too as I used the same apps as I did when the phone was sleeping fine. I checked "Android System" and it was getting larger. The battery was around 80%.
I charged up the phone again to max and made sure that nothing was preventing my phone from sleeping. Did the tests again and running % was proportionate again and I double and tripled checked to make sure the phone slept. I then left the phone not charging again to see what would happen as I would have no interactions with the phone to open any apps or change any settings. To my surprise, my battery was down to 60% (~ 6 hours of sleeping) when I awoke. I checked the running % immediately in the morning and it was at a very high percentage. "Android System", once again, dominated the partial wakelock portion.
So what's going on here? It doesn't actually seem like I'm doing anything on the user end to prevent the phone from sleeping. How come it decides to act up all of a sudden? If it was a bad app, how come it decides to prevent sleeping all of a sudden and not before? Even if it was a bad app, I didn't even launch anything while sleeping. Does the phone decide all of a sudden to stop sleeping?
The apps I use are:
Tasker
Y5 Battery Saver
Launcher Pro Plus
Twitter
SwiftKey
NHL Gamecenter
Handcent SMS
doubleTwist
Dropbox
Does anyone have the same problem?
Any help is appreciated.
Get rid of any task killers and battery savers they do more harm then good and most developers recommend not using them, they cause battery drain. The only battery app I use is Juicedefender because it keeps the phone from connecting constantly and keeps apps from running in the backround. I set it to connect every 15 min for 1 minute to sync, I turned off all notifications because they annoy me and I don't need to be notified everytime I get an e-mail or someone posts on Twitter or FB. My battery life has improved greatly once I dumped task killer. Also, I am running a Froyo mod and my battery is amazing now and my GPS works.
If you are in an area with a weak signal this will kill your battery because your phone is constantly searching for a signal and trying to connect. Also turn off wifi if you are not near wifi this will save battery.
Also try calibrating your battery and bump charge it. Here is a link for that. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=765656
The battery will improve, mine got better after a few weeks of break in. I am at 60% been unplugged since 10 am and I made plenty of calls, checked e-mails, sent e-mails, checked XDA developement all day and I have plenty of juice.
Good infos. O agree with not using task killer
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using Tapatalk
Hmm, thanks for the tips but there still seems to be something lingering around in my system that doesn't allow the phone to sleep. It seems to activate all of a sudden as well without user intervention.
I again left it overnight and it drained again when I woke up. I lose significant battery overnight when I sleep. I'm thinking about just restoring to factory settings. I've only had the phone for a week so I wouldn't lose that much data. I'll monitor it from the onset once I factory reset it and see if it's a hardware defect or something that was bad in my phone.
Do you have a live wallpaper installed? Also, do you have a bunch of Widgets on your homescreen? Are you constantly synching with e mail, FB, etc? No doubt something is running all night. It's not the phone, it's something you have installed. I set mine to sleep with Juice defender at night so nothing syncs. Check your wireless bill to see how much data is being sent while you sleep. Why not charge your phone while you sleep?
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App
Nope, no live wallpapers and the only widgets I have on my home screen are the LauncherPro Plus widgets, Smooth Calendar and BattStatt. The only syncing I have going on is Google Calendar and Gmail but both of those shouldn't cause the phone to not sleep.
I was thinking of using Juice Defender but I would rather just get to the root of whatever app is preventing my phone from sleeping and kill it at the root instead of finding workarounds. For all I know, my phone may not be sleeping not just overnight, but with normal use as well and it would adversely affect battery life throughout daily use. I need the piece of mind that my phone is properly sleeping.
And I have no issues with charging while I sleep, but again, I need to find the root cause. If for whatever reason I'm can't access a charger overnight in the future (such as if I sleep over at my gf's house), I want to know that I won't wake up with a dead battery in the morning.
I really appreciate the help though.
As for what I decided to do next, I actually factory restored my phone yesterday morning and so far it is working well. I did not download any apps at all to make sure that this problem didn't persist with a stock phone. If it did, I would know that it's a phone defect and not something I did. Throughout the next week, I'll be installing different apps one by one to see any one of those apps will cause my phone to not sleep. This will allow me to isolate the app. It's long and tedious, but I would go through it for better battery life. So far, it's been working as I'm already through 10 hours on my phone with moderate use and it's only at 50%. Whatever was destroying my battery before absolutely had an effect on my daily battery life as I would struggle to even get 10 hours on my phone with moderate use.
Same Here
I find your post very interesting. I have not yet used Juice defender, however, I am now more keen to battery drainage. I talked on the phone for about an hour the other day and my battery went from 100% to 40%. I find this unacceptable for a phone. Imagine taking conf. calls and conducting business in the field throughout the day. My battery would be dead in two hours without checking email
I hope you can reveal your findings to help us all.
Regards,
JROCK
Battery problem fixed using the simple technique similar to the one shared back in this thread.
I used to lose 10% per hour (or there abouts) and by 5 or 6pm needed to go on charger. At the very best with no use it dropped 3-5% in an hour.
Now its all changed...
After being off the charger for 35 min and taken 2 calls and sent a couple of txts she still read 100%.
At 5hrs 17min off the charger it is at 81% and there has been 6 calls in total and about 9 txts, plus a couple of appointments added.
Here is what they said to do and it worked...
1. Charge the phone for 8 hours, but make sure it is turned on while charging.
2. Unplug the phone, turn it off, plug it back in for 1 hour.
3. Unplug it, turn it back on for 2 minutes, then plug it back in for 1 hr.
Then unplug and enjoy the new battery life
Sounds too easy to work, but bugger me, it did!
27% is clearly abnormal.
Sometimes, I put the phone on it's charger after a pull day only using 27%.
I read somewhere on XDA that some early phones had defective screens that would only shut the backlight off and not turn off completely. Don't remember what came of that thread though.
I have a battery drain issue as well. My Captivate is 2 days old and been charging it every night. The first charge was done via the computer while transferring music over. After moderate usage (1 hour of music, browsing apps, learning how to use the phone, etc.), the battery died after 10 hours. GPS, and bluetooth was turned off. WiFi was used for maybe 20 minutes. When I got home, I charged it overnight for around 10 hours.
Today, the phone died on me after 9 hours. I rooted via z4root and applied RyanZa's latest OneClickLagFix, which both apps can be found on the market. Before that time, the battery said there was about 80% remaining. Fast forward to 6 hours later and the battery is gone. Again, moderate usage.
According to *#*#4636#*#*, my Screen On is at around 60%. A few other bars are pretty high as well, but I'm not sure how to do a screenshot on the Captivate right now. The only method I found requires using a PC. Plus, my battery is dead meaning I have to charge it overnight again.
I had an issue for the last couple of days, just figured it out earlier today. I had a corrupt thumbnail file on the external SD so my android.process.media (something like that) was constantly running.
I first realized something was wrong before I determined the battery life was bad when I noticed that my CPU was constantly at 11470-1200mhz or 975-1000 when I disabled the OC.
Unmounting the card would allow the CPU to drop to under 200 at idle so I knew it had something to do with the external SD. Turned out there was a bad file under a DCIM (camera folder), so after I deleted it, it became smooth as silk!
Of course it's still an i9000 rom so battery life is still questionable

Sorry for the hijack!
Here are yesterday's results:
Does these results look normal to you? I'm particularly concerned about the Social Hub and screen, and running. They're all higher than I expected. The brightness of the screen is set pretty low, maybe 2/10 of the brightness bar. As for Social Hub, well all I got is the Facebook widget, which is set to sync every 4 hours. Other kinds of syncing is off. GPS is off too. I don't have any battery saving type of apps yet, except for RyanZa's OCLF which includes the WiFi timeout.
I ended up charging the phone at 5% battery left. I had to sleep!

Battery taking a nose dive since 4.4.2?

Not sure whats going on but the battery on my Note 3 is horrible since the update. I fully charge it and 1 hr later (not even using it) I've lost 5-10%. It barely last the whole day now. I've even wiped the device and it continues to happen. Doing a quick test right now, fully charged its been off the battery for 20 mins and I'm showing 27% usage on the Android System, 10% on the Android OS and 15% of the screen and its down to 97% already.
Any ideas?

things to try: (no this isnt a 'disable anything useful like email and google plus' post )
1. camera - there is some well documented issue, if you open the camera app, there is some kind of battery drain going on. google it, there is tons of reading material for it. temp fix is reset.
2. I have noticed google now makes my battery life do what yours does, drop 10% easy in an hour of it being completely idle. open the app, disable google now, and then see what is going on. i hate disabling anything but its worked for me.

Same thing happened to mine. Went to bed at 95%, killed all apps, empty ram, turn off data but left wifi on. Woke up 8 hours later and it was down to 17%. Unprecedented 10% hour drain. Usuallly it drains 3 -5 percent overnight. Same thing happened to wife's phone and she is on Sprint but she left wifi and data on. Uninstalled Google camera and Skype and notice it went away. Testing it again tonight.
Edit: Test it again last night. 4% drop in 8 hours. Woke up to 96% this morning. Hopefully that fixed the problem.
Update: Went to bed at 11:30 at 68% and woke up 7 hours later and battery is still showing 68%! Surf the web for 5 minutes before battery drop to 67%. Amazing standby battery drain. I had turn off wifi, bluetooth, and data before going to bed and killed all the apps. Usually this will cause a .5%/hour drain but it barely drain .5% in 7 hours this time!

[Q] Battery problem?

Hello,
I have an unlocked HTC One and I think I have some problems with the battery. For example, in the morning when I unplug it from charging and it's 100%, if I use it for like 5 minutes then the battery will drop by 6-7% and I don't think that's normal.
Then I was not at home today and I had like 19% and I decided to power it off. Then I turned it on after like 10 minutes, I had 7% left. I left it on for 10-15 minutes without using and it dropped to 2%. I turned it off again and then I turned it back on after like 5 minutes and it had 6%.
What is going on? Should I do a clean install of the software? I'm using ViperOne 6.2.1.
Thank you!

might be some app that is draining your battery, to confirm with gsam battery monitor. Maybe a rom/kernel issue or a bad battery....
Alright so I've done what the guy advised here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2765655
Apparently it fixed some of the problems but I still fail to understand this thing: so last night I had 73% battery left. I turned off the phone and then turned it back on after 5 minutes, I had 68% battery left. Why is this?
Also, sometimes the battery level shown while the phone is on does not coincide with the battery level shown in Recovery TWRP. Why is that and what can be done about it?
Thank you!
There is no way to know precisely what proportion of total charge is in a battery, it can only be estimated. Temperature, current drain, and many other factors affect the estimate. I think you're expecting too much.

Huge problems with my galaxy s3 in the past few days.

Hello everyone!
This is my second post here...but I really felt like I had to take attitude this time and actually do something.
So my samsung galaxy s3 is acting so weird that I can't use it without something bad happening for one day.
So...first of all...my battery doesn't last more than four hours straight if, for example, I am listening to music.
It literally goes down about 1% every few minutes.
Also..there is something really weird happening with my battery even after it completely shuts down. Lets's say I am on 1% and the phone shuts off. After the screen goes black and I plug it in...the charging screen appears and the battery seems to be half charged. I open the phone again and it is already at 45%. All this operation takes a matter of seconds...but still it goes from 1% to 45%. After the phone is up...this percentage starts to go down even faster than before...in the end my phone shuts down again...and this time it starts to charge from 0%.
Today it shut off...and when I got home and plugged in the charger it didn't do anything...i just left it like that for about 10 minutes then tried to power it on without the charger being plugged in...and it worked. After that it started to charge. I have no ideea what is happening.
Also...my charging time is really big. I do not know why but when I use another charger from a samsung galaxy mini 2 it seems to charge way faster.
That's pretty much all so far. If you need more details, please let me know.
I hope you can help me sort this out!
Best regards!

1.Might be the battery is dead or broken, or its not calibrated. How old is the phone and battery?
2. It seems to take ages to charge my s3 lte too, give us a number in hours how much time you need?
3. The problem where phone wont turn on or show charging when battery is as low as 1%, i had this too, i think its normal, its protecting the battery
4. Do you have overcloacked anything? It happend to me when i had ovecloaced and did benchamark test, the phone froze and battery eas 5% when i restarted the phone, but before it was 45.
Not realy helpful but i am trying XD. Also might wanna buy new battery, its not that expesive
if you are running stock rom with no rooting no anything....100% it's the battery.
if not install stock and see how it goes...if it's acting normal then the mods are the problem...if it's the same it's the battery.
Do a factory data reset on stock recovery. See how that works out first
Starting from factory reset is bad idea - it should be the last step IMHO.
First what in such case we need to check is battery health.
Percentage we see on our phone is weak indicator, because it is calculated
Better to see the voltage in different situations. How to check this (terminal app or adb in console):
cat /sys/class/power_supply/battery/voltage_now
The lowest voltage that device can handle without heavy usage is less than 3500mV (I saw even 3240mV, but with low brightness, no data connection and after trying to make a call phone turned off).
The maximum voltage is obout 4300mV.
When You see 1% of battery and voltage is realy close to 3500mV or battery is charged and voltage after removing charge is dropping realy fast to then your battery very likely need to be replaced.
I bought Samsung Extended Battery (3000mAh) and this tripled the time usage than my 2 years old normal battery 2100mAh. You can see that difference in their capacity is much smaller - about 43% biger, but give me 300% much time on battery so old one was realy worn out.
BUT if your battery wasnt used for longer than half year, you can do as follows:
1. Discharge battery
2. When phone turns off - turn it on again, but into download mode (Home-VolumeDown-Power)
3. Leave phone for as long as it turns off again and repeat step 2 till time that Download Mode wont even boot.
4. Take off battery and place it back, and again try point 2 (start Download Mode) - do it until phone will show Download Mode for only 2-3 secconds
5. Again and last time replace battery and charge phone, but turned off
6. When phone will be charged, turn it on and leave it on charger for about one hour
After those steps use your phone lightly and try to repeat whole process one more time but only when the battery will normaly discharge and phone will turn off.
I tried those steps and battery for sure can work longer FOR ONE RUN, but unfortunately it can lead to loss of capacity much faster, but it will be noticable after one year - IMHO its always good time to buy new battery.

Nothing good will come from that procedure. Those steps were useful in the epoch of nickel-cadmium batteries, where the battery had no internal circuits to monitor itself and had a tendecy to uncalibrate. Those stops would force the device and the battery to re-adapt to one another.
But now we're using Li-Ion batteries, and those DO NOT like to be fully discharged. Hell, the device might not even recognize the battery, if it has really been fully discharged.

Okay...so I went to the shop from where I bought my s3 (Orange shop) And they told me to send it to their service and I did so...as I still had it under warranty. It was there for exactly a week and today I got it back. They told me they replaced the battery (which they actually did...I checked that) and the power connector from my phone. The battery it's still not good enaugh in my opinion. Immediately after I got it back...I turned it on and it had 79% battery. In about an hour it went down about 25% (so to 54%) but I didn't used it havely (note: the mobile data option was on). I really do not know what to do. I asked someone and they told me to send it again because this is not normal.
My s3 is running stock 4.3 and used to last waay longer back in the day.
What should I do? I literally got about max 5 hours of use before I sent it and I am afraid this will happen again. I do not even want to think what is going to happen if I listen to music for example.
I turned the phone off a few hours ago...then let it charge up to 59% and then stopped because I had to leave. I used it moderately for about 4 hours and 51 minutes (as my phone says) and i have about 2h and 15minutes of screen on time. My screen is using 50% of the battery and also Android system is using about 17%...chrome 12% Android OS 7% and I think everything else is less important as they use 7%<. After those almost 5 hours...while the mobile data option was on all the time I am at 14% battery.
What do you think? Is it good enaugh? Should I send it back? I really need help!
I am waiting for suggestions.
Best regards!

I think so, the fact that you have the screen on top of Android OS (and not the other way around) pleases me. You had your screen on for 2h15m, of course your battery went down fast
Test it, charge it full, and use it. Normally.
Do this for 2 or 3 days, and check how the battery lasts
