Audio quality issue with non-MiUI Roms - Xiaomi Mi 5 Questions & Answers

I have tried half dozen non-MIUI Nougat Roms and found they have very bad Audio Quality. I am a little Audiophilia and I just find the Nougat Roms to be way overly Bassy and unbearable to listen to. Where as the MIUI Roms have perfect clean Audio.
Does anyone know reason for the bad audio on the non-MIUI nougat Roms?

It's not necessarily bad audio, it's output is just shaped differently. You can fix that with the built in equaliser (not that great) or just install Viper4Android and tune the audio to your preference.

Tried it already with Viper4Android and did not like it either. I just find the MIUI Roms have superior quality.
I had even tried different Kernels but the same result. Guess need to stick with MIUI for the moment till a Rom with a good Audio Quality is out.

There is one other thing you can try. You can try to use the audio config file from MIUI on LOS, but that might cause a bootloop. If you make a backup of the file it should be easy to test this. AFAIK the audio config is the file located in root/system/etc/audio_effects.conf but I suggest you confirm with a dev. whether you can simply swap the two out.

Audio boost

Hi everyone,
As most of you nexus one users know, when in a call the sound from the handset is not loud at all. I have to use the headset that came with the phone in order to listen to the other person on the line loud enough.
So I was wondering if there's a hack or a code that I can push or do via ADB or some other form that will boost the audio up a bit so I don't have trouble listening to people when in a call.
P.S. I'm pretty comfortable with my ROM and stock kernel so that's why I'm asking of another way other than a new rom or kernel.
same here. I've been looking all around for something, would really like a 91 ROM with audio boost but I haven't really found anything yet.
currently on Geo411m's.
If anyone knows of a stockish 91 ROM with an audio built in please post.
i can hear on mine fine, but to answer your question im not aware of something you can modify, i think i remember seeing a mod that makes the audio from the music player louder though.
however when i am using sipdroid the audio is just a little bit too quiet and i dont think it uses the noise cancelling mic for some reason
Thanks for the reply guys.
But yes, I've been looking for this and all I could find is a tweaked Kernel but it has many other tweaks that i find unesessary for me, that's why i'm looking for the audio mod only.
I'll keep looking, if I find something I'll edit my first post.
I couldn't stand it anymore and loaded intersect's 2.6.34 with audio. so far no problems, which amazes me considering the problems I had with frf50 and this kernel.
The only way to do this is through a kernel patch.
IR's kernel and pershoots have them for sure. I think there's some others too.
AFAIK, nobody has patched a stock 91 kernel for the public yet, but maybe someone can.

CM FM Radio... Only mono?

Big fan of ya'll for a long time... Just decided to sign up and ask a question:
I installed CM7 for the first time, mainly because I wanted FM Radio on my N1. I'm disappointed to find out that the sound comes out from only one channel (right side, mono only, no matter what the setting).
I researched heavily but couldn't find a similar post. Am I the only one experiencing the FM Radio sound coming out of only one earphone?
BTW, all other features are working perfectly...
My radio is 5.08
hboot is fully updated
I'm using one of the CM7 nightly after the RC1
Thanks!

I don't know whether it provides stereo or not as I don't listen to music at all when I turn on radio. But I do have sound from both sides.

Thanks for your feedback... Definitely, the issue is that I'm getting sound out of one side (right earphone) only... I tried multiple headphones, including the original N1 headset... All the same, sound comes out of one side...
Not sure what the issue is. As I mentioned, I researched a lot and no one seems to have this problem... Everything else on the phone runs perfectly.
bump
Still, after format and full wipe, re-installed CM7 RC2, and FM Radio still comes out of one (right) earphone.
Working great here. Audio is coming out in stereo. If you click menu in the Radio app, then settings, under audio output mode there is a setting for stereo or mono.

I've tried everything... Nothing seems to work, sound still comes out of right earphone only...
I'm still baffled as everything else on the phone works perfectly... I've wiped (data, dalvik) and formatted partitions, fresh installed the ROM... Still the same issue... It must then be a hardware issue... My radio is 5.08... Does that make a difference??
Just want to be sure, did you test playing music through the normal music player? And both sides work through that?

oh yes, definitely! Sound from music player is perfect, can't ask for better... I even tried different sets of earphones, including the stock N1 earpieces... As I said, everything on the phone is working perfectly except for the FM Radio... I don't even get the wonks everyone is complaining about.
I know this is a hopeless case as I seem to be the only one with this problem...
Did another full wipe (system + dalvik), plus formatted the partitions... installed CM7 rc3, fresh and clean... Still, I can only hear the FM Radio sound coming out of the right earphone...
Oh well, I'm figuring it must be a driver/hardware issue... Since it's basically the bluetooth unit transmitting the sound, maybe my N1's BT is purely mono (or somehow stuck on mono (?))...

[Q] Headset problems

If i plug-in an other headset than the original X1 headset it echoes and I don't hear anything on my right side. Has someone got a solution? Or do i have to buy another one? reaction A.S.A.P. please
Is there not any software that can change bass etc. for X1?
lemme think...
easiest way is flashing a custom-rom with htc sense 2.5, it comes with an app called "audio booster" which gives you an equalizer w/ presets. most of these roms also have modded audio drivers cooked in for better sound (at least of ultrashot's dynamics i know for sure).
then there were quite some apps for win mobile, but they're are all very old by now. if you don't want to flash a sense-rom, you could search for "srs wow hd". another audio-driver, but iirc there were always problems with it...

I've had WOW HD buy now and did not work. I already have a 826x ROM. Audio booster also tried and it didn't do much. I just want to be clear about the problem, its about that i o not have the original headset of the X1 wich you get in the pack if you buy the phone, i have a completely different headset. On the right side of the headset i don't hear anything and in the other only a echo with kggg sounds.
You can use any headset you want. Rather sounds like yours is crap/broken. ^^ or hw-failure on x1. Have you tried others?
Not something you fix with installation of software.

Can it we a hardware problem? If so thn the original wouldn't work either, right?
Don't be afraid to give answers people, thanks.
yeah well, if stock is working, then it's not on the phone.
how's your headset, does it work on another device? have you really tried different headsets or just the one?
stock-headset isn't specially recognized as "original SE".

I am not using an SE headset, but the headset works on other devices pretty wel.
But I think to see another problem, when playing a song, the audio is the same as on the headset. Maybe there is a problem in the audio files? (although it sounds a little weird)

Bluetooth audio quality

Can someone comment on the bluetooth audio quality on OmniROM 4.4.2? I tested it today and, to my ears, it sounds much worse than 4.3 (either CM or Omni).
I tried searching around but there were conflicting opinions. So I'd like to know what people around here think.
I too feel that audio quality over Bluetooth was better a few weeks ago.
There were one or two builds where it got really bad but it's OK now but not as good as it once was.
It may have been the use of GravityBox which I used for two or three nightlies before canning it again but I'm not sure.
I use Omni on a Sony Xperia Z so this is only in regards to this phone.
I'm now sure that the audio quality over bluetooth is worse than it was a few weeks ago.
Today I flashed CM11 to compare BT audio quality and on CM it was so much better (like it was on Omni when I started using it).
On Omni there is almost no bass at all and highs are a bit distorted whereas on CM audio over bluetooth (Xperia Z with Sony SBH20) sounds almost identical to directly plugged in headphones.
Don't know about Sony but on oppo the problem was using too old blobs which derped the ACDB setup.
So this can be really a device specific issue
Unfortunately this depends on the device maintainer to
1) test and confirm it
2) try to fix it
I dont know what the maintainer situation for the Z is at the moment

humberto is coming up to speed, but the Z isn't particularly well maintained right now. Doesn't help that I can't even FIND mine at the moment... I'm not sure where it went.
Most of the Z guys are trying to solve the camcorder issues properly. (I don't like Thomas' approach, there's got to be a cleaner solution esp. since all third-party cam apps work OK...)

If it is a blobs issue, can anyone comment on the I9300 (Galaxy S3) and bluetooth audio?
I have newly installed yatour box with bluetooth receiver on my car and the sound quality over bluetooth from I9100 with Omni is really bad.
The sound is almost crackling on some quiet places. Sound is perfect if connected to yatour's aux input with cable.
I have to test it with another transmitting device (without Omni) to rule out problems with the bt receiver though.
Bluetooth audio quality is pretty awful on the N7000 too, with my sony mw1 the n7000+omni 4.4.2 is distinctly bad compared to any other bluetooth source I have (phones, laptop, pc).

Change Bluetooth Codec

Hello guys !
I just updated my MIUI ROM from Android 8 to Android 9. Since I have this one, my Bose QC35 II connected via Bluetooth uses the SBC Codec, which delivers a bad quality comparing to AAC. I tried to change this via the developer options, but when I set to AAC it always comes back to SBC. When I was on Android 8, I had the AAC.
Do you know how can I change that ? I'm on MIUI 10.1.1.0 Global
Thanks a lot, hope my english is understandable
I didn't find a solution, always on SBC Codec which the sound quality quite bad. If anyone has a solution
Isn't Aac a iPhone/apple thing....?
Anyways you can force a specific output mode in developers settings.
My mi8 on global beta defaults to aptx when using my Bluetooth headset.

No it isn't, it's a classical codec. I tried to force it, but it always goes back to SBC, here is my problem !
What I meant is that aptx is superior in every way.
But I guess the BT device your using is aimed at iphones and doesn't support aptx ?
Maybe try and switch to global beta and check if the issue was fixed.

Same thing on my mi mix 2s. While everything works just fine with an Nvidia shield and Android pie. So it's xiaomi fault. I'm Very disappointed because SBC is really inferior.
Try developer mode!
Already tried on dev mod, doesn't change anything. When you set on AAC, the phone simply doesn't care, hope it will be corrected in an update !
Now I am having the same problem and couldn't find any solution. In Developer options, my arrangements revert to old ones when close, they don't stick. I have Android 8 MIUI 10 Xiaomi Mi6. Via Magisk Manager, I flashed codecs and necessary modules to my phone but nothing's changed. when i connect my JBL Free to my phone, SBC logo right next to the earphone's name is there. Before I lose my mind, someone please help me! I am inexperienced to this complex Android world :crying:
I'd start by posting in the correct MI6 subforum
You can use PowerAmp, it can force better audio codec (by cable and BT).
Have you tried it ? It doesn't work
Just a quick update, since the last update 10.2.3.0, i've got the AAC when using my Bose QC-35 The sound quality is waaaaayyyy better than before. Thx Xiaomi !

I didn't receive BT fix with my new update and I dont believe I will I bought Sennheiser Momentum True Wireless Earbuds and I rarely have stutters thanks to aptX but if codecs were good I would have perfect connection with these earbuds.
I'm afraid you just have to turn on BT in order to change BT CODEC
