Flashing a T-Mobile Galaxy S8 to Unlocked - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions & Answers

Hi,
I am new to the forums and I have no idea about flashing etc. I have a Galaxy S8 from T-Mobile. Since we are considering to switch to Verizon (family plan), I am kind of disappointed because I have a T-Mobile phone. I cannot return it, cannot find a proper trade-in deal, or anything without losing hundreds of dollars that I had paid for my phone.
My questions: Is it possible to flash my phone to the new unlocked US version (SM-G950UZKAXAA)? Do I need to network unlock first? Should I be able to use my phone on Verizon properly? Does this void warranty? Am I going to have a clone of the unlocked US version? Briefly, do I lose any functionality of the phone (Samsung pay, updates, security etc.) or the Verizon network (voice, text, LTE)?
Thank you. I am also sorry if this thread is not appropriate.

I bought mine from Samsung website, so I had to contact Tmobile through twitter and tell them to add my IMEI to their device distribution inventory system and whitelist it for the device unlock app. Hope this helps

Will the update erase the unlock on captivate?

I unlocked my samsung captivate right after i got this beautiful phone. And I am expecting the Froyo now. I am not sure if the unlock will be erased by new new version of android.
If it will happen, I will just wait until XDA release the new unlock app.

You know something that the rest of us do not?
Once the captivate is unlocked, it stays unlocked. Im not sure about factory reset but nothing else will remove the unlock.

No one knows what the next version will do - but you should know this. The unlock happened because Samsung stored the code in a file. It looks like new firmwares fixed this, so if the unlock is removed, it may not be so easy to get.
The app just read a file and got the code. You didn't need the app, you could have opened the file and read the read the code. IF the unlock is removed and the original code doesn't work, it will be a while before someone finds a new way to unlock.

Thx, I can wait till I see a new post about what gonna happe.
captivate is coming here in Canada but I cant wait to grab the captivate so i get the AT&T version. to my surprise, i got it factory unlocked (the online store where i purchase GSM phones factory unlocked). It has all AT&T bloatwares and logo but I punch in and use my non-AT&T sim on the captivate.
i removed the bloatware apps. now the problem is I cannot update OTA, coz AT&T server for update is the captivate recognizes.
this would be a regret on being impatient on grabbing the captivate that will be launched here, but i learned a lot of tricks and hacks from this forum. I believe that developers will come up with a ROM flash technique to update the captivate even not OTA. (like the N900 re-flash).
I was told by an AT&T rep (so take it for what it's worth) that for any phone except the iPhone, you could simply call AT&T and ask for an unlock code. Don't if this would work on rooted phones or not though.

hmm...so that is for a SIM unlock right? To be able to use the device with non-at&t sim....but not to get rid of the whole at&t thing from the device.

Well that's a bunch of BS. The rep I spoke to said you needed to call in for it, so I don't know if that makes a difference. And he seemed to be one of the senior guys there. The reason I even asked the rep about this is because my wife goes to the Philippines a lot, and it's cheaper to buy a local SIM card there than use AT&T's coverage.

Yep. See forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=8330830&posted=1#post8330830 to get the code using the SDK. There may be other ways further on in that thread.

Options for Unlocking AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 GM-900A

Hey Everyone,
I need assistance with unlocking my smartphone; it's an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 GM-900A. I did a little research on the internet and it's my understanding that unlocking a Samsung smartphone linked with AT&T is a bit more difficult than it already is with other companies. I also saw a lot of sites that offer "unlocking" services for a certain price. Before I decide to do that, I wanted to know if there were any others options or which site is most reliable. From what I've seen and read, it seems that this forum is the best option for seeing if this is possible. Appreciate any assistance you guys can offer.
I am not familiar with unlock sites but have heard mixed reviews on them. Those sites can only unlock the sim card, not the boot loader. Just thought I would put that out there since you didn't specify what kind if unlock you were looking for. I recently submitted a sim unlock through AT&T for my s5 since I am out of contract.

Unfortunately, mine is still under contract but I would like to unlock my smartphone so it can be used with another carrier. This is the type of unlock service those sites are saying they can provide, right? I've also read and heard mixed reviews on the internet, which is why I came here in hopes that I can get additional info on this. Thanks for your prompt response.
Just use att they will unlock your sim

Call ATT. New laws made all carriers be (generally) required to unlock their SIMS not bootloaders under some conditions. see link https://www.fcc.gov/consumers/guides/cell-phone-unlocking-faqs
If u are under contract they will make u pay but u then meanwhile u can use another carrier. Here is a link to an unlock service. https://www.doctorsim.com/us-en/unlock-phone/samsung/

They serve entirely different purposes. Sim chooses carrier (ATT,etc). Bootloader chooses what will be started when phone is booted ie system(rom), recovery(TWRP etc), bootloader itself. Bootloader unlock means changes can be made to what will start under different boot requests. No disadvantages to just unlocking sim, often used for foreign travel where your regular sim will not connect. Many times carrier will unlock SIM LATE in contract for foreign travel reasons.

Are you under contract via a next plan thru at&t? If you are planning to unlock to switch carriers I imagine you want to end service with at&t. If so they will want you to pay for the phone in full or return the phone. If you don't pay & keep the phone I'm pretty sure they blackball the imei so it can't be used by any carrier. So what's your end goal here?

Yes, I'm under a contract that has been suspended and told them that I am currently not able to pay but also am not able to get another phone due to financial reasons. They said they understood my situation but cannot unlock my phone due to the contract and that once I am able to pay, they will provide me the unlock code if I still want it or wish to continue using their services. I guess what my end goal is to not have to pay for another phone when I'll only use it for medical reasons and once I am financially stable, I can go ahead and pay and probably continue with AT&T. I see your point and understand the predicament I have. I'll just have to wait and see. . .

i try to factory unlock it but at&t unlock service do not complete because the phone dos not have the General Requirements
Either the contract or next agreement needs paid off or you could try one of the many unlocker sites to pay for an unlock code.
I was easily able to unlock mine from AT&T once my contract ended.

Per AT&T you need to meet the General Requirements for All Unlock Requests:
The device must be designed for use on, and locked to, the AT&T wireless network [before submitting a request to AT&T to unlock it, aka they can't unlock a Sprint phone)
It must not be reported lost or stolen.
It’s not associated with fraudulent activity.
All the device’s service commitments and installment plans are completed, and all early termination fees are paid in full.
The device is not currently active on a different AT&T customer’s account.
If you performed an early upgrade, you must wait the 14-day buyer’s remorse period before you can request to unlock your previous device.
Note that there are exceptions for Deployed Military Personnel.

Have you tried calling/contacting AT&T support to find out what the reason is? How did you end up with an AT&T phone overseas anyway?
This website works for me:

Go to Samsung
And then AT&T Samsung (ALL MODELS) $14.99
Good luck!
You can find cheaper services on eBay they ask for your imei number and send you an unlock code. Only attempt where unlocking your phone is legal if it isn't in Egypt then you can get fined.

mmm.... it sounds like that you are dealing with a stolen device, sorry can't help you. You should go get a refund from whoever defrauded you by selling you a stolen phone.
Note that helping you to use a stolen device is considered illegal in many jurisdictions. Per terms of service of XDA-Developers and forum: "... you cannot break any laws here, since we'll end up dealing with the legal hassle caused by you. Please use common sense: respect the forum, its users and those that write great code."

No. There is no way to carrier unlock your phone without TMo whitelisting your IMEI and sending an update that unlocks it. USUALLY they won't do that unless you are an established (and active) customer or your phone is fully paid off. If your phone is fully paid off then you should still be able to work something out with them. If not, you are SOL.

I happen to own both a pixel 4 and a oneplus N10 5g. I was able to unlock my oneplus via a little program someone wrote that removes a bunch of apps via ADB, it worked perfectly the same week I got the phone from Metro. I'm sure someone could look at that little program and figure out what apps need to be disabled and make it work for the pixel. I'm gonna see if it works now without changing anything.

T-Mobile variant OEM unlock

I bought a carrier unlocked Pixel 5 from Amazon. Unfortunately, it's a T-Mobile variant, and I can't perform a OEM unlock. I tried calling their customer care, but they're all clueless.
Is there any paid service to which I can turn to to get my device unlocked?
Also, I read forums where guys ask representatives in Twitter/FB messenger to get device unlocked. If this is possible, how do I go about this? Where do I get the representative contact?
Unfortunately all we know of is you will need the unlocked variant.
I don't believe any carrier Pixels(s) 5 are bootloader unlockable.
Sorry.

I'm not sure if this is true, but if you call them or pay off the device, you can get bootloader unlocked. You can try getting it SIM unlocked via T-Mobile app, if it's paid off.

Unfortunately, even if it is paid off, I need to have a T-mobile account (not sure if it is any account of the account by which the device was bought) associated with the mobile for atleast 40 days. No way around that. So unfair though. Even after it being paid off. Anyways, thanks for the answers. Really appreciate it.

Yup. This is the reply they gave in Twitter and FB both.
Just purchased a "unlocked" device on swappa only to receive a locked at&t pixel 5.
Requested carrier unlock by calling at&t customer service. My vzw Sim card started working after they unlocked but OEM unlock was still greyed out. Applied all pending updates in settings, then OEM unlock became available. Immediately unlocked the bootloader and loaded Los 20.
