How can I truly fully wipe my N6 XT1103 32GB so that it would be virtually impossible to restore any sort of data.
I want to make sure that any emails/accounts etc. are completely wiped and can never be restored.
Running stock 7.0.0 (NBD92G, Apr 2017) never rooted/unlocked etc.
Thanks
Fastboot oem unlock .. then fastboot flash twrp, then format data (where it asks you to type yes) then reboot. Profit
Any way of doing this without having to unlock, flash recoveries etc.?
The phone is encrypted if that matters.
Thanks

Sure, I just like to be thorough. Just go into settings and do a factory reset. Settings > backup&reset > factory reset. Then connect the phone to computer and check if any files remaining

I heard that factory reset doesn't truly delete the files.
Some people after factory reset fill the phone with random data to remove the old invisible but not deleted data underneath.
Any comment on that?
Thanks
Wipe everything in TWRP (Factory Reset, Advanced Wipe everything, Format Data), and reboot back to recovery
Do the above again without rebooting (wipe everything again but don't reboot)
Mount firmware (Mount -> firmware)
Perform fstrim on /data, /cache, /system, and /firmware (can use adb shell or the terminal from TWRP; the command is fstrim -v /data (run it and then run it 3 more times changing data to cache, system, and firmware)
Reboot either to bootloader (if flashing stock), or recovery (if flashing a custom ROM)
Wiping everything twice with TWRP is mostly just an old habit from when that process was a little flaky on an unrelated device in the past (sometimes it wouldn't actually wipe partitions the first try). The fstrim erases data on the block device that's marked for deletion. Basically, the partition wipe throws a blanket over the data, and fstrim obliterates it for good

In case someone else is going to use the wiped N6; don't forget to dismount this device from your account. To avoid Google's security blocking.
a little off topic, can i flash ota image from google going from 7.0.0 (NBD92G, Apr 2017) to 7.1.1 (N6F27H, Jul 2017)?
I tried going from 7.0.0 (NBD92G, Apr 2017) to 7.1.1 (N6F27E, Jun 2017) and it gave me an verification error at about 40% while copying.
Should i go apr may jun jul in sequence or thats not the problem?
Thanks
Or you can use Wug's Toolkit to completely wipe your device and storage, then d/l the newest image and use Wug's to flash it, unlock it, root it, unencrypt it, etc
Wug's NRT

Okay so I am going to come straight out with it and say that I am in no way tech-savvy. I can usually work my way through most problems, but I really don't want to brick my phone, so I came here to try to get a definitive answer. Here's the deal:
-> I have an LG Revolution, rooted, with GingerVolt flashed.
-> The past few days, I have woken up to find that my phone was in clockwork recovery
-> I chose to restart it and it just goes back to normal
-> After looking around, I found out that VZW send out some sort of update.
-> Being the paranoid person that I am, I decided that I just want to unroot my phone and get it back to it's out-of-box settings (plus whatever the update is)
-> I have found some unrooting programs, but whenever I look at the compatible devices, the Revo is nowhere to be found
-> How should I go about going back to the phone's original settings?
Basically, I am clueless about what to do, and don't want to shoot blindly into the dark for fear of bricking my device.
Thanks in advance for your help!
1. Flash Rooted Stock ZV7 (dl available in the dev section)
2. Use One Click Revo all in one to unroot (dl available in the dev section)
3. Allow update to ZV8
4.???

In the instructions it says to wipe data, what does the mean? When I boot into recovery, I have the option to 'wipe user data and restore to factory' or something like that. Is that the same thing?

When you get that message you just confirm it doesn't actually do anything it just bypasses the screen and goes to CWM. You want to choose the option Wipe Data in CWM
When I reboot into ClockworkMod Recovery, I have the following options:
-reboot system now
-apply update from sdcard
-wipe data/factory reset
-wipe cache partition
-install zip from sdcard
-backup and restore
-mounts and storage
-advanced
-power off
-+++++Go Back+++++
Which do I choose?

try this instead of the CWM module
Okay so I followed the steps listed and was able to flash the stock ROM. Then I used an app to unroot . When I try to ota update, it takes me to clockworkmod recovery. Then I click reboot and it says update failed. Suggestions???
You needed to install stock recovery, CWM is still your recovery partition. I believe you need to use option 5, or you can follow the guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1337386 and just install .tot v8, i believe. It is what I did.
Okay so I am almost 100% back to stock, but I am stuck on one problem. I still have the Superuser app. I am back to stock ROM and recovery, I OTA updated just fine, but superuser is still sticking around. How do I get rid of it??? Please help!
Settings>Applications>Manage Applications>Super User> Uninstall, assuming that is what you need. When I flashed over the tot I did not have to uninstall anything, it completely wiped my data on the phone partion. But I also did do a factory reset after I got out of Clockworkmod.
I have installed twrp 3.0.0-1 recovery and cm-13.0-20160315-NIGHTLY-titan. I made a fresh install. When i try to encrypt the phone, in settings > security > encrypt phone, the phone reboots on android logo. After a few secondos it reboots and don't encrypt.
Hi,
I had the same trouble some times ago, I made an answer here and search for information but I have found nothing.
I found fortuitously that when I formatted the data before the install (and not only erase the partitions) the ROM encrypted without problem. I tried it (problem and solution) with Minimal OS, CM13, and others MM ROMs.
I'm not developer and maybe it's not the information you need but maybe it can help you.
Sorry for the English.
Hi, same issue here.
Moto G 2nd Gen 2014 (XT1068)
Android stock 6.0 (OTA)
TWRP 3.0.0-2
SuperSU 2.62-3 Beta
ROM and SD card as internal memory (approximately 3 GB of data)
First, I have tried to encrypt after rooting. But the device restarted and stayed stuck to the big M Motorola logo. I never see the encryption progress (in percentage).
Then I need to hold POWER for 10 seconds in order to reboot the device.
Second, I have tried a trick from this post : http: //androidforums.com/threads/how-to-encrypt-a-rooted-device.866968/#post-6746987
Connect the device to a PC.
Enable USB Debugging.
Open an elevated command prompt in adb folder, and type : adb shell
Type : su
Accept the root permission request on the device.
$ will turn into #
Type : pkill -KILL daemonsu
Encrypt the device.
But that didn't work...
EDIT : Factory reset > Encrypt > Root
Chainfire said:
It's a known issue. You need to be unrooted for the encryption procedure to work. You can root again after encrypting.

Finally, I am able to encrypt/decrypt MOTO G 3rd Gen XT1550. It took lot of trials and finally works. Below are the steps one has to follow to encrypt and decrypt
Encrypt - rooted Host
---------------------------
Factory reset the rooted mobile
Encrypt mobile
Install super su to get root permission
Your phone is rooted and encrypted
To decrypt, again factory reset the mobile. It will be decrypted and install super su to get root access.
Encrypt -Unrooted Host
-----------------------------
On unrooted phone “encrypt phone” was successful
Decrypt was not working on the same phone afterword's
Reset the phone to factory mode, it will be back to decrypted state.
Setting -> backup and factory reset
Thank You!

Yes, I quoted your message.
It seems to be the only way to achieve root+encryption.

Don't work for me...
I wiped, formated and nothing.....
Hi,
What I do is format data, reboot to recovery, erase everything but external SD, instal ROM & Gapps, reboot system, put a pin code and when battery is more than 80%, encrypt.
Every time I made it in this order.
You can use the multiROM TWRP, I used it because I read here that it can read encrypted partition. The link is in the multirom thread.
I'm with a titan device, I don't know if it matter...
Good luck!
New Verizon S6 Edge (sitting in the box for 1-2 years) and I used the OEM adaptive fast charger to bring it from zero to 100% and then waited 10-15 minutes.
I used the built-in OTA updater, not Samsung/Verizon's Software Upgrade Assistant, and went through 11 system updates over the course of 2-3 hours. Out of curiosity, would using the SUA have reduced the number of updates to apply? Edit: I am almost certain now SUA updates straight to the current build (based on their wording, link at bottom). Apparently if I wanted to go straight to current system build, I should have used SUA or a tool such as Odin to flash the stock firmware directly.
Here is a list of the software builds I went through:
G925VVRU3BOG5 - This was the build on my phone out of the box.
G925VVRU4BOG7
G925VVRU4BOG9
G925VVRU4BOK7
G925VVRU4CPC2 - This is the first official build of Marshmallow for this phone. After update success, I decided to wait a few minutes and then restart the phone.
G925VVRU4CPD2 - I received error 404 after automatic download failed. Manual download attempt OTA was successful.
G925VVRU4CPF4 - I received error 401 after answering no to the automatic download request because I was trying to prevent the error above. Manual download attempt OTA was successful.
G925VVRU4CPH1
G925VVRS4CPI2
G925VVRU4CPK2
G925VVRS4CPL3 - My battery charge ticked down from 41% to 40% just before I applied this update, 35% upon completion/success message.
G925VVRS4CQA3 - This is the last Marshmallow build available for this phone.
On Verizon's webpage it says to have at least 40% charge or 20% when hooked up to the charger. I am worried because I did not connect my phone back up to the charger for these last two updates. The last one really bothers me because it was 34% when applied and 29% upon completion/success message. Is there a way to verify everything was written correctly? Should I even be worried?
With exception of a few failed downloads, all updates -when applied- said successful first try.
I have the understanding that it is important to wipe (system) cache partition and wipe data/factory reset from the recovery menu after major system updates to avoid all sorts of potential problems. So, here are my questions:
Does wipe data/factory reset from the recovery menu also wipe (system) cache partition? If not, should I wipe cache partition before or after? I have found conflicting information on this. Edit: It is so confusing because when you search around there are tutorials only mentioning the reset, others saying to wipe cache before reset and vice versa! There are also people going as far as doing both of these before -and- after a system update! Edit 2: It appears that wipe data/factory reset formats /data, /cache and /sbfs partitions. So, wipe cache partition is redundant when performing a factory reset from the recovery menu.
Both of these videos demonstrate wipe cache partition followed by wipe data/factory reset. You will see /cache is unnecessarily formatted twice (picard facepalm).
https://youtu.be/-Y-aHwdjAZA?t=175
https://youtu.be/NUsV75KFLzA?t=65
Note: there is no Google account to remove (Factory Reset Protection/FRP, Google Account Lock etc) as this is a new phone.
I am under the impression that I should clear all app cache, app data and maybe reset network settings before I attempt the recovery menu methods above. This is overkill/redundant, right? Edit: All this stuff appears to be stored in somewhere in /data (even an app's cache, within a subfolder of each app).
Aside from backup (in my case does not apply), is there anything I should do before (or after) recovery menu wipe(s)? I want to ensure clean slate. Edit: It seems wiping /data and /cache is all you can do in terms of user-accessible data.
I notice there is a "Factory data reset" option from within the OS under Settings: Backup and Reset. Does this behave any differently from the recovery menu method? Edit: I found via thedroidguy.com that it does not reformat the /data partition as the recovery menu reset does but only clears it. It also has Backup and Restore options. Are there any other differences? Does it clear other partitions than /data?
Also, I notice in Settings: About Phone: Status there is "Factory data reset". For me, it says "Unknown". I assume this value is a counter, log or timestamp of the last known factory data reset(s). Maybe it is only triggered when the reset is performed within the OS, but I have no idea. Anyone know what this really is? Will a recovery menu factory reset trigger it?
Under Settings: Storage there is Cached Data. If I clear this, does it include all application cache -and- all application data or just the app cache? Edit: I am pretty sure now it just clears all applications' cache, so it shouldn't affect anything unless maybe an app is poorly coded and stores things in cache that should be elsewhere. On a related note, when clearing app data from apps individually its app cache will also be cleared. I am not sure if clearing Cached Data from this Storage menu touches the system cache partition.
Any documentation or links would be very much appreciated; I am running out of steam here sifting through search results with different keywords and modifiers.
If anything I said is wrong or not entirely correct please say so!

I am in trouble of loosing all my userdata after following the below process:
1. I was on stable 4.5.1 and not encrypted.
2. flashed blue_spark 8.52 recovery.
3. Reboot to recovery and full wiped (except user data).
4. Flashed OOS beta 18 and Magisk 14.3.
5. Rebooted and waited for 20 min but was still on rebooting process.
6. Force rebooted to recovery and alas!, twrp asking for decrypt password!!!
7. Reboot to system and message appears as 'Encryption Unseccessful'
I am not been able to access any partition including userdata from TWRP (as it's asking password), OOS also not booted as well.
Now I will be grateful if someone have any knowledge to skip TWRP password and provide access to userdata to recovery/copy data (photos/files etc) from the device before format userdata and start over again.
If your data was previously decrypted then disable encryption, format data, install a ROM that does not enforce encryption, then try looking on the Play Store for photo recovery apps.
Note that it will not be possible to recover data from the encrypted part of the device. If you left it running for 20 minutes, the chances are your data is almost entirely gone at this point.
Like stated above, your data is probably destroyed since you interrupted the encryption process.
Have you tried "default_password" as the password in TWRP?
After trying to update to a newer version of a custom rom, crDroid 6.4, I can no longer boot into the system. The phone only boots into recovery. TWRP no longer asks for a password in order to decrypt the phone, as it has done before. I have tried wiping Data, Cache, and Dalvik, and flashed the rom again, with no luck. Is it a way for me to force decrytion or something?
Any help is much appreciated! I am new to this, and still learning.

I assume that the data partition is actually still encrypted and you see random folder names in TWRP. If so, try formatting data in TWRP (not wipe, but format) then reboot to the ROM.

Will this delete all my files?
Also, I'm not sure if I am flashing the ROM correctly. I have the ROM, magisk and other files on my computer. I use "ADB Sideload" under advanced in TWRP and "adb sideload romname.zip" on my computer.

Yes it will delete all your files. If you boot to TWRP and it doesn't ask for the PIN, etc., but you see all your folders have random encrypted names, then everything is lost anyway. There is nothing you can do to recover that data.
In future just copy the ROMs onto the phone and flash them directly off the phone in TWRP, using the install menu.

Thanks for your help. Luckily I had backed up all my photos. I am up and running with a new rom. I am testing omni rom as it now comes with microg prebuild.
