In case you didn't know, Google has silently implemented FREE tracking for almost all androids. It also allows you to erase the phone if you feel that it's necessary, all you have to do is enable it as a device admin. I realize there have been apps on the market for a long time now that do this (and more) however Google doesn't require you to install or update any apps to use this service and from my brief testing it seems to work amazingly well right off the bat.

it's about time they did this. i've hated having to install lookout or avast for decent location and remote wipe. now, that is more. further proof why you don't need an AV on your phone.
The only thing missing that I would like to see in future updates would be the ability to remotely lock the device so that a thief would have a harder time fooling around with the phone before you can track it. I've been using Where's My Droid for a long time but it lost the web interface tracking a while ago and that's been a bummer.
Is there any way to uninstall this useless feature? I never use GPS in my phone (because of the horrible reception, also because I am able to navigate without it), and also do not lose it.
Also, I already encrypted my device, so people can't do anything with it when they find it.
Also, whilst I am at it, I really do not like the way google forces their "content" down the wide opened throat of the community. I did not like the way they went with google services framework, and how you can't do jack sh*t without it, and I do not like the updates and "progression" they make.
Soo, any idea on how to get that off my phone?
Cheers!

you can disable the google play services in a custom ROM (i think it's built-in to android 4.2.2) but it'll break the YouTube app, and as you said, you're limited without it. as far as like older ROMs go (ICS, GB, etc.), the app isn't built-in and you can uninstall it.
I personally find google play services somewhat useful (especially now with the ADM), and i use YouTube occasionally so i need it for that, but we all have our own opinions, as you said, and I'd personally like to keep things civil.
and if you hate the services that much, you can actually reflash the ROM you're using without Gapps. it will be a limited experience, but the Play Services won't be there

Other than what was already said I don't think there's a way to remove it, but just look at it this way... it doesn't take up any space and won't just activate by itself, so it's really not inconveniencing you in any way. I understand you don't want to be force-fed features that you don't want, and I absolutely respect that, but for many (myself included) this was a long overdue feature that will no doubt help many many users. This kinda stuff comes with the territory of owning a 'connected' device like a smartphone, so if you really want to get off the grid, just go back to a dumb-phone (yes they still exist).
Sorry for the "rant", but these updates cost me money, since I don't have a flatrare on my phone. (And Android OS still uses my data, whilst I have it turned off. Which is strange)
I actually do own "a few" dumb phones, one for calling, one for getting called, one for SMS.
So I am off grid, at least a little bit.
I actually never understood that feature. As I stated above, I am not the kind of person that loses stuff (OK, maybe sometimes my manners ) nor did I ever had something stolen from me. People tried, but never succeeded.
I am looking forward to Replicant, so I can finally shove my middle finger up Googles fat back-ends (of the wafer. Also it is somehow connected to the fat file system. Not what you thought )
Some day.. Soon.

Replicant is available for the galaxysmtd (international galaxy s). it's not fully functional though, because there aren't a ton of open-source libraries and drivers available. if you want replicant on this phone, you gotta learn how to code, and how to build from source.
supernexus is kinda like replicant except it uses a lot of closed-source libraries that make things work. as i said, just don't flash the google apps package. it's basically a clone of the Nexus firmware, as you get all the AOSP components, nothing more or less. oh and also, very minimal google integration without Gapps
How does it work
So does Android Device Manager track the phone or tablet by the hardware signature or by Google account? I ask because I lost my Nexus 7 last Monday and immediately changed my Google Account password. Now when I try to track the Nexus 7 using Android Device Manager it shows that it has not been used since last Monday.

Hardware i reckon, when i used this it let's me choose which device I've used with my Google account. It sees phone as different again when I've flashed a new ROM.

CM Team Announces CyanogenMod Account For Remote Device Wipe/Tracking, Dual-Release Branches For Better Security

CM guys still finding ways to 1-up google android :silly:
.
I am not sure if this is an issue or if I am just being overly picky so I figured I would ask you guys and see what your experiences are.
My GPS arrow on maps doesnt point the direction the phone is moving(top of the phone). The arrow points to the right(side of the phone.) My old Nexus 4 didnt have this issue.
Moto voice is also really quite. The voice assistant does not speak with the same volume as the rest of the phone. Even with the volume turned up the voice assistant is quite.
what do you guys think, am I just being overly picky?
I've been hoping someone would respond with help or suggestions regarding this. Sitting in front of my computer, the screen orients correctly. But when I put my phone in my car, mine does the same as yours.

Just got the lollipop update and it seems to have fixed all the issues.
Im not sure if this is the place to ask this, but I need help.
Im trying to add a simple task to turn on my WiFi hotspot when my Bluetooth is connected.
I got the bluetooth connection part, but when I want to turn on WiFi tether it says this feature is unavailable on this device.
I am able to go into my quick bar and turn it on manually and it works fine.
I did some research and found out that people using the nexus are having this problem and they have created an app to fix it.
The only problem is the app is for 7.1 + and google wont let me install it because i only have 7.0
I have a rooted , HTC One m9 running 7.0, and today I went into the system folder and enabled WiFi tether.
Is there anyway I can make Tasker recognize that I have a WiFi tether?
what is the point in asking questions on this forum. Every time ive ever asked anything Ive never gotten an answer. There are many hundreds of android android enthusiasts out there and no one will even reply. I know there are interested parties for this subject because I've seen people on the forums talking about 7.1
Maybe if you looked at the thread right next to yours in the forum list, you would have seen this discussed before. A little effort on your part would have saved you getting all hot under the collar [emoji6]

Ive searched this site the only thing ive found is for 7.1 which doesnt work for 7.0 google wont let me install the app made to fix it. I need actual answers. or kind comments. nothing or telling me to search is not enough. I hate it when you go to a forum speciffically to fix your problem and search and cant find it only for people to tell you "you should have searched" I'll just let you know I did days worth of research before posting on here because i couldn't find it. I need to apploogize for what i said previously. You are trying to help.
Like i said though, that fix doesnt work for 7.0 it only works for 7.1 and above. I'm really trying to get the ball rolling for the android community about this bug for 7.0 I understand my device is old and now nobody cares about that version, but i cant update it my device has been rooted and it doesn't have a newer version.
I would just buy a new htc like the 10 but then its not compatible with my smart lock on my house. the only way to keep control of my home and my car is to either buy a plastic samsung phone that breaks when you drop it or buy an iphone which i dont want to do, or keep my htc on m9 its metal I can chuck it at brick walls, my home unlocks with it, and I can start my car with it.
Anyways is there any way to use the 7.1 app on 7.0? google wont let me install it.
It would really help if you took the chip off your shoulder. It your tone that probably puts people off from helping you. And I find it irritating that you vent about loads of unrelated things and provide at best only general, non-specific information about what's not working.
So, my first response in that linked thread was:
Create a task with a single action "net" -> "wifi tether". Test the task to ensure the hotspot comes on correctly. If not, download Nougat Tasker Tethering Toggle plugin.

Are you saying that the tasker action doesn't work? Or that for some reason the Nougat Tasker Tethering Toggle plugin isn't available for your nougat ROM? Or some other thing that we readers are supposed to just know what you mean?

Thread closed at OP request
Ever since earlier this year when the Google Assistant was stuck in the voice match loop, even after that was fixed, I still can't get my assistant to respond when my screen is locked/off.
To me this was not only a convenient feature, but it is also an amazing safety feature, and without it I can't keep my hands free while driving anymore. When I am driving I would rather not have to look away from the road, punch in my pin code, then say "ok Google" to tell my phone to navigate somewhere or ask it a question, but since this feature is "currently unavailable on this device" I'm left with no choice. I don't understand why it worked before, & now Google has decided not to make it available on the Nexus 6 anymore, because as I've said it's a major safety feature in my opinion. I think this needs to be reenabled for the Nexus 6, even if Google no longer supports the device with software updates, because a lack of software update support is not an excuse to take a feature that was already there and already working away.
So does anyone have any ideas?
Am I doing something wrong?
Is there an additional setting I need to change somewhere?
How can I get this to work again, so that I'm not forced to take my eyes off the road just to be able to then use my device hands free, which thereby makes it not hands free?
Any help is greatly appreciated.
I wish Google would make this available again!
Google isn't making anything available or not available for the N6 anymore. The device just is not supported any longer. There are also other issues to get assistant with a device that is off.
I suspect google sees this differently than you in that it's expected the device is actively navigating, or using android auto or the like. That is the simple answer, just have the device active when in the cat and you are driving.

My device never stays on all day and night even when I'm driving after a certain amount of time the screen goes off and it relocks. So this doesn't make sense and would cause a much larger drain on the battery by leaving your screen on all day rather than having the phone listen to you say ok Google and then pop the screen on.
Also since it did work, and was available, and no longer is, they most definitely took it away. They did so before they stopped supporting the device last October (I got my timeline screwed up before)
I'm very surprised that in the world we live in now, with everyone jumping at lawsuits, that someone hasn't sued Google for taking this feature away, thereby making them have to look away from the road to do anything with there phone, where as before they didn't have to, which then caused them to wreck. The reason I say this is because several years ago at person bought an RV, and set their cruise control, then got up to make themselves something to eat, and the RV ran off the road so they sued whoever because it ran off the road instead of driving itself when they were making themselves a meal. And they won!
So it's not a leap for someone to sue Google for causing them to crash.

Honestly it's not people have sued over crazier things and won!
Besides that if you contact Google support they say it should work with the screen off and locked... But they don't seem to know how to make it work. One person had me going into smart Lock to enable it. There is nothing in smart Lock that has anything to do with hands free ok Google hot word detection.
So why do they say it should work if it doesn't/isn't?
So no one has any ideas... Or work arounds, or apps or anything to make this work? Am I the only person who still has a Nexus 6? Or what?

No, you're not the only one. The N6 forum is still active. Your just asking for something that is not supported on the N6. Whether you think it is or not.

Weather I think it is or not?... Maybe you misunderstand... I didn't say it's supported but I can't get it to work.
I said it used to work... As in it used to be supported, and now it doesn't work, or isn't supported.
There is no reason for them to all of a sudden stop supporting, or remove this feature.

Slightly off topic given the location of this thread, but Unlock With Voice Match has been removed by Google from the Pixel 3 and 3 XL. Not only could it be spoofed by a recording, something they consider a security hole, it never consistently worked on devices. It didn't work consistently on the N6 and it doesn't work consistently on my Pixel 2 XL.
So Google has a reason to both remove and not support the feature, but that isn't what happened with the N6. With the N6, the app Motorola provided on Android 5.x - 7.x which allowed Unlock With Voice Match to work isn't compatible with Android 8 and later. If you want the feature you'll need to use an Android 7.x ROM.
If you're on an Android 7.x ROM, you may want to look into options such as wiping the Google app data or even a factory reset.

Ok I'm still useing the stock 7.1.1 that came out in October of 2017. I don't have or use Android 8.
I wasn't aware they had removed it from other devices as well because of security concerns.
I do think It's odd that they would remove it for security reasons, not tell anyone that or any reason why, and tech support still be saying it should be working.
Right?
Like I said, they didn't do that with the N6. They haven't yet removed it from my Pixel 2 XL either, but I believe Google will remove it at some point. It wouldn't take much either as Google only has to push an update to the Google app. At worst they could change it on their end.
My recommendation: back up your apps and data with a pre-bloatware copy of ES File Explorer or Titanium Backup, then factory reset. When setting up the device again, do not restore from the cloud and restore your apps - NOT including the Google app - from the backups you made.

If they didn't remove it because of security reasons from the Nexus 6 then why did it stop working?
Also I have done a complete factory reset and not restored from the cloud and not updated the app... It still wouldn't work.
I never ran a stock ROM on my N6, so your guess is as good as mine as to why. However, I do believe you are putting an inordinate value on a function that, unless mistaken, only exists in some form on roughly a half-dozen devices.

You think it only works on 6 devices? That was one of the main selling points for the Nexus 6 back in 2014. The ability to say hey Google and Google would respond and start listening for you to ask it to do something. Like call someone, send a text, navigate you somewhere, etc without you ever having to pick up your phone so it was completely hands free. So it existed on every Nexus 6 device which is way more than just 6.
Not an inordinate amount.... I just want to be able to tell my phone to do something for me without having to pick it up and look away from the road.
I think this discussion has turned from an inquiry session to a sabre rattling session.
Before it gets any further out of hand, and rules start getting violated, how about everyone just agree to disagree.
8 Million+ members on Xda, certainly we're not all going to see things the same way, nor will we understand things the same way.
Allowing this to devolve into flaming, insults, or personal attacks in pointless, solves nothing. and seeing the contributions of a few here, you guys are better than that.
If you're not getting the answers you're looking for, maybe it no longer plausible, or maybe the way you think it should be just isn't the way it is anymore.
If you've tried to offer options and insight and it isn't what others are looking for, move on. There's no sense in continuing to argue, there's a difference of opinions here, and neither side is seeing it the other way.
Thanks.

So again I'm sorry I ever even asked for help. I'll just have to do without until this phone breaks and I'm forced to buy a new one.
There's plenty of help here, and throughout Xda. In this particular case, the help offered wasn't what you were looking for. The answers given shouldn't be used to judge an entire membership, just like the questions asked shouldn't be. Again, difference of opinion is nothing more than that, different.
Even the Android Auto for phone screens was retired for Android 12, you can still use it on old Androids 11, 10. A month ago a message appear "Android Auto for phone screens will stop working soon", but still can use it.
Today I tried to start the app and instead appear the Android Auto settings page and no more Android Auto for phone screens. I have Miui 12.5.7 with Android 11 and Android Auto 7.6.621734-release.
Its only me or they kill out AAFPS for good?
For me the same...
Android Auto is now on the scrap heap; in short it will no longer work as a stand-alone.
Google have thrown a kill-switch (2 days ago now) for discrete mode so that now, it can only work in screen-mirroring mode which necessitates a compatible infotainment system/head unit (check the message it opens with).
The official alternative on offer is Driving Mode in the Google Assistant. It's of dubious quality, especially for devices older than Android 10, where it really is just a shortcut to Google Maps.
Alternative apps/launchers are available but they are either expensive or just plain rubbish (and often both).
I'm sorry to hear this is confirmed. So no more Android Auto, I don't have a compatible infotainment system/head unit.
Driving Mode in the Google Assistant is a just simple no-go. Here in Romania we use a lot Waze for police report, traffic jams and bad roads. Also since romanian language is not supported , you can spell some small commands in english, but to convince it to drive you at address or even to call your mom is very difficult.
So now I'm without alternative .

Indeed - and you are not alone as many reviews on Google Play confirm.
One other option is to roll-back to an older version. If you don't have a backup then APKMirror might be for you:-
Android Auto on APKMirror
FWIW we have an older, 7/Nougat device running ver 7.4.62094-release and it seems to work still.
If you do try this, then be sure and disable auto-update for it in Google Play...

I'll give it a try: my Renault Megane is half destroyed and now I have to use (for long time) a Seat Leon without AA enabled!
I've started AA on my old (but still running fine) Motorola Moto G5 and is not working anymore... Problem is that the phone is running Android 8.1 so Drive Assistant is not available (it needs at least Android 9!)

on my pc I had a few backups, I have removed the current build and installed Android Auto_7.2.620123-release and it worked flawlessly!
I'll look for a more recent build on APKmirror!
Addendum: tried with v7.6 but got the advice. For my Android v8.1 the last working is v7.2!
Thank you for this thread!
This has been nagging me more than usual as AA for Phone Screens was something I've used daily. (strong feedback sent to google, not that it will do any good)
Tried with app version 7.3.620544 on Android 11 and I can launch it a few times, all good and functional. But after a few hours an internal update seems to check the installed and Play store versions, preventing me from starting the application without updating. So reinstall APK again. (a hassle)
Tried creating a re-signed version with Android Studio to block auto-updates, but the re-signed APK install itself is blocked due to signature mismatch - even after uninstalling for user 0. I fear this might be only possible with rooting the phone...
I would very much appreciate any other non-root option to get this functioning again. Curse you google for ruining google.
I also tried to modify the apk.
I was not successful. Therefore I gave up...
Google are literally murderers , besides all the people they have stranded or driven of the road or over ravines with their crappy maps app
they have probably killed thousands in traffic accidents with their garbage software
,this new "driving mode" is no exception , I mean AA was an absolute out of control garbage fire just like GA is but this "driving mode" is over the top
even for the complete morons over at Google.
I can not tell you how many accidents I have almost got into since they removed trusted voice unlock and now that this POS driving mode has replaced AA it has gotten MUCH worse, they should be sued for this dangerous crap they have forced on us, I will NOT be buying another pixel EVER.
fist of all this POS continually turns the screen off and locks the device forcing me to unlock the phone continuously while driving,
they are so S all stupid they didn't even bother to make it rotate to landscape mode and my car mount is for landscape only. (only people who hold their guns sideways would want to use their phones in portrait mode as they always seem to do when taking word star videos)
the "driving mode" is pure trash ,there are no audio controls, you can't use it if you just want to listen to music and for phone calls because it's tied to maps and you have be using navigation to use it.
there is NOTHING here of any value I mean who TF wants to read the New York Slimes, ever and especially WHILE DRIVING, yeah great replacement to music apps and music controls.
There is no way in hell I would ever give these evil bastards my biometric data so here I am trying to unlock my phone with a pattern every 30 seconds while it is mounted landscape and the unlock pattern is in portrait mode, I have to tilt my head or try and figure out my lock pattern adjusted for it being tilted 90 degree off while I'm driving every 30 seconds because the screen keeps turning off and locking the device even though I have "smartlock" (DUMBlock) enabled and my cars bluetooth added as a "trusted device" as well as a smart band, but it just seems to ignore the fact both are connected.
how in the actual F do any of these imbecilic A holes still have jobs, every single last one of them should have been kicked the F out on their arses a long time ago. , maybe we need to get Elon over there.

please don't give up and keep trying other wise I am switching back to IOS, I just can't deal with this S
maybe I can throw away my pixel 3a XL and just go back to my old 6p on Nougat
this is not acceptable, what other options are there, I have an echo auto I never set up maybe that will be better.

F it, I am just going to throw away my pixel and go back to IOS
I am F ing done , removal of trusted voice unlock was bad enough but this is the last straw.
My idea is to install an alternative launcher as soon as you are connected to your car's Bluetooth system. I mean a launcher made for driving with big icons and so on.
With tasker you could additionally make a task to increase the display timeout to infinite when connected to your car's Bluetooth system.

Because they have done exactly what The Chocolate Factory wants.
Android Auto was quite good in the past but then they realised a serious problem: It hurts sales.
So the aim then became to make everybody sick of it by degrees, breaking it a piece at a time until expectations reduce to the point the user base ebbs away.
So what's in it for them? Google are betting that Android's 'popularity' will oblige most of us to seek an alternative - but only if works with their device; that means buying a new infotainment system - one that is either Android Auto or stand-alone Android.
Google and OEMs (JVC, Kenwood, Pioneer etc) now have another major market cornered and if they have done their math right, all of us switching over will mean a windfall of revenue in new hardware sales and licence fees.
As for looking for a launcher, well good luck with that. We've tried several but not one has the ability to switch between driving and phone mode.
These two probably represent the best of what's left but again, neither is properly polished even for the paid versions:-
DashDroid on Google Play
AutoMate on Google Play
Failing that, get a TomTom!

Thing is most cars don't have it still
the stand alone android units just suck because they don't have any connection method unless they use your phone as a hotspot , unless they have some with sim cards, but now sim cards are being phased out too, and I would not spend more money a month just to keep my head unit connected to GSM
I would buy a head unit if they made one that had wireless android auto baked in but there are none, at least not what I want, I want one for my BMW E46 that looks pretty close to stock, Android head units like that are a dime a dozen for this thing but none of them have AA or wireless AA
,what they should really make is a tablet that has wireless AA built in
or a fire tablet that acts as an echo show auto but with a screen
that you can mount to your dash ,sucks that all the hardware has been there to this for like a decade but because of theese big cancer monopolies we can't use the hardware to its full potential
I have yet to try reloaded yet but I have feeling it will not be good
but here is no reason this can't run on low end tablet like a fire tablet
maybe I will finally get around to trying out my echo auto that I picked up for $20 that has been sitting here not even unboxed for over a year now
thing is that my grom unit is a PITA to pair to my phone , you need to pull 3 different fuses to erase it and repair a new device and then once you do the feature that send the ID4 tags to the display on the radio might not work then you have to pair it all over agian , I am wondering if echo auto will send the track data to the grom and if it will display on the stock radio display like it does with the phone , then maybe I will just ditch GA altogether
its a horrible trash fire anyways , if Amazon made a fire phone again with hands free Alexa baked in I would buy it in hearbeat, anything to get rid of GA

Yeah ok ,see ya, I was thinking about buying a 7 pro but not now
F Google , I will NEVER buy another phone from them until they bring back trusted voice unlock and make their phones useable while driving
android is a nothing but a trash fire now, mainly because GA just sucks now
doesn't work while driving , doesn't work with hands free at all not even while using buds, unacceptable trash OS and very dangerous to use while driving people will die in accidents because of Googles moronic decisions and negligence, again F Google I'm out.

Many of us share your frustration and of course, you are at liberty to try alternatives if you think they are better.
Yet this is primarily a help thread and some would say your 'questions' had been answered before you even posted. So please bear in mind that 'going-off on one' does dilute the thread; making it harder for others to find the help they need as it becomes buried in the noise.
Good luck in your quest...

Yes everything Google does frustrates me, these people are absolutely obtuse
ok so do you have any suggestions for alternatives?
maybe there is a 3rd party app?
I have a Grom bluetooth unit and they have an app called dashlinq but I have not tried it yet
not sure how it will work with Google assistant
so are there any other 3rd party apps that do essentially the same thing as AA?
not sure if this dashlinq app uses GA or not or if it has it's own voice recognition.
I am surprised that there is not a way to keep using AA though as there is with Google play music ,which you can stil use if you have the right legacy version installed despite its replacement with YT music.
I am still confident there is a way, and also a bit confused
on weather it is going to work on my phone still since I have not updated past Android 11 , guess I will try installing some older .apk's and see if it is only not working anymore on Android 12.
