Home Screen Folder Automation - Tasker Tips & Tricks

Howdy, folks. Been thinking about buying Tasker, wondering if it can do what I need.
I have an HTC phone with 'Sense Home' which is a feature that creates 'smart folders' that will change the apps presented based on location, presumably triggered by IP address. However, I don't care for how it works - the folders are dynamic and apps will change, depending on how much you use any given one. That's not what I want - I prefer a static folder.
Is it possible to set up Tasker to activate different app folders on the home screen based on location? If so, can you point to a guide on how to do such a thing?
Thanks!

You may want to have a look at On Time. It has native Tasker integration.

Where do you see such an option in AutoTools?

It's a project where you set auto tools as your launcher.

That would interfere with HTC Sense, or any other preferred launcher (like Nova), would it not?

You're talking about the launcher shortcuts intruduced in Android 7 which pop up when you're long pressing the AutoTools icon, right?
I know about that possibility, but I think that's not what @BillTheCat is looking for. (Or am I wrong?)
@BillTheCat : Did you try out the app I linked in the second post?

Kinda nice, but there's no way to see the time on it. I'm pretty partial to seeing the time on my watch, LOL.
How does this work? Side load onto Gear?
This should be a home screen widget.. would be perfect for novalauncher or any other third party launchers for that matter..
Kind of pointless if you ask me..

i have exactly the same feeling. no offence, but i can't find a single use for this that i won't get with nova launcher.
i'm not a developer, but i think we need more apps that are optimized for gear - and i don't mean a launcher like this, but apps like voice recorder, music player, perhaps a text reader.

[Trick] Make AOD useful again

So you tried AOD (Always On Display) on your favorite Port ROM, you like it but you don't use it anymore because of battery issue.
A way to avoid this would be, like application bases AOD do, to enable this feature only if the phone is on charge. Unfortunatly, this settings is not available. I found a way (somewhere, by somebody else, all credit to him) using Tasker to do it:
Once you have Tasker and Secure Settings (paid apps, but in my opinion, really worth it if you like customizing your device), open Tasker and do the following :
1. On the Tasks tab, create a new task called for example ‘AOD On’
2. In that new task, add an action (Category = Plugin, then Secure Settings)
3. Edit the configuration in the new screen and select Actions => Device Setting
4. In that screen, the Setting Table should stay at ‘system’, and the Setting Name should be ‘aod_mode’. The Setting Value should be set to ’1′.
5. Save the task and create another task with the same steps but call it ‘AOD Off’ and set the Setting Value to ’0′.
6. Once both tasks have been created, go to the Profiles Tab and create a new profile and select ‘State’.
7. Select state category => Power => Power
8. Leave Source as Any, and Invert unchecked.
9. Save the profile, choose the correct task (‘AOD On’), call it ‘Charging’ for example
10. Create a second profile called ‘Not Charging’ exactly the same way but with the ‘Invert’ of step 8 checked, and select the task ‘AOD Off’.
UPDATE : Solution No2 (+ disable AOD when battery is low)
1. Download this app (paid),
2. Don't forget to select the features you want to enable,
3. Thanks @erghetto in post #2 !
4. Voila !
Both solutions works fine on my S8 port. AOD becomes useful again !!!
Or simply use this:

Well honestly I tried all app based AOD and it's like lock screen app : more features, nice looking but not so well implemented that stock (security, look and feel, Speed...).
But if you are ok with it...

Maybe you didn't even open that link.
It is an app that simply activates aod only when phone is in charge (plus another feature)
So no need to download tasker or any other app.
It is paid, but also one app you suggests need be payed, so this one is simpler and doesn't require any configuration with tasker or similar

Ok, ok, I see, you're right, it's a good alternative. Now it depends if you already use Tasker or not, but for people who don't and don't want to bother with all Tasker settings, that's a nice app I didn't know !

how to create url shortcut on homescreen

Hello guys
Before my new XZ1compact running Oreo, i was able to create URL shortcuts using app like "website shortcut" and choose a nice picture as icon.
IT seems it no more possible to use such app with Oreo ( noted on website shortcut app website) :
"NOTE: due to a change within Android functionality, Android Oreo (8) does not seem to support the shortcut creation service that this app relies on. A solution is in the works, but will require some time."
Can you please tell me a way to do it or do i have to wait for devellopers to update their application ?
Thanks in advance.
In Chrome navigate to the url you want to add a shortcut to, then in the menu choose "add to homescreen".
That should do what you're asking.
Hello Ohbkid
You're right, this method works to just add a shortcut but you cannot choose shorcut icon; it also works with Edge for android.
this is Something i want to do and i could do using "website shorcut" app in the past.

Sorry, does not seem to work on Oreo and Samsung S7. The possibility to make a shortcut on the homescreen is still there in the Chrome browser, but nothing appears on the homescreen. Is this again some security issue in Oreo 8.
url shortcut create on oreo
so, is there a working way to create a url shortcut on homescreen with oreo or not?
thanks
Tom
Absolutely not and impossible. Discovered that it might also have to do something with the launcher you're using. Really, aside from other issues this Oreo is giving me I deeply regret ever having updated to Oreo. What about this adaptive icons problems ??

How To Guide [No Root] Gesture navigation on third party launchers

Hello, everyone.
Lately I have been looking for a way to disable navigation bar on Stock rom, and use gestures on third party launchers, for example on Nova launcher. After trying different things, here what worked for me:
First, download Fluid N. G. app and set it (make sure the app stays working and the battery saver doesn't kill it). Don't hide the navbar using Fluid N. G., not only this won't work, but also will cause the navbar to reappear after every unlock. So, don't use the hide option from Fluid N. G. (see the screenshot below).
You also need Tasker app, So install it.
Since the device is not rooted, you need to grant some permissions for the Tasker app, in order to work. To do this, follow the instructions Here.
Once done, open Tasker app, select profiles and click "Import profile". The file that you need to import is in attachements. Enable it, reboot your device (wait for few seconds) and Voilà !.
I tried to keep it as simple as possible. The results are attached below. Good luck!

Although this one will work also on rooted devices, I believe there are better alternatives (for example editing build.prop..etc).

@Mechalikh, I tried what you said above but when is about to import the profile in Tasker it give an error, "profile not found"
By the way, the profile extension must be .prj.xml not .prf.xml.
I would also like to know more about hiding navigation buttons with build prop. I am on Miui EU rom on sweetin
I wish there was another way to keep fng running in background, instead of in recents always

I don't get it, I'm on Tasker version 5.15.12 ( the latest one). The extentions are : prf.xml for profiles and tsk.xml for tasks. Anyway HERE is how to do it manually.

Thanks for your help. I do have root access but no idea how to do it through build props, so I will stick with this Tasker method. Cheers!
One thing though, FNG bottom gesture isn't as responsive as Miui gesture. Takes like a second to open recents. Found a good FNG file and imported its settings. Better now.

Not tested this myself yet, but i doubt this was removed on Android 12 or Miui 13, this is kind of a basic function.
That build.prop is telling the OS the device has hardware keys for navigation. I've been using this for perhaps 10 years now .
Thank you @Mechalikh for sharing this, I watched the video and I succeded it with Smart launcher... I'm using Smart launcher for years...
In my case it wasn't necesary the second task because the phone is rooted.
Edit: only one question please... Is anymore fluid navigation app needded after this?

This will only hide the navigation bar, gestures will not work, so before doing that, you need to install a gesture navigation app like Fluid n g.
From my understanding, in android 11 google disabled navigation gestures when not using the system launcher. Probably because third party launchers failed to integrate those animations correctly, which made them look laggy ( same when using fluid n. g. unfortunately)
You can see that in android 10 phones. When you change the launcher, the gestures will remain but there will be no animations.
So this is probably their way to avoid it.
if you look in the system Ui code you will find something like:
if( the launcher is system launcher)
enable gestures
else disable them.
if this is the case. A patched system ui app should do the job. i'll root my device this monday, and try to decompile the systemUI app to see if that's the source of our problem.

Android Q introduces a new gesture navigation control, but Google stops you from using third-party launcher apps with it.

well they said it has been the case since android 10. But i had a "honor" phone with gestures working fine on android 10 (but of course with no animations when using another launcher) .

Question Origin OS launcher and icons ?

Hey guys,
So I just got myself a Vivo X Fold and I'm loving it. The OS feels so good but I was wondering if there was a way to change the icons ? Or even the launcher ? I can install other launchers but somehow can't find a way to set it to default. When I go back home it's still the stock launcher. I wouldn't mind it if I could change the icons but yeah.
Any help would be appreciated !
Thanks and have a nice day.
no and no.. no need to thank me, follow me for more tips.
This option only appears if you have created and signed into your Vivo account:
Go to Settings / Privacy / More Security Settings and toggle "allow alternative launcher". Make sure you go into the privileges for the new launcher and set it to autostart and go into battery and set it for high battery usage.
Hi, i just tried to do that with the launcher, what frcraig said, and it still goes back to the factory launcher. I created vivo account, logged in, allowed alternative launcher, set nova as default launcher and applied the battery savings settings, autostart, etc. Any other ideas?
actually i just went back in and unselected tap the home button to lock the system home screen and now it works!

What alternative launchers out there support two separate screen layouts?
Or... like the stock Vivo launcher, show only one-half of the unfolded screen on the external one.

Total Launcher is a good choice. Supports two separate home screens and you can customize everything...
