I would like to put the HD 8 tablet into a virtual machine. However I can't seem to find a VM that supports it, or the proper file format to plug into one. Anyone have ideas?
First of all, this is the Amazon Fire 7" (5th Gen) sub-forum. The HD 8 is a totally different device.
Second, your question makes no sense. Are you trying to run a VM on your tablet, or are you trying to run a VM on your PC that runs the FireOS software? Either way, there's no such way to make it happen.

There IS a way to run a VM on the Fire tablets but it's not that usable.

Yeah I read that too. I also read, but can't find again, you can use the build.prop to set one up.

VMware runs on the tablets and you can have a virtual desktop from your PC. If that's the case, there has to be a way to get your virtual tablet on your real desktop.

Doesn't matter. The same should apply to any Amazon tablet in regards to this anyways.
Anywhere to get a FireOS .iso? Can the source code on their site be compiled into one, or into something VMware would recognize? Currently there is no way to make these tablets a VM. Amazon stopped supporting emulators on their site in 2014. I really don't want to do the testing I want to do directly on my device. I may have found a way to root, but I don't want to test it on the physical device. So if I can't find a way to emulate it, I don't know if I will be comfortable trying/testing my possible method.

Lol - you will have better luck finding vacuum tubes for a 1950s era Zenith TV. Many devs/enthusiasts acquire scrifical devices (perhaps with a cracked but functioning screen) off auction sites. Cost of being in the game.

Doesn't matter anyways. I was using an app that tells you all the permissions another app has, or has asked for. I was then comparing the list of granted permissions with the list of permissions that app has. I managed to get the commands for checking granted permissions, but I can't find the command(s) for checking the permissions an app has ASKED for, but WASN'T granted them. The idea was to use ADB to add/grant the permissions the app asked for, but didn't get. You can only grant certain permissions to apps when they ask for the permission(s). So I was hoping to gain root by adding all the permissions Kingroot needed, but didn't receive, because it doesn't have root access/authority.

Hi guys, I was wondering if the ROM of OUYA is already available online to be changed, and if it is not it can be moved by connecting the console to the PC? Or the console's USB port is not suitable for this purpose? And having already Ouya the ROOT else is already installed the Recovery? or you have install? And how can you get into Recovery? Ok maybe it's still a bit too early for these questions since it is still in the hands only of those who have contributed to the project on Kickstarter but if anyone was informed I'd like
I"m assuming you'll be able to use ADB and what not. Ouya said, the standard Ouya can be used to develop games, so it would seem reasonable all Ouya's can be connected to a PC, and I assume the USB port will be sufficient.
As for the rest, I think it's just a tad early to know with certainty. The only well know people to have the any units are those early dev kits, and some of hardware reviewers. I haven't heard or read, nor do I believe they would release the Ouya ROM. And based on what Ouya has stated, it looks like we're getting late beta firmware/rom since they want to add more features, improve performace, and other items based on developer and early backer feedback before the June launch in retailers.
I really would like to see ROM customization for the OUYA as I feel duped by the fact that it won't run my pre-purchased play store apps and games. There's got to be a way to have both. I want this thing to replace my PS3 as my entertainment center but I must have Google music working to do so. I also want to play my purchased games like NFS.

It'll run em, you just have to sideload it.
Ouya said the condole would be rootable and they would be including the instructions on how to do it. Now we just have to wait until someone receives theirs and see if this is true or not?
The OUYA is simple to root. I think any generic ICS root method would work. Google Glasses was rooted by Jay Freeman just by a little tweaking, and a generic. ICS root method. I'm picking up on and plan to help as much as possible.

It was rooted quickly because there wasn't any locks on it. One of the developers at Google even said it's hardly considered rooting because there were no barriers to break through.
Mine is sitting at home waiting for me right now, so I'll start looking into building a Custom ROM for it this weekend probably.

Just be careful, because of the lack of entering fastboot/recovery during bootup, you can easily soft brick it. I've already heard of someone messing with the system and bricking. Plus you can't really build much of an custom rom without kernel source, I wouldn't seeing an better stock but won't change much for right now.

Thanks for the concern Paulenski, not jumping into anything without looking ahead. I'm not talking about Cyanogenmod or anything as far as custom ROM's go. I just want to put together a flashable zip that will install working gapps, su, busybox, an alternate launcher, etc. A "start here" package. Not that it could be flashed yet, but I've contacted Koush and Teamwin about porting a custom recovery.

Fair enough. Ammend that statement to say "It'll run most sideloaded apps, provided no additonal downloads/framework is required." I hadn't actually started playing with the console when I said that.
However, if you have an android phone you might be able to install it on there, download the extra data, and copy those files/folders over to the ouya. Might be worth a shot.

Oh I am so excited for some good customs ROM's. I am also not looking for CWM for a main ROM in general, but a amazingly beefed up Ouya layout, as its not as well as it should be visually and organized. And I know MANY will be using XBMC as a media center, I feel that should be a big part of the customs ROMs. I am loving mine so much already running the android version of XBMC. So excited for the future!!

Works for a handful of games, GTA3 is the biggest. Does not work for most I've tried, including gameloft games and Carmageddon.
Unfortunately I did not keep notes when I began trying sideloading apps. I do know that some backups from Android Tuner worked when those from Titanium Backup did not. I also used ES file explorer for some backups as well.

Ok guys, maybe this question has been asked and maybe it has not. I'm typing this on the fly via mobile of course and don't have the time to scour through related forum threads which may or may not be able to help me out.
That said, I have several adapters that I use for packet injection. I have one which has an SMA port for antennas and I bought a 16dBi high gain antenna to use with another project and I am also using with this adapter.
Anyway, I woukd like to be able to use this adapter with its extended range while I'm wardriving.
I have microUSB to Female USB cables for my phone. But connecting a device does little other than power it on.
I need a script that disables the on board WiFi and installs a driver for the secondary adapter and then enables it. Or perhaps there is an app out there that makes this easier.
Anyone have any suggestions or solutions to this dilemma I'm facing?
Thanks in Advance!

C'mon guys, this is the TOP mobile device (particularly Android) forum in the world. I've been a member for years... I know someone on here has something I can try or a complete solution. I know that this has been successful on the Droid Milestone but that's a bit of an older phone.
Any help would be appreciated...

Ok, I have not tried this yet but if it works in anyway similar to how it would on a laptop then I should succeed. Using either "Linux Deploy" or Complete Linux Installer" I can install various Linux distros on my phone virtually. Even custom images can be used. But by stock you can install Ubuntu, Debian, (not sure why they offer both), Backtrack, Kali (again, unsure why they offer both) and several other Linux distros.
If I install Backtrack, which I know supports the adapter I want to use when running from live cd or live usb from a laptop (or even Kali Linux) then it should also work on my device. It's all about the drivers and disabling the devices built in WiFi adapter....
I have to take my phone back to stock due to some issues which have recently occurred. I will S-Off first probably, then return to Stock, re-root and after I recover my contacts, programs, etc, etc, I will attempt to install a virtual image of either BT5 or Kali and see what happens.
Again, I will keep updated this thread. If it works then everyone with an M7 from Sprint will be able to utilize this method.
:fingers-crossed:

Hmmm, interesting... I actually have a Nexus 7 - 32GB 1st gen, it's a nice, smooth tablet but doesn't hold a candle many other devices out there. If I had my choice of device to turn in to a "hacking" tab, uh, Phablet... I would choose the Galaxy Note 3.
Check out the arena....
http://www.phonearena.com/phones/compare/Google-Nexus-7-2013,Samsung-Galaxy-Note-3,Samsung-Galaxy-Mega-6.3/phones/8021,7984,7805
But, aside from that... You would think that you would only be limited to any devices hardware capabilities... Technically, we could probably take an old Toshiba or Acer Iconia tablet, install and/or run either BT5 or Kali virtually on top of whatever version of Android the device is running and have near the same capabilities that you would with a laptop.
If/when I figure out a way to use my Alpha AWUS036NH on any of the devices I own I'll be able to wardrive and pick up networks from nearly and 1/8th - 1/4 of a mile away. No exaggeration. Utilizing a 16dBi omni directional antenna instead of the measly 5 dBi that's included make an enormous difference.
But, rather or not it will work so easily running BT5 or Kali virtually over JellyBean or ICS compared to the ease of a live/virtual/physical installation of either OS on a laptop or PC will only be known once it has been tried. I wish I had more free time to do what I truly love to do with technology instead of the repetitive and thankless administration tasks I perform at work... The grass is always greener though... Lol!
One of these weekends I'll get something going, and I'll post it and hopeflly save peeps that $899. The only thing they will have to pay for will be the adapter(s) they choose to utilize and the tablet, phablet, or even phone that they want to use The rest will be open source and included with (hopefully) current and future releases of Kali Linux now that BT5 is suddenly and abruptly "dead". Did that catch anyone else by surprise or just me? Lol!

I just tried witcher battle arena and it installed and crashed at start. I think its just some ironing out they need to do. If it says It isnt compatable. Im not sure what it is. Just contact the developer and give them a log if you're rooted or just report it.
Kotor says its $5.80 Here. Does not say its not compatible. Not too sure.
Another thing you could try if you're rooted is switch to a lower resolution. Maybe it doesn't support the full resolution
the thing is, I'm currently running stock rooted. Just irks me that my Note 3 picks up everything, but my TF701 doesn't. You'd think almost everything could run blazing on a tegra 4. And I know how to sideload. I just feel irritated that I have to considering Tegrazone advertises these titles.

Ya I know what you mean. The real problem is developers have to support thousands of devices now, all with different versions and configurations.
I just tested witchers battle arena on the nexus 7 with lp just to see and that is a no go either. Doesn't matter to me anymore anyway. A game has to be pretty good for me to even look. For gaming if anything I just use steam Linux.
When the Google Play Store says an app is "not compatible" with your device, it doesn't necessarily mean your device is incapable of running it. I think it is more likely that our TF701T is not on a whitelist of devices tested and approved by the developer. The fact that the TF701T did not sell well, and hence is less likely to be used to test an app by developers, is going to be a problem for games. Also, some apps are region restricted; I remember I couldn't install any paid apps from Mainland China, even though I could install the same apps while in Hong Kong.
Nonetheless, I think sideloading a game is no big deal. I installed KOTOR on my TF701T and it works great (though I'd still prefer a controller or mouse and keyboard).
Don't know if this will help. But what I've done sometimes, is see if I can download the game for my phone. And even pay for it if needed. Then, using an APK extractor app, I get the apk as a file. Connecting to my computer, I can shift the apk to my tablet, maybe through Dropbox. Then, I install the game to my TF701T.
This doesn't always work, naturally. And it depends on whether your phone is on the whitelist for the game. But at least, this is a workaround.
Good Luck.

I own a 5th generation fire tablet. If specs are required I'll be happy to share them. I got this tablet on a crazy deal for $10.00 USD. I bought it for ****s and giggles and to tinker with it. I recently charged it up again trying to find a use for it but all the app in the Amazon store are total **** and I dont play any of them further more. Its littered with adds to buy stuff. I been using it literally as a paper weight for a book I have been reading. I am knowledgeable in rooting and moding by tinkering with my older phones. I want to know how if at all, is it possible to just get rid of Fire OS for some version of linux. Please help me if you know how thank you.
Linux? No, I don't believe there are versions of Linux you can install on the Fire.
If your device hasn't upgraded to a version of the OS newer than FireOS 5.3.1 (I believe it is), you can root it and then follow one of the guides here to install LineageOS or the NexusRom for a more stock Android experience.
If you can't root and flash a custom rom, you can still follow the guides here to install the Google Play store at the very least to get a much wider array of apps you can install. You can also follow the debloat guides to disable and replace a lot of the Amazon apps and launcher, to get a better android tablet experience.
But linux, no. Not that I am aware of.

Nope. Bootloader is locked with no ability to boot or install a custom recovery. Highly unlikely your device can be rooted or downgraded/debloated. You are pretty much 'stuck' with a captive portal to Amazon's ecosystem. However, you can install the Google Play Store and related services for access to additional apps w/o sideloading. Keep in mind the modest hardware specs; this device is designed for content consumption and light entertainment vs any kind of hard core gaming. Not to mention buying stuff from Amazon.

While I understand the frustration and disappointment it's important to recognize Amazon does not market the device as a generic Android tablet. It is effectively a content consumption portal locked into Amazon's restrictive ecosystem. If marketed for other purposes (and customizable as you wish) it would certainly carry a higher price point. I have often thought Amazon should change the form factor so Fire tablets are not confused with their more general purpose counterparts. It may look like a duck and (sometimes) quack like a duck but it is definitely a turkey if you were expecting a duck.

Unfortunately, there is NO (zero, zip, nada) option at present to root a 5th gen Fire running FireOS 5.3.2.1 or above. Nor can you roll back to a rootable build of FireOS. However, you can install the Google Play store:

Same prob here , saw a couple of threads...it seems the safer approach is to not to attempt downgrading and simply install Google Play (I already did it and works fine - you can practically install anything you want). The problem is actually you have to live with all the junk Amazon puts on the Tablet...;(
Ads on the lockscreen can also easily be blocked..
Blocking of OTA updates does require you to be root, so unless a means to stop OTA from happening shows up, our tablets will continue updating themselves ad-eternum
Cheers,
Gizmo

Downgrade from 5.6.x -> 5.4 is safe and permits disabling (not uninstalling) Amazon 'bloat' if you know what you're doing. OTA updates can be blocked via VPN based firewall but that adds to the cpu/memory load on this already resource constrained device. In the end it's probably best to do as @ThyGizmo suggests for practical vs safety reasons. Take the device for what it is - a slow but serviceable Amazon ecosystem appliance (shopping portal) that can also be used as a generic Android tablet with some limitations.
I just wanted to remove all the amazon apps. I don't use them.
I use web browser for shopping. I don't have amazon books, movies and many of their junk.
Don't get me start with the spy amazon alexa.

I get an eerie feeling Pandora listens to me sometimes. It has access to the microphone mostly because it intertwines with Google Assistant but I swear sometimes I'll yell at Pandora for not playing the music I like or a song I haven't heard in forever and within a few minutes the song is played. I've been able to do a few times with somebody else in the room and they thought it was quite creepy to. So I guess in a sense you could say that was "spying". But just because an app has a permission to use a certain piece of hardware doesn't mean it always will use it.unfortunately without Root you can't install app Ops which would tell you if a permission was ever used for that specific application.

FUD fodder. Slap a piece of tape over the mic and call it a day.
ok, after reading advice. I have decided not to root this Fire 7 5th gen.
After I install Google Play. What the best way to make this device to run better? amazon apps eat all the RAM and CPU.

You wouldn't be able to Root it. Only the 2017 HD 10 can be rooted at present.
