Battery drain due to Google Quick Search Box triggering alarms every seconds - OnePlus 3T Questions & Answers

Hello,
I would like to know whether I'm the only one with this issue.
I'm facing a not massive, but annoying battery drain due to com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox that generates many alarm trigger, almost one every seconds for several minutes (I can see them in the logcat), keeping my phone awake while the screen is off.
For example, for 42 minutes, Better Battery Stats reported 1580 alarms triggered, so 37,6 alarms per minute (94% of the triggered alarms).
The corresponding intent is com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/com.google.android.apps.gsa.tasks.VelvetBackgroundTasksIntentService
I tried to force close the Google app (v7.1.19), wipe it's cache, it's data, force update to 7.2 beta... no solution. It still drains the battery.
Am I the only one ? is there somebody with a solution (except removing the google app, I need it) ?
Thanks
Phone is OnePlus 3T, OxygenOS 4.1.3, rooted with SuperSU, and Boeffla Kernel.
Example of message on the log :
Code:
05-17 16:26:29.778 V/AlarmManager(4787): Triggering alarm #0: Alarm{23cc3ef type 0 when 1495031189779 com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox}operation =Intent { cmp=com.google.android.googlequicksearchbox/com.google.android.apps.gsa.tasks.VelvetBackgroundTasksIntentService }

No you're not alone - Google Quick Search Box is also the number one source of Alarms on my Galaxy S7 SM-G930W8 running Android 7.1.2 AOSP /LineageOS based Rom.

Do you have the Google feed enabled? If so, disable it and it'll get rid of the wakelocks and alarms. Are you on the latest stock oxygen OS? I think there's something in there that causes this to happen, wasn't an issue on 7.0, just on 7.1.1
Check the link in my signature too

My feed has always been enabled, and I never faced this issue till recently. It appeared a few weeks ago, and I've been on OOS 4.1.3 for longer time before without issues.

it's possible that the google app had an update which borked something. try disabling it and see what happens
Edit: the desktop/XDA signature isn't visible on the tapatalk or xda app. here it is: https://forum.xda-developers.com/oneplus-3t/how-to/battery-life-heres-how-fixed-t3536456

I'm trying to dig into this more but I'm hitting a wall. All I can find is more information (ie in a dumpsys alarm report) and in logcats that this is a major issue, I just don't know why. Like I said in a prior post, disabling the google now feed without removing the app gets rid of the alarms, but it's not feasible to keep it disabled, esp since I've been using it for years without issue. I think it's something that oneplus needs to address
Edit: tried disabling options for the google now feed (notifications, unchecked what to notify me for), ok google voice commands are all off, tried disabling location permissions and modify system usage permissions all without any success in getting rid of these pesky alarms. Really fed up with this >.<
Here is the dumpsys alarm command output:
Code:

Edit again @ScratMan38
Apparently it's the google now widget (on Nova, google and OP launchers). Removing the widget but leaving the feed enabled the alarm went away! Woot!!
Source: https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/...causes-google-feed-widget-to-go-crazy.513192/

It looks like the issue is solved for me. I kept the Google app enabled, with the feed enabled too ; but I disabled all OK Google features, in Nova and in Google app. The alarm is now gone, and I'm back to 2% per hour of battery usage.

I did the same, but I'm still getting 50 alarms per minute. Any other suggestions?

I forgot to mention that I installed Greenify.
I first tried to greenify the Google App, but Greenify could not keep it hibernated. So , I used it on Facebook, Facebook Notifications, and some other apps instead (FidMe, Google+, Netatmo, Essence, and Orange TV) and now the alarm is gone.
When I uninstall Greenify, the alarm comes back. So it looks like the alarm is generated by a third party app to wake up the Google App.
I did not try to find which one, as my phone is working fine now, I kept it like that.

How to solve this?
Now it seems even if google feed and always on is disabled, google quick search box is always running

All these kind of problems are easily treated with root+Xposed+Amplify.
Unleashed by ONEPLUS 3T rooted

Either xposed + amplify or root + wake block app

[GUIDE] Fixing massive battery drain on 4.4.2 (requires root/custom recovery)

The 4.4.2 update brings a rather annoying bug in the Google location service. That's the thing that's used in things like Google Now, Google +, but also the weather widget and such. In previous versions of the system, this used to just wake the device in a configurable time interval, check current location and go to sleep again.
In 4.4.2, this service keeps a nonstop wakelock, updating your location every single moment. There's no setting to make it less aggressive. You can disable the location service in settings completely, but for me even this didn't work and it also disabled all location-dependent features of multiple apps and widgets.
Here's what I did to get rid of this absurd battery drain:
install Xposed if you haven't already (this step requires root or a custom recovery)
install Wakelock Terminator and enable it in Xposed
look for Google Play services in the list of apps and enable “Prevent Wake Lock” for this app
tap on “Filter Wake Lock” and enter the following text in the pop-up:
Code:
NlpCollectorWakeLock NlpWakeLock CheckinService NetworkLocationLocator
finally, reboot your phone
Wakelock Terminator lets you filter the wakelocks of a single app for free; if you want to limit the wakelocks of multiple apps, you'll have to make an in-app purchase.
There are other ways to get rid of the wakelock. You can freeze the offending app using Titanium. You can use the Per App Hacking Xposed module to completely disable all wakelocks for Google Play Services. Both of these, however, will break a lot of apps, including the market. Wakelock Terminator is the only Xposed module I found that lets you select which specific wakelocks to disable and which ones to allow and this is rather crucial, since the app uses other wakelocks that you don't want to disable.
There's also Greenify, you might want to check that out as well. However, greenify doesn't let you decide which aspects of an app to block and which ones to allow either. It just forces the app to freeze as soon as you don't have it in the foreground, which, in this case, means it blocks the app all the time (Google Play Services only provides background services as far as I know).
Thank you, I was planning to go back to 4.3 or even 4.2.2 cuz I have been barely getting a day when i used to get a good 2 with my use. I'll try it tonight

Exactly the same situation here. I used to get two days with a generous reserve (although not enough to last a third day) and was down to barely a single day with 4.4.2. This fix has made the mileage sgnificantly better on 4.4.2, although I think there's still some room for improvement.

Yes, unfortunately. You need either root or a custom recovery to install Xposed. I'll update the OP.

No idea. This got rid of them for me completely. Are you sure you haven't made a typo?
At any rate, Google Play services is still the top battery hog on my phone, keeping wakelocks for about 30% of time, which is still a lot. The culprits are Checkin Service and Event Log Service, I'll try to find out more about them to see if I can safely blacklist those as well.

AFAIK, NlpCollectorWakeLock stands for Network location picker - it can be connected either with Google services (have to clear all data from gapps and google framework) or if the option of automatic wi-fi searching by google apps is enabled.
i am using the sixth sense rom right now

is it the same way as this guide does
if i just deny the the keep awake option for google play services?

No idea. I guess it won't do exactly what you want, if you disable wakelocks for the whole Google Play services app, you won't get notifications from apps like gmail, hangouts, the market etc. Also, it depends on how it blocks the wakelocks – whether it raises an exceptions or simply silently ignores the request. In the former case, you'll be getting force closes from all apps using Google Play services all the time, in the latter case, it would work, but probably too aggressively.
Anyway, just try and see for yourself. It might work, it might not.
Has anyone tried a soft reset?
Seems to have worked for my stock unrooted Butterfly S.
Battery seems to be better than before the update.
Very relieved.

YMMV, of course. Before following this guide, I recommend checking that Google Play services is indeed the culprit and that it is caused by the same wakelocks. It did improve things a lot for me, although not to the same efficiency as 4.3 or 4.2.
I haven't root my bs uet, but after turning off the stupid [OK Google] hotword detection, the battery will be a lot better
The setting is under Google Voice Search, if you don't see this setting, change your language to English (US)
Mine not rooted but this way works for me....I charged it full and plug it out, turn off my phone,
I wake up turn my phone on...and my battery suddenly became sooo much better.

you know, i can never seem to tell what is really using up power, i've tried some apps but they didn't work well, the system one in the power settings is very vague and doesn't make sense. what do you or others use? anything reliable and trust worthy?
I haven't had time to downgrade, but too busy. I flashed the only custom kernel we have and i'm underclocked to 1024 and powersaver as the governor and still not making it past 10 hours. so sad

I've been using the GSam battery monitor app and it appears to work quite well. However, on 4.4, none of the apps in market are likely to work out of the box, for example, GSam requires you to install and use their root companion app to give any meaningful results. Alternately, you can try some of the Xposed modules that make access to the battery stats possible.

[Q] Gear 1 no longer receiving notifications

Recently I had to do a factory reset on my Note3. It retained Root ok, and I used Titanium Backup to restore everything. Afterwards there were two things that no longer worked one of which is: Notification are no longer being relayed to my Gear1. Other data is being relayed: example - the weather appears correctly in the clock; apps like RunKeeper and Vivino work properly, S Voice works fine, alarm clock messages appear ok - indeed everything works fine except that I no longer receive any notifications.
I've done the obvious such as checking that notifications are turned ON in Gear Manager, and I've done the less obvious such as uninstalling PushBullet because some say it intercepts notifications at a very high priority level, but still I get no notifications come up on the Gear 1.
I reckon that most of the value I get from the Gear1 is in receiving notifications.
Any ideas and suggestions most welcome.

I'm using the standard SMS app that came with the Note 3 - I've not installed anything for SMS.
The other problem is that Tasker and Secure Settings between them are no longer able to turn the Pattern Lock ON/OFF. There are several combinations as to how this can be done. Normally I use the one based on the Xposed Module, but I've tried all permutations and some report an error attempting to turn off the Pattern Lock, and some don't; but either way they don't succeed.
Out of interest, I did the factory reset because my Note 3 for some reason suddenly would no longer stay locked onto my home WIFI - it kept dropping off and using up my data plan. I tried loads of things to get around that but nothing worked apart from the factory reset.
I had a Titanium Backup of everything, so I did the reset, checked I still had root (which I did) and then restored everything with Titanium Backup.
Afterwards all was seemingly OK but not the Notifications to Gear1, and not the Pattern Lock switch.
I tried the following to get around the problem but none of the ideas worked:-
Freeze all of the KNOX modules
Uninstall Pushbullet (I had read somewhere that it makes a very high priority grab for your notifications)
Uninstall the Gear software and go back to a really early version of Gear Manager. That didn't change anything, so I'm back on the latest Gear Manager now.
Cheers
Steve
Forgot to say - pretty important really - it's not just SMS notifications that are no longer coming to the Gear 1 - it is ALL notifications.
Apps like RunKeeper, Vivino, TasGear, Samsung Voice etc all communicate properly but NO notifications whatsoever arrive at the Gear 1 any more.
Cheers
Steve
do you have a problem with saproviders application? freezes or something, or battery draining on Gear ?
I have a Galaxy S4 DUOS , and rooted SVA rom and i have a high draining on Gear and no notifications from SMS/MMS application.
My GalaxyGear is unusable - it discharges after 5-6 hours
Maybe root on Phone or different Rom is responsible for that ??
I don't think I have a problem with th Saproviders app.
Battery life has always been 2 days on my Gear1. However since I've turned off the arm movement detection it is managing 5 days on a charge.
Presumably you've tried doing a reset on your Gear?
Cheers

At the beginning i don't have this problem.
I don't know when its starts (maybe after update Gear?)
.....
Yes - reset Gear and S4 - no improvement
reflash rom for S4 and gear - no improvement.
After install gear Manager , when Gear connect to the S4 I have a notification "application saproviders has stopped"
sorry for my bad English i hope that you understand what i am trying to explain.
I'm in agreement of the likely cause of the gear manager problems with kwiatki75. I'd clear cache and data then uninstall saproviders. Before launching gear manager which will then reinstall saproviders. It's definitely been discussed somewhere in this forum. If that doesn't work do the same with all the gear components leaving gear manager to last then fresh install gear manager.

As for secure settings..... I don't use any kind of lock screen but I do use secure settings to remove the key guard opening the phone. I've found you have to do some specific things to get the tasks to work.
A1 secure settings screen and lights on (I use 5 sec a2 will function immediately)
A2 wait 1 sec
A3 secure settings key guard disabled
A4 wait 1 sec
A5+ your task
Last A secure settings enable key guard.
I think your advice is sound. Before reading this I used Titanium Backup to restore SaNotifProvider and its data back to Jan 2014. That fixed the Gear Notification problem.
System Settings ought to work as I've not changed my previously perfectly working Tasker scripts. However I notice your suggestion indicates forcing the screen on and waiting 5 secs before attempting to disable/enable the Pattern Lock. I'll give that a go and report back what happens.
Cheers

The first action is just screen on time. It doesn't affect the speed of the action. I'm not even sure it adds to overall screen on time. The wait (under task) are 1 sec. I think the task description is something I posted maybe in tasgear......

Allow unlimited data access, whitelist from battery saving, and allow to run in background.
Allow the app to ignore battery optimization too

I've tried all the suggestions here and still have trouble. I'd leave my phone for an hour or so, turn the screen on and a whole bunch of notifications come pouring in from WhatsApp, Gmail, Messenger etc.
My settings are:
1. Apps -> Apps -> Special Access -> Battery Optimisation -> Not Optimised (for all my email and messaging apps)
2. Battery -> App Launch -> Manage Manually (for all my email and messaging apps)
3. Wireless & Networks -> Data Usage -> Data Saver -> Off
Is there anything else I need to do? This is a serious problem for me and quite frankly, I need to get a new phone if this keeps happening.

Thanks for your reply. I've already done that actually. If you don't touch your phone for say an hour, are you sure the notifications are coming in when it's sleeping and not just when you turn your screen back on?

Thanks for your help, I've discovered the issue now. I don't remember if someone mentioned this earlier and I'm not sure how I missed it, but the issue wasn't the apps closing when the phone went to sleep (since I did everything to make sure they didn't close), the problem was that the phone would switch off LTE and/or Wifi when the screen is off. The setting that controls this is in: Settings - Battery - More Battery Settings - Stay connected when device sleeps. Make sure this is turned on (it was turned off for me before).
I feel almost certain this was turned on in the past and feel it was only turned off in one of the firmware updates. I most certainly would never have turned that off. I can't believe they would use that as a default option since I can imagine only the most battery conscious users would want that off. They should at least have an option where the phone would automatically turn data back on periodically to check for notifications. I know there are third-party apps that do this but if they're going to include an option like that built-in, they should do it properly.
Anyway, problem solved, hope this helped someone else out there.
I have the same issue, but Stay Connected is on, and has been for as long as I've had the problem (2-3 days). No new apps, no new updates, affects all my apps. Driving me nuts. Anything else than doing a full wipe left to try?
same here, till yesterday everything was working fine, i didn't install a new app, configuration of battery settings, data background running is the same, also app locked in recent to run backround as before. update i did before 3 weeks. very strange
I'm very sure this problem occur since the newer software update, my device have same issue.
You can check how to remove PowerGenie (the huawei stock battery management), removing PowerGenie 'might' help you fix it.
I called Huawei and asked, and got a fix! It's not a huge lump of fun, but this is it:
Settings - System - Reset - Reset all settings
Note: all your stuff is still there after reset. Only thing that happens is that it forgets your wlans, your fingerprints, face recognition, lock screen pass/pattern, and all kinds of logins and permissions on your apps. And your apps will jump out of folders and make a hell of a mess. But it worked splendidly for me, notifications are popping up as they should, when they should. Gave me a nice chance to re-arrange my apps even.
Happy thoughts to Huawei (Norway) for having customer service available on the phone, on a regular number, and answering within a few seconds.

I just did it today and it was a complete lost of time. In addition of losing all settings (bluetooth, Wifi, applications and folder on launcher,...) it was not helping with notifications: no Outlook, no WhatApps, no banking app... In other word, nothing, it was worse than before.
I will continue to test settings like controlling launching applications and exclude applications from battery optimization.

It has worked wonders for me at least, notifications are doing their normal thing, including sending them to my FitBit. But I guess there are all kinds of settings that can mess up your notification system =/

Surely, and even between firmware versions.
Thanks for sharing tips.
Have a good day
Is it just push notifications you're not getting or are messages not coming through at all until device unlocked/app opened? I've been trying all sorts, searched "data" in settings and stumbled upon "unrestricted data access" all apps are disabled on this. Hoping next few hours will show that's me sorted finally.
Once my screens been off 15 minutes, friends WhatsApp msgs only show 1 grey tick their end until I open WhatsApp again

Same issue here, whatsapp don't receive any message or call when in standby. For grind just show one

How to keep Whatsapp alive (did try every "legal" trick in the book!) ?!

I am with CLT-L29 on stock 9.0.0.236 I noticed that recently (maybe after some recent system or app update) Whatsapp gets killed if the phone is on idle for longer time, say 20-30+ min.
I have the following set:
* Battery/App launch/Manage manually - all options enabled for Whatsapp (and only this did the trick in the past)
* Special access/Battery optimization/WhatsApp -> Don't Allow
* In Recent applications screen I have swiped Whatapp down and now it is with padlock and not being removed from recents when pressing the dust bin.
* Also did try to kill process "Power Genius" that I read is Huawei power manager - but I don't think this can be done without root
* Also did uninstall/fresh install of Whatsapp
Am I missing something?

Did you try rebooting after setting to manual in battery settings?
Hi, I had this for two days, after that it has started working perfect, wasn't just whatsapp for me either. Think some sort of learning system in emui is broken with regards to regularly used/priority apps. As you, I went through all menus.... Twice.

Twice?! I did it maybe more than 20 times!
Unfortunately it did not improve... I played with this over the last weekend, still yesterday evening and today morning - whatsapp web was saying no connection to the phone until I wake it up or open Whatsapp on the phone.
I will let it be for the time being (since out of ideas and don't want to reset the phone just for that). But it is driving me crazy since I use whatsapp for work as well and during the day (also in the evenings) I am checking every now and again if whatsapp is still running...
Same for work. I thought maybe it was to do with me using an always on music widget while I'm at work but it carried on working fine when I got home suddenly. God knows why then

Are you sure it's only WhatsApp?
Try those too:
Settings -> Battery -> More battery settings -> Stay connected when device sleeps -> Enable
Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Data usage -> Data Saver -> Disable

Well, I mostly use whatsapp... At one point email notifications were also delayed a lot (Gmail), lately it is better...
I noticed that it mostly happens when the phone has been idle (out of the pocket sitting on the table) for long time 10-20 min.
Those were already set as suggested:
Settings -> Battery -> More battery settings -> Stay connected when device sleeps -> Enable
Settings -> Wireless & networks -> Data usage -> Data Saver -> Disable
Make sure you set it to manual and all 3 options are on.
Now go to settings-apps-apps-3 dots in the right corner top-special access-battery optimization - find whatsapp and press allowed.
After that reboot in recovery and delete cache.
If it doesn't work then sue Zucc
Oh yeah, reinstall whatsapp after doing the stuff you did. This will fix your issue
never had any issues with Huawei and WA. the only thing had to do was to select that WA will be handled manually (no auto battery management for this app) and to not kill the app after phone goes to sleep

The Restless Soul -> didn't you mean "Don't Allow" - since this is the option to remove whatsapp from battery optimization - screenshot attached? (if so, I have tried that with no improvement).
I did try whatsapp reinstall already and cleared phones cash. But will clear the cash once more...
Most definitely - once the phone goes into deep(er) sleep whatsapp (and probably other background apps) get killed.
Also noticed yesterday that Gmail too, delayed an email (I received it 40 min after I got it on my desktop) until I started using the phone...

It was the same with me in the beginning...
Not sure when exactly it changed - I am now on 9.0.0.236
Strongly considering killing the Huawei power management application as per the below guide, the down side - will no longer be able to see the power consumption details:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/mate-20-pro/themes/remove-powergenie-to-allow-background-t3890409
Yesterday I left my phone for more then 2 hours just laying on the table...
I got 1 missed call from Whatsapp and my Gmails delayed until I opened the Gmail application (by 2+ hours)... so it is not only whatsapp - problem with push notifications of any sort when the phone is idle.
Today I did:
C:\>ADB shell pm disable-user --user 0 com.huawei.powergenie
Package com.huawei.powergenie new state: disabled-user
Let's see what will happen...

The above did not help. I did try disabling Android Pie doze mode - also no joy.
I am giving up for now...

Alarm clock Xtreme free/paid

Ever since I got my Pixel 4 XL I've been having trouble with the alarm clock extreme free app staying on and waking me up when it's supposed to. The alarm gets killed in the background because of Android 10. I have every imaginable setting set for it supposedly to make sure it doesn't get killed in the background but everyday it never wakes me up because it never runs. Does anybody else have the app and have a solution for this because email support isn't helping right now. I use the app because it has a crescendo alarm that slowly wakes me up and I don't know of any other apps that have the same thing that are customizable like this app is. Otherwise I would probably switch to one that works. Hopefully some of you have the app and are using it successfully and can give me a solution to why it keeps shutting off when the phone is asleep. Thank you for your help in advance.
I used that app in the past but stopped after reports of its developer tracking users and other security concerns... but have you tried changing the app's battery optimization to "not optimized?" Changing to "not optimized" is my first go-to fix for anything that acts weird.
Changed everything that was related to battery or optimization but it's still not working. If there was another alarm app on the play store that had crescendo alarms I would change to that one. So far I don't see any like that though.

Timely has crescendo alarms, but I've noticed similar behavior as you're describing with yours. I just started using the stock clock app for mine until I find a different solution.
In case you haven't considered it -- Android 10 also introduced "adaptive battery" where you can add or remove apps under the "restricted apps" section.

That's one of the first things I checked. It wasn't restricted. If it was I could have blamed the alarms not going off on that lol.
got it. figured i'd try. it's the first thing I do nowadays when I do a fresh install... ie turn off battery optimization on important apps, like google voice and gmail.
alternate solution in case others haven't mentioned it... the stock android clock does have a 'gradually increase volume' option - but it's an app-wide option... not specific to each alarm. I use the stock clock and it works consistently... it's never missed an alarm.

I would definitely use the stock clock to ensure compatibility but it only goes up to 60 seconds for gradually raising the alarm. I need at least 5 minutes of gradual sound so I don't throw my phone across the room lol
