2015 Fire 7" (5th Gen) Vs 2017 Fire 7" (7th Gen) - Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was under the impression that the new 2017 model of the Amazon Fire 7" was the same firmware as the ones we currently have. It seems to use the same CPU/GPU/RAM/Storage/Battery/Wifi/etc. The only difference I saw was an updated screen, and a colored case.
However, I saw this link here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html?nodeId=202144590
This seems to indicate that the new devices are being labeled as the 7th Gen, where we have the 5th Gen. It also seems to be running a newer firmware, 5.4.0.0 vs 5.3.3.0.
Does anyone have one of these new devices. Is there a difference? Am I reading this wrong? Thanks.

Maybe someone can try flashing it into a 2015 fire 7... Just curious.

Some differences between the devices:
- The 2017s Model is lighter and thinner than the old one
- In Europe the 2017s device costs 10€ more than the old one (2015: 59,99€ / 2017: 69,99€) and it have no Alexa on board in Germany
- 5.4.0.0 have some wrong translations
- The 2017s Model have no death pixels, my 2015s Model have some
Here are both devices (left: 2017, right: 2015):

The changed the button layout a bit (up: 2015, down: 2017):

How does the screen compare? The 2015 model looked stretched. Does that happen on the 2017 model?

Yes, as you can see in the picture above, it looks a little less clinched.

Yeah, 5th gen Fires had tons of dead pixels - the screen was of low quality, it seems.

Why is mine the only one that has 5.3.3.0?

Consider yourself 'lucky'. You can always upgrade; the opposite is not always true and often leads to unrecoverable bricks.

Because it looked to be the same components, I was originally under the impression that the logic boards were the same. Now that I see the side by side pics, it would seem the redesigned button layout indicates a new logic board. Interesting.

Are there any new informations about possible differences?

Is it a safe bet that if i get this Fire 7 2017 version for my mom while its on sale i can root it and put an android rom on it?

I wouldn't count on it. It is most likely going to come with 5.3.2.1 or 5.4.0.0

I would expect the same as daniel3016.

Unlikely, but you should be able to easily install Google Play store on it without rooting.

is there a chance to root the new one? I bought it on Amazon Prime Day for 35usd

Depends on FireOS version; anything over 5.3.2 is unrootable at present.

In regards to Angry Birds HD, it would appear that the version for the ThinkPad is no different from the Amazon App Store release. I installed the Lenovo App Store Apk from this dump and was able to find a purchase link for Angry Birds HD, only to see that it has the same package name as my Ad-Free Amazon App Store version!? I wonder if the Lenovo version even says HD when installed in your app drawer. I was thinking why would they make an HD version when its already HD? Now I have my answer, they didnt.

not sure i get your point, you look at a picture and you decide its not HD?
I can confirm the few places they use HD images are for sure only HD material, you cannot run this on any device with a resolution of less than 1024x600.
then graphics are beyond the screen screen and density setting do not help as its native sized graphics in the game.
so you are probably wrong about the visual compare, as i had a physical encounter with the HD version and its not compatible with a 800x480 device, which all other AngryBirds editions are..

^ This. It sounds VERY similar, but it's taken almost a year this to come out, and the NC is already fairly established (same thing with the Kindle Fire). It's the way of things. At least when you're ready to put the Nook into retirement, there should be a strong upgrade to go to.
It's a rooted Nook, which is a step up from the Fire....
Kobo Vox and an Easy Nook Color 2 Upgrade
The Kobo's most promising feature is definitely the AFFS+ display, something that could easily be added to the NC2. If it was just an updated NC then it should have bluetooth and FM in it. I was thinking that an easy NC2 update for B&N would be to:
1) Replace the IPS display with an AFFS+ one.
2) Enable hardware support for Bluetooth AND the FM radio.
3) ICS! Android 4.0
4) Video out?
I am not talking about an uber tab here, after all the NC is and will likely stay an e-reader primarily. It does what it needs to, and there is no reason to add more horsepower under the hood. But even if they only did what I suggest, and lowered the price it would likely fly...
They will probably not do it like that, and will probably f it up by taking out things that make it popular ( east rooting and booting from the card slot? ).
Still, for the least amount of investment, and maximizing their current designs lifespan that is definitely what I would do.

That sounds pretty good... of course with a slight bump in cpu and memory...a killer GPU is probably too much to ask for an ereader More seriously though, better speakers would be nice too and/or pen input.

[Q] is anyone working on the kfhd for cm11 or usb otg support?

Are there any developers working on or is there a cm11 ROM for the Kindle Fire HD? Has anyone got USB otg to work on the kfhd?
And basically what work, if any is being done on this platform? I'm curious if I should stick with the kfhd or upgrade to the hdx this Christmas. The deciding factor is if the devs are still working on the HD? If so I'll hold of on my purchase of the hdx until the price drops.
Thanks!
We've definitely hit a slight lull here on the kfhd forums but hashcode is still maintaining cm 10.2 for us. And a few other devs
The hdx is yet to be rooted and the boot loader hasn't been exploited yet either if you demand ROMs and root then the hdx is at the moment not for you. I'd recommend a nexus 7 for those things
Now the kfhd is a brick you cannot break the thing (physically) I definitely recommend it for families with kids my three year old has been rough with ours.

Installing a Nexus 7 Gen 2 in my BMW e46 - Do i need a cd/radio player?

So i got my new car today
And found a site that sells a "complete" kit for installing a Nexus 7 Gen 2 in the car.
However (i feel like I'm a senior for asking this, but here it goes):
Product: http://www.ironlight.us/products/
Dont i need to use the old cdplayer/radio unit here?Im not interested in those function and actually just want Spotify and navigation. But i have seen other videos where people have cd players/radio units behind the tablet in the dash. This uses and amp instead
If u see the wiring schematics, is that enough to get it up and running and i can just take out my cd player and reattach if/when i sell my car.

Hello,
Based on the diagram here you do not need your radio. This set up will make your Nexus 7 the stand alone device. All of the audio will be provided directly from the Nexus 7. From what I see here you basically just remove the radio, install a small amplifier, dash kit and your Nexus 7. It should plug straight into your factory speaker system.
Note: I am just assuming from the pictures you have provided, actual results may vary.

Thanks, really appreciate it.
I guess i loose some audio quality over the DAC alternative, but atleast its using a ground loop isolator which should help with RF noise and distortion.
Only thing now to "worry" about is that the thing i didn't think about was me having the new Nexus 7 tablet, and since I'm new to android, i don't know if for example cardroid rom works on the 2013 nexus 7, or just the old one.
But appreciate your help mate
